Masticatory muscles are closely involved in mastication, pronunciation, and swallowing, and it is therefore important to study the specific functions and dynamics of the mandibular and masticatory muscles. However, the shortness of muscle fibers and the diversity of movement directions make it difficult to study and simplify the dynamics of mastication. The purpose of this study was to use 3-dimensional (3D) simulation to observe the functions and movements of each of the masticatory muscles and the mandible while chewing. To simulate the masticatory movement, computed tomographic images were taken from a single Korean volunteer (30-year-old man), and skull image data were reconstructed in 3D (Mimics; Materialise, Leuven, Belgium). The 3D-reconstructed masticatory muscles were then attached to the 3D skull model. The masticatory movements were animated using Maya (Autodesk, San Rafael, CA) based on the mandibular motion path. During unilateral chewing, the mandible was found to move laterally toward the

Masticatory muscle myositis (MMM) is an inflammatory disease in dogs affecting the muscles of mastication (chewing). It is also known as atrophic myositis or eosinophilic myositis. MMM is the most common inflammatory myopathy in dogs. The disease mainly affects large breed dogs. German Shepherd Dogs and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels may be predisposed. There is a similar disease of the eye muscles found in Golden Retrievers. Symptoms of acute MMM include swelling of the jaw muscles, drooling, and pain on opening the mouth. Ophthalmic signs may include third eyelid protrusion, red eyes, and exophthalmos (protruding eyeballs). In chronic MMM there is atrophy of the jaw muscles, and scarring of the masticatory muscles due to fibrosis may result in inability to open the mouth (trismus). The affected muscles include the temporalis, masseter, and pterygoid muscles. The disease is usually bilateral. MMM is caused by the presence of 2M fibers in the muscles of the jaw. 2M fibers are not found elsewhere ...
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether vertical facial patterns influence maximal occlusal force (MOF), masticatory muscle electromyographic (EMG) activity, and medial mandibular flexure (MMF). Material and Methods: Seventy-eight dentate subjects were divided into 3 groups by Rickettss analysis: brachyfacial, nnesofacial and dolychofacial. Maximum occlusal force in the molar region was bilaterally measured with a force transducer. The electromyographic activities of the masseter and anterior temporal muscles were recorded during maximal voluntary clenching. Medial mandibular flexure was calculated by subtracting the intermolar distance of maximum opening or protrusion from the distance in the rest position. The data were analyzed using ANOVA followed by Tukeys HSD test. The significance level was set at 5%. Results: Data on maximum occlusal force showed that shorter faces had higher occlusal forces (P,0.0001). Brachyfacial subjects presented higher levels of masseter ...
An article in Cephalgia should be of great interest to Chicago Patients suffering from headaches or migraines. The study showed that over 80% of all patients experiencing headaches also had masticatory muscle pain, or pain in the jaw muscles. This is critical information because referred muscle pain is a primary cause of all headaches It is the primary source of pain in tension headache and chronic daily headaches but is also implicated as a trigger or exacerbating factor in all headaches. Learn more at www.thinkbetterlife.com. Headches are a Trigeminal Nerve Disorder and the largest input to the trigeminal nervous system are the jaws, the jaw muscles, the jaw joints, the teeth and the periodontal ligaments. The utilization of medications can be a godsend to patients suffering headaches but the single best treatment of headaches may be prevention. Neuromuscular Dentistry often referred to as physiologic dentistry is specifically designed to reduce nociception or bad input to the trigeminal ...
On the basis of well-founded clinical evaluations and taking into account special methodological recommendations, surface electromyography (EMG) enables the acquisition of valid and reliable quantitative data on the functional condition of the masticatory muscles as a euromuscular functional analysis. On the basis of a current review of the literature, surface EMG appears to be able to deliver additional diagnostic and therapy-relevant information. Meaningful EMG data can be gained regarding resting activity, maximum muscle activation, frequency spectrum under various loading conditions, as well as bilateral symmetry of the contraction behavior of the jaw muscles. With these parameters completed by kinematic information on movements of the mandible it appears to be possible under clinical conditions to assess a) the neuromuscular chewing performance after prosthetic reconstructions, b) to record the influence of pain on the neuromuscular system, and c) to document the individual efffect of ...

