Mutations in the BCKDHA, BCKDHB, and DBT genes can cause maple syrup urine disease. These three genes provide instructions for making proteins that work together as part of a complex. The protein complex is essential for breaking down the amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine, which are present in many kinds of food, particularly protein-rich foods such as milk, meat, and eggs.. Mutations in any of these three genes reduce or eliminate the function of the protein complex, preventing the normal breakdown of leucine, isoleucine, and valine. As a result, these amino acids and their byproducts build up in the body. Because high levels of these substances are toxic to the brain and other organs, their accumulation leads to the serious health problems associated with maple syrup urine disease.. Researchers are studying other genes related to the same protein complex that may also be associated with maple syrup urine disease. ...
Glycogen storage disease type VI (also known as GSDVI or Hers disease) is an inherited disorder caused by an inability to break down a complex sugar called glycogen in liver cells. A lack of glycogen breakdown interferes with the normal function of the liver.. The signs and symptoms of GSDVI typically begin in infancy to early childhood. The first sign is usually an enlarged liver (hepatomegaly). Affected individuals may also have low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) or a buildup of lactic acid in the body (lactic acidosis) during prolonged periods without food (fasting).. The signs and symptoms of GSDVI tend to improve with age; most adults with this condition do not have any related health problems. ...
Carnitine palmitoyltransferase II deficiency is a condition that prevents the body from converting certain fats called long-chain fatty acids into energy, particularly during periods without food (fasting). Carnitine, a natural substance acquired mostly through the diet, is required by cells to process fats and produce energy. People with this disorder have a faulty enzyme that disrupts carnitines role in processing long-chain fatty acids.. The three main types of carnitine palmitoyltransferase II deficiency are: a lethal neonatal form; a severe infantile form that affects the liver, heart, and muscles (hepatocardiomuscular form); and a less severe form that affects only the muscles (myopathic form). Infants with the lethal neonatal form of this disorder usually experience respiratory failure, liver failure, seizures, and an irregular heart beat (arrythmia) leading to cardiac arrest. In many cases, the brain and kidneys are also abnormal. Usually, affected infants do not survive their first ...

If there is a change in the number or structure of chromosomes, it can be problematic. For example, some cancers are the result of fragmented chromosomes pieced together. Additionally, Down syndrome, also known as trisomy 21, is the result of having an extra copy of the twenty-first chromosome. Individuals with trisomy 21 have 47 chromosomes.. REFERENCES. Genetics Home Reference : 25 Clouston syndrome is a form of ectodermal dysplasia, a group of about 150 conditions characterized by abnormal development of some or all of the ectodermal structures, which include the skin, hair, nails, teeth, and sweat glands. Specifically, Clouston syndrome is characterized by abnormalities of the hair, nails, and skin, with the teeth and sweat glands being unaffected. In infants with Clouston syndrome, scalp hair is sparse, patchy, and lighter in color than the hair of other family members; it is also fragile and easily broken. By puberty, the hair problems may worsen until all the hair on the scalp is lost (total alopecia). The eyelashes, eyebrows, underarm (axillary) hair, and pubic hair are also sparse or absent. Abnormal growth of fingernails and toenails (nail dystrophy) is also characteristic of Clouston syndrome. The nails may appear white in the first years of life. They grow slowly and gradually become thick and misshapen. In some people with Clouston ...
Genetics Home Reference : 25 Chronic atrial and intestinal dysrhythmia (CAID) is a disorder affecting the heart and the digestive system. CAID disrupts the normal rhythm of the heartbeat; affected individuals have a heart rhythm abnormality called sick sinus syndrome. The disorder also impairs the rhythmic muscle contractions that propel food through the intestines (peristalsis), causing a digestive condition called intestinal pseudo-obstruction. The heart and digestive issues develop at the same time, usually by age 20 ...

age-related macular degeneration Genetics Home Reference provides information about age-related macular degeneration. hereditary cerebral amyloid angiopathy At least one mutation in the CST3 gene has been found to cause hereditary cerebral amyloid angiopathy, a condition characterized by stroke and a decline in intellectual function (dementia), which begins in mid-adulthood. The CST3 gene mutation that has been identified causes a form of hereditary cerebral amyloid angiopathy known as the Icelandic type. This mutation replaces the protein building block (amino acid) leucine with the amino acid glutamine at position 68 in the cystatin C protein (written as Leu68Gln or L68Q). This abnormal cystatin C protein is less stable and is more prone to cluster together (aggregate) than the normal protein. The aggregated protein forms clumps called amyloid deposits that accumulate in the blood vessel walls primarily in the brain, but also in blood vessels in other areas of the body such as the skin, ...
Cri-du-chat syndrome is a genetic condition. Also called cats cry or 5P- (5P minus) syndrome, its a deletion on the short arm of chromosome 5. Its a rare condition, occurring in only about 1 in 20,000 to 1 in 50,000 newborns, according to the Genetics Home Reference. But its one of the more common syndromes caused by chromosomal deletion.. Cri-du-chat means cry of the cat in French. Infants with the syndrome produce a high-pitched cry that sounds like a cat. The larynx develops abnormally due to the chromosome deletion, which affects the sound of the childs cry. The syndrome is more noticeable as the child ages, but becomes difficult to diagnose past age 2.. Cri-du-chat also carries many disabilities and abnormalities. A small percentage of infants with cri-du-chat syndrome are born with serious organ defects (especially heart or kidney defects) or other life-threatening complications that can result in death. Most fatal complications occur before the childs first birthday.. Children ...

