Aceptado: 08/04/2014. INTRODUCTION. The genus Tessmannianthus Markgr. has seven species and is restricted to the Neotropical countries of Panama , Colombia , Ecuador , and Peru (Almeda 1990). It is considered to be a member of the tribe Merianieae (Renner, 1993). Species in the genus are medium to large trees reaching 40 meters tall making them amongst the largest members of Melastomataceae (Almeda 1990). Tessmannianthus flowers are also unusual in that they are extremely heterantherous, with the small set of stamens bifurcating at the apex into two distinct pores whereas the large stamens have a single pore. This extreme heteranthery is used to diagnose the genus and gives the name to the type species, T. heterostemon Markgr. (Markgraf 1927). Another less uncommon but noteworthy feature of the androecium in Tessmannianthus is that the larger series of stamens are opposite the sepals rather than the petals, as is the more frequent condition in heterantherous taxa (Almeda 1989, Mendoza-Cifuentes ...
The Melastomataceae family, the seventh largest flowering plants, has been studied in several fronts of natural product chemistry, including terpenoids, simple phenolics, flavonoids, quinones, lignans and their glycosides, as well as a vast range of tannins or polyphenols. This review concerns the phenolic and polyphenolic metabolites described in the literature for several genera of this family, the mode of isolation and purification, and the structure elucidation of these new natural products that has been achieved by extensive spectral analyses, including ESI-MS, 1H-, 13C-NMR spectra and two-dimensional experiments, COSY, TOCSY, J-resolved, NOESY, HMQC, DEPT, and HMBC, as well as chemical and enzymatic degradations and the chemotaxonomic meaning. Finally, a general biogenetic pathway map for ellagitannins is proposed on the bases of the most plausible free radical C-O oxidative coupling.

Ulota calvescens had two Welsh and only one or two English records at the time of the first Atlas, and when I published the Pembs Flora in 2010 my Pembs record was mirrored by two in SW England and the two historic N Wales ones. Graham and I have now found several colonies in Brecs, Carms and Ceredigion, and todays record is the 10th for Carms. There are also lots of records from the Pennines, we had it in Dorset last summer, and even in East Sussex on the last BBS Spring meeting. This would have been unthinkable 10 years ago ...

Inferring the origins of hybrid taxa based on morphology alone is difficult because morphologically similar hybrids can arise from hybridization between different populations of the same parental species or be produced by hybridization of different parental species. In this study, we investigated the origins of two semi-creeping taxa in Melastoma, which are morphologically similar to a natural hybrid, M. intermedium, by sequencing a chloroplast intergenic spacer, nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) and two low-copy nuclear genes (tpi and cam) in these taxa and their putative parental species. Our sequence analysis results provide compelling evidence for the hybrid status of the two semi-creeping taxa: one originating from hybridization between M. dodecandrum and M. malabathricum, and the other between M. dodecandrum and M. normale. The origins of these hybrids are therefore clearly different from M. intermedium, and morphological similarity for the three hybrids is most likely due to

Two sedimentary cores with pollen, charcoal and radiocarbon data are presented. These records document the Late-glacial and Holocene dry forest vegetation, fire and environmental history of the southern Cauca Valley in Colombia (1020 m). Core Quilichao-1 (640 cm; 3° 6′N, 76° 31′W) represents the periods of 13 150-7720 14C yr BP and, following a hiatus, from 2880 14C yr BP to modern. Core La Teta-2 (250 cm; 3° 5′N, 76° 32′W) provides a continuous record from 8700 14C yr BP to modern. Around 13 150 14C yr BP core Quilichao-1 shows an active Late-glacial drainage system and presence of dry forest. From 11 465 to 10 520 14C yr BP dry forest consists mainly of Crotalaria, Moraceae/Urticaceae, Melastomataceae/Combretaceae, Piper and low stature trees, such as Acalypha, Alchornea, Cecropia and Celtis. At higher elevation Andean forest comprising Alnus, Hedyosmum, Quercus and Myrica was common. After 10 520 14C yr BP the floral composition of dry forest changed, with extensive open grass ...
However, beside Leguminosae, Mr Monod collected a good many other plants and though some of his material was necessarily scanty on account of the fact that the proper purpose of his trips lay outside purely botanical observations, it contains enough remarkable specimens, especially from the practically unknown interior of Central Celebes (Mt. Mamboeliling), to justify a record of them. Mr Monod has proved to be a keen observer and a thorough amateur botanist and geologist. Several of the specimens had been provisorily checked by Dr C. G. G. J. van Steenis, Buitenzorg, which was a great help in their final identification. Regarding this, it was my good fortune to win the help of several specialists in identifying specimens belonging to families falling within the scope of their special study. Thus I am indebted to the following investigators for their kind collaboration: Miss Dr G. J. H. Amshoff (Utrecht): Urticaceae. Dr R. C. Bakhuizen van den Brink (Leiden) : Melastomataceae. Dr C. E. Our original Princess Plant (Tibouchina urvilleana) was the first plant I noticed at P. Garden, planted by Jim who had rescued it from the street. She was a scraggly specimen with a split trunk and long, unbalanced branches that had not been looked after over the years. For her own good, she had to be pruned rather hard by Leah, and for a while there we wondered if she was going to make it. She has since bounced back and is currently putting on quite the display (photo bottom ...

