Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has many unique features. Thequality-of-life (QoL) instrument for lung cancer based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (QLASTCM-Lu) was the first self-reported instrument specifically developed to assess the quality of life from the perspective of TCM. Structured group methods and theory in developmental rating scale were employed to establish a general and a specific module, respectively. Quantitative and qualitative data from 240 lung cancer patients were collected to assess the psychometric properties. The three identified scales of the QLASTCM-Lu (correspondence between man and universe, unity of the body and spirit, and lung cancer specific module) and the total score demonstrated excellent psychometric properties. Test-retest reliability of all domains ranged from 0.93 to 0.96, and internal consistency |i|α|/i| ranged from 0.86 to 0.93. Correlation and factor analysis demonstrated good construct validity. Significant differences in the QLASTCM-Lu scales and

Hypertension is one of the major risk factors of cardiovascular diseases. It contributes to one half of the coronary heart disease and approximately two thirds of the cerebrovascular disease burdens [1]. There are over 972 million hypertension patients in the world [2].Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been playing an important role on treating hypertension, and it lies primarily in treatment based on syndrome differentiation of the patients. Traditionally, syndrome differentiation is performed by TCM practitioner should have solid theoretical foundation and plentiful experiences.. In the field of data mining, syndrome differentiation can be regarded as a patient classification problem which can be solved with specific data mining and machine learning techniques. It has become a fast developing field with the accumulating of clinical data [3-6].. In traditional classification problems, one case would be only classified to one category (i.e. label) which is called single label ...

The application of systems biology methods to Traditional Chinese Medicine Emphasizing the harmony of the human body with the environment, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has evolved over thousands of years. It is a systemic theory derived from clinical experience, the philosophy of holism and systematology, and the belief that man is an integral part of nature. Systems Biology for Traditional Chinese Medicine describes how the latest methods in systems biology can be applied to TCM, providing a comprehensive resource for the modernization and advancement of TCM as well as general drug discovery efforts. It is the first comprehensive work to propose a system-to-system research methodology to study the interaction between TCM and the human body and its applications in drug research and development. Using three popular traditional Chinese medicines-Shuanglongfang, Qingkailing, and Liushenwan-as examples, the authors set forth case examples demonstrating how to find material groups, perform efficacy
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the 30th anniversary of the Alma-Ata Declaration, which for the first time called upon governments and organizations to include traditional medicine in their primary health care systems. Following the Alma-Ata Declaration, WHO established its own Traditional Medicine Programme.. To commemorate these anniversaries and to support countries as they work toward the goals of Alma-Ata, WHO is cosponsoring (with the Ministry of Health of China and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of China) a Summit Congress on Traditional Medicine in November in Beijing, China. Because animal products are a significant component of some traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Advocacy for Animals is rerunning our October 2007 article “Traditional Chinese Medicine and Endangered Animals†as the Congress approaches. Contact: Nicole Napoli, [email protected], 202-375-6523. WASHINGTON (Jun 12, 2017) -. Traditional Chinese medicine might be effective as a complement or alternative to traditional Western medicine for primary and secondary prevention of heart disease, according to a state of the art review paper published today in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death worldwide, and despite advances in Western medicine for treating and preventing heart disease, unmet needs remain. As a result, traditional Chinese medicine is being increasingly looked at as a supplement to Western medicine, but to date randomized controlled trials are overall of poor quality and flawed. Western scientists often reject Chinese medicine for specific reasons: the formula consists of dozens of ingredients with many chemical molecules, making it hard to clarify the therapeutic mechanism; the medications available in China do not undergo the same rigorous approval process as Western ...

