Objective(s): Occlusal trauma is one of the most common forms of oral biting dysfunction. Long-term occlusal trauma could weaken the stomatognathic system; especially damage ones masticatory muscle. Through using the rat model, this study investigated the trophic effect of ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) on injured masseter muscle. Materials and Methods: Male Wistar rats (n=36) were randomly divided into five experimental groups and one control group (6 rats per group). Animals in the experimental group were cemented modified crowns on their mandibular first molars to artificially induce occlusal trauma in 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days. Control group was sham-treated with forced mouth-opening for about 5 min, while no crowns were placed. After 28 days of treatment, all rats were euthanized and their masseter muscle was collected. Through immunofluorescence and real-time quantitative PCR, the expression of desmin, CNTF, and CNTFRα was investigated in rat masseter muscle. The microstructure of ...
Chronic myalgia is associated with higher muscle levels of certain algesic biomarkers. The aim of this study was to investigate if hypertonic saline-induced jaw myalgia also leads to release of such biomarkers and if there were any sex differences in this respect. Healthy participants, 15 men and 15 aged-matched women (25.7 +/- 4.3 years) participated. Intramuscular microdialysis into masseter muscles was performed to sample serotonin (5-HT), glutamate, lactate, pyruvate, glucose and glycerol. After 2 hours 0.2 mL hypertonic saline (58.5 mg/mL) was injected into the masseter on one side and 0.2 mL isotonic saline (9 mg/mL) into the contralateral masseter close to the microdialysis catheter. Microdialysis continued for 1 hour after the injections. Pressure pain thresholds (PPT) and pain were assessed before and after injections. The median (IQR) peak pain intensity (0-100 visual analogue scale) after hypertonic saline was 52.5 (38.0) and after isotonic saline 7.5 (24.0) (p less than 0.05). 5-HT, ...
Effect of Short-Term Forward Head Posture Correction for Masseter Muscle Activity and Temporomandibular Joint Function for People with Upper Cross Syndrome
Environmental remodelling of the craniofacial musculature is obligatory for successful outcomes following interventions such as functional appliance therapy or orthognathic surgery. Genetically driven remodelling of the craniofacial musculature is also seen in individuals with altered facial form. The processes that are involved in the remodelling of intramuscular connective tissue need to be activated in such situations. Such processes require activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and the tissue inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases (TIMPs), which are responsible for extracellular matrix (ECM) turnover. The aim of this study was, therefore, to establish the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 and their inhibitors, TIMP-1 and TIMP-2, in the masseter muscle of humans with both normal and increased vertical facial form and to assess whether this expression had any value as a predictor of facial form.. Biopsies were taken from 20 subjects (10 with vertical facial deformity and 10 with normal ...

