The Flu Seasons and the Missing Data: A Matched-Pair Analysis Northern and Southern Hemispheres 2013-2014 and Hong Kong,...
In the US we found that A(H3N2) behaved differently from A(H1N1). For Influenza A(H3N2), the symmetry for weeks 01 to 12 OR=0.62(0.57, 0.68) showed no change from OR=0.39(0.23, 0.67) for weeks 41_52. This difference can be examined more closely by the weekly computations. The scatter diagram of the weekly symmetry coefficients for A(H1N1) closely resembled that for A(H3N2) but Influenza A(H1N1) had a 6-8 week lead ahead of A(H3N2). This 6-8 week lead was reflected at the weekly ratios of H1 to H3 antigens. The cdc ratios for H1 to H3 antigens were decidedly elevated at 10/1 for week 49, at 99/7 for week 6 and 296/40 for week 12. On the background of this increased H1/H3 ratio only in the US, we found that it was not just simple coincidence that the west-to-east trajectory of Influenza A(H1N1) was increasing in the US from OR=0.76(0.65, 0.91) for week 41_52 to OR=1.95(1.82, 2.1) for weeks 01_12. We summarized the evidence for this difference with the McNemars Test for Canada/USA between ...

Variceal bleeding is aggravated by portal venous invasion of hepatocellular carcinoma: a matched nested case-control study |...
We hypothesized that portal vein tumor thrombosis (PVTT) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) increases portal pressure and causes esophageal varices and variceal bleedings. We examined the incidence of high-risk varices and variceal bleeding and determined the indications for variceal screening and prophylaxis. This study included 1709 asymptomatic patients without any prior history of variceal hemorrhage or endoscopic prophylaxis who underwent upper endoscopy within 30 days before or after initial anti-HCC treatment. Of these patients, 206 had PVTT, and after 1:2 individual matching, 161 of them were matched with 309 patients without PVTT. High-risk varices were defined as large/medium varices or small varices with red-color signs and variceal bleeding. Bleeding rates from the varices were compared between matched pairs. Risk factors for variceal bleeding in the entire set of patients with PVTT were also explored. In the matched-pair analysis, the proportion of high-risk varices at screening (23.0% vs.

Hardell L, Carlberg M, Mild KH (2005b) Hardell and colleagues have previously presented results of two case-control studies of the risk of brain tumours in users of cell phones. The current paper reports on a third study. The cases were patients with brain tumour recruited during July 1, 2000, and December 31, 2003. They were residents of two medical regions in Sweden - Uppsala/Orebro and Linkoping. All had a histopathological diagnosis reported to the cancer registries. Controls were from the same region and were matched for age and sex. A questionnaire was sent to the participants and the answers supplemented by a phone call with a trained interviewer. The year of diagnosis of a case was used for the corresponding control in analyses using time of use of a phone. Attempts were made to ascertain type of phone used, and the ear used during a phone call. Although cases were matched with controls, matched-pair analyses were not used. A large number of statistical results are presented, but there ...
Glioblastoma Radiotherapy Using IMRT or Proton Beams - Full Text View - ClinicalTrials.gov
Radiation therapy is an integral part of the multimodal primary therapy of glioblastomas. As the overall prognosis in this tumor entity remains unfavorable, current research is focused on additional drug therapies, which are often accompanied by increases in toxicity. By using proton beams instead of photon beams, it is possible to protect large parts of the brain which are not affected by the tumor more effectively. An initial retrospective matched-pair analysis showed that this theoretical physical benefit is also clinically associated with a reduction in toxicity during therapy and in the first few months thereafter. The aim of the GRIPS study is to prospectively test this clinical benefit in a randomized, open-label Phase III study. Patients are treated in the study using either modern photon radiation techniques (standard arm) or proton beams (experimental arm). The primary endpoint is the cumulative toxicity CTC grade 2 and higher in the first 4 months. Secondary endpoints include overall ...

