Geography of Mesopotamia - Wikipedia
In contrast with the arid plateau of Mesopotamia stretched the rich alluvial plain of Chaldea, formed by the deposits of the two great rivers that encircled it. The soil was extremely fertile, and teemed with an industrious population. Eastward rose the mountains of Elam, southward were the sea-marshes and the Kaldy or Chaldeans and other Arameans, while on the west the civilization of Babylonia encroached beyond the banks of the Euphrates, upon the territory of the nomadic ancient Semitic-speaking peoples (or Suti). Here stood Ur (Mugheir, more correctly Muqayyar) the earliest capital of the country; and Babylon, with its suburb, Borsippa (Birs Nimrud), as well as the two Sippars (the Sepharvaim of Scripture, now Abu Habba), occupied both the Arabian and Chaldaean sides of the river. The Arakhtu, or river of Babylon, flowed past the southern side of the city, and to the southwest of it on the Arabian bank lay the great inland freshwater sea of Najaf, surrounded by red sandstone cliffs of ...
The Balaĝ Instrument and its Role in the Cult of Ancient Mesopotamia | Jewish Music Research Centre
Concerning musical instruments, we are fortunate to have many terms, many visual representations and a handful of material remains from ancient Mesopotamia. However, a precise identification or matching between text and image (or material source) has remained elusive. The one clear exception is the lilissu, which can safely be identified as a kettledrum in the Seleucid period, due to the presence of text and image on the same physical object (Rashid 1984: 140). A further methodological problem lies in the fact that names of instruments change over time. However, although the identity of an instrument might change, it usually retains familial characteristics with its predecessor of the same name. For example, Anglo-Saxon hearpe, from which the word harp is derived, originally denoted a Teutonic lyre (De Vale 2008: V: 1). In the following, it is argued that, at least originally, Sumerian á-lá or Akkadian alû referred to a giant, double-membraned, cylindrical, struck drum (as opposed to a ...

Lucius Verus - Wikipedia
In 165, Roman forces, perhaps led by Martius Verus and the V Macedonica, moved on Mesopotamia. Edessa was re-occupied, Mannus re-installed.[136] His coinage resumed, too: Manu the king (Syriac: MNW MLK) or Antonine dynasts on the obverse, and King Mannos, friend of Romans (Greek: Basileus Mannos Philorōmaios) on the reverse.[130] The Parthians retreated to Nisibis, but this too was besieged and captured. The Parthian army dispersed in the Tigris; their general Chosrhoes swam down the river and made his hideout in a cave.[137] A second force, under Avidius Cassius and the III Gallica, moved down the Euphrates, and fought a major battle at Dura.[138] By the end of the year, Cassius army had reached the twin metropolises of Mesopotamia: Seleucia on the right bank of the Tigris and Ctesiphon on the left. Ctesiphon was taken and its royal palace set to flame. The citizens of Seleucia, still largely Greek (the city had been commissioned and settled as a capital of the Seleucid empire, one of ...
Mesopotamian Arabic - Wikipedia
Aramaic was the lingua franca in Mesopotamia from the early 1st millennium BCE until the late 1st millennium CE, and as may be expected, Iraqi Arabic shows signs of an Aramaic substrate.[5] The Gelet and the Judeo-Iraqi varieties have retained features of Babylonian Aramaic.[5]. Due to Iraqs inherent multiculturalism as well as history, Iraqi Arabic in turn bears extensive borrowings in its lexicon from Aramaic, Akkadian, Persian, Turkish, the Kurdish languages and Hindustani. The inclusion of Mongolian and other Turkic elements in the Iraqi Arabic dialect should also be mentioned, because of the political role a succession of Turco-Mongol dynasties played after Mesopotamia was invaded by Mongol-Turkic colonizers in 1258 that made Iraq became part of Ilkhanate (Iraq is the only Arab country that was influenced by Mongols), and also because of the prestige Iraqi Arabic dialect and literature enjoyed in the part of Arab world, which was often ruled by sultans and emirs with a Turkic background. ...

