A practical approach for incorporating dependence among fields in probabilistic record linkage | BMC Medical Informatics and...
Methods for linking real-world healthcare data often use a latent class model, where the latent, or unknown, class is the true match status of candidate record-pairs. This commonly used model assumes that agreement patterns among multiple fields within a latent class are independent. When this assumption is violated, various approaches, including the most commonly proposed loglinear models, have been suggested to account for conditional dependence. We present a step-by-step guide to identify important dependencies between fields through a correlation residual plot and demonstrate how they can be incorporated into loglinear models for record linkage. This method is applied to healthcare data from the patient registry for a large county health department. Our method could be readily implemented using standard software (with code supplied) to produce an overall better model fit as measured by BIC and deviance. Finding the most parsimonious model is known to reduce bias in parameter estimates. This novel
Is chronic pain associated with subsequent cancer? A cohort record linkage study<...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Is chronic pain associated with subsequent cancer?. T2 - A cohort record linkage study. AU - Elliott, Alison M. AU - Torrance, Nicola. AU - Smith, Blair H. AU - Lee, Amanda J. PY - 2010/9. Y1 - 2010/9. N2 - A previous study has reported that chronic pain is associated with a higher incidence of overall and site-specific cancer in subsequent years. The aim of this study was to confirm or refute these findings. In 1996, a cohort of 6940 individuals was recruited, and information on chronic pain, general health and socio-demographic details collected. Ten years later, a record linkage study was conducted between these data and the routinely collected national dataset for cancer registration. Hazard ratios for the incidence of all cancers and eight cancer-specific sites by chronic pain status were calculated. Eighty-four percent of individuals from the original cohort were linked. After excluding those with a known previous cancer diagnosis, all non-melanoma skin cancers and cancers ...
Trends in hospital admission rates for whooping cough in England across five decades: database studies - Surrey Research...
Objectives Our aim was to report on trends in hospitalisation rates for pertussis in England from the 1960s to 2011; and to provide context for the recent unexpected activity of Bordetella pertussis in the UK. Design A retrospective analysis of English national Hospital Episode Statistics (HES, 1968-2011) and the Oxford Record Linkage Study (ORLS, 1963-2011) for people admitted to hospital with whooping cough. Setting England and the Oxford Record Linkage Study area. Main outcome measures Age- and gender-specific hospital admission rates, and summary age- and sex-standardised rates, for people aged under 25 years per 100,000 population in each age group. Results Admission rates declined from the 1960s to the early 1970s. For example, the standardised rates were 12.8 (95% confidence interval 11.2-14.5) per 100,000 in England in 1968 and 4.0 (3.0-4.9) per 100,000 in 1973. They then increased to reach 45.0 (41.4-48.6) per 100,000 in 1978 and 47.4 (43.7-51.1) in 1982. From the late 1980s, admission ...
Records Linkage of Electronic Databases for the Assessment of Adverse Effects of Antiretroviral Therapy in Sub-Saharan Africa |...
Purpose: In 2009, the Ministry of Health and Social Services in Namibia decided to conduct a confirmatory assessment of the risk of anemia associated with zidovudine (AZT)-based highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) using records contained in three electronic databases. These records did not share a unique identifying number. The first step was to apply probabilistic record linkage methods to link records in the three databases.. Methods: Records of persons, aged 19-65 years, newly initiated on HAART between January 2007 and June 2008, were selected from a pharmacy electronic dispensing tool (EDT) and linked to an electronic medical records database (ePMS) and a laboratory database (MEDITECH). Using the paper-based clinical record as the gold standard, we measured the sensitivity of the starting HAART regimen, that is, the proportion of AZT users in the clinical record correctly identified in the electronic record, and specificity of severe anemia, that is, proportion of non-cases of ...
Associations between selected immune-mediated diseases and tuberculosis: record-linkage studies. - CAMS Oxford Institute
BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that there may be an association between some immune-mediated diseases and risk of tuberculosis (TB). METHODS: We analyzed a database of linked statistical records of hospital admissions and death certificates for the whole of England (1999 to 2011), and a similar database (the Oxford Record Linkage Study (ORLS)) for a region of southern England in an earlier period. Rate ratios for TB were determined, comparing immune-mediated disease cohorts with comparison cohorts. RESULTS: In the all-England dataset, there were significantly elevated risks of TB after hospital admission for the following individual immune-mediated diseases: Addisons disease, ankylosing spondylitis, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, chronic active hepatitis, coeliac disease, Crohns disease, dermatomyositis, Goodpastures syndrome, Hashimotos thyroiditis, idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP), myasthenia gravis, myxedema, pemphigoid, pernicious anemia, polyarteritis nodosa, polymyositis,

