TY - JOUR. T1 - The carpal bones. T2 - A basic test of medical students and junior doctors knowledge of anatomy. AU - Spielmann, P M. AU - Oliver, C W. PY - 2005/8. Y1 - 2005/8. N2 - With the changing emphasis of the modern medical school curriculum, many senior doctors and authors are commenting on a decline in anatomical knowledge of trainees. This study was conceived to provide a snapshot of medical students and junior doctors knowledge of anatomy. The carpal bones were chosen as a benchmark for anatomical knowledge as they are easily objectively examined and have clinical relevance to junior doctors in a number of disciplines. Twenty five fourth and final year medical students, fifteen pre-registration house officers (PRHOs) and ten senior house officers (SHOs) were recruited and the questionnaires were completed in the presence of one author. Of all participants recruited only fifteen could correctly name all eight carpal bones. Seven of these were SHOs in Surgery or Accident and ...

Within these limitations 81% of patients in our series undergoing urgent abdominal surgery were in pain at the time of giving consent to surgery. However, the majority (66%) perceived that this did not affect their ability to give informed consent. This is consistent with the findings of our previous study.3 This agreement between our two studies supports the impression that at least some patients with acute abdominal pain perceive that they retain the ability to give informed consent and is interesting, given that the two studies were separated by a time period of over 12 months and involved two distinct cohorts of junior hospital doctors.. Although 52 (70%) patients undergoing urgent surgery had received analgesia before signing consent only 14 (27%) reported an adverse effect of analgesia on the ability to give informed consent. This is perhaps fortunate as in only 57% of cases did the consent obtainer ascertain whether or not the patient had received analgesia prior to the informed consent ...

In without cause terminations, the notice period should be long enough to allow the physician to secure other employment. If the physician is permitted to initiate a without-cause termination, he or she should make sure the termination clause does not conflict with the non-compete clause.. Notice Period: Time needed for either party to end the contract.. Assignment: Can the contract be owned by someone else? This is usually not done in this type of agreement.. Patient Records: Who owns them and how are they handled. Contract should also address your access to patient records after employment ends.. Restrictive Covenants: Conditions, distance and timeframes. These non-compete clauses typically prevent a physician from working for a competitor located within a specific geographic area for a certain period of time. Non-compete clauses are illegal in some states, and theyre enforceable only if deemed reasonable in other states. Some employers have begun to use non-solicitation agreements. This ...

This qualitative exploration of junior doctors experiences of managing patients with MUS highlights a large gap in their knowledge about the topic and appropriate patient management, and emphasises the urgent need for improved postgraduate teaching for newly-qualified doctors.. Junior doctors described patients with unexplained symptoms as a challenging group of individuals who are often perceived as impossible to help, and some questioned the legitimacy of such patients demands on doctors time and resources. Similar attitudes towards patients with unexplained symptoms have been reported in other studies with GPs in primary care settings,14 ,23 ,24 and are thought to stand in the way of doctors ability to provide optimal care.25 ,26 Some of the negative views that junior doctors held towards patients with MUS appeared linked with their exposure to the dismissive attitudes of senior role models; findings similar to that of a recent study examining the attitudes of medical students.18 These ...
WEDNESDAY, March 10Skin transplant surgery successfully and safely treats vitiligo, a condition that causes white patches on the skin of about 1 in 200 people in the United States, doctors say.. Light therapy and skin medications are common treatments for the condition, which is most famously associated with singer Michael Jackson. But the treatments dont always work. In a new study, researchers at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit say they followed 23 patients for as long as six months after surgery, which involves transplanting skin cells from one part of the patient to another.. Patients regained an average of about 52 percent of their missing natural skin color in treated areas; eight patients with one specific type of vitiligo gained an average of 74 percent.. Patients of color and those with vitiligo on one side of the body and in one area of the body may benefit most from this procedure, study senior author Dr. Iltefat Hamzavi, a senior staff physician, said in a news release from the ...