Dolichofacial subjects presents poorer mechanical advantage, less efficiency in masticatory muscles during mastication and in generating bite force, smaller occlusal contact area and masticatory capacity when compared to brachyfacial individuals.. Wide, bilateral chewing cycles were related to better masticatory performance, however, unilateral chewing was reported to be very common in population, and it has been associated to lateral asymmetry on bite force and occlusal contact area.. It has been reported that dolichofacial subjects need greater muscular effort during mastication when compared to meso and brachyfacial subjects. This may cause functional overloading of weaker masticatory muscles, and may lead to functional asymmetries. ...

Thirty TMD cases and 10 controls were included in the study. All participants were recruited from the School of Dentistry, University of Greifswald. All subjects gave their written consent to participate in the study. They then completed a TMD history questionnaire and underwent a clinical examination. The examination included palpation of the masticatory muscles and the TMJs, range of mandibular motion measurements, and assessment of joint noises. The TMD cases were required to have a diagnoses of myofascial pain and/or arthralgia. Controls had to be free of pain symptoms in their masticatory muscles and TMJs. Body posture was measured during five minutes of walking using an ultrasound-distance measuring device (sonoSens® Monitor) with small sensors placed on the skin that continually record changes in the distance between them. A static posture evaluation was performed with a contactless, and radiation-free static measurement of the back surface and spine using a 3D measurement system ...
First, an x-ray would be taken to figure out shape of maxilla and mandible bone, also the nerve location. After the x-ray, an incision will be performed inside the mouth and a removal of the proportional mandibular angle is performed, to prevent occurence of secondary angle, which is removing angle along the jaw line, effective for downsizing the entire mandible, for both frontal and profile. For some necessary cases, a cortical fracture (a surgical method of removing the outer layer of the jaw bone) is performed. The jaw bone is formed in three layers. For the case with excessively developed masticatory muscle, the masticatory muscle removal procedure also has to be performed at the same time. And for the cases with excessive fat on the face, of course the removal of buccal fat has to be performed. ...

Mice are arguably the dominant model organisms for studies investigating the effect of genetic traits on the pathways to mammalian skull and teeth development, thus being integral in exploring craniofacial and dental evolution. The aim of this study is to analyse the functional significance of masticatory loads on the mouse mandible and identify critical stress accumulations that could trigger phenotypic and/or growth alterations in mandible-related structures. To achieve this, a 3D model of mouse skulls was reconstructed based on Micro Computed Tomography measurements. Upon segmenting the main hard tissue components of the mandible such as incisors, molars and alveolar bone, boundary conditions were assigned on the basis of the masticatory muscle architecture. The model was subjected to four loading scenarios simulating different feeding ecologies according to the hard or soft type of food and chewing or gnawing biting movement. Chewing and gnawing resulted in varying loading patterns, with biting type

Despite great interest and decades of research, the musculoskeletal relationships of the masticatory system in primates are still not fully understood. However, without a clear understanding of the interplay between muscles and bones it remains difficult to understand the functional significance of morphological traits of the skeleton. Here, we aim to study the impacts of the masticatory muscles on the shape of the cranium and the mandible as well as their co-variation in strepsirrhine primates. To do so, we use 3D geometric morphometric approaches to assess the shape of each bone of the skull of 20 species for which muscle data are available in the literature ...

Abstract: The relationship between cranial morphology and diet has long been investigated in bats. Bats of the genus Myotis include insectivorous, facultatively piscivorous, and piscivorous species. We tested the hypothesis that facultatively piscivorous (five Myotis species) and piscivorous species (M. vivesi) present cranial morphological and functional changes with respect to insectivorous taxa (16 Myotis species). Cranial shapes in skull and mandible modules were described with four geometric landmark configurations in these dietary groups. Gape capacity was measured with the stretch factors for temporal and masseter muscles. Geometric configurations from two skull and two mandible shapes were analyzed to detect differences in cranial morphology in relation to diet. Differences in cranial morphology were found between piscivorous and insectivorous species involving the mandibular process where masticatory muscles are attached. Linear regression analysis of Procrustes distances and gape ...
We got some unsettling news on Friday about Jed. Even though we dont have a blog, Jed sure could use some POTP right now. Hes been having a string of health problems for some time, and we just got a diagnosis that ties them all together. Jed has an autoimmune disease that is attacking different parts of his body. Right now, the biggest problems are acute IBD [inflamed intestines, which keeps him from being able to extract all the nutrition from his food - and makes him feel pretty bad] and eosinophalic masticatory muscle myositis, which is causing his head and jaw muscles to atrophy. While we work to figure out the best combination of medications, holistic supplements and diet to hopefully slow down the progress of this disease, we could use all the help we can get. Weve seen the POTP at work to help others, and we figure it might help Jed. Would you please use your blog to ask for the POTP for Jed? ...