Looking for masseter? Find out information about masseter. The masticatory muscle, arising from the zygomatic arch and inserted into the lower jaw Explanation of masseter
In human anatomy, the masseter is one of the muscles of mastication. The masseter superficial muscle is the larger. Its fibers pass downward and backward, to be inserted into the angle and lower half of the lateral surface of the ramus mandible.
Introduction: Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a musculoskeletal disorder that involves various clinical conditions of masticatory muscles, temporomandibular joints and accompanied tissues. The most prominent symptom is pain in masticatory muscles. The etiology of TMD is poorly understood. Objectives of this study were to examine the individual effect of chronic stress and occlusal interference, as well as their combined influence on masseter muscle pain. The study also aimed to investigate influence of proposed etiological factors on systemic and local level of interleukine-6 (IL-6) and to find possible correlation between IL-6 and muscle pain. The aim was to estimate the contribution of chronic stress, occlusal interference and IL-6 levels on masseter muscle pain and to estimate contribution of chronic stress and occlusal interference on IL-6 levels. Material and methods: Experiments were performed on 50 male Wistar rats. Animals were divided in five groups of 10 rats. Groups were as ...
Purpose: The goal of the present study is to develop and evaluate an automated technique for measuring biting and chewing related surface electromyographic (EMG) activity of the masseter muscle. Methods: Data from 28 neurologically healthy participants between the ages of 18-40 were selected for this study. The procedure for collecting the bite/chew data consisted of the participant biting down and chewing three small breath mints while an EMG sensor recorded the masseter muscle activity. A five-step Matlab-based algorithm was created to accurately identify onsets and offsets of each bite and chew event. Results: Compared to manual measurements using standard conventions, the algorithm was 77% accurate in identifying the onset and offset bite events, and 95% accurate in identifying the onset and offset of chew events. Error analysis revealed a number of consistencies in the form of the errors. Additionally, bite events were typically longer in duration than the chew events and had a larger integral
To characterize the structure of jaw muscle fibres expressing masticatory (superfast) myosin, X-ray diffraction patterns of glycerinated fibres of dog masseter were compared with those of dog tibialis anterior in the relaxed state. Meridional reflections of masseter fibres were laterally broad, indicating that myosin filaments are staggered along the filament axis. Compared with tibialis anterior fibres, the peak of the first myosin layer line of masseter fibres was lower in intensity and shifted towards the meridian, while lattice spacings were larger at a similar sarcomere length. These suggest that the myosin heads of masticatory fibres are mobile, and tend to protrude from the filament shaft towards actin filaments. Lowering temperature or treating with N-phenylmaleimide shifted the peak of the first myosin layer line of tibialis anterior fibres towards the meridian and the resulting profile resembled that of masseter fibres. This suggests that the protruding mobile heads in the non-treated ...
A functional integration between the trigeminal and craniocervical sensorimotor systems has been demonstrated, with simultaneous jaw and head-neck movements during jaw opening-closing. We previously showed that pain induction in the masseter muscle increased the relative contribution of the neck component of integrated jaw-neck movements. Induced pain or manipulation of proprioception by vibration did not affect accuracy during a jaw-opening task in men. It is not known how multimodal sensory stimulation, with a combination of pain induction and vibration, affects jaw-opening accuracy and precision. The aim was to investigate how jaw-neck movements, and specifically accuracy and precision of jaw-opening, are affected during concomitant nociceptive and proprioceptive stimulation of the masseter muscle. Twenty-one healthy men performed jaw-opening to a target position, defined as 75% of individual maximum jaw opening, during control (Ctr), vibration of masseter muscles (Vib), pain induction in the ...

from your symptoms it sounds like the problem is referred pain from trigger points (painful nodules) in the masseter muscle that is at the back of your jaw bone. If you were to press in on your cheek here (from bottom of jaw bone to top in from of ear) you would likely find some very tender spots. With pressure applied they may recreate the pain you feel. The reason it is worse after eating is because of using the jaw muscles. Massage, direct pressure, moist heat and stretching that muscle could be very helpful. Trigger points in the jaw muscles often mimic tooth problems as that is where ...
Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of non-progressive developmental movement disorders inducing a strong brain reorganization in primary and secondary motor areas. Nevertheless, few studies have been dedicated to quantify brain pattern changes and correlate them with motor characteristics in CP children. In this context, it is very important to identify feasible and complementary tools able to enrich the description of motor impairments by considering their neural correlates. To this aim, we recorded the electroencephalographic activity and the corresponding event-related desynchronization (ERD) of a group of mild-to-moderate affected unilateral CP children while performing unilateral reach-to-grasp movements with both their paretic and non-paretic arms ...
They state1 that while lengthening or weakness of the scapular retractors is often blamed, a major cause is weakness and lengthening of the abdominal muscles, allowing the chest to descend and shifting the weight of the upper trunk anteriorly. This causes the chest to descend with the scapula shifting forward around the rib cage, pressing the clavicle to the first rib. In this position, the humerus internally rotates and the head and neck are brought forward. As the head and neck are brought forward, the patient is forced to extend the occiput to keep the eyes horizontal, resulting in overactivity of the suboccipital muscles. With the head in a forward position, a passive tensile force is created in the hyoid muscles resulting in hyoid muscle tension, causing the mandible to be depressed and translated posteriorly. The patient is therefore forced to contract the temporalis and masseter muscles to keep the mouth closed. This abnormal mandibular positioning can cause myofascial stress to the ...
The masseter muscle is the strongest muscle in the body and can exert a huge amount of force, this muscle is our primary chewing muscle and rarely receives a break due to eating and talking, add that to grinding and clenching through the day and night and you can clearly see this is a muscle worthy of some TLC. Discomfort in the soft tissue of the neck and shoulders may also be alleviated by treating the muscles of mastication as they often develop secondary trigger points in TMJ syndrome ...