Based on a previous systematic literature review of clinical studies on cupping therapy, this study presents a thorough review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the therapeutic effect of cupping therapy. Method Six databases were searched for articles published through 2010. RCTs on cupping therapy for various diseases were included. Studies on cupping therapy combined with other TCM treatments versus non-TCM therapies were excluded. Results 135 RCTs published from 1992 through 2010 were identified. The studies were generally of low methodological quality. Diseases for which cupping therapy was commonly applied were herpes zoster, facial paralysis (Bell palsy), cough and dyspnea, acne, lumbar disc herniation, and cervical spondylosis. Wet cupping was used in most trials, followed by retained cupping, moving cupping,
Date of action: April 8, 2013. Description of action taken. On October 18, 2012, the CTCMA initiated an investigation under s.33 of the Health Professions Act, R.S.B.C. 1996, c. 183 (the Act) in response to a complaint received by a female patient alleging that the Registrant had asked her inappropriate sexual-related questions during a treatment session. The Inquiry Committee determined under s.33(6)(c) of the Act to seek a consent order under s.36 of the Act with terms that would ensure that the Registrant did not repeat the conduct.. Reasons for action taken. The Inquiry Committee determined that this was an appropriate case to seek a consent order because:. ...
Years ago, her uncles son suffered skin disease when he was just one and a half years old. From the description she gave, it sounded like psoriasis- where there are huge swellings and outbreaks on the skin. The parents took their young child to all the specialists and tried various alternative healing methods…..but none worked.. Desperate, they turned to traditional Chinese medicine. The TCM physician specially made a soap using special herbal formula for the young boy to use to bathe. As well as bitter Chinese medicine were being prescribed. While taking the Chinese medicine, the child had to abstain from certain types of food.. Chinese medicine is usually slow acting and the treatment lasted for about 6 months. The symptoms subsided after 6 months and one can say that the child is cured. Today, years later, my friend said that the boy now have normal skin.. Another grown-up friend I know is not so lucky. This Chinese guy grew up from a poor family and he may have had those symptoms but the ...
The article also stresses the potential that traditional Chinese medicines could have in drug discovery efforts, in particular in finding multicomponent therapeutics that combine two or more active ingredients into one single dose to hit several targets at once. The herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine can easily have over 50 chemical components. Although each single component might not be active, in combination they might be able to potentiate the effects of other chemical components, or they might work in combination to produce unexpected results. Additionally, traditional Chinese medicines are often prescribed in combinations. Would it be possible to combine the well established formulae of traditional Chinese medicines with Western medicine to produce combinations of drugs with lower risks of adverse drug-drug interactions? Now that we know traditional Chinese medicine has somewhat of a scientific basis, hopefully more work will be completed in this area. Acupuncture has already gained ...
The practice of acupuncture and moxibustion is based on the theory of meridians. According to this theory, qi (vital energy) and blood circulate in the body through a system of channels called meridians, connecting internal organs with external organs or tissues. By stimulating certain points of the body surface reached by meridians through needling or moxibustion, the flow of qi and blood can be regulated and diseases are thus treated. These stimulation points are called acupuncture points, or acupoints.. Acupoints reside along more than a dozen of major meridians. There are 12 pairs of regular meridians that are systematically distributed over both sides of the body, and two major extra meridians running along the midlines of the abdomen and back. Along these meridians more than three hundred acupoints are identified, each having its own therapeutic action. For example, the point Hegu (LI 4), located between the first and second metacarpal bones, can reduce pain in the head and mouth. The ...

BEIJING - The revision of a long-controversial rule on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is stranded amidst heated debates. While the government-led revision committee is analysing its stipulations for future implementation, some experts say the stagnancy is largely a result of the gap between the modern patent system and the protection efforts for traditional knowledge like TCM.. The Regulation on TCM Prescription Protection is an attempt to offset the insufficiency of modern IP system in preserving intellectual property of TCM, but neither the original rule nor the current revision draft has met this goal, says Zhang Tao, an associate professor of intellectual property at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.. Nearly two years after the revision was launched, Chinas drug authorities - the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) - released the first amendment draft in June 2006, but the texts immediately aroused wide refutations. Since then, no advance of the revision has been ...

Aim of the study: To investigate the neuroprotective effect of aqueous extract of modified Wu-Zi-Yan-Zong granule (MWG), a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, against CoCl2-induced neurotoxicity in PC12 cells. Materials and methods: Cell viability assay, apoptosis rate assay, ROS detection and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) assay were performed. In addition, cytochrome c, caspase-3, PARP and MAPKs were also detected by Western blotting. Results: MWG extract increased viability and suppresses early and middle/late stage apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner in CoCl2-induced PC12 cells. Moreover, MWG extract decreased the level of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), increased MMP, regulated Bcl-2 family protein expression (Bcl-2 and Bcl-XL) and inhibited the release of cytochrome c from the mitochondria. In addition, MWG extract attenuated activation of caspase-3 and poly ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) and inhibited the phosphorylation of ERK, c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38 ...

