Rainfall: Rainfall projections in summer show an increasing trend over both upper basins, with an increase of about 5-10% over the southern areas where the normal precipitation is low. In the upper part of these basins where the normal precipitation is higher, the projected increase ranges from 10-25%. Rainfall projections in winter also show increasing trends of about 10% over most parts of the basins. However, a small area over the southern part of the central area of the basins shows a decreasing trend by up to 5%. Temperature: Future warming in the summer season is projected over the entire upper Salween and Mekong basins, mostly in the range of 1.5-2.5°C, although it may exceed this ...
Public health measures aimed at reducing the spread of COVID-19 can have significant, unintended impacts on livelihoods. In this paper, we assess the impacts of responses to the COVID-19 pandemic on aquaculture farmers in five countries in the Mekong Region. A total of 1,019 farmers were surveyed (June-August 2020). The COVID-19 pandemic reduced farmer mobility, disrupted input and produce logistics, and reduced consumer demand, which in turn, reduced net income relative to expectations and increased the likelihood of making a net loss in the first half of 2020. Large aquaculture farms were more likely to experience adverse impacts from higher input prices and lower fish market prices than small farms. Intensive and commercial farms were more likely to be affected by supplier and buyer logistic disruptions. Coping responses included adjustments to stocking practices, reducing labor inputs, finding new markets, drawing on savings, and borrowing money. Large farms were more likely to seek new ...

N2 - Study region The Mekong floodplains and delta are among the most agriculturally productive and biologically diverse waterscapes of the world, but sea level rise, land subsidence, and the proposed upstream development of over 126 hydropower dams and extensive delta-based water infrastructure have raised concern due to potential impacts on the hydrology of the region. Study focus This study aims to quantify the effects of water infrastructure development, land subsidence and sea level rise on hydrological regimes of the Mekong floodplains and delta through the development and application of a hydrodynamic model. New hydrological insights for the region Depending on hydrological characteristics of each region ...
The relationships between human population movement (HPM) and health are a concern at the global level. In the case of malaria, those links are crucial in relation to the spread of drug-resistant parasites and to the elimination of malaria in the Greater Mekong sub-Region (GMS) and beyond. The mobile and migrant populations (MMP) who are involved in forest-related activities are both at high risk of being infected with malaria and at risk of receiving late and sub-standard treatment due to poor access to health services. In Cambodia, in 2012, the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) identified, as a key objective, the development of a specific strategy for MMPs in order to address these challenges. A population movement framework (PMF) for malaria was developed and operationalized in order to contribute to this strategy.. Read the full piece from Malaria Journal here.. ...
BACKGROUND: The importance of the submicroscopic reservoir of Plasmodium infections for malaria elimination depends on its size, which is generally considered small in low transmission settings. The precise estimation of this reservoir requires more sensitive parasite detection methods. The prevalence of asymptomatic, sub-microscopic malaria was assessed by a sensitive, high blood volume quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction method in three countries of the Greater Mekong Sub-region.. METHODS: Cross-sectional surveys were conducted in three villages in western Cambodia, four villages along the Thailand-Myanmar border and four villages in southwest Vietnam. Malaria parasitaemia was assessed by Plasmodium falciparum/pan malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), microscopy and a high volume ultra-sensitive real-time polymerase chain reaction (HVUSqPCR: limit of detection 22 parasites/mL). All villagers older than 6 months were invited to participate.. RESULTS: A census before the surveys ...
The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes Myanmar as having the highest burden of malaria in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS). Early diagnosis and proper treatment are critical in containing malaria. The objective of this study was to assess determinants of seeking treatment for fever from trained providers across rural and urban areas in Eastern Myanmar. A cross-sectional survey was conducted during the high malaria seasons in the eastern part Myanmar between August and September 2014. Multi-staged cluster sampling was used to sample households. A series of questions related to treatment-seeking for fever were asked. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions were conducted to identify independent correlates of seeking treatment for fever from trained providers. The analysis was restricted to 637 participants who reported either themselves or their family members having had fever 2 weeks prior to the interview. In the multivariate analysis, rural residents were less likely to have sought

Usually found in large rivers with a muddy substrate (Ref. 27732). Occurs in flooded fields (Ref. 12975). Feeds at night on worms, crustaceans and insects (Ref. 7020). Oviparous (Ref. 205). A strongly migratory species (Ref. 9497). Above the Khone Falls of the Mekong basin, it migrates into tributaries and small streams, where it spawns during the early flood season. When water starts to recede, it moves back to the main tributaries and to the Mekong mainstream. An upstream migration occurs from the Mekong Delta, around the saline intrusion zone to just below the Khone Falls between November and March. This migration is reportedly triggered by receding water levels. From May to July, the species migrates the opposite way, downstream from the Khone Falls to flooded areas in Southern Cambodia and the Mekong Delta in Viet Nam (Ref. 37770). Two individuals reared in captivity were reported to live up to eight years or more wherein one fish attained a size of 210 g and 9.577 cm SL while the other ...