We live in an era of convenience, and trying to make someone fall in love with you using only your personality is time-consuming. It might be time to try a different kind of charm: ancient Greek magic! The Core spoke with Chris Faraone, Frank Curtis Springer and Gertrude Melcher Springer in Classics, about the kinds of love spells described in his book Ancient Greek Love Magic. Faraone explained that men and women typically used different kinds of spells, an eros spell for men and a philia spell for women. The eros spell was used as more of a curse, designed to cause the woman an unbearable amount of torture which could only be relieved by the man who cast the spell. The philia spell was designed to bind the man closer to the woman, and was related more to healing magic than to torture (which presumably comes in the later stages of the relationship).. ...

Hullinger DNA: Our Chromosome in Sumeria
In spite of the importance of this region, genetic studies on the Sumerians are limited and generally restricted to analysis of classical markers due to Iraqs modern political instability. It has been found that Y-DNA Haplogroup J2 originated in Northern Mesopotamia.[18][19] The Sumerians were a non-Semitic people, and spoke a language isolate; a number of linguists believed they could detect a substrate language beneath Sumerian. However, the archaeological record shows clear uninterrupted cultural continuity from the time of the Early Ubaid period (5300 - 4700 BC C-14) settlements in southern Mesopotamia. The Sumerian people who settled here farmed the lands in this region that were made fertile by silt deposited by the Tigrisand the Euphrates rivers. ...

Early acts of literacy - TriPotential
Bill of sale of a male slave and a building in Shuruppak, Sumerian tablet, circa 2600 BC. The earliest forms of written communication originated in Sumer, located in southern Mesopotamia about 3500-3000 BCE. During this era, literacy was a largely functional matter, propelled by the need to manage the new quantities of information and the new type of governance created by trade and large scale production. Writing systems in Mesopotamia first emerged from a recording system in which people used impressed token markings to manage trade and agricultural production. The token system served as a precursor to early cuneiform writing once people began recording information on clay tablets. Proto-cuneiform texts exhibit not only numerical signs, but also ideograms depicting objects being counted.. Egyptian hieroglyphs emerged from 3300-3100 BCE and depicted royal iconography that emphasized power amongst other elites. The Egyptian hieroglyphic writing system was the first notation system to have ...

Abstract: The two rising powers in the Middle East-Turkey and Iran-are neighbors to Iraq, its leading trading partners, and rapidly becoming the most influential external actors inside the country as the U.S. troop withdrawal proceeds. Although there is concern in Washington about bilateral cooperation between Turkey and Iran, their differing visions for the broader Middle East region are particularly evident in Iraq, where a renewal of the historical Ottoman-Persian rivalry in Mesopotamia is likely as the dominant American presence fades. Turkey aims for a robust Iraqi political process in which no single group dominates, sees a strong Iraq as contributing to both its own security and regional stability, and is actively investing in efforts to expand Iraqi oil and gas production to help meet its own energy needs and fulfill its goal of becoming the energy conduit from the Middle East to Europe. The origins of cooking are lost in the mists of time. What little we know comes from interpretations of the clues left by our earlier ancestors. Cooking in any form could not have existed before mankind discovered how to control fire. Deliberate use of heat to alter raw foods must have followed shortly thereafter. What cannot be disputed is that humans have been passing down recipes since the earliest cooks developed tested ways to produce tasty meals. Cooking methods and recipes would have been passed orally from generation to generation for tens of thousands of years before humans discovered writing. Once writing was discovered, cookbooks would seem like a natural use of the new technology. The earliest known recipes come from Mesopotamia in 1700 BCE. This is where things remained until the 20th Century and the invention of television. The new medium allowed people to learn from others without actually being in their presence. This was a big step forward in the learning process. It has reached ...

Unit of measurement • Wikipedia
A unit of measurement is a standardised quantity of a physical property, used as a factor to express occurring quantities of that property. Units of measurement were among the earliest tools invented by humans. Primitive societies needed rudimentary measures for many tasks: constructing dwellings of an appropriate size and shape, fashioning clothing, or bartering food or raw materials. The earliest known uniform systems of measurement seem to have all been created sometime in the 4th and 3rd millennia BC among the ancient peoples of Mesopotamia, Egypt and the Indus Valley, and perhaps also Elam in Persia as well. Weights and measures are mentioned in the Bible (Leviticus 19:35-36). It is a commandment to be honest and have fair measures. In the Magna Carta of 1215 (The Great Charter) with the seal of King John, put before him by the Barons of England, King John agreed in Clause 35 There shall be one measure of wine throughout our whole realm, and one measure of ale and one measure of ...

