Projected doses range up to 30 mrem/event to the maximum offsite individual for high winds and up to 85 mrem/event for very severe earthquakes. Even under conservative assumptions on meteorological conditions, the maximum offsite dose would be about 20 per cent of the DOE limit for accidents involving enriched uranium storage facilities. The total dose risk is low and is dominated by the risk from earthquakes. This report discusses this test.

OBJECTIVE: An excess of cancer was suspected by workers of the metallurgy department at the French Atomic Energy Commissariat (CEA) after several deaths from cancer were reported in 1983 and 1984. After a descriptive study performed by the CEA in 1985 the results of which were not conclusive enough to put an end to the controversy, the present cohort study was undertaken in 1989. METHODS: As no specific exposure, or a precise cancer site was suspected, it was decided to include all subjects who had worked at the metallurgy department for at least 1 year between 1950 and 1968. The cohort was followed up to 31 December 1990. Individual occupational exposures were determined retrospectively for each year from 1950 to 1990, both qualitatively (annual job, and hazard records, and assistance from former workers) and quantitatively (for external radiation). On the basis of these exposures, three types of occupational tasks were identified: handling of chemicals, radionuclides, and external radiation. ...

This means that, for instance, a steel with 0.1 percent carbon, at equilibrium, contains about 0.025 percent, or 250 parts per million, dissolved oxygen. The level of dissolved oxygen in liquid steel must be lowered because oxygen reacts with carbon during solidification and forms carbon monoxide and blowholes in the cast. Increasing mechanical properties requirements for structural parts direct modern powder metallurgy towards improved performance by adding such expensive alloying elements as Ni and Mo. The strong tendency to price increase during last decade lead to decreased competitiveness of Ni-Mo-alloyed PM parts compared to products of conventional metallurgy. Therefore, cheaper alloying elements as Cr and Mn, commonly used in cast and wrought steels, are of great interest. However, the use of these alloying elements faces some difficulties in compaction and sintering, especially in the case of high-oxygen affinity manganese. The present study deals with reasons of brittleness of PM steels admixed with manganese as medium-carbon ferromanganese powder. The effect of mechanical alloying on the property of Mo-Cu alloy for electronic packaging was studied. It is found that the molybdenum and copper powder particles get totally out of shape and become flaky after mechanical alloying, the tiny particles are obviously increased in number and stuck on the big particles. Tiny particle size is in the range of nanometer. The diffraction peaks of the molybdenum and copper after the mechanical alloying become wider and the intensity of diffraction peaks drop. After the mechanical alloying, the density, hardness, electric and thermal conductance of the Mo-30Cu alloy sintered at different temperature are comparatively higher than that of mixed one. The density, hardness, electric and thermal conductance of the Mo-30Cu alloy increase with the temperature increased until 1 250℃.

The effect on airway responsiveness of an oral dose of a beta-adrenergic blocker (80 mg propranolol) given before work, was studied in 15 potroom workers who complained of dyspnoea, chest tightness and wheezing after they had started to work in potrooms. The same study was performed in a group of 10 potroom workers, selected at random, who had not complained of such symptoms. In addition, another group of 12 potroom workers with respiratory symptoms were given 1 mg atropine subcutaneously. Ventilatory function was assessed from forced expiratory curves (by means of a waterless spirometer) and from maximum expiratory flow-volume curves (by means of a digital pneumotachograph). Bronchoconstriction during the first few hours work was significantly potentiated by propranolol in the group of potroom workers with respiratory complaints.