Liuwei Dihuang (LWDH), a classic Chinese medicinal formula, has been used to improve or restore declined functions related to aging and geriatric diseases, such as impaired mobility, vision, hearing, cognition and memory. Here, we report on the effect and possible mechanisms of LWDH mediated protection of β-amyloid (Aβ) induced paralysis in Caenorhabditis elegans using ethanol extract (LWDH-EE) and water extract (LWDH-WE). Chemical profiling and quantitative analysis revealed the presence of different levels of bioactive components in these extracts. LWDH-WE was rich in polar components such as monosaccharide dimers and trimers, whereas LWDH-EE was enriched in terms of phenolic compounds such as gallic acid and paeonol. In vitro studies revealed higher DPPH radical scavenging activity for LWDH-EE as compared to that found for LWDH-WE. In this review, the researchers summarized the characteristics and associated mechanisms of naringin, the pharmacologically active compound of the Chinese herb Huajuhong (Exocarpium Citri grandis, ECG) in alleviating multiple respiratory diseases, and discussed its potential application in the prevention and treatment of coronavirus disease 2019.. Traditionality. The Chinese herb Huajuhong is the dried epicarp of ECG, an herb that originated from Huazhou town in the Guangdong province of South China. It was first documented in an ancient book of traditional Chinese medicine, Bencao Gangmu Shiyi (Supplement to Compendium of Materia Medica), which was written in 1765 C.E. It has been used as folk herbal medicine in the treatment of respiratory diseases for hundreds of years in China. ECG was included in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia since 1977 and was a primary ingredient in many famous traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions. ECG contains flavonoids, and naringin is the primary active ...
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used by Chinese patients and in many other countries worldwide. However, epidemiological reports and prescription patterns on children are few. A cohort of 178,617 children aged 18 and under from one million randomly sampled cases of the National Health Insurance Research Database was analyzed for TCM prescription patterns. SAS 9.1 was applied and descriptive medicine utilization patterns were presented. The cohort included 112,889 children treated by TCM, with adolescents (12- to 18-year-olds) as the largest group. In the childrens TCM outpatient visits, Chinese herbal remedies were the main treatment. The top three categories of diseases treated with Chinese herbal remedies were respiratory system; symptoms, signs, and ill-defined conditions; and digestive system. The top three categories using acupuncture were: injury and poisoning, diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue, and diseases of the respiratory system. Of the top ten herbal
Processing is a traditional pharmacy technology based on traditional Chinese medicine theory. The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) ingredients should be processed before being used as a medicine. Processed bitter almonds are widely used in the clinic in TCM for the treatment of cough and asthma. In this work the amygdalin profile of three producing areas in China was determined, with respect to three differently processed bitter almond products: raw, stir-fried and scalded. Identification of the compounds was done by using high performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS). Results indicated that amygdalin, neoamygdalin and amygdalin amide were identified in the different processed bitter almonds. Meanwhile, amygdalin was used as a standard to calculate the quantification of amygdalin and the concentration ratio of neoamygdalin and total amygdalin by HPLC-DAD. The data suggested that composition of amygdalin isomers in bitter almonds was

Highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) is the current HIV/AIDS treatment modality. Despite the fact that HAART is very effective in suppressing HIV-1 replication and reducing the mortality of HIV/AIDS patients, it has become increasingly clear that HAART does not offer an ultimate cure to HIV/AIDS. The high cost of the HAART regimen has impeded its delivery to over 90% of the HIV/AIDS population in the world. This reality has urgently called for the need to develop inexpensive alternative anti-HIV/AIDS therapy. This need has further manifested by recent clinical trial failures in anti-HIV-1 vaccines and microbicides. In the current study, we characterized a panel of extracts of traditional Chinese medicinal herbal plants for their activities against HIV-1 replication. Crude and fractionated extracts were prepared from various parts of nine traditional Chinese medicinal herbal plants in Hainan Island, China. These extracts were first screened for their anti-HIV activity and cytotoxicity in human

by Christopher Trahan, O.M.D., L.A.c.. In the summer of 1987 I traveled to the Peoples Republic of China, to study Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at Chengdu College of Chinese Medicine. Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province, in south-central china; it is the hometown of the Chinese doctor Michael Zeng, who is the director of the International Institute of Chinese Medicine, where I formerly taught, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Michael took nine of us to Chengdu, where for many years he practiced and taught Western medicine as well as TCM, to do an advanced clinical internship. In addition to giving an account of my experiences in Chengdu, I will discuss TCM and how modern-day China integrates its native healing system with Western medicine.. To give you an idea of my background: I work with acupuncture and herbal medicine, many with Chinese herbs though I also use American herbs (the latter according with Western and Chinese concepts of herbal medicine). I treat many kinds of ailments ...