The Mantel test between RAPD and ISSR Jaccards dissimilarity matrices gave r2 = 0.145, showing low correlation between these markers based on dissimilarities. Grouping of genotypes within groups was not similar in RAPD and ISSR derived dendrogram when compared, whereas the pattern of a grouping of the genotypes remained more or less the same in ISSR and combined data of RAPD and ISSR (Fig. S1, Fig. 4, Fig. 5, Fig. 6, Table S2, Table 4, Table 5).. The comparative analysis of RAPD, ISSR based marker systems revealed ISSR to be the best marker as it generated the highest percentage of polymorphisms, marker index (MI), average heterogeneity (Hav) and multiplex ratio (MR) (Table 5).. 4. Discussion. Despite the medicinal importance of the genus Memecylon, the information on phylogenetic relationships and genetic diversity is sparse. Identification of Memecylon species based on morphology is dynamic due to their close morphological similarities and their broad geographic distribution. While making ...

Many small-sized proteins and peptides, such as cytokines and hormones, are clinically used for the treatment of a variety of diseases. However, their short half-life in blood owing to fast renal clearance usually results in a low therapeutic efficacy and frequent dosing. Here we present the development of a human serum albumin (HSA)specific protein binder with a binding affinity of 4.3 nM through a phage display selection and modular evolution approach to extend the blood half-life of a small-sized therapeutic protein. As a proof-of-concept, the protein binder composed of LRR (Leucine-rich repeat) modules was genetically fused to the N-terminus of Glucagon-like Peptide-1 (GLP-1). The fused GLP-1 was shown to have a significantly improved pharmacokinetic property: The terminal half-life of the fused GLP-1 increased to approximately 10 h, and the area under the curve was 5-times higher than that of the control. The utility and potential of our approach was demonstrated by the efficient control of ...

Warneckea consists of shrubs and small trees endemic to tropical forests in Africa, Madagascar, and Mauritius. Phylogenetic analyses of sequence data from the transcribed spacers of nuclear ribosomal DNA (ETS, ITS) indicate that W. sect. Carnosa Jacq.-Fél. (1 sp., East Africa and Madagascar) is a divergent element that is best treated at subgeneric level. The analyses recovered three major lineages in W. subg. Warneckea, together forming a basal trichotomy. The three lineages represent W. sect. Strychnoidea (western and central Africa), sect. Warneckea (East Africa, Madagascar, Mauritius), and a third group with three West African species (W. fascicularis, W. guineensis, W. mangrovensis) comprising the newly proposed W. sect. Guineensea ...

A floristic and structural survey of the natural regeneration of shrubby and arboreal species of the understory of an established homogeneous plantation of Mimosa scabrella Bentham was corried out viewing, the reclamation of a mined area, in Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Nineteen plots of 50 m2 (5 m × 10 m) were used and the shrubby and arboreal individuals measuring equal or above 30 cm were sampled and 1,946 individuals belonging to 63 botanic families were found. Soil samples were collected at a depth of 0 to 20 cm, in each of the 19 plots, and the contents of sand, silt, clay, organic matters, pH nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium were analysed. The influence of the soil variables upon the density of the sampled species was analysed using the Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA). A significative correlation was verified among these variables at a level of 5% of probability using the Monte Carlo test. The species Miconia sellowiana, Miconia pepericarpa, ...

As you have discovered, Tibouchina urvilleana (Princess Plant) produces blooms on new shoots. To keep it blooming all season long youll want to prune it back to encourage the development of new stems. You dont have to shear it back like a hedge, but you should shorten individual stems begining in spring and continuing all summer to encourage a dense growing plant with lots of new stems developing throughout the plant. This will give you lots of blooms all over the plant ...