Objective This retrospective cohort study examined the effect of birth order on neonatal morbidity and mortality in very preterm twins. Study Design Using 2005 to 2012 data from the Canadian Neonatal Network, very preterm twins born between 24 (0/7) and 32 (6/7) weeks of gestation were included. Odds of morbidity and mortality of second-born cotwins compared with first-born cotwins were examined by matched-pair analysis. Outcomes were neonatal death, severe brain injury (intraventricular hemorrhage grade 3 or 4 or persistent periventricular echogenicity), bronchopulmonary dysplasia, severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) (, stage 2), necrotizing enterocolitis (≥ stage 2), and respiratory distress syndrome (RDS ...
Effect of breast feeding on intelligence in children: prospective study, sibling pairs analysis, and meta-analysis | The BMJ
Our search yielded 431 references, 73 of which reported original data for full term infants. In 19 reports the analysis explicitly controlled for parental IQ and in one further report10 it implicitly controlled for parental IQ via sibling comparisons. The 19 reports used data from 12 studies because studies that followed children prospectively and assessed them at different ages often repeated the analysis and published the results separately. When the published results did not present the data in a comparable format, we approached the corresponding author directly.. The figure summarises eight of the 12 studies,27-34 together with the results for PIAT total score from our study. We excluded four studies because the data were no longer available in a suitable form,35 nearly 100% had some breast feeding36 (T Vik, personal communication), or we could not contact the authors.3738 When a study assessed children at more than one age we chose the oldest age available as childhood measures of ...
Effect of breast feeding on intelligence in children: prospective study, sibling pairs analysis, and meta-analysis | The BMJ
The article on Breastfeeding and IQ in the BMJ was read with much interest, however, the duration of breastfeeding is far too short to expect any significant effect on intelligence, as claimed. The authors report that the median duration of breastfeeding is three months and the 95th percentile is 14 months. This duration of breastfeeding is far too short to test the hypothesis that there is a link between breastfeeding and IQ.. There is increasing evidence that the long term health benefits of breastfeeding is to be found in the emotional-social-sexual domain rather than in the IQ domain and it takes breastfeeding bonding for 2.5 years to optimize brain-behavioral development to realize these emotional-social-sexual developental effects.. The studies by this author on 26 tribal cultures with weaning age of 2.5 years or greater have documented that 77% of these cultures are rated low or absent in depression/suicide; and that a statistically significant difference exists in rated suicides ...
Molecular Dynamics Simulation of the Structure Transformation before and after Ni Melting
Abstract: A series of molecular dynamics simulations for the structure transformation during heating and melting of FCC Ni have been performed with the Tight-binding potential developed by Cleri and Rosato. The simulated melting point of Ni at constant pressure condition is between 1850 K and 1900 K. The static structural informations, such as the radial distribution functions and the distributions of the coordination numbers, have been obtained during the simulation. The calculated diffusion coefficient of the liquid Ni is about 5.02×10−9 m2•s−1 at 1900 K, which is consistent with the experimental result. The possible distortion of local structure of FCC crystal and the relevant changes of the types of the atom pairs (indexed by Honeycutt-Anderesen pair analysis technique) have been analyzed. The distributions of the short-range ordered (SRO) structures of FCC and defective icosahedra at different temperatures are calculated combining the local configuration search and H-A pair analysis ...

A method to detect single-nucleotide polymorphisms accounting for a linkage signal using covariate-based affected relative pair...
Owing to the complexity of the genetic models underlying complex traits, model-free linkage methods, which do not require the specification of a disease model, are a popular choice. With these methods, inclusion of covariates increases the power to detect linkage [1], provided that the covariates reflect underlying locus heterogeneity. The method allows the genetic relative risk to depend on the covariate so that, in effect, the allele sharing at the marker locus differs for different values of the covariate. A general conditional-logistic model developed by Olson [2] provides a unified framework to incorporate covariates, and this model is implemented in LODPAL (SAGE, version 6.1.0) [3]. A modified one-parameter model has been proposed [4], so that only one additional parameter per covariate is required.. To identify single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that may explain the observed linkage signals, several researchers have developed methods for an affected pair analysis [5-10] and for ...
Practical Fragments: Calculating hotspots in detail
The choice of cyclohexadienone and aniline as probes seems a bit bizarre since the former can accept two hydrogen bonds and the latter can donate two hydrogen bonds (as well as accepting one). The problem with having two HB acceptor (or donor) sites is that deploying one site may place the other in an unfavorable environment. Five-membered rings might represent a better option for this sort analysis. For example, ( pyrrole , furan , cyclopentadiene ) or ( N-methylpyrrole , 3-methylpyrrole , N-methylimidazole ). I think the authors are actually doing matched molecular pair analysis rather than Free-Wilson analysis given the focus on group efficiency. Given that the authors have quoted a group efficiency of 1.5 (Ill assume kcal/(mol.HeavyAtom) ) in the PKB example, Ill flag up slides 18 and 19 in this presentation since these may be relevant to the discussion. ...

