Prior to 1970, there was very little known about canine and feline liver disease, and what was known consisted of descriptions of histopathology such as hepatitis or cirrhosis. It was in the mid-1970s that a Bedlington terrier breeder in the US observed that many of her dogs were dying from liver disease. It must be given daily. It is an anabolic, androgenic steroid which blocks the release of LH (luteinizing hormone) which prevents heat from occurring because follicles on the ovary dont develop and mature without it. Heat will occur between 7 and 200 days after the drug is discontinued, usually 70 days later. It is a controlled drug and it can cause male characteristics in female dogs as well as liver damage and urinary incontinence. It should never be given to dogs before their first heat cycle or to Bedlington Terriers because of their genetic predisposition towards liver disease.