Results Trainee doctors have spent an uneaven time in evaluating the two SIj (difference in absolute value=2.1sec (sd 1,7)): the left SIj was appointed less time for evaluation. Also, there is a certain preference in the order of evaluation: the majority of participants evaluated the right SIj first. By comparison, the difference in evaluation time of the SIj by the senior doctors was only 0,3sec (sd 1.2). The order of evaluation was also preferential for the right SIj.. In evaluating enthesitis, trainee doctors pay less attention to the SP and the FH in comparison to the senior doctors (% of medium time spent on SP=7.4% by a trainee doctor vs. 12.8% for senior doctors (p,0.05), and 16.2% for both FH for trainee vs. 21.5% for senior doctors).. No correlation between the stage of sacroiliitis and the time spent for evaluation of the SIj was found, regardless of the level of experience. ...

To our knowledge this is the first time and motion study that looks specifically at ED SHOs. We demonstrated that an average of 12% of coded daytime was spent by SHOs performing administrative and technical tasks, rising to 17% of coded time during a night shift.. Use of PAs in the UK is uncommon, however a trained PA could perform many of the administrative and technical tasks currently performed by SHOs. Establishing such a post in our department would release on average 78 minutes per 10 hour shift/SHO. This would allow the doctors to spend more time per shift performing their primary role. In less well resourced departments, this effect is likely to be magnified. Indeed, pilot studies from two UK district general hospital EDs suggest that an average of 25% of doctors time is spent performing uncomplicated administrative and technical tasks (J Mitchell, personal communication).. This study used direct real time observation by trained observers rather than other less reliable methods such as ...

From a news release published by the Association of American Medical Colleges, February 16, 2012. Starting in 2015, when aspiring doctors take the MCAT® examination, they will need more than a solid basis in the natural sciences. Under changes approved today by the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges), they also will need an understanding of the psychology, sociology, and biology that provide the foundation for learning about the human and social components of health.. The changes to the MCAT exam, the first since 1991, are designed to help students prepare for a rapidly changing health care system and an evolving body of medical knowledge while addressing the needs of a growing, aging, and increasingly diverse population.. Being a good doctor is about more than scientific knowledge. It also requires an understanding of people. By balancing the MCAT exams focus on the natural sciences with a new section on the psychological, social, and biological foundations of behavior, the new ...

Introduction and Objectives BTS guidelines suggest the diagnostic test for pneumonia (in hospital) is a CXR. Since management should be commenced within 4 h of arrival the initial interpretation of the CXR is most often performed by junior doctors. Consultants review patients and their CXRs within 24 h of admission and a radiologists report is issued at a later time point but diagnosis dependent decisions-whether to admit, risk stratification and whether to give antibiotics-fall to junior doctors. We measured the inter-observer agreement within groups of doctors involved at key points in CAP diagnosis and management. Methods 24 admission CXRs from patients attending a large teaching hospital between February and April 2011 with a suspected diagnosis of CAP were collected on a radiology computer workstation. The traditional practice of imparting training of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) at medical colleges in Pakistan has been through apprenticeships. Junior doctors are placed with seniors to provide them on-the-job training, says Dr Naeem Zia, Professor of Surgery at Rawalpindi Medical College (RMC).. Apprentices are first made to observe seniors perform surgeries. After some time, they start assisting seniors. Finally, they start carrying out surgeries by themselves under the supervision of a senior doctor, he says.. However, nowadays junior doctors can also be trained with the help of surgical simulators which have the capability of assessing their skills and providing feedback on potential areas of improvement.. Teaching hospitals around the world are using training simulators like LapSim, LapMentor and ProMIS but the use of these devices is expensive as their license can cost up to $50,000, says Dr Osman Hasan, an Assistant Professor at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer ...
A senior doctor has urged parents to avoid using over-the-counter cough syrups and medicines to treat coughs and colds in children - in favour of old-fashioned honey and lemon.. Dr Oliver Bevington, a senior registrar in paediatrics at Southampton Childrens Hospital, warned they often contained ingredients that could have adverse effects or be toxic if consumed in large doses.. He also said many included paracetamol which could lead to parents unintentionally overdosing their children and there was absolutely no evidence cough medicines worked and warned they could actually do more harm than good.. He said: We are now heading into our busiest time of the year where hospitals and GPs will see hundreds of children a day with respiratory symptoms including coughing, colds and temperatures.. Most coughs and colds in children will be caused by a viral infection which will get better without antibiotics and with rest, fluids and possibly paracetamol and/or ibuprofen, though many parents worry ...
Biosketch. Dr. Harvey Alter earned his medical degree at the University of Rochester Medical School, and trained in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital and at the University Hospitals of Seattle. In 1961, he came to the National Institutes of Health as a clinical associate. He then spent several years with Georgetown University, returning to NIH in 1969 to join the Clinical Centers Department of Transfusion Medicine as a senior investigator becoming Chief of the Infectious Diseases Section and Associate Director of Research in the Department of Transfusion Medicine at the NIH Clinical Center.. Dr. Alter co-discovered the Australia antigen, a key to detecting hepatitis B virus. Later, Dr. Alter spearheaded a project at the Clinical Center that created a storehouse of blood samples used to uncover the causes and reduce the risk of transfusion-associated hepatitis. He was principal investigator on studies that identified non-A, non-B hepatitis, now called hepatitis C. His work was ...
It is appropriate to place John Crammers academic and research career in the setting of his manifold job experiences. Using his own words, he began as a research biochemist and went on to become a medical student, a popular science journalist, a medical correspondent for the Guardian and RAF medical officer, and spent a period as an idler on the French Riviera when he decided to retire while young enough to enjoy it and to work later. It was after a spell on the editorial staff of the BMJ that he obtained a senior house officer post at the Maudsley in 1954 at the age of 33, where he stayed for only 1 year.. His peripatetic career continued with a stint as an asylum medical officer (his term for a mental hospital consultant) and it was not until 1971 that he returned to the Maudsley as senior lecturer and consultant psychiatrist. Not content with this he stood for election to the Editorship of the British Journal of Psychiatry, a position he held from 1977 to 1983. He admitted that after his ...