The Mekong Delta in Vietnam has seen a rapid development and intensification of aquaculture in the last decades, with a corresponding widespread use of antibiotics. This study provides information on current antibiotic use in freshwater aquaculture, as well as on resulting antibiotic concentrations in the aquatic environment of the Mekong Delta. Two major production steps, fish hatcheries and mature fish cultivation, were surveyed (50 fish farm interviews) for antibiotic use. Different water sources, including surface water, groundwater and piped water (164 water samples) were systematically screened for antibiotic residues. To better understand antibiotic fate under tropical conditions, the dissipation behavior of selected antibiotics in the aquatic environment was investigated for the first time in mesocosm experiments. None of the investigated antibiotics were detected in groundwater and piped water samples. Surface water, which is still often used for drinking and domestic purposes by local ...
The Mekong is an exceptional river in many ways. In terms of fish biodiversity, it is the worlds second richest river after the Amazon (www.fishbase. org). With 6 to 18% of the global freshwater fish catch, it is also home to the largest freshwater fisheries in the world. The productive Mekong fisheries are essential to the food security of the 60 million people of the Lower Mekong Basin. Fish contributes 81% of the populations protein intake in Cambodia and 48% in Laos. Mekong inland fisheries also provide employment to 1.6 of the 14 million Cambodians ...
THE CHAIN-REACTION IMPACTS FROM THE DAMS: With the passing of time, the cumulative and irreversible chain-reaction impacts coming from the occluding rivers as well as the 26 mainstream dams (14 dams in the Mekong Cascades in Yunnan and 12 in the Lower Mekong) on the more than 4,800 kilometer-long Mekong include: 1/ Changes in the natural state of the river prevent its current from maintaining its seasonal flood pulse which is of vital importance to the Tonle Sap Lake, the heart that regulates the eco-system of the Mekong River and the Mekong Delta. 2/ Changes in the currents flow will result in a reduction in the wetland areas and destruction of the vital habitat required by the fish species of the Mekong that in turn will adversely affect the fish source and food security. 3/ The altered current threatens the diversity of the fish population including flagship species that serve as a gauge of the wellbeing of the Mekongs ecosystem like the Irrawaddy Dolphins and Pla Beuks that are facing ...

Section V.-The Central American Sub-region This Sub-region, as has been already shown, contains the coast-lands of Mexico lying along the Pacific and Atlantic shores from Mazatlan on the north on one side, and from the Rio Grande on the other, together with the whole of Central America from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec to that of Panama.. As regards the fauna of this part of America, we are fortunate in being able to refer to the excellent account of it contained in the Biologia Centrali-Americana of Messrs. Salvin and Godman. The volume relating to the mammals in this work was undertaken by Mr. Alston, and finally completed after his death by one of the authors of this work in 1882 (3). Out of a total of sixty-nine genera of mammals represented in this Sub-region, only two seem to be absolutely restricted to it, and these, moreover, are genera of bats, which may possibly be found at some future time to extend into the main South American continent .. Of the sixty-seven non-peculiar Central - ...

Previously initiated drug policies have kindled substantial efforts to combat the war on drugs in the Mekong. Record high seizures of substances have occurred in most recent years. In 2018, Thailand law enforcement seized 515 million methamphetamine tablets, which is 17 times greater than the amount for the entire Mekong region 10 years ago. Moreover, Thailand authorities captured more than 18 tons of crystal meth, resulting in a larger number than what authorities found in East and Southeast Asia combined five years ago. The Thai government implemented suppression campaigns along the Golden Triangle (Myanmar, Lao PDR, Thailand) borders, forcing the trafficking routes to its western border, by the Andaman Sea through Laos and Vietnam. These areas have had seizure numbers in the first half of 2019 that already surpass the 2018 totals.. While significant headway has occurred, the UNODC and MOU know continued actions need to happen to increase the suppression of narcotics within the region. UNODC ...

With regards to ProgPower Scandinavia, we are of course very disappointed by the fact that we once again have to find a replacement band, as this year seem to be the year of several cancellations. However, we decided to find a band similar to Zero Hour in musical expression, so we chose German technical prog-thrashers MEKONG DELTA to be a suitable and very welcomed replacement band. MEKONG DELTA is a band that we actually had in mind for the original line-up of PP Scandinavia 2008, but with Zero Hour already on the bill, we did not want two bands so close in sound. The unfortunate situation with Zero Hour gives us a good reason for picking up MEKONG DELTA, and we are very proud of having them perform at our festival. If you do not know who MEKONG DELTA are, we urge you to check out their latest album Lurking Fear from 2007 or some of their classic albums like Dances Of Death and Other Walking Shadows 1990 and The Principle of Doubt 1989. MEKONG DELTA is really one of the original ...

er is often referred to as the life blood as well as the heart and soul of mainland Southeast Asia, signifying its importance in, and for, the region. As the the seventh longest river in Asia, the Mekong rises in China and flows through Myanmar, the Lao Peoples Democratic Republic, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam before reaching the South China Sea. The river is also the worlds largest inland fishery, which leads to extremely fertile soils. As such, the region through which the Mekong flows, has been referred to as the rice bowl of Asia, thus providing food security for centuries.. More recently, a new aspect of the Mekong has been promoted and is facing further exploitation, its hydropower capacities. The rapid drop of the river gives the Mekong River Basin a great potential of 53,000 MW. The exploitation of this potential is regarded as a great opportunity for the development of less prosperous regions, notably in Laos and in the Chinese province of the Yunnan. Additionally, since ...