When you dwell in a society that can barely see past the next fiscal quarter, the notion of historical context is more often than not in short supply…and whether you believe the U.S. invasion of Iraq is an international war crime or a major victory in the war on terror, its virtually impossible to fully appreciate the nuances of this ever-evolving situation without a firm grasp on whats come before. On many levels, writes Larry Everest in his meticulously researched book, the roots of the 2003 Iraq war extend back some 80 years to Great Britains invasion and conquest of the land of Mesopotamia, its 20-plus year occupation, and its creation of the country of Iraq. But, before your eyes glaze over, be warned: This is not an arcane history lesson. The British Mandate of Palestine and International Law - International Law - Oxford Bibliographies
The establishment of Great Britains mandate over Palestine generated complex issues of international law. The mandate system was devised at the Paris Peace Conference with little prior analysis that might have given a clear answer as to its meaning. Complicating any analysis was the fact that three varieties of mandate were established, as Classes A, B, and C, with differing roles for the mandatory power. The Palestine Mandate was a Class A mandate, meaning a more robust status than that provided for Class B or C territories. Even within Class A differences existed. The three Class A mandates were Mesopotamia (Iraq), Syria, and Palestine. Mesopotamia (Iraq) and Syria each had a local administration with the mandatory power in an advisory capacity, whereas in Palestine the administration consisted of British personnel. The mandate system was criticized at the time as a continuation of colonial rule in a new guise. Feeding this criticism was the fact that in Great Britains governance structure, ...

Lower Mesopotamia and the Persian Gulf Amorite kings at Isin, self-styled successors to Ur III, purged the Elamites, seized regional control, and alternated power with Larsa. Both cities maintained trade with the Persian Gulf. Excavations at Saar (Bahrain) show that local communities and private entrepreneurs grew wealthy through trade on behalf of royal palaces and temples. The increasing importance of copper from Magan (Oman) for bronze production is demonstrated through the incidence of Gulf stamp seals throughout Mesopotamia, Iran, Anatolia, the Persian Gulf, and the Indus Valley ...
Geography of Iraq - Wikipedia
The geography of Iraq is diverse and falls into four main regions: the desert (west of the Euphrates), Upper Mesopotamia (between the upper Tigris and Euphrates rivers), the northern highlands of Iraqi Kurdistan, and Lower Mesopotamia, the alluvial plain extending from around Tikrit to the Persian Gulf. The mountains in the northeast are an extension of the alpine system that runs eastward from the Balkans through southern Turkey, northern Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan, eventually reaching the Himalayas. The desert is in the southwest and central provinces along the borders with Saudi Arabia and Jordan and geographically belongs with the Arabian Peninsula. Most geographers, including those of the Iraqi government, discuss the countrys geography in terms of four main zones or regions: the desert in the west and southwest; the rolling upland between the upper Tigris and Euphrates rivers (in Arabic the Dijlis and Furat, respectively); the highlands in the north and northeast; and the alluvial plain ...
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy on Biology
Although modern biology is a relatively recent development, sciences related to and included within it have been studied since ancient times. Natural philosophy was studied as early as the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indian subcontinent, and China. However, the origins of modern biology and its approach to the study of nature are most often traced back to ancient Greece.[10][11] While the formal study of medicine dates back to Hippocrates (ca. 460-370 BC), it was Aristotle (384-322 BC) who contributed most extensively to the development of biology. Especially important are his History of Animals and other works where he showed naturalist leanings, and later more empirical works that focused on biological causation and the diversity of life. Aristotles successor at the Lyceum, Theophrastus, wrote a series of books on botany that survived as the most important contribution of antiquity to the plant sciences, even into the Middle Ages.[12] Scholars of the medieval Islamic ...
Assyrian continuity - Offline Wikipedia
Some academics, including the Assyrian historian John Joseph, largely reject the modern Assyrian claim of descent from the ancient Assyrians of Mesopotamia, and their succeeding the Sumero-Akkadians and the Babylonians as one continuous civilization.[61] He criticises modern Assyrian writers who eager to establish a link between themselves and the ancient Assyrians, conclude that such a link is confirmed whenever they come across a reference to the word Assyrians during the early Christian period, to them it proves that their Christian ancestors always remembered their Assyrian forefathers. Nationalist writers often refer to Tatians statement that he was born in the land of the Assyrians, and note that the Acts of Mar Qardagh trace the martyrs ancestry to Ancient Assyrian kings.[62] He claims that while The name Assyrian was certainly used prior to the nineteenth century . . . [it] was a well known name throughout the centuries and wherever the Bible was held holy, whether in the East ...