Wow, you nearly had us stumped. This is such a unique looking creature that we thought it would be easier to identify. We believe it is some larval or pupal stage of an insect. We wish your image had better details as we cannot even begin to try to classify this creature. Our best guess at this time is that this is the Pupa of a Tortoise Beetle from the subfamily Cassidinae based on its resemblance to this image, also from Costa Rica, posted on FlickR. It is obvious that they are not the same species, but there are similarities. Not wanting to give up, we continued to search and we found an image on FlickR from Mexico that is identified as the larva and adult Wild Olive Tortoise Beetle, but alas, there is no scientific name. The poster, Seth Patterson, writes: one of most common here in the Lower Rio Grande Valley is a larger species that feeds on our Mexican Wild Olive trees. They are called the Wild Olive Tortoise Beetle. My first encounter with this species left me truly smitten. I actually ...

I was reading an article today about how a person was able to edit Wikipedia articles to help with his online niche websites and I wanted to try to test this idea.. I have been using Wikipedia as a resource to do research since I was in college and it has been amazingly helpful and useful. It seems that anyone in the world can edit the Wikipedia articles as long as they are really being helpful and trying to create a better resource.. So I created my own Wikipedia account under the username Height_Analyst and did a slight edit on the articles for Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound and Epiphyseal Plate. Right after the sentence where it states that Dr. Chen of the University of Alberta thinks that LIPUS can possibly lead to grow taller by stimulating bone growth I added the sentence However it has not been shown to be able to help in bone longitudinal growth when combined with bioengineered cartilage pellets for growth plate induced fractures. Hello Wikipedia, My name is Jordan, I am an undergraduate at Rice University, and I am here to propose the writing of a new Wikipedia article on Diarrhea in Developing Regions. Diarrheal diseases are among the most prolific in the world, accounting for a significant fraction of all infections, as well as a massive number of child mortalities. Given that children with diarrhea are significantly more likely to die, most within the first two years of life, Diarrheal diseases are a serious threat to the livelihood of children globally. Clearly, diarrheal disease is a significant issue in developing regions, and I hope to use this Wikipedia entry to outline the impacts of diarrheal disease, elucidate the primary causes of the issue (usually linking back to poverty and limited access to vital resources and human capabilities) and finally discuss both potential solutions and those that have already been implemented in these at-risk regions. I will draw my information from a variety of academic sources, ...

Sipping raw, whole, grass-fed milk is a bit like tasting fine wine: a familiar experience, but much more special.. That was my feeling when I drank a glass this week from De Smet Dairy in Bosque Farms, New Mexico, a small town nestled in the middle Rio Grande Valley.. With his wife Erica, Mike De Smet, a mid-thirties, third-generation farmer, owns and operates the states only Grade A dairy farm and bottling facility for raw milk.. After locals had come by to stock up - at $10 a gallon, its not cheap - De Smet would load up his truck and transport that days bottled production up to Albuquerque, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north. His milk sells out every week.. De Smet Dairy is one of six western farm operations profiled in a new report just released by the National Young Farmers Coalition (NYFC) that showcases how these young farmers are adapting to drought and water stress, and raising productivity on their lands.. Sponsored by The McAllen Public Utility Board. Featuring 55 South Texas Natives: 24 Cactus, 17 Plants, and 14 Trees!. Why plant Cactus?. Cactus plants are desert plants native to the Americas. Most of us picture deserts as hot, dry places with lots of sand and few plants. By definition, deserts receive less than 10 inches of rain a year. Consequently they are often dry and hot. Desert eco-systems can be formed over time and can be increased by our activity. Activities such as overgrazing, over-irrigation, cutting down trees and forests-destroys the natural plant life and increases the heat island effect in cities.. The Rio Grande Valley has experienced desert like droughts in the valley and this could continue in years to come. Increasing the percentage of native plants in the valley will not only reduce our water consumption but will add much beauty and traditional landscape to valley. Cactus can add such a beautiful south Texas flair to your garden and help diminish the optional water use of ...