Our work aims at extending the random forests techniques for better performance, which contains two novel contributions: First, we design a novel strategy for training forests, to ensure that each forest is specialized in labeling the certain sub-region of the hippocampus in the images. In the testing stage, a novel approach is also presented for automatically finding the forests relevant to the corresponding sub-regions of the test image. Second, we present a novel localized registration strategy, which further reduces the shape ...

NAY PYI TAW, Myanmar 8 December 2017 - Representatives from Cambodia, China, the Lao Peoples Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam today called for accelerated action to eliminate malaria in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) by the year 2030.. The call comes amid concern over resistance of malaria parasites to antimalarial drugs, including artemisinin-the core compound of the best available antimalarial medicines. To date, resistance has been detected in five of the six GMS countries. The best way to address the threat posed by drug resistance is to eliminate malaria altogether from the countries of the Mekong.. At a high-level meeting convened by the Ministry of Health and Sports of Myanmar in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Asia Pacific Leaders Malaria Alliance (APLMA), representatives from the six GMS countries stressed that eliminating malaria in the Subregion requires urgent and coordinated action, with support from implementing agencies, ...

This study is to design an integrated eco-agricultural system for waste treatment in the acidic soil areas in the Mekong Delta. The system is based on recycling all of the materials (from the inputs, outputs, and wastes) under conditions of acidic soil towards zero emissions and maintaining sustainability for farmers livelihood. The system is demonstrated at Vo Van Thams farm in Thanh An Commune, Thanh Hoa District, Long An Province. The cost investment is 80,000,000 VND, and the cost is 60,000,000 VND for operating per year. The results show that the proposed system has benefits for the environment, for example wastewater is collected and treated at is178 m3/day, reduce the emission of 756 tons CO2t/year. 50% the amount of pig manure (about 3 tons/day) is separated from pig shed discharges entering the biogas system. It also helps to increase household income (the expected income is about 160,000,000 VND/year, and the payback period is less than 1 year). In addition, solutions are used for ...

Our knowledge of the mammals of this and the next Sub-region is very fairly complete, owing to the excellent handbook recently published by Mr. W. T. Blanford (2).. The Pangolin (Manis), which, with slight specific modifications, is also found in all the other Sub-regions as well as in the Ethiopian Region, is here the sole representative of the Edentates. The Sub-region is well provided with members of the various families of Ungulates. Three peculiar genera of Antelopes, which are not found beyond the limits of the Sub-region, have been already mentioned; other genera, such as the Gazelles (Gazella), the Goats (Capra), and the Sheep (Ovis), are found in other parts of the world as well as in this Sub-region, but are absent from the remaining Sub-regions.. All the families of Ungulates are common to this and the Ethiopian Region, except the Deer-family (Cervida), the entire absence of which from Africa south of the Atlas has already been commented upon.. The Rodents do not present any marked ...

This trip encapsulates the magic of Vietnam: the conservative north, the rich heritage of the imperial cities, coastal scenery and the vibrant life of Saigon and the Mekong Delta. We come face to face with an outgoing culture, where so much goes on in the streets: eating, washing, socialising, buying and selling or impromptu games. This intoxicating parade of Vietnamese daily life may leave us with our strongest memories, as much as the superb landscapes and amazing cuisine.

Headsman Vietnamese mystic Phan Xich Long was executed on this date in 1916 by the French, after attempting to expel their occupation and situate himself as Emperor of Vietnam.. In his youth a peripatetic fortune-teller and geomancer, Phan Phát Sanh (as he was then known) formed a secret society by 1911 centered around enforcing his rights as the purported long-lost descendant of Ham Nghi - an 1880s emperor whose short reign ended in French captivity.. The would-be emperor and his adherents made no bones at all about their rebellious ...
BACKGROUND: In Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, more than one-third of admissions to the two paediatric hospitals are attributable to four infectious syndromes: dengue, diarrhoeal disease, acute respiratory infection, and hand, foot and mouth disease. We have established a large prospective birth cohort study to investigate individual, environmental, virological, and immunological determinants of infection and disease in infants. Specific research questions are focused on the role of maternal antibody in protection against infection in infancy, and the adaptive immune response to vaccination and natural infection. This paper presents the cohort design, methods, and baseline characteristics of the participants enrolled in the first two years. METHODS/DESIGN: Women are enrolled prior to delivery at one hospital in each of two catchment areas: an urban district in central HCMC, and a mixed urban/rural district in the Mekong Delta 150 km southwest of HCMC. Infants are enrolled within 3 days of birth, and maternal
