Brevet US5465841 - Medical waste collection and treatment station - Google Brevets
A method and apparatus for the collection and treatment of contaminated medical waste, including solid and non-solid, potentially infectious materials, permits the collection of such medical waste at the point and at the time of its generation in a solid container. The contained medical waste can be subsequently transported for pulverization, disinfection and safe disposal. A separate portable processing chamber to treat medical waste, can be used at locations remote from its power unit for the collection of medical waste and then moved to the location of the power unit to drive the waste-treatment apparatus within the chamber. In addition, a medical waste collection station can provide single and multiple containers, which may be sequentially used, for the collection of medical waste and whose use may be combined with a processing chamber to treat collected medical waste before its disposal.

Viral hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver due to viral infections and there are groups of viruses that affects the liver of which hepatitis B and C viruses are the causative agents of sever form of liver disease with high rate of mortality. Medical waste handlers who undergo collection, transportation, and disposal of medical wastes in the health institutions are at risk of exposure to acquire those infections which transmit mainly as a result of contaminated blood and other body fluids including injury with sharp instruments, splash to the eye or mucous membrane. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of hepatitis B and/or C viruses and associated risk factors among medical waste handlers. A cross-sectional study was conducted from April, 2011 to June, 2011 in government health institutions at Gondar town. Socio-demographic and possible risk factors data from medical waste handlers were collected using pre-tested and well structured questionnaires. Venous bloods were collected and the

Modelling the Effects of Population Dynamics on Solid Waste Generation and Treatment :: Science Publishing Group
This paper presents a mathematical model of the effects of population dynamics on solid waste generation and treatment. The model is developed by grouping the population into three age classes and each group considered to have its own solid waste generation rate and natural death rate. The population is assumed to increase due to birth and migration. Both analytical and numerical results confirm that solid waste generation increases with increasing population growth. On the other hand, sensitivity analysis shows that increasing solid waste treatment effort results in significant decreases in solid waste accumulation suggesting that with concerted treatment effort solid waste free environment can be achieved.

Multi-site household waste generation forecasting using a deep learning approach. - Newsemia
Forecasting household waste generation using traditional methods is particularly challenging due to its high variability and uncertainty. Unlike studies that forecast waste generation at municipal or country levels, household data can present rapid short-term variations and highly non-linear dynamics. The aim of this paper is to investigate the advantages of using a state-of-the-art deep learning approach compared to traditional forecasting methods. We apply a multi-site Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) Neural Network, to forecast waste generation rates from households using a long-term data base. The model is applied to historical data of weekly waste weights from households in the municipality of Herning, Denmark, in the period between 2011 and 2018. Results show that using a multi-site approach, instead of an individual fit for each household, can improve forecasting performance of the LSTM model by 28% on average, and that the LSTM approaches can effectively improve the results by 85% on ...

Bio-medical wastes refer to wastes that are generated during the diagnosis, treatment or immunization of human beings or animals or in research activities pertaining or in the testing of biological specimens. Biological specimens includes any preparation made from organisms or micro-organisms or product of metabolism and biochemical reactions intended for use in the diagnosis, the treatment of human beings or animals or immunization or in research activities.. Waste generated by health care activities includes a variety of materials, from used needles and syringes to soiled dressings, body parts, diagnostic samples, blood, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and radioactive materials. Poor management of health care waste potentially exposes health care workers, waste handlers, patients and the community at large to infection, toxic effects and injuries, and risks polluting the environment. It is inevitable that all medical waste materials are segregated at the point of generation, ...
Healthcare Waste Composition and Generation Rate in Menellik II Referral Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: A Cross Sectional...
Healthcare facilities generate tremendous amount of infectious waste from healthcare activities. Despite the great potential for environmental hazards and public health risks of healthcare waste, its proper handling and management is significantly undermined in many developing countries where the actual amount of healthcare waste generated and its composition in Ethiopia is not well defined. Thus it is important to determine the existing generation rate in the hospital. Across-sectional study design was employed to assess the waste composition and determine generation rate in Menellik II hospital. A calibrated sensitive weight scale was used to quantify the generation rate of health care waste for seven days. Data was entered, arranged and analyzed using MS office excel sversion 2007and SPS Sversion 20. Correlation and regression analysis were computed to know the relationships between magnitude of waste generated and other variables. The results showed that the mean waste generation rate was found to

Methods and Systems for catalyzing the oxidative destruction of animal tissues, particularly medical waste and animal and human corpses. A reaction chamber containing a fluidizable media is maintained at a temperature sufficient to cause the fluidized media, typically silica sand, silica gel, or alumina, to become highly reactive in the presence of moisture. Typically the reaction chamber is maintained at a temperature in a range from about 400 C. to about 500 C. The methods and systems quickly and efficiently destroy medical waste and a variety of other animal tissues such as corpses. The apparatus can be small to fit into small rooms or large to serve institutional needs. It replaces incineration, autoclaving, plasma formation, and the like as the preferred method for effectively disinfecting and destroying medical wastes and corpses.