Uveal melanoma in England: Trends over time and geographical variation - Nuffield Department of Population Health
Aims: Uveal melanoma is the commonest primary intraocular malignancy in adults, and leads to death in approximately half of patients. The Aim: was to report on trends over time and geographical variation in rates of uveal melanoma in England. Method:s Analysis of admissions for uveal melanoma, using linked English national hospital episode statistics, available from 1999 to 2010, and the Oxford record linkage study (ORLS), before that, from 1979 to 1998. Results: The annual rate of people admitted in England with a new record of uveal melanoma remained stable at approximately 1.0 people per 100 000 population from 1999 to 2010. Annual ORLS incidence rates were also stable from 1979 to 1998. Proportions of new uveal malignancies in adults for 2006-10 were 88% (382 people/year) choroidal and 12% (52) ciliary body/iris. Incidence rates increased with increasing age and were higher in men than women. Geographical analysis showed variation across local authorities (LA) in incidence rates, from 0.1 to 1.9
Determinants of risk and resilience in multi-agency administrative records: A population record-linkage study. - NeuRA
This project uses the framework of the NSW Child Development Study to determine key risk indicators of child maltreatment using information in linked records from multiple government agencies (e.g., NSW Health, Family and Community Services, Justice Health, and Education). Results will be translated into policy recommendations for refinement of the decision-making systems used by these government services, to ensure the earliest allocation of child protection resources to those most in need.. This project leverages population data from the NSW Child Development Study, a longitudinal study of a state-wide population of children (N=~87,000) and their parents for whom successive waves of record linkage across multiple government departments is combined with information from teacher- and child-reported cross-sectional surveys completed at ages 5 and 11 years respectively.. This project has received funding from the Australian Rotary Health Fund (2017-18). Current Staff: Postdoctoral Fellow ...
OP07 Adjusting survey-based estimates of alcohol consumption in Scotland for non-response bias: record-linkage study | Journal...
Methods Of the 54% of individuals who responded to the survey, 91% consented to record linkage of their responses to routine data; this study used data on alcohol-related harms (hospital admission or mortality) to the end of 2011. Contemporaneous census information and (unlinked) admission/mortality data on the general population were also available. We compared directly age-standardised survey-weighted estimates of alcohol-related harm rates in the 2353 male and 3028 female participants aged 20-65 years at interview with rates for the whole population. These differences and inferred characteristics of those missing from the survey were used to derive probabilities of alcohol-related harm in non-responders by age, sex, area deprivation and health board region. Observations were simulated for non-responders with corresponding alcohol-related harm probabilities and their unknown alcohol consumption estimates were multiply-imputed. Corrected results were obtained from the proxy representative ...
STD Rates Reach All Time High in Santa Barbara County | The Bottom Line
Alyssa Smith. California is number one in STDs, according to a recent study by the Center for Disease Control, California has more reported cases of gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis than any other state.. In Santa Barbara County, STD rates are also at an all time high, according to the County of Santa Barbaras Public Health Department. In a report totaling data from 2011 to 2015, rates of the same three diseases rose steadily each year. However, Santa Barbara County has less per-capita reported STDs than the rest of the state.. College campuses often have a less than flattering reputation for the presence of unsafe sex and diseases that can accompany it. Santa Barbara has two large campuses (SBCC and UCSB), yet compared to California as a whole, the county has lower rates of reported STDs.. Trends for increasing and decreasing cases of certain diseases in Santa Barbara County mirror the statewide trends. Preliminary data from 2016 suggests that trends for rising numbers of STD cases have ...