Objectives: The aim of this research was to determine the prevalence, distribution, and associations of molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) with perinatal complications (PC), childhood illness (CI), and prolonged antibiotic consumption (PAC) among children attending the Polyclinic, Kulliyyah of Dentistry, IIUM, from February 2013 until December 2013. Materials and methods: A matched-pair case control study on children of 7 to 14 years of age was conducted. MIH was determined based on criteria from EAPD seminar, Athens 2003 (Weerheijm et al., 2003). Inter-examiner reliability was tested with Kappa statistic (0.80). This research was approved by the IIUM Research Ethic Committee (IREC). Results: Out of 201 patients, 25 were detected having MIH. The prevalence of MIH was 12.4% within the 11 month period. Among those 25 patients, 52.0% were boys and 48.0% were girls. Locations of MIH were found in maxilla (57%) and mandible (43%). There was no statistically significant association between MIH and ...

Stereotactic body radiotherapy in operable patients with stage I NSCLC: where is the evidence? - Zurich Open Repository and...
This review summarizes the evidence of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) as an alternative to surgery (lobectomy and sublobar resection) for stage I NSCLC. Three randomized trials comparing SBRT and surgery were initiated but all three were stopped early due to poor accrual. As the next level of evidence, results from matched-pair analyses performed in single-institutional (n = 4), multi-institutional (n = 3) and population-based (n = 3) settings are available. There was close agreement between all studies that SBRT is at least equivalent to sublobar resection making it the preferred treatment for a high-risk population. SBRT was equivalent to lobectomy in the endpoints of loco-regional control and cancer-specific survival. Disease-free survival and overall survival were inferior after SBRT compared with lobectomy in one and two studies, respectively, and not significantly different in all other studies. Consequently, for patients without relevant comorbidities, who are accepting the risk of ...

Patella luxation (PL) occurs in both small and large breed dogs. Among the large breed dogs, the Flat-Coated Retriever seems to be predisposed to the condition. A survey in 354 Flat-Coated Retrievers revealed that 40 percent were affected with some degree of PL. Males and females were equally affected. A positive correlation was found between the occurrence of PL in the parent(s) and that in the offspring. An autosomal recessive mode of inheritance was suggested. The Flat-Coated Retriever has an annual birth rate of 700 pups in the Netherlands; 75 percent of the owners are members of the Dutch Flat-Coated Retriever Club (FRC). Since 1985 more than 3100 Flat-Coated Retrievers have been clinically investigated by the same specialist and findings are available in a database. At least 20 of the recently included litters had several littermates positive for PL. The genetic research proposed in this project is affected sibling pair analysis. Injury to the far side occupant has been demonstrated as a significant portion of the total trauma in side impacts. The objective of the study was to determine the response of PMHS in far side impact configurations, with and without generic countermeasures, and compare responses to the WorldSID and THOR dummies. A far side impact buck was designed for a sled test system that included a center console and three-point belt system. The buck allowed for additional options of generic countermeasures including shoulder or thorax plates or an inboard shoulder belt. The entire buck could be mounted on the sled in either a 90-degree (3-oclock PDOF) or a 60-degree (2-oclock PDOF) orientation. A total of 18 tests on six PMHS were done to characterize the far side impact environment at both low (11 km/h) and high (30 km/h) velocities. WorldSID and THOR-NT tests were completed in the same configurations to conduct matched-pair comparisons ...
Five-year survival after EVAR for ruptured AAA improving
Varkevisser et al identified repairs for ruptured infrarenal AAA within the VQI registry between 2004 and 2018 and compared five-year survival of both EVAR and open repair between the early (2004-2012) and late (2013-2018) cohorts.. Within the 2004-2018 VQI database, they identified 4,638 ruptured AAA repairs, which included 409 EVARs in the early cohort and 2,250 in the late cohort, as well as 558 open repairs in the early cohort and 1,421 in the late cohort.. The authors report that propensity matching resulted in 366 matched pairs of late versus early EVAR and 391 matched-pairs of late versus early open repair. When comparing EVAR with open repair, propensity matching resulted in 277 matched pairs of early EVAR versus open, and 1,117 matched pairs of late EVAR versus open.. In matched EVAR patients, five-year survival was higher in the late cohort (63% vs. 49%; hazard ratio [HR], 0.77; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.61-0.97; p=0.027), whereas there was no difference between matched late ...

PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases: Discriminating Malaria from Dengue Fever in Endemic Areas: Clinical and Biological Criteria,...
Author Summary The authors present a retrospective matched-pair study on dengue and malaria performed in French Guiana. These two infections are major public health concerns in tropical regions, especially in South America and Southeast Asia, where they affect neglected populations which makes them interesting to be published in a journal aiming to publish about neglected tropical diseases. Although the pathogeneses of these two arthropod-borne differ, their clinical and biological presentations are unspecific. During dengue epidemics, hundreds of patients are admitted weekly with diffuse pains and fever at the emergency room. Among them, it is difficult to accurately distinguish malaria attacks, which are far less frequent than dengue fever cases. Moreover, it may be impossible to provide a parasitological microscopic examination for all patients. We believe the results of the present study, based on a sample of n = 416 individual are worthwhile as they support evidence that biological factors can help
Range modulation in proton therapy planning: a simple method for mitigating effects of increased relative biological...
Proton beam therapy (PBT) has emerged as an important advance in radiation therapy, particularly for children and young adults. Although there are data supporting equivalent rates of cure using equivalent doses of proton versus photon treatments, the decreased dose to nearby OARs and substantial reduction of irradiated tissue volume is a promising strategy to address acute and late injury to normal tissues from therapy [1]. Additionally, a matched pair analysis [2] supports a range from no difference to fewer second malignancies in patients treated with protons versus photon therapy. Similar data comparing photon CSI to proton CSI from multiple institutions also suggests a clear correlation of irradiated volume to risk of second malignancy [3-6].. Increased tissue effects at the end of the spread out Bragg Peak (SOBP) is a defined, measured biologic phenomenon [7-10]. The potential for unintentional tissue injury due to putative increased relative biological effectiveness (RBE) at the distal ...
Plant community response to the East Amarillo Complex wildfires in the Southern High Plains, USA in: Community Ecology Volume...
Severe wildfires are increasing in extent in the western US. We used a matched-pairs design with plots in burned and non-burned areas to study effects of the East Amarillo Complex (EAC) wildfires on mixed grass prairie mean community composition and variability in composition. Species composition and ground cover data were collected at 5 study sites each year for three years following the EAC. Fire effects on mean species composition were analyzed with permutational analyses of variance; temporal patterns were analyzed with permutational anova and nonmetric multidimensional scaling; and an index of multivariate dispersion was used to assess variability in plant community composition. We found weak immediate impacts (year 1) of wildfire on mean species composition, but strong impacts by year three. Two general patterns of changes in mean species composition emerged: at 3 study sites, there was a progressive divergence in similarity between burned and non-burned areas following wildfire whereas at ...

Prognosis of rectal cancer patients improves with downstaging by intensified neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy - a matched pair...
Neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy has been proven superior to adjuvant treatment in reducing the rate of local recurrence without impairing cancer related survival or the incidence of distant metastases in standard protocols of neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy. The present study aimed at addressing the effects of an intensified neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy on long term cancer related and disease free survival. A total of 387 patients underwent oncologic resection for rectal cancer in our institution between January 2000 and December 2009. There were 106 patients (27.4%) who received an intensified radiochemotherapy protocol completely and without excluding criteria (study group). A matched pair analysis was performed by comparing the study group with patients undergoing primary surgery and postoperative radiochemotherapy, if necessary and possible (control group). Matching was carried out in descending order for UICC stage, R-status, tumor height, T-, N-, V-, L-, M- and G-category of the TNM-system according

Abstract.
To find out the reason why some people get infected directly with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), whereas some get infected with drug-susceptible tuberculosis (DS-TB), a 1:1:1 matched-pairs case-control study was conducted to identify predictors associated with primary MDR-TB and primary DS-TB against the control in Jiangsu Province, China. All three groups were geographically matched (by neighborhood) and matched on sex and age (±5 years). In total, 110 participants were enrolled in each of three matched groups. Conditional logistic regression analysis showed that predictors independently associated with primary MDR-TB were illiteracy or primary school education, annual per capita income ≤ US$2,000, per capita living space < 40 m2, and interval ≥ 7 days of eating fruits; predictors with primary DS-TB were body mass index ≤ 20 and feeling higher life pressure. This indicates that there are different predictors impacting the transmission range of primary MDR-TB and primary

What Is Agonal Breathing? Symptions & Causes of Gasping
It should be noted that agonal breathing is not a cause of death in and of itself.. The underlying cause is usually something like cardiac arrest or ischemic stroke, and the patients chances of survival depend on a number of factors-such as their existing state of health and any underlying medical conditions, their age, and how quickly they get help.. Cardiac arrest usually occurs outside of a hospital-more than 88% of the 395,000 cases that occur each year happen in someones home. The survival rate (depending on which statistics youre looking at) may be as low as 6% or even less. But it tends to go up significantly if the victim is lucky enough to receive CPR from a bystander very quickly after collapse.. Ischemic stroke is a bit more survivable in the short term-some studies have shown a 60% survival rate after one year-but the number goes down to 31% after five years..