EPS Blog - Evangelical Philosophical Society
In Biblical Philosophy, Dru Johnson examines how the texts of Christian Scripture argue philosophically with ancient and modern readers alike. He demonstrates how biblical literature bears the distinct markers of a philosophical style in its use of literary and philosophical strategies to reason about the nature of reality and our place within it. Johnson questions traditional definitions of philosophy and compares the Hebraic style of philosophy with the intellectual projects of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Hellenism. Identifying the genetic features of the Hebraic philosophical style, Johnson traces its development from its hybridization in Hellenistic Judaism to its retrieval by the New Testament authors. He also shows how the Gospels and letters of Paul exhibit the same genetic markers, modes of argument, particular argument forms, and philosophical convictions that define the Hebraic style, while they engaged with Hellenistic rhetoric. His volume offers a model for thinking about ...

The New Evil Empire
The US seems to have decided that it cant take on China and Russia at the same time, so its principal geopolitical rival in the coming decades will be China. Trumps Republican administration and the Democrats agree on this, though they are campaigning vigorously against each other ahead of next years presidential election. China has replaced the evil empire of the Soviet Union and Islamic terrorism as the USs main adversary. But China, unlike the Soviet Union, has a dynamic economy, with which the US has an enormous trade deficit. And Chinas strength is far more impressive than that of a few tens of thousands of Islamic fundamentalist fighters wandering the deserts of ancient Mesopotamia or the mountains of Afghanistan.. Barack Obama instigated a US foreign policy pivot to Asia and the Pacific. Trump typically formulates the new strategy with less elegance and subtlety (see Curbing Chinas rise, in this issue). Trump views cooperation as a trap, a zero-sum game, so Chinas economic ...
Biblical Scholar: Dont take Bible literally - Topic
Im sure that you can easily recognize the Vanishing God traditions of other cultures. These myths concern the disappearance of fertility deities and the resulting withering of the land and loss of fertility. In Mesopotamia, there was the abduction of the shepherd god, Dumuzi, to the Underworld. The Greeks told the story of Persephones abduction to Hades. These stories are interpreted nowadays as the ancient means of explaining the recurring cycles of seasons: in some cases, the Persephone story divides the year into 4 and 8 months, in others it is 6 and 6. But is the modern explanation for why these stories developed the correct one? If we consider what we have already covered regarding repeating cometary bombardment, the story begins to make a lot more sense. Also, with the recovery of the texts of these dramatic extravaganzas, we may be justified in thinking that this is what was going on in the Mystery Religion initiatory performances ...

Agriculture had its origins about ten thousand years ago. Throughout most of that period farmers shared seeds, selected desired phenotypes of plants, and with keen observation and experience sought to understand the environmental factors affecting crop productivity. Through selective breeding, farmers chose plants that were best adapted to their region. By saving seeds of the more desired varieties they were able to achieve shortened growing seasons, larger fruits or vegetables, enhanced disease resistance and varieties with higher nutritional value. The birth of botany as a discipline can be traced to ancient Greece. Theophrastus of Eresos (371-287 BCE), a student of Aristotle, wrote two botanical treatises summarizing the results of a millennium of experience, observation, and science from Egypt and Mesopotamia.. By the Enlightenment of the seventeenth century, experimental science had emerged. The fields of agronomy and plant breeding developed out of that milieu. In 1865 Gregor Mendel ...