Cigarette smoking and tooth loss experience among young adults: a national record linkage study | BMC Public Health | Full Text
Databases of the National Nutrition Survey (NNS) and the Survey of Dental Diseases (SDD) from 1999 were obtained from the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare with permission for analytical use. The SDD, which involved the same sample population as that of the NNS, is conducted every six years. Data were collected from persons aged 1 year or older from approximately 5000 households in 300 districts. The background and general procedure of the surveys were described previously [11].. Smoking status was defined in the questionnaires of the NNS as: current smoker, an individual who currently smokes cigarettes daily or occasionally; former smoker, an individual who has smoked cigarettes at some point in their life, but who currently does not smoke; non-smoker, an individual who was an experimental smoker or who has never smoked cigarettes. Current smokers were asked about cigarette consumption in terms of the number of cigarettes per day and duration of smoking.. In the SDD, calibrated ...

Cancer in the offspring of radiation workers: a record linkage study | The BMJ
The report of an excess of leukaemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma among young people born (and diagnosed) in west Cumbria whose fathers had relatively high radiation exposures before their conception (paternal preconception irradiation)1 2 had a major impact. The causal interpretation suggested for this unexpected finding is referred to here as the Gardner hypothesis. Our analyses to test this hypothesis necessarily exclude the Gardner cases. We found an increased risk of childhood leukaemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma among the children of radiation workers, but our most important finding is that this risk was not related to dose; indeed, the association was greatest for children of workers with doses below the level of detection. Furthermore, we did not find a significantly increased risk in the highest dose category for any of the periods considered: for a cumulative preconception dose of 100 mSv and over, we found a relative risk of 0.46 (0.01 to 5.17) in contrast with 8.59 (1.41 to 52.20) reported ...

Ascent of Santa Barbara Peak in 1970-07 - Peakbagger.com
The first time that I hiked Truchas Peak was in 1970. I was in Boy Scout troop 166, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I was 15 years old. There were about 12 boys and a couple of adult leaders. The adults dropped us off at Santa Barbara campground, then we hiked up the east fork of the Santa Barbara River to the end of the box canyon and the headwaters. The first night we spent about half way up the valley, in a large open area, near the location where the middle fork trail meets. The second night we stayed in forest, at the edge of beautiful meadows and little lakes at the headwaters of the East Santa Barbara River. The morning of the third day we had a tough hike up to Santa Barbara peak and Skyline Ridge. Hiking Skyline Ridge was one of the most beautiful hikes that I could imagine, all above the timberline with beautiful views in every direction. The third night we set up camp at Truchas Lake and we hiked up to Truchas Peak later that day. We had to scramble on all fours to get to the top. We ...

Record linkage - Wikipedia
The most simple deterministic record linkage strategy would be to pick a single identifier that is assumed to be uniquely identifying, say SSN, and declare that records sharing the same value identify the same person while records not sharing the same value identify different people. In this example, deterministic linkage based on SSN would create entities based on A1 and A2; A3 and B1; and A4. While A1, A2, and B2 appear to represent the same entity, B2 would not be included into the match because it is missing a value for SSN. Handling exceptions such as missing identifiers involves the creation of additional record linkage rules. One such rule in the case of missing SSN might be to compare name, date of birth, sex, and ZIP code with other records in hopes of finding a match. In the above example, this rule would still not match A1/A2 with B2 because the names are still slightly different: standardization put the names into the proper (Surname, Given name) format but could not discern Bill ...
Santa Barbara Mission - Information, pictures, tours
Fiesta: Chumash Indians (1mb). The History of Mission Santa Barbara. Mission Santa Barbara was the tenth of the California missions to be founded by the Spanish Franciscans. It was established on the Feast of St. Barbara, Dec 4, 1786. Padre Junipero Serra, who founded the first nine missions, had died 2 years earlier. Serra had planned to build this mission, raising the cross at the presidio of Santa Barbara in 1782. It was Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen, his successor, who raised the cross here and placed Padre Antonio Paterna, a companion of Serra, in charge. Paterna put up the first buildings and made the first converts. The original buildings were of adobe and unpretentious. As the years passed, there was progress and development. There were three adobe churches here, each larger than the other, before the present church. The third was destroyed by earthquake in 1812. Thereafter the present church was planned. It was finished and dedicated in 1820. The present friary residence was built ...
Linkage validation study :: SLS - Scottish Longitudinal Study Development & Support Unit
The Ethnicity and Health Study, led by the University of Edinburgh, involves the creation of a database combining information from the 2001 Census and administrative health records in order to study differences by ethnic background in 4 areas of health outcomes: coronary heart disease, cancer, maternity and child health, and mental health. The study uses probability record linkage methods to link Census records to the Community Health Index (CHI), which is a database of everyone registered with a GP or in receipt of screening services in Scotland.. The SLS database uses the NHS Central Register (NHSCR) as a tracing tool to build longitudinal records for its sample members. This involves a record linkage between Census records and the NHSCR by means of automated deterministic matching and clerical methods which may in addition use information about other household members or vital events registrations. The NHSCR serves as a reference dataset for the CHI and a one-to-one link between the two ...

