Surprisingly, in some countries, even administrative staff is involved in venous blood sampling, with little if any education about the procedure and how it can affect the quality of the sample and patient results. Moreover, while guidelines for venous blood sampling are available (CLSI H3-A6), it has been shown that those guidelines are neither implemented worldwide, nor complied with adequately. Such low level of compliance clearly puts patients at risk. Any deviation from the recommended procedure can affect either the quality of the sample or patient well-being. ...

For the past few decades, medical laboratory technology has been characterized by rapid and dramatic innovation, including the development of new tests and advances in equipment and testing techniques. Information technology has revolutionized data transfer by decreasing the time it takes to order and receive test results and by creating opportunities for research using Big Data sets. These new technologies are having a profound impact on the medical laboratory workforce[i]. Yet, despite these exciting developments, the profession continues to fall short as a career choice, leading to the current workforce shortage.. The Scope of the Labor Shortage. The BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) reports that employment of medical laboratory technologists and technicians is expected to grow by 13%, from 330,600 in 2010 to 373,500 in 2020[ii]. This translates into about 11,300 laboratory technologist/technician job openings annually through 2018 (including 7,000 through attrition as well as 4,300 new ...

Health care occupies a distinct niche in an economy struggling to recover from recession. Professions related to the care of patients are thought to be relatively resistant to downturns, and thus become attractive to students typically drawn to more lucrative pursuits. Currently, a higher profile for clinical laboratory technology among college students and those considering career change results in larger and better prepared applicant pools. However, after decades of contraction marked by closing of programs, prospective students encounter an educational system without the capacity or vigor to meet their needs. Here discussed are some principles and proposals to allow universities, partnering with health-care providers, government agencies, and other stake-holders to develop new programs, or reenergize existing ones to serve our students and patients. Principles include academic rigor in biomedical and clinical science, multiple points of entry for students, flexibility in format, cost effectiveness,

The quality of and degree to which medical laboratory professionals (MLP) impact patients health decisions by performing laboratory tests, supporting the use of point-of-care devices and strengthening clinical conversations with evidence-based information, counts on you to help change the HHR shortage.. The government is not leading an initiative to help supplement the national HHR shortage for MLTs. Without a national effort to change our professions situation, MLPs will experience greater hardship in the workplace. Other health professionals, who are not qualified in medical laboratory science, will need to overtake some of our responsibilities (task shifting) in order to provide the best patient care possible. Alternatively, our patients will see a decline in laboratory testing services, with potentially negative impact on their health.. The public and CSMLS have strong expectations of the testing produced by Canadas health care workforce. We believe MLPs are integral to this process and ...

Time management can be difficult in microbiology. There is so much going on, and so much to know. It can be easy to get lost in time warps and suddenly find that yet another Christmas is not far away! I wouldnt say I am the best in the world at time management, nor do I always practice what I preach, but here are a few things I try to adhere to in order to free up a bit of time for myself. I am essentially quite a lazy person, so I put in a fair bit of time facilitating this personality trait!. Be very selective re voluntary work: A lot of people are too busy simply because they take on work that they strictly do not need to do, particularly from sources external to their core work/job. I try and only take on work where I am very interested in the issue or which would be really beneficial to me. The rest gets politely declined.. Pick and choose your policy reviews: This is not dissimilar to the above. If you are on any committees related to your work you will be asked, with relative frequency, ...
I misspoke. This is a blog in three parts, not the two parts I originally thought. Part I is available here. This is Part II. Part III is called Post-Clock Time Management but in order to have it make sense, I need to finish up the history of time management in Part II below. So bear with me as I lay the groundwork for the exciting Part III Post-Clock Time Management. In the 1920s the country prospered. The enormous post-WWI working age population clocked in at factories, meat packing plants and offices, but underlying economic dynamics would soon result in the Great Depression. Fully 25% of the population would be off the clock, jobless, aimless, and without the structure of normal modern life.