AMY GOODMAN: Carlos Hernandez was arrested near the border in the South Rio Grande Valley May 13th and taken to a processing center in McAllen, Texas, where hundreds of migrants are held in large pens and forced to sleep on mats. U.S. law typically requires minors to be sent to facilities operated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services within three days of being detained, but Carlos was held in McAllen for more than double that time. 2-1-02. Some scientists agree, and historical evidence suggests, that the Aloe Vera plant originated in the warm, dry climates of Africa. However, because the plant is readily adaptable, and because man has been so eager to carry it with him from place to place, it now can be found in many warm lands. In the United States, it is grown commercially in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, in California and Florida, and in specially-designed greenhouses in Oklahoma. Although Aloe Vera is a tropical plant, the root can survive freezing air temperatures, so long as the ground is not frozen and the root destroyed. The plant need not be destroyed for damage to occur. The leaves may be damaged and vital nutrients may be lost at air temperatures of forty degrees Fahrenheit. Such damage may be severe at thirty-five degrees. Conversely, the plant can grow at temperatures as great as 104 F. It will survive temperatures higher still, and can withstand even severe drought. Nonetheless, it will thrive in humid ...

Dr. Peter Hotez and co-authors discuss the tragedy of Chagas disease in North America. In North America, Chagas disease (American trypanosomiasis caused by Trypanosoma cruzi) was first reported in Mexico in 1940 and in the United States in Texas in 1955. However, based on ancient mummified remains discovered in the Rio Grande Valley, human T. cruzi infection has been present in North America since prehistoric times.. Continue reading. ...

Caterpillars, 1 inch long when fully grown, are pale yellowish green with yellow stripes along their sides. Each body segment is also marked with rows of black dots. Another subspecies, Phoebis sennae marcellina (Cramer), occurs in the Rio Grande Valley. Males are more patterned underneath with orange-brown and females have a warmer shade of yellow on the upper surface and a ground color of pinkish-orange on the underside. Thirty six species of Pieridae, butterflies called "whites" or "sulfurs" occur in Texas. Adults of the alfalfa caterpillar, Colias eurytheme Boisduval, are commonly seen sulfur butterflies. Adults have a 2 inch wingspan and wings are yellow to orange-yellow with black markings along the wing margins (on males, markings are solid and in females, black markings are interrupted by

I wrote the bulk of this wikipedia article (although I didnt create it). At several points the page has been vandalized, but wasnt nominated for deletion until I listed the article under Category: Atheists. As you can see, many parties not particularly interested in Bryan showed up to vote Keep, as the nomination was made in bad faith by a religious nut trying to reduce the atheist presence on wikipedia. Its an interesting community.... Of course, the fact that someone sought to delete Bryan in no way makes him particularly notable, as there are several deletionist wikipedians who spend considerable time scouring wikipedia for non-notable or unencyclopedic articles and nominating them for deletion (AfD). The decision to keep, in this case, was because the nomination was made in bad faith - but were a good faith nomination made, Im confident the article would stand up, as Bryan has major publications, a strong internet presence, and impressive returns from google / google scholar (all ...
Although Wikipedia standards require discussion of gender, sexuality and homosexuality in straight-forward plain English terms, the article [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netball_in_the_Cook_Islands Netball in the Cook Islands] (a subject that has nothing to do with sexuality) decided to comment on the fact that some men and boys on the Cook Islands play what was historically a womens sport: Most of the men and boys who play in these gender subverting netball games are straight, though a few of the men are laelae.,ref,{{cite web,url=http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Netball_in_the_Cook_Islands&diff=prev&oldid=417354541,author=Laura Hale, title=Netball in the Cook Islands, date=March 6, 2011}},/ref, Why use judgmental terms like gender subverting? The English version of the online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, has been recently reported to be the prominent source of online health information. However, there is little information concerning the quality of information found in Wikipedia. Therefore, we created a questionnaire asking for scope, completeness, and accuracy of information found on osteosarcoma. Three independent observers tested the English version of Wikipedia, as well as the patient version and the health professional version of the US National Cancer Institute (NCI) website. Answers were verified with authoritative resources and international guidelines. The results of our study demonstrate that the quality of osteosarcoma-related information found in the English Wikipedia is good but inferior to the patient information provided by the NCI. Therefore, non-peer-reviewed commonly used websites offering health information, such as Wikipedia, should include links to more definitive sources, such as those maintained by the NCI and ...

My main contributions to Wikipedia are articles on elections, referendums, political parties and politicians, focusing on countries outside the main Anglosphere. I also dabble in football (particularly non-League football) and have previously created large numbers of articles on places in Israel and Suffolk. The main reason I edit Wikipedia is a belief that every person on the planet has the right to access the accumulated knowledge of humanity. Giving people access to this knowledge allows them to make informed decisions - one only has to look at how desperate repressive countries like North Korea are to stop their citizens finding out the truth to see how important it is. The even sadder thing is that access to the facts from a neutral, reliable and trusted source is needed more than ever in the free world. Several years ago I wrote that the 2011 AV referendum in the UK was a prime example of deliberate misinformation by parties and the majority of the media. Sadly, since then things have ...