Results: Only people with PD showed a significant difference in the overall incidence of cancer compared to controls (rate ratio (RR) 0.76, 95 % confidence intervals 0.70-0.82 before PD; RR 0.61, 0.53-0.70, after PD). Rate ratios were close to one for cancer in patients after MND (0.98, 0.75-1.26) and after MS (0.96, 0.83-1.09). There were high rate ratios for malignant brain cancer (RR 7.4, 2.4-17.5) and Hodgkins lymphoma (5.3, 1.1-15.6) in patients diagnosed with MND after cancer. In people with MS, malignant brain cancer also showed an increased rate ratio both before hospital admission with a diagnosis of MS (RR 3.2, 1.1-7.6) and after (RR 2.4, 1.2-4.5). In people with PD, several specific cancers ...

Resilience does matter: evidence from a 10-year cohort record linkage study | BMJ Open
This is the first study to examine the long-term effects of resilience or vulnerability to chronic pain in terms of survival and hospital use. We found that resilience to chronic pain (as defined by low disability in spite of high-intensity pain) was associated with a significantly reduced risk of death over the subsequent 10 years. With the exception of pain services, resilient individuals made the same use of specialist services as the non-resilient comparator group. We also found that individuals classified as vulnerable to their chronic pain had poorer survival than those in the non-vulnerable comparison group. The few differences between vulnerable and non-vulnerable individuals in their use of hospital services were related mainly to psychiatric and anaesthetic services.. A major strength of our study was its community base. Results from this study are more likely to be representative of people living in the community than those from studies using samples from healthcare settings, such as ...

Santa Barbara Education Foundation highlights literacy at 2018 HOPE Awards - Santa Barbara Education Foundation
The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places youll go. Words of wisdom by Dr. Seuss! Every year, Santa Barbara Education Foundations HOPE Awards honors our local heroes of public education. This year SBEF shines its light on individuals and programs making strides for literacy. Identifying literacy as a top priority, Santa Barbara Unified launched a pilot program this school year to remediate students who display characteristics of dyslexia. The pilot program served 28 students at Harding Elementary in first through third grade.. In the past, many of these students have struggled to learn how to read and have received little or ineffective reading intervention. Private reading intervention can cost tens of thousands of dollars and is simply out of reach for many low and middle-income families. This program gives equal opportunity to all families and students that display characteristics of dyslexia and creates equity. It aligns with Santa Barbara ...

Laparoscopy of Adhesiolysis
In the first epidemiologic study of its kind, investigators in the Surgical and Clinical Adhesions Research (SCAR) study have shown that postoperative adhesions are directly related to a substantial number of hospital readmissions and result in a high rate of complications with potentially significant long-term consequences. Reporting in a recent issue of the Lancet, Ellis and associates urge that greater emphasis be placed on identifying surgical procedures with a high risk of adhesion-related complications and on assessing proposed adhesion prevention strategies.. Using the Scottish National Health Service medical record linkage database, the SCAR investigators identified 29,790 patients who underwent open abdominal or pelvic surgery in 1986 and had not had similar surgery in the previous 5 years. Over 10 years follow-up, one in three (34.6%) of these patients was readmitted because of a disorder directly or possibly related to adhesions or for abdominal or pelvic surgery that could ...

