Tropical plants species face a very particular environment with highly variable light intensity, heat, low mineral availability and other abiotic stresses which might have led to the evolution of specific protective mechanisms. The understanding of mechanisms for tolerance over abiotic stress in these plants could help to protect tropical forests, allow a more intelligent grow of economically interesting species and improve crops. The study of non-model plants, the category for most tropical species, is hindered by the amount of available information and the quality of this data. Swietenia macrophylla has not been sequenced, since the end of this work. To perform an evaluation of gene expression it was necessary to clone previously partial sequences for all required genes and to design specific primers for PCR amplification, including the reference genes. This work was supported by phylogenetic analysis, nourished by available sequences of related species. On the contrary, Jatropha curcas is on ...

Human impacts have seriously damaged mangroves, and conservation of mangroves will require information on local and regional population genetic structures. Here, we report the development and polymorphism of eleven novel microsatellite markers, developed using next-generation sequencing on 56 samples of widespread mangrove species Xylocarpus granatum (Meliaceae) from nine populations across the Indo-West Pacific region. All loci were found to be polymorphic, with the number of alleles per locus ranging from four to 19. In a population from Sabah (Malaysia), the mean observed and expected heterozygosity per locus was 0.59 and 0.58, respectively. No null allele, significant linkage disequilibrium or deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was detected among all loci. The eleven markers developed can be valuable tools to conservation genetics of this species across its distributional range. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht ...

Soil organic carbon (SOC) supports essential functions in terrestrial biomes and global biogeochemical cycles, and tropical tree plantations are often called upon to reverse deforestation-induced SOC loss. Yet the comparative efficacy of different plantation types and associated drivers of SOC restoration remain unclear. Theory suggests that higher chemical and spatial heterogeneity of plant litter should promote greater efficiency of soil microbial communities involved in SOC formation, so we hypothesised that more species-diverse tree plantations should be more effective in accelerating recovery of SOC. To test this, we compared developmental recovery of SOC and soil microbial communities between monoculture (Swietenia macrophylla King, mahogany) and highly diverse and mostly native species plantations (termed "rainforestation"). All plantation types, which were aged 15 to 20 years, only restored the composition of the soil microbial community to 20-30% of the reference, selectively logged ...

Effect evaluation of using Toona sinensis leaf extract to safe animal products. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of adding Toona sinensis powder into sausage processing procedure on the microbial growth and antioxidation activity of sausage. Various dosages of the Toona sinensis powder were added into Chinese-style sausage. The analyzed items of sausage were pH values, total plate counts, Lactobacillus, Micrococcus counts, water activity, color evaluation, TBARS values and sensory evaluation. The total plate counts of samples were increased following extended the storage period. The total plate counts of adding Toona sinensis sausage were still below 7.0 log CFU/g after 6 weeks food processing. The Lactobacillus counts were also increased at storage experiment and were obviously increased after the fifth week storage. The L values of the treated groups were lower than that of in the control group. The TBARS values of sausage varied within a narrow range during the storage ...

The name catuaba (pronounced [ka.two.aba], a Guarani word that means "what gives strength to the Indian") is used for the infusions of the bark of a number of trees native to Brazil. The most widely used barks are derived from the trees Trichilia catigua and Erythroxylum vaccinifolium. Other catuaba preparations use the bark of trees from the following genera or families: Anemopaegma, Ilex, Micropholis, Phyllanthus, Secondatia, Tetragastris and species from the Myrtaceae. It is often claimed that catuaba is derived from the tree Erythroxylum catuaba, but this tree has been described only once, in 1904, and it is not known today to what tree this name referred. E. catuaba is therefore not a recognised species (Kletter et al.; 2004). Local synonyms are Chuchuhuasha, Tatuaba, Pau de Reposta, Piratancara and Caramuru. A commercial liquid preparation, Catuama, contains multiple ingredients, one of these being catuaba from Trichilia catigua. An infusion of the bark is used in traditional Brazilian ...