JWCH Institute Inc. is a private non-profit health agency that was established as the Attending Staff Association of the John Wesley County Hospital in 1960 by concerned L.A. County physicians. These staff physicians sought to establish an agency that could obtain additional funds to support and augment patient care, education, and research at the John Wesley facility. When the hospital was demolished in 1979, the agency continued its efforts to assist LA County patients, but the name was no longer relevant and was subsequently changed to JWCH Institute Inc.. Prior to 1979, medical research and education at county facilities were the paramount functions of the agency. However, after 1979, medical services and patient education took priority with a focus on community-based health education and social support programs.. The agencys current mission is to improve the health and wellness of under-served segments of the population of Los Angeles County through the direct provision or coordination of ...

Olmsteds anecdotal evidence is cited ad nauseum as evidence that thimerosal causes autism. The case rests on twin assumptions: that the Amish dont vaccinate, and that they dont have autism. But Olmsted never visited the cryptically-named Clinic for Special Children in Strasburg, where doctors treat of children who exhibit autistic behavior. Its not even necessary to visit the clinic. A simple phone call to a staff physician, such as the one I made recently, is enough to debunk the Amish anomaly, as Olmsted calls it ...
I cannot be more explicit than this: if we come into contact with someone who is positive for COVID-19, all KCDPC staff & physicians who made contact with that individual will have to quarantine for 14 days. As were small, this may lead to a situation where we will have to close for all in-person interactions, prescription pickups, etc. for up to (and potentially longer than) a 14-day period. If this were to occur, we would attempt to still offer telephone triage and telemedicine visits. There isnt any safe way around this. Again, were putting these guidelines in place to prevent the spread of this illness to the most vulnerable around us. We so appreciate your understanding, patience, and effort to keep everyone in the KCDPC family healthy as we all see our routines upended a bit by this virus.. Dont hesitate to ask questions or reach out.. Allison Edwards, MD & the KCDPC Team. _________________________________________. If you think your child might have sepsis you should seek medical advice straight away. If your GP thinks your child is showing early symptoms they will refer them to hospital for diagnosis and treatment. Of course, if you are concerned that your child is very ill already, then dont hesitate to take them to hospital straight away, as severe sepsis or septic shock is a medical emergency and needs to be dealt with quickly.. In fact, recent guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence says that anyone at risk of sepsis should be seen by senior hospital staff and given antibiotics and fluids within an hour.. This guidance comes after an inquiry in 2015 found that 40% of patients with sepsis who arrived in Accident & Emergency had not been reviewed by senior doctors quickly enough.. Hopefully, this article has gone some way to helping you understand the dangers of sepsis.. However, nothing could be more powerful than this video from Melissa Mead, whose son William sadly died ...
The researchers wanted to examine whether critical care staff experienced adverse mental health in a similar way to frontline healthcare workers, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.. The team recruited 515 healthcare workers working in ICUs in May 2020. They covered a range of roles such as nurses, junior and senior doctors, healthcare assistants and physiotherapists. Participants were from the UK (73), France (309), Italy (31), Taiwan (29), Belgium (2), Egypt (3) and China (68). They were recruited by word of mouth, emails and social media platforms.. Using a detailed questionnaire, the team asked participants questions on their wellbeing and anxieties. They then scored their responses using three different grading systems used in clinical settings to identify depression, PTSD and insomnia. The team found that across the various countries explored, 37 percent of respondents exceeded the threshold for signs of depression, 78 for insomnia and 28 percent for PTSD.. The team also identified ...