They sail on a churning ocean in an unknowable time and place that in my child mind, as yet un-cognizant of territories much beyond the street we lived on, might have been a million years ago or a hundred. The writers of these comics at once mystified and planted seeds of curiosity about ancient civilizations - the name Bêlit is Akkadian, an extinct Sumerian language of Akkad, the first empire of Mesopotamia. It means lady and goddess. Sonja, cognate of the Greek Sophia, refers to wisdom and skill. My itinerary as a girl was theirs: fantasy; adventure. They too lived in a monstrous time and place. 1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. 6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. 7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? 8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? 9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in ...

prostitutia sacra | Mythologica.ro
Unul dintre cele mai fascinante subiecte, inca confuze, este acela al sexului si abordarii lui in societatile antice. Cum era perceputa prostitutia sacra in lumea antica din Orientul Apropiat? Arhetipul prostituatei sfinte este foarte ciudat datorita dihotomiei termenilor si a contrastului intre imaginea sacra si casta pe langa sexualitate. Aceste motive au aparut de-a lungul timpului, fie in Biblie sau in scrierile clasice ale vremii. Ei vedeau aceste acte ca barbare si exotice, chiar in interpretarea cultelor si practicilor din Mesopotamia. Donkeys or asses, Equus africanus asinus, are domesticated members of the Equidae or horse family. The wild ancestor of the donkey is the African Wild Ass, E. africanus. Asses were first domesticated around 3000 BC,[3] or 4000 BC, probably in Egypt or Mesopotamia,[4] and have spread around the world. They continue to fill important roles in many places today. Green Pest Control
The struggles between humans and pests has raged on since the beginning of modern civilization. Whenever a community grows, there exists a need to feed that growing population, and where there are people, there are pests as well. They compete with humans for food and space, and will ultimately reduce their overall quality of life if left uncontrolled so it was necessary to take up arms against pests to protect valuable food sources. One of the oldest known weapons in this struggle is the pesticide.. Pesticides are substances and materials designed to drive away or kill pests, and people from all civilizations sought after and developed various kinds of pesticides. The earliest pesticides were naturally occurring, often found in nature as an element or a by-product of animals. One of the first known pesticides was sulfur. Farmers in ancient Mesopotamia scattered it across their crops to ward off pests, and it was effective against mildew, ringworm, ticks, and mites.. By the 15th century other ...

I also purchased Reconstructing Proto-Nostratic by Alan Bomhard, the elaboration of a macrofamily including Afro-Asiatic, Indo-European, Uralic, Altaic, Kartvelian, Elamo-Dravidian, Eskimo-Aleut, Sumerian and Etruscan. The inclusion of Afro-Asiatic is much debated, that is why I greatly appreciated Blazeks presentation of a new isogloss between Indo-European and Afro-Asiatic. Bomhard locates its homeland in the Mesolithic (pre-agriculture, maybe 15000 BCE) fertile crescent, particularly Northern Mesopotamia. A subfamily containing Uralic, Altaic and Indo-European developed in what is now Northern Aghanistan and Tajikistan, whence Uralic and Indo-European went westward in a parallel movement, but in the latter case also southward to India. I would say that India and Afghanistan are close enough, and that Bomhard, like everyone else, is conditioning by assuming the AIT beforehand. Well, no matter, I hope to meaningfully contribute to this ambitious debate. The idea of a genealogical tree of ...

Jericho and Çatalhöyük, dated to the eighth millennium BC, are among the earliest cities known to archaeologists.[44][51]. In the fourth and third millennium BC, complex civilizations flourished in the river valleys of Mesopotamia, India, China, and Egypt. Excavations in these areas have found the ruins of cities geared variously towards trade, politics, or religion. Some had large, dense populations, but others carried out urban activities in the realms of politics or religion without having large associated populations. Among the early Old World cities, Mohenjo-daro of the Indus Valley Civilization in present-day Pakistan, existing from about 2600 BC, was one of the largest, with a population of 50,000 or more and a sophisticated sanitation system.[52] Chinas planned cities were constructed according to sacred principles to act as celestial microcosms.[53] The Ancient Egyptian cities known physically by archaeologists are not extensive.[18] They include (known by their Arab names) El ...