Interpretive Summary: Malaria is a serious disease affecting more than 500 million people worldwide every year. Recent estimates of the global malaria burden have shown increasing levels of malaria morbidity and mortality. The main factor contributing to the increasing malaria mortality and morbidity is the widespread resistance of Plasmodium falciparum to conventional antimalarial drugs such as chloroquine, sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) and amodiaquine. Since the parasites resistance to medicines continues to undermine malaria control efforts, new antimalarial agents are needed. Anthothecol, a limonoid of Khaya anthotheca (Meliaceae), showed potent antimalarial activity against malaria parasites with IC50 values of 1.4 and 0.17 uM using two different assays. Anthothecol might be a useful product for ...
In this study the collected dried Khaya Senegelansis leaves were washed, dried and grounded before being mixed with synthetic produced water for 24hr. The mixed solution was than stirred by using a magnetic stirrer.. The engine oil used to be mixed in the produced water solution was SAE40 Petromas Mach 5 Mineral Engine Oil with distilled water. The results from Partition Gravimetric Method shows that the dried Khaya Senegelansis leaves are good oil sorbents due to the ability to remove 73% of oil from the solution in ambient temperature.. Images obtained from the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Gemini models also proved that patches of oil appeared on the surface of the leaves after 24 hours of contact time.. This is because Khaya Senegelansis rich in phytochemical constituent which is lipophilic in nature. The constituents include flavonoids, carbohydrates, glycosides, saponins, tannins and anthraquinones. Saponins and flavonoids are the main components that contribute to oil absorption due ...

A bit of history: The demise of the inkwell began in the 1880s, with the invention of the first practical fountain pen by Lewis Waterman. Not only did Watermans writing instrument carry its own supply of ink, the flow of the ink was emitted in a regular, controllable stream. In 1939, Liszlo Biro, a proofreader from Hungary patented the first ballpoint pen. Eighteen years later the U.S. Post Office would replace all straight pens and inkwells with the much improved ballpoint. After centuries of use, the inkwell virtually disappeared from daily life. Inkwells also illustrate the class distinctions ...

When you think of "period" antique furniture, what first comes to mind? Chippendale? Sheraton? Hepplewhite? Phyfe? Of course. These are all direct word associations with the phrase "period." And with much justification since these are some of the all time great names in furniture history but another word belongs right up there with them - Mahogany. With some notable exceptions, it seems that the most remarkable pieces attributed to these remarkable men were all made of the Red King. Why?. Wood is generally separated into two categories, softwood and hardwood. Wood that comes from conifers, cone bearing evergreens, is deemed to be softwood in wood working circles. Everything else is deemed to be a hardwood, regardless of its density and includes such wide variations as maple, cherry and oak, truly hard woods, down to poplar and basswood, known for their soft composition and easy carving characteristics. Mahogany falls somewhere in between, not as hard as maple but stronger than basswood and ...

To rule out the possibility of any higher compounds fragmenting and contributing to the m∕z 63 signal in our dataset, we undertook correlation of all other monitored m∕z at which measurable signal was observed with the m∕z 63, but found no significant correlation (r2≤0.2) with any of them, which suggested that fragmentation of a larger volatile detected at higher mass-to-charge ratio was likely not responsible for the observed m∕z 63 signal. In particular, concerning the potential for other sulfur-containing compounds such as dimethyl disulfide (CH3SSCH3, DMDS), and dimethyl trisulfide ...

Polystachya Hook. consists of approximately 240 species, ranging over a wide geographic area. Up to now a very small number of papers dealing with molecular cytogenetics and phylogeny of the genus Polystachya were published. Last cytological analysis was made in year 1979 but it included only a small number of species. This research has involved the largest number of species so far, analyzing total number of 33 species from wide geographical area with the purpose of determining the correct number of chromosomes within the genus Polystachya. It was found that the genus Polystachya is very homogeneous in the context of chromosome number. Basic complement contains twenty chromosomes (x=20). Most of the species are diploids with 2n=2x=40 chromosomes, while 8 species are tetraploid (2n=4x=80) and only one specie is hexaploid (2n=6x=120). There are no significant variations in the distribution and position of heterochromatin within the genus. Most of the species posses heterochromatin blocks located ...

Information on on-going efforts to establish a network on the genetic resources of mahogany in the Neotropics. Based on concern about the genetic integrity of the mahoganies the Panel of Experts on Forest Gene Resources has over the years flagged the urgent need for national, regional and international action to promote and further the conservation and sustainable use of mahogany species. These calls for action are in line with similar recommendations passed by a number of national and international institutes and fora, notably by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). As a follow-up to a recommendation of the FAO Panel of Experts on Forest Gene Resources, the FAO Forestry Department recently published the report Genetic resources of Swietenia and Cedrela in the Neotropics - Proposal for coordinated action. The report, written as a synthesis paper by Mr. F. Patino of Mexico and based on contractual work for FAO by four experts from Central and South America, ...