Objectives: The digastric muscle is an important landmark in head and neck surgeries. Important neurovascular structures such as the spinal accessory and hypoglossal nerves (HNs), internal jugular vein (IJV) and internal carotid artery lie deep to the posterior belly of digastric (PBD); the study relating to it deserves special mention in anatomical literature. Therefore, the present study aims to describe the PBD in relation to the essential anatomical landmarks.Materials and Methods: This study was carried out using 10 cadavers preserved in 10% formalin. The midpoint of IJV in the neck was identified as the point between the angle of the mandible and midclavicular point. The anatomical landmarks considered for measuring the parameters were tip of the mastoid process (TMP), loop of HN, midpoint of IJV, bifurcation of common carotid artery (CCA) and the midpoint of PBD. Various parameters were measured using the digital calipers. Results: The length of PBD was 3.77 ± 1.08 cm on right and 3.15 ± ...
Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) comprise a number of clinical conditions characterized by changes in masticatory muscles, temporomandibular joints (TMJ) and associated structures. According to researches in the U.S. and Europe, chronic orofacial pain encompasses 40 % of all chronic pain conditions, of which 10-15 % is related to the TMD. Pain and sensitivity of masticatory muscles and TMJ are most prominent symptoms of TMD. Although the etiopathogenesis of TMD has not been fully elucidated, in patients with TMD were observed changes in the processing of painful stimuli, indicating the importance of ion channels in the development of craniofacial painful conditions. Ion channels seam to regulate neuronal excitability. Since sensory inputs from craniofacial region are transmitted to higher neural centers responsible for pain sensations through trigeminal ganglion (TRG) neurons, changes in expression of various ion channels in TRG neurons might be causative in development of TMD ...
Environmental remodelling of the craniofacial musculature is obligatory for successful outcomes following interventions such as functional appliance therapy or orthognathic surgery. Genetically driven remodelling of the craniofacial musculature is also seen in individuals with altered facial form. The processes that are involved in the remodelling of intramuscular connective tissue need to be activated in such situations. Such processes require activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and the tissue inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases (TIMPs), which are responsible for extracellular matrix (ECM) turnover. The aim of this study was, therefore, to establish the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 and their inhibitors, TIMP-1 and TIMP-2, in the masseter muscle of humans with both normal and increased vertical facial form and to assess whether this expression had any value as a predictor of facial form.. Biopsies were taken from 20 subjects (10 with vertical facial deformity and 10 with normal ...

Planass fundamental laws are based on the neuro-occlusal concept, which plays a major role in the development and evolution of the stomatognatic system. The alterations of the masticatory functions contribute to the modeling of the structures that form the stomatognatic system.. Methodology The purpose of the study was to assess the masticatory stereotype of a group of young people and to analyse the functional masticatory angles.. We have assessed the amplitude of the functional masticatory angles on a group of 20 students. The masticatory angles depend on the occlusal morphology (cusp size), age and masticatory movements.. Results Great alterations are present with patients with dento-maxillary anomalies, edentations, dental injuries and unilateral mastication.. Conclusion The data obtained allow us to improve the masticatory functions as part of a complex oral rehabilitation. The functional masticatory angles are ...
The organization of the emotion-related somatic motor behavior, including jaw movements, is governed _disibledevent=line-height:2;font-family:Verdana;>ion (RFp) of the medulla oblongata. The CeA also has an inhibitory influence on non-dopaminergic (probably GABAergic) neurons in the retrorubral field of the midbrain that send their axons to the RFp. Furthermore, the CeA and lateral hypothalamus including the PLH may also modulate Vm neurons via projections to the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus which contains the cell bodies of primary afferent neurons conveying inputs from the masticatory muscle spindles or the periodontal ligament receptors to jaw closing motoneurons within the Vm. These pathways from the subcortical limbic structures to the trigeminal motor system in the lower brainstem underlie the regulation of emotional jaw movements.

