Various plants have been used against cancer in folk traditional medicine of Bangladesh. . Traditional medicinal knowledge has been a means towards the discovery of many modern medicines (Cotton, C.M., 1996). Bangladesh has a rich history of several traditional medicinal systems, among whom the most notable ones are the Ayurvedic, Unani, and the folk medicinal systems. Folk medicine is practiced by Kavirajes who utilize simple formulations of medicinal plants in most of their preparations. Recently World Health Organization has shown great interest in documenting the use of medicinal plants used by tribes from different parts of the world. Many developing countries have intensified their efforts in documenting the ethnomedical data and scientific research on medicinal plants. Natural products or natural product derivatives comprised 14 of the top 35 drugs in 2000 based on worldwide sales (Butlet, 2004). I love folk medicine. My mom was the daughter of an itinerant farm worker. So money was scarce as she grew up. Her family relied heavily on natural means to treat illness. And she passed much of that on to me. She grew up in Oklahoma and Texas, where theres a large population of Native Americans. As a result, her family used many folk remedies from the Natives. And I had a deep love of the Native culture. So when I find folk remedies from their culture, I get excited - especially when they work so well.

It has long been apparent that an increased susceptibility to infectious diseases is common in malnourished human populations. This has traditionally been viewed as simply a consequence of the fact that the immune system must be maintained by adequate nutrition in order to function optimally. Only recently has data begun to accumulate in support of the idea that nutritional factors may sometimes have a direct effect on pathogens, and that passage through nutritionally deficient hosts may facilitate evolutionary changes in infectious agents.[1]. The mechanisms of cell death, apoptosis, necrosis, pyroptosis, or autophagic cell death depends on a cells ability to cope with the conditions to which it is exposed. The adaptive capacity of a cell ultimately determines its fate when it comes under stress. The strength or what we can call a cells adaptive capacity is directly related to nutritional sufficiency and proper cellular respiration that removes all toxins and wastes through the cell wall. ...

Id be willing to wager that you, Grouse, dont believe that any so-called alternative health practices have any proven medical merit. Of course there is a time and place for allopathic medicine! Theres more out there than can be explained by traditional medicine, folks. Anyone who is sure they know all the ways in which all alternative medicines are proven ineffective is just plain arrogant. African traditional medicine is the oldest, and perhaps the most assorted, of all therapeutic systems. Africa is considered to be the cradle of mankind with a rich biological and cultural diversity marked by regional differences in healing practices. African traditional medicine in its varied forms is holistic involving both the body and the mind. The traditional healer typically diagnoses and treats the psychological basis of an illness before prescribing medicines, particularly medicinal plants to treat the symptoms. The sustained interest in traditional medicine in the African healthcare system can be justified by two major reasons. The first one is inadequate access to allopathic medicines and western forms of treatments, whereby the majority of people in Africa cannot afford access to modern medical care either because it is too costly or because there are no medical service providers. Second, there is a lack of effective modern medical treatment for some ailments such as malaria and/or ...

Historically, people have collected plants and used them for treating and preventing various symptoms and diseases. To this day, people in East Asian countries use medicinal plants for traditional health care treatments. The World Health Organization (WHO) has acknowledged the importance of traditional medicines. Approximately 60,000 plant species are harvested mainly for medicinal usage in the world. These harvested medicinal plants are not only a major source for traditional medicine, but are also used as an important raw material for modern medicine, perfume, cosmetic products, etc. Demand for and trade in these medicinal plants have been increasing. The global reported trade in plants for medicinal purposes alone(customs code HS1211, a subset of the custom codes analysed in the International Trade Centre study)was valued at over USD 3.4 billion in 2014 (United Nations 2016). Navigating environmental change and sustaining environmental commons (e.g. the climate system, wildlife, freshwater) will depend, in a large part, on coordinated action across levels (local, regional, global) and knowledge systems (Reid et al. 2006; Armitage 2008; Berkes 2012). While knowledge systems are themselves a kind of commons (Hess and Ostrom 2006), our emphasis in this paper is on environmental commons and the ways of knowing (or knowledge systems) associated with them. Different environmental commons are shared by diverse social actors with unique (although not independent) forms and types of knowledge (e.g. indigenous and western knowledge). Identifying opportunities to bridge different knowledge systems has been a key theme in commons governance for some time (Ostrom et al. 2002; Reid et al. 2006), although getting clarity on the appropriate settings in which to do so remains a challenge.. Diverse types and sources of knowledge can make important contributions towards understanding ...
The use of medicinal plants as a fundamental component of the African traditional healthcare system is perhaps the oldest and the most assorted of all therapeutic systems. In many parts of rural Africa, traditional healers prescribing medicinal plants are the most easily accessible and affordable health resource available to the local community and at times the only therapy that subsists. Nonetheless, there is still a paucity of updated comprehensive compilation of promising medicinal plants from the African continent. The major focus of the present review is to provide an updated overview of 10 promising medicinal plants from the African biodiversity which have short- as well as long-term potential to be developed as future phytopharmaceuticals to treat and/or manage panoply of infectious and chronic conditions. In this endeavour, key scientific databases have been probed to investigate trends in the rapidly increasing number of scientific publications on African traditional medicinal plants. Within
Being an isolated locality and having a tough mountainous terrain, strong ethnomedicinal practices still prevail in Dhirkot and its allied areas, which have been rarely explored yet. The present study was intended with the aim to document and compare the traditional knowledge of local communities on botanical taxa of Dhirkot, Azad Jammu, and Kashmir. Ethnomedicinal data were collected from 74 informants using a semi-structured questionnaire in addition to field observation and group discussion. Various indices were also used to evaluate the ethnomedicinal data. Furthermore, the present findings were compared with previous reports to assess data novelty. A total of 140 medicinal plant species belonging to 55 families were recorded, which are used by local communities to treat 12 disease categories. Asteraceae was dominating with 20 species, followed by Poaceae, Lamiaceae, and Rosaceae (14, 11, and 10 species, respectively). Herbs were leading with 66% contribution, whereas leaves were the most utilized
Background: The use of traditional medicines in Kenya accounts for more than 70% or more of basic health-care treatments. Documentation of herbal plants is necessary because they are becoming more important, especially due to escalating costs of drugs and the focus on organic products in most developing countries. More so, with the development of resistance of pathogens to drugs, ethno-veterinary and ethno-human medicine might be the route to take since herbs tend to be broad spectrum in use. The aim of this study was to document traditional knowledge on ethnobotanical uses of medicinal plants in Kitui County. Method: Data was collected through semi-structured open-ended questionnaires administered to 68 households in the study area. Simple random sampling was used to select households who were the final sampling units. Results: Majority of the respondents (51.5%) had attended school up to primary level. Only about 6% of respondents were engaged as full-time herbalists whereas 90% had acquired

Background: Nitric oxide (NO) is a crucial signaling molecule which regulates the blood flow and prevents the adhesion of blood components to the vascular wall. A deficiency in bioavailable NO concentration is associated with the dysfunction of endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) and/or an increase in oxidative stress. The deficiency of bioavailable NO is a common denominator of several cardiovascular diseases, including diabetes, atherosclerosis, and hypertension. Materials and Methods: We used a nanomedical technology to elucidate the balance between bioavailable NO and oxidative stress (peroxynitrite ONOO−) in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) treated with a supplement containing L-arginine, L-citrulline, Vitamin D3, and antioxidants. Nanosensors, with a diameter of 200-300 nm, are capable of measuring in situ NO and peroxynitrite (ONOO−) concentrations produced by single endothelial cells. Results: The ratio of the concentration of cytoprotective NO [NO] to the concentration of ...