Carcinogenesis is now considered as a result from a multitude of gene mutations [36], thus inhibition of a single gene product or cell signaling pathway is unlikely to prevent or treat cancer. The mechanisms vary considerably among various types of tumors. Alterations of different signaling pathways are involved in most of the pathological changes associated with these mechanisms. Many natural agents, in which TCM is included, have multi-targeting properties. We herein provide in vitro evidence that ZJW, a well-established TCM formula, has the potential for CRC intervention, which is accord to results obtained previously [6, 11]. It is a limitation not to perform cell vitality assay for ZJW in normal colorectal cells. However, the traditional Chinese herbal medicine ZJW has been used to treat gastrointestinal disorders for over 600 years in China. Nowadays, it is widely used in clinical medicine with proved security.. The present study showed that ZJW treatment, like that of 5-HTR1D antagonist, ...

Sinusitis is cause by inflammation of the mucous membranes in the sinuses, the air-filled spaces in the bones of the face. Sinus symptoms are a blocked-up nose, a nasal tone in the speech, and sometimes a headache over one or both eyes, usually worse in the mornings, when lying down or bending forwards. Normally mucus is channeled through the tiny air ducts to the nose, but during colds the ducts can become congested and when the mucus builds up, the sinuses become inflamed. Hay fever can also cause sinusitis, and allergy to dust or tobacco smoke can result in chronic cases. There can also be a greenish-yellow or bloody discharge from the nose.. Chinese Medicine sees the condition as mainly connected with a lung qi deficiency and with damp heat. A Chinese Medicine practitioner will prescribe peppermint, honeysuckle, fritillary bulb, tangerine peel and xanthium fruit are all helpful.. If you wish to enquire about purchasing Chinese Herbal Medicines to help this condition please email us at ...
Tonsillitis can be an extremely painful complaint, causing a very sore throat as the tonsils, which are situated at the back of the throat, become inflamed and swollen. The neck glands are also affected in many cases, and there may be a dry cough. Children get tonsillitis more often than adults, because it is often caused by a virus that they have not had time to develop resistance to. Tonsillitis can also be the result of bacteria.. Chinese Medicine will diagnose tonsillitis as due to wind and heat or, sometimes, to fire poison. Heat, poison and fire can be treated internally by a Chinese Medicine practitioner, for example with honeysuckle flowers drunk as tea. A salt-water gargle can also be used to sterilize locally. The diet can be modified - tonsillitis sufferers should not eat too much spicy food, as that will aggravate the problem. Three-sided acupuncture needles to prick the top of the ears can also be effective.. If you wish to enquire about purchasing Chinese Herbal Medicines to help ...
Natural News) Knee osteoarthritis is a degenerative, wear and tear type of arthritis that commonly occurs in older adults. It develops gradually and causes pain that worsens over time. Fortunately, researchers at Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine in China and Marche Polytechnic University in Italy found a natural way to manage this disease. They discovered that receiving electroacupuncture for four weeks can help reduce pain and improve physical function of people with knee osteoarthritis without causing serious side effects.. Electroacupuncture is a form of therapy wherein thin needles are inserted into the body at certain areas or acupoints. Based on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), stimulating different acupoints on the body could provide various health benefits. Unlike regular acupuncture, these thin needles are attached to a device that generates continuous electric pulses using small clips.. The researchers reached this conclusion after analyzing the data of randomized controlled ...