Santa Barbara reactivates seawater desalination plant | 89.3 KPCC
Santa Barbara has completed a $71 million reactivation of its seawater desalination plant to bolster its water supplies.. The city is in a section of California northwest of Los Angeles that received far less precipitation than parts of the state where an extremely rainy and snowy winter brought relief after years of drought.. IDE Technologies, the company hired to revive the facility, said Wednesday that the plant will produce nearly 3 million gallons a day to meet 30 percent of the citys demand.. Santa Barbara built the plant for emergency supplies after a 1980s water crisis, but it only operated for a few months in 1992 because of abundant rainfall.. In July 2015, the City Council voted to reactivate the plant as the most recent drought lengthened and extensive water conservation measures were put in place.. A stretch of territory spanning southern Santa Barbara County, neighboring Ventura County and northern Los Angeles County ended 2016 still in the exceptional drought category and only ...
SBBG Publications & Reports | The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden
The Santa Barbara Botanic Gardens support for research extends back into the 1940s. Early publications on the Trees of Santa Barbara (Van Rensselaer), as well as plant chromosomal structure (Walters) and plant anatomy (Moseley), contributed to the public appreciation of plants around us and to the scientific understanding of plant function. During the 1950s and 1960s the Garden provided facilities and field support for the fledgling campus that would grow into the University of California at Santa Barbara.
Rogers Grapevine: Discovering some sweet whites in Santa Barbara
The hype over the movie Sideways has abated a bit but Santa Barbara still remains a consummate tourist destination, sometimes stopping just short of kitchsy. However, even in the highly tourist oriented village of Solvang, there is always abundant things worth exploring and fun to be had. Our entourage, armed with a quick breakfast that included the requisite (and delicious) homemade Danish pastry headed out to explore shopping and wine tasting in a community that offers both in abundance. We made an obligatory stop in one of the great Christmas shops that operates here year around. (Mrs. Wine Guy decorates five trees every holiday season and is always on the lookout for something new!). With well over 100 wineries now listed as members of the Santa Barbara Vintners Association and nearly two dozen wine bars and tasting rooms in the tiny village of Solvang alone, theres much to choose from. Santa Barbara wines are far from limited to the Pinot Noir made famous by the movie. In fact, the ...

We used eight independent data sources to maximise complete ascertainment of cases of diabetes.. Diabetes prescriptions database generated by the Medicines Monitoring Unit-This unit, which is a university based organisation supported by the Medicines Control Agency, has been described in detail elsewhere.8 9 Briefly, it has devised a method of capturing person specific dispensing for the whole of Tayside and, since January 1993, has recorded over 10 million prescription items specified by community health number. Of these items, we identified all prescriptions for antidiabetic drugs (insulin, sulphonylureas, biguanides, and α-glucosidase inhibitors) and for diagnostic and monitoring devices for diabetes (such as test strips and meters).. Hospital diabetes clinics-We integrated four databases: those of diabetes clinics from Ninewells Hospital, Dundee; Stracathro Hospital, Brechin; and Perth Royal Infirmary as well that of a young adult and paediatric clinic at Ninewells Hospital. These sources ...

Bioinformatic tools - RD-Connect
Patient Archive (PA) translates deep clinical phenotyping and genome-scale biology to patient-centered human disease pathogenesis. The detailed phenotype profile created in PA, combined with data helps identify the causes of the disease, and make clear diagnosis and prognosis. Unlike other platforms, PA creates a patient clinical phenotype profile by automatic extraction of Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) concepts from free text clinical records or the labels of uploaded images. The HPO terms are then used for patient matchmaking, disorder prediction or gene list generation. Clinical data exchange is protected with secure access control and fully integrated into the GA4GH MatchMaker Exchange. Program. Patient Archive helps to harmonize phenomic information for translational and clinical use. PA was developed as part of the Monarch Initiative ...