Downloadable! In general, retirement is seen as a pure labor supply phenomenon, but firms can have strong incentives to send expensive older workers into retirement. Based on the seniority wage model developed by Lazear (1979), we discuss steep seniority wage profiles as incentives for firms to dismiss older workers before retirement. Conditional on individual retirement incentives, e.g., social security wealth or health status, the steepness of the wage profile will have different incentives for workers as compared to firms when it comes to the retirement date. Using an instrumental variable approach to account for selection of workers in our firms and for reverse causality, we find that firms with higher labor costs for older workers are associated with lower job exit age.
When we asked Swedish patients in qualitative interviews what AHC meant to them, both female and male patients expressed feelings of being disempowered and devalued. The core category in the female sample was a feeling of being nullified and in the male sample mentally pinioned.15 ,16 However, when staff was asked the same question (in the preintervention study), the answers were quite different. They explained theoretically what AHC could be, for example, transgression of ethical principles, but they were also occupied with explanations and justifications as to why AHC occurred, and the core category was ethical lapses. In accordance with their ambiguity and inability to handle AHC, it was treated with silence and as a taboo.17 Moreover, staffs awareness of AHC was dependent on their possibilities to act; low awareness was seen when there were few possibilities to act.18. High prevalence of AHC, creating long-lasting suffering among patients and little awareness about the problem among ...

GL: What is the biggest challenge facing companys trying to recruit able marketers?. SS: It would be hard for me to identify one challenge when there are multiple, which in every one of my cases, are directly or indirectly related to marketing technology. Senior marketing leaders are facing increasing pressure from leadership to make the most of technology investments - to achieve company-wide objectives that the technology was promised to deliver. Coupled with this, senior marketers are uncertain of skills needed. And, believe it or not, some hiring managers are finding frustration hiring and retaining junior staff to perform in less technical marketing roles, because new entrants are rushing to acquire technology cred to their resumes. GL: Why are marketers struggling so much to embrace technology tools? SS: There are a combination of factors, most of which I believe are intimidation, complexity and cost. Given these, its often easier to ignore the issue, or take baby steps, as Ive heard it ...
I am fairly new to the University of Sydney and have not yet established a routine here. But a typical day for me usually includes a combination of some of the following: Reviewing colleagues work, supervising/mentoring more junior staff, brainstorming project ideas, team, project and committee meetings, external reviews (for journals, conferences, grants), collecting and analysing data, preparing and giving presentations, writing grants, writing papers, reading papers, cuddling my cat (oh and my husband), eating, drinking (especially tea) and swimming (on some days of the week).. But it is very dependent on the time of year and on any impending deadlines. For example, over the past 2 days I have done nothing else but a heuristic analysis of an oncology electronic medical record (i.e. walked through the system to identify usability problems).. Some of the larger projects I am working on include an NHMRC Partnership project (with partners eHealth NSW and eHealth QLD) which aims to evaluate and ...
Talk about hard lessons learned early! I know of a young driver who was almost done with the first portion of her drivers education course. She passed a written test and was just a few miles shy of completing her supervised time behind the wheel.. Little did she know that a deer, oblivious to the laws of physics and the weight of a mid-sized sedan, would try to dodge the vehicle she was driving. Try is the operative word. Put else wise, in the closing moments of her education, she got into a car/deer accident.. With the many hazards in the strange world corrections, it pays to be cautious. Season corrections veterans are not exempted from making errors. Still, it behooves us to watch the progress of junior staff and to help them as we can. Part of that is recognizing their missteps. Informing rookies of their mistakes may help our new colleagues avoid future occurrences. Here are five classic examples:. Over friendly -people can overdo it on being jovial in the corrections setting. Whether this ...