INTRODUCTION. Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a sub-classification of musculoskeletal disorders and include a wide range of orofacial conditions with multiple etiologies that mask a great variety of subjective signs and symptoms. These can be referred isolated or combined from the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the masticatory muscles, the cervical muscles and associated structures. TMD and its referred symptomatology in their acute-chronic condition can seriously affect quality of life. The causal relationship between heterotopic pain and the masticatory system is found in large numbers of adult patients as well as in the infant population. These symptoms appear similarly in adults as in children, (Youniss, 1991; Lipton et al., 1993; Skeppar & Nilner, 1993; McNeill, 1997) but the prevalence of TMD pain can range between 1.5 to 2 times higher in women than in men. (Solberg et al., 1979; Klausner, 1994; Dao & LeResche, 2000; Lund et al., 2001). TMD usually manifests itself as symptoms in ...

Bear in mind that these muscles must also relax in order for the mouth to open. Since these two muscles are the largest muscles which close the jaw, when they become involved in masticatory myositis, the primary clinical sign is trouble in opening the jaws.. Masticatory myositis can be divided into an acute and chronic form. It must be remembered that one acute attack can lead immediately into the chronic form of the disease, although, more often than not, multiple, recurrent acute attacks are necessary. Symptoms of the acute form involve the the swollen, firm and painful temporalis and masseter muscles. The dogs head often appears swollen and larger than normal. The dog will be reluctant or unable to open his mouth. Opening the mouth more than 1 inch or so elicits an extremely painful response. This results in difficulty in eating and often the owner notices increased drooling as well. This swelling may even cause exophthalmia or the eyes to bug out. Usually a fever is present and the lymph ...
The trigger points within the muscle may cause pain that refers to the overlying skin. Usually the pain radiates to mouth, throat and ear. The pain is of diffused type, as compared to lateral pterygoid which occurs in precisely smaller area. Added problems such as difficulty in swallowing and restriction to jaw openings also occur. Massaging the area can help reduce pain, however, pain killers are the treatment of choice since this condition can go away with time.. ...
To convert the elevator car subcharts to atomic subcharts, a few steps are needed. These steps reflect the rules that govern the use of atomic subcharts. For a description of these rules, click here and here.. The approach taken below is to make a library atomic subchart out of the Elevator_A subchart and then use linked instances of this library instead of the elevator car subcharts.. Step 1. Export Elevator_Manager functions and data to make them visible to atomic subcharts. Because atomic subcharts cannot call functions defined in a container chart unless they are exported, we need to pull the functions in the Elevator_Manager which are called by Elevator_A and Elevator_B to the chart level: doing so will make these functions visible to the atomic subcharts.. To export the functions at the chart level, migrate all the functions used by the elevator car subcharts out of the Elevator_Manager chart and into the parent chart as shown below:. ...
When a TMJ TMD diagnosis and decision to treat is made, the first step in therapy is to relax the masticatory muscles, which are in a state of hyperactivity, fatigue or in spasm. This is done with TENS or Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation. This procedure uses a minute electrical current generated by a 9-volt battery. It relaxes the facial muscles.. Usually TENS is used for one hour, sometimes longer. Feeling a series of rhythmic taps on the cheeks, patients can read or nap during TENS therapy. It is like an electronic massage of the facial muscles. This is preferable to medication, which can also relax muscles throughout the body resulting in unwanted side effects. This procedure comfortably and effectively relaxes the facial and jaw muscles with minimal electrical stimulation.. Before and After TENS. Establishing the new occlusion (bite) position. Following the TENS procedure, the resting jaw position is recorded, as are changes in the resting activity of the muscles with EMG. The ...