Abstract: The clinical efficacy and safety of acupuncture in the treatment of Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis (SAR) was evaluated by employing a two-phase crossover single-blind clinical trial. Thirty subjects were randomly assigned to two groups with 17 and 13 subjects respectively and treated with real or sham acupuncture (three times per week) for four consecutive weeks and then a crossover for treatments for a further four weeks without a washout period. The administration of real acupuncture treatment was guided by a syndrome differentiation according to Chinese Medicine Theory. Subjects were assessed by various criteria before, during and after the treatments. Outcome measures included subjective symptom scores using a five-point scale (FPS), relief medication scores (RMS) and adverse effect records. Twenty six (26) subjects completed the study. There was a significant improvement in FPS (nasal and non-nasal symptoms) between the two types of acupuncture treatments. No significant differences ...
Acupuncture and western medicine have the same goals-to eliminate disease and support the best quality of life. However, each approach is suited to specific circumstances. Western medicine is ideal for acute disease diagnostics and surgery. Acupuncture can be very effective in treating chronic conditions that western medicine can help but not cure. Traditional Chinese medicine, including acupuncture, focuses on the underlying cause of disease, not just the symptoms manifested in each individual patient.. Conventional western drugs act quickly but sometimes come with unwanted side effects. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal therapy can be used to avoid or ameliorate some of those side effects. By combining western and eastern medical knowledge, Dr. Barrack provides your pet with the most appropriate and best possible care.. ...

Tui Na is an ancient form of therapeutic massage consisting of many different hand techniques applied to the body. Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and philosophy, Tui Na views the body in a similar way to acupuncture. Using the hands as tools, a practitioner diagnoses and treats the patients disharmonies through his/her tactile senses.. Each Tui Na technique has a specific function and theory behind its use. Tui Na helps free the flow of the bodys qi and blood. By moving the qi and blood, pain is reduced. Tui Nas techniques also have a vibrational rhythm to them which carries throughout the entire body. It is believed that the rocking motions of the techniques help to relax the muscles of the body and calm the mind. (The concept is somewhat akin to rocking a baby to sleep.). Tui Na treats many, many problems associated with health. It has a rich history of practical use and application. There are countless Chinese texts that exhibit the benefits of Tui Na.. Tui Na is usually ...
To the best of our knowledge, this is the first large-scale study to report differences in the characteristics of children with atopic dermatitis who did and did not use TCM. TCM was more commonly used for older and female children, especially those with allergic rhinitis and multiple allergic diseases compared to the children who never used TCM. Although the age at onset of atopic dermatitis is usually around 5 years, the higher use of TCM among older children may reflect poor control of atopic dermatitis, in that the parents of the children are more willing to try TCM when they are older. Dissatisfaction with current western medical treatment may be the reason for the use of TCM in the older children, and this trend is similar to that reported in the general population [14, 21].. The children with more allergic diseases tended to use TCM therapy, especially when they had both atopic dermatitis and allergic rhinitis. This may also explain why the children living in more urbanized areas tended ...

We explored the effects of combination of acupuncture and Chinese medicinal herbs in treating model rats with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and to explore whether acupuncture has positive effects on the absorption of salvianolic acid B in the extracts of a Chinese medicine formula when treating the model rats. 60 female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into Groups A, B, C, D, E and F, with ten rats in each group. Except Group F, all of the other rats were induced to PCOS with oral administration of letrozole. The rats in Group F served as normal controls. Group A was treated with acupuncture. Group B was treated with oral administration of the extracts of the Chinese medicine formula. Group C was treated with a combination of oral administration of the extracts of Chinese medicine and acupuncture. Group D received western medicine as positive controls. After treatment, the serum levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone(LH) and testosterone (T) in each ...
Herbal medicine, one of the cornerstones of traditional Chinese medicine, has evolved over centuries of clinical practice and results in a vast body of knowledge encompassing more than 6,000 substances, most of whose effects and uses have been documented and researched.
Traces of therapeutic activities in China date from the Shang dynasty (14th-11th centuries BCE).[17] Though the Shang did not have a concept of medicine as distinct from other fields,[17] their oracular inscriptions on bones and tortoise shells refer to illnesses that affected the Shang royal family: eye disorders, toothaches, bloated abdomen, etc.,[17][18] which Shang elites usually attributed to curses sent by their ancestors.[17] There is no evidence that the Shang nobility used herbal remedies.[17] According to a 2006 overview, the Documentation of Chinese materia medica (CMM) dates back to around 1,100 BCE when only dozens of drugs were first described. By the end of the 16th century, the number of drugs documented had reached close to 1,900. And by the end of the last century, published records of CMM had reached 12,800 drugs.[19]. Stone and bone needles found in ancient tombs led Joseph Needham to speculate that acupuncture might have been carried out in the Shang dynasty.[20][21] ...