and Dr Ernesto Blanco of the Institute of Physics, in Montevideo, report their findings in the journal Proceedings B of the Royal Society.. Larger than a bull, the newly-identified but now extinct species is the biggest member of the order Rodentia. By comparison it makes todays king of rodents, the 60-kilogram capybara, look like a pygmy shrew.. The skull of the extraordinary beast was found in a broken boulder on Kiyu Beach on the coast of Uruguays River Plate region, the researchers say.. Its skull measures a whopping 53 centimetres and has massive incisors several centimetres long.. Despite this fearsome look, the creature was not carnivorous and looked more hippo-like than rat-like.. Its small grinding teeth suggest it had only weak masticatory muscles for chewing food, and probably tucked into soft vegetation, fruit and squidgy aquatic plants in deltas, the researchers say.. Its food intake must have been vast, given its huge size.. Other denizens of this world of marsh and forest would ...
In a series of recent articles, we suggest that family dentists, military dentists and psychiatrists with expertise in posttraumatic stress disorder (especially in the Veterans Health Administration) are likely to see an increased number of patients with symptomatic jaw-clenching and early stages of tooth- grinding (Bracha et al., 2005). Returning warfighters and other returnees from military deployment may be especially at risk for high rates of clenching- induced masticatory muscle disorders at early stages of incisor grinding. The literature we have recently reviewed strongly supports the conclusion that clenching and grinding may primarily be a manifestation of experiencing extreme fear or severe chronic distress (respectively). We have recently reviewed the clinical and paleoanthropological literature and have noted that ancestral warfare and ancestral combat, in the early Paleolithic Environment of Evolutionary Adaptedness (EEA) may be a neglected factor explaining the conservation of the ...

So here goes: Rule #1: The two buttons available to call an elevator have an up arrow and a down arrow. These are meant to indicate whether you want to go up or down, not whether the elevator must come up or down. For example, if youre on Floor 3 and you want to go to Floor 7, you need to press the Up arrow button. Many people see that the elevator is on Floor 5 and press the Down arrow button. When I ask them why they pressed the Down arrow button when they wanted to go up, they say I want the elevator to come down. Well, the elevator will figure out where it has to go but you please just let it know where you want to go because the elevator has no way to figure that out. Corollary to Rule #1 : Never press both Up and Down arrows. It does not cause the elevator to come t ...

We have hope, says Brandi Helvey. Jacob was one of the lucky ones. He survived a scenario that - more often than not - has killed children from three years old to 12.. We had no idea that this could happen, when we bought this elevator, says Michael Helvey, president of a real estate company in Atlanta. And I can guarantee you that the people who own these things dont have a concept that a child could get into that space. There was no mention of child endangerment. Nobody all at explained to us the significance of what could happen. If their customers havent a clue, the companies that design and manufacture these types of elevators, used in residential setting and small apartment buildings, know all about it. Children have been getting entrapped between the hoistway (or swing) and elevator doors, crushed, injured and killed for decades, despite warnings that go back to the 1930s, industry standards that addressed the issue nearly six decades ago, and a low-cost, post-installation fix. The ...
As usual, when the elevator arrived, I step away from the door so that people could come out from the elevator... I was standing a bit far from the elevator door and this indon maid was standing beside me... When the elevator arrived, she quickly jumped into the elevator after the two person came out... even though i stood nearer to the elevator door... Then i made my way going into the elevator straight after the Indon Maid went in... i saw the Indon Maid pressed a button and i assumed she was pressing the open button... so I made my step into the elevator with confident... But all of the sudden the door slammed @ me, luckily door detector has overwritten the Indon Maid action... otherwise i would not be here to blog about this ... that stupid Indon Maid, she didnt press the other button (open the door) but kept pressing the button to force the door closed... WTF? I was so unhappy and gave her an angry stared since she forced the door closed instead quickly change to open the door... she ...

An exemplary magnetic coupling device (30) useful for coupling elevator doors includes a core (40) having an exterior surface. An active portion (48) of the surface is configured to direct a magnetic flux associated with the core in a desired direction for facilitating elevator door coupling. An interruption (80) in the exterior surface near the active portion (48) is configured to establish a relatively high magnetic saturation in the core in a vicinity of the interruption (80).
Faced with a blind wall behind the doors, no answer to the alarm or shouting and a locked hatch, he got desperate then depressed. He smoked the rest of his cigs, and worried about dehydration. Of course, with all the modern safety features like multiple hoist-ropes and speed brakes he wasnt going to plummet to his death. He was just stuck in a box barely big enough to lie down in. Rescue finally came 41 hours later, and no one knows why the jam happened.. After getting out, White never returned to another day of work. He filed lawsuits, settled for barely 6 figures, and lost his job, savings and apartment. Some would say the event ruined his life, to no fault of his own. He stepped in the elevator a man, and left on a trajectory towards shambles.. Eight different security guards failed to spot him on the camera. Wonder what would happen in a similar situation in the Burj Dubai with its 46 separate elevators: two being double-deckers that will go the whole 156 floors? Probably a quicker rescue, ...