The evolution of these traits can be seen in a series of fossils. Procynosuchus shows an increase in size of the dentary bone and the beginnings of a palate. Thrinaxodon has a reduced number of incisors, a precursor to tooth differentiation. Cynognathus (a doglike carnivore) shows a further increase in size of the dentary bone. The other three bones are located inside the back portion of the jaw. Some teeth are multicusped and the teeth fit together tightly. Diademodon (a plant eater) shows a more advanced degree of occlusion (teeth fitting tightly). Probelesodon has developed a double joint in the jaw. The jaw could hinge off two points with the upper skull. The front hinge was probably the actual hinge while the rear hinge was an alignment guide. The forward movement of a hinge point allowed for the precursor to the modern masseter muscle to anchor further forward in the jaw. This allowed for a more powerful bite. The first true mammal was Morgonucudon, a rodent-like insectivore from the late ...

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Fluori-Methane vapocoolant spray, as used in the spray and stretch technique, on decreasing a prolonged silent period duration in the masseter muscle. Ten subjects were selected, all of whom were identified as having masseter muscle dysfunction and/or spasm. The population consisted of two males and eight females, whose ages ranged from 24-58. The silent period duration of the masseter was measured following elicitation of the jaw-jerk reflex. Five readings were taken and the mean silent period duration was calculated. All means longer than 35 milliseconds were considered prolonged. An EDX 1000 electromyograph and Beckman standard size silver surface electrodes were used in recording the data. The amount of mandibular depression available was also measured. Once these measurements were completed, each subject was treated using Fluori-Methane vapocoolant spray, as used in the spray and stretch technique. The silent period duration and ...
Craniofacial asymmetry is a dentofacial deformity with genetic influences. The genes PITX2, ENPP1 and ESR1 have multiple genetic associations with functional properties in muscle and bone. The objectives of this study are to investigate how PITX2, ENPP1 and ESR1 gene expression associates with four subclassifications of craniofacial asymmetry, temporomandibular disorders and fiber type differences compared between right and left masseter muscles. We developed an asymmetry classification that diagnosed four types of asymmetry with distinctive growth patterns: Group 1 - menton deviation without ramal difference (mandibular body asymmetry); Group 2 -menton deviation with shorter ramal height on the deviated side (typical asymmetry); Group 3 - shorter ramal height on the opposite side of menton deviation (atypical asymmetry); Group 4 - menton deviation with shorter ramal height and maxillary canting on the deviated side (C-shaped asymmetry). Some of these patients are at high risk for TMD; ...

Its fibers pass downward, lateral, and posterior, and are inserted, by a strong tendinous lamina, into the lower and back part of the medial surface of the ramus and angle of the mandible, as high as the mandibular foramen. The insertion joins the masseter muscle to form a common tendinous sling which allows the medial pterygoid and masseter to be powerful elevators of the jaw. As stated by one Dr. Anderson of UDMSD, the medial pterygoid goes from the canoe to the rough water. (The canoe is the depression created by the medial and lateral plates of pterygoid process, and rough water is the rough attachment surface on the medial aspect of the angle of the mandible.) ...

Testosterone is directly involved in sex differences in masseter muscle. Thus, a brief exposure to testosterone during postnatal maturation [in castrated rabbits] is able to produce a long lasting myosin heavy chain isoform switch that is similar in magnitude to that found during normal development. (Cells Tissues Organs. 2001;169(3):210-7). I suggest this was ongoing in the robust hominids which exhibited very large masseter muscles. (These hominids were the construction of increasing testosterone which, because their brains were not using as much DHEA at the time, directed their DHEA for their bodies.) This effect of testosterone may be teased apart from the real effect of DHEA levels. In castrated rats, myosin heavy chain (MHC) expression in the soleus and extensor digitorum longus muscles is positively affected by nandrolone (nortestosterone decanoate) and exercise but not by nandrolone, alone. In conclusion, it appears that endogenous anabolic steroids are not essential for the ...

Abstract: The relationship between cranial morphology and diet has long been investigated in bats. Bats of the genus Myotis include insectivorous, facultatively piscivorous, and piscivorous species. We tested the hypothesis that facultatively piscivorous (five Myotis species) and piscivorous species (M. vivesi) present cranial morphological and functional changes with respect to insectivorous taxa (16 Myotis species). Cranial shapes in skull and mandible modules were described with four geometric landmark configurations in these dietary groups. Gape capacity was measured with the stretch factors for temporal and masseter muscles. Geometric configurations from two skull and two mandible shapes were analyzed to detect differences in cranial morphology in relation to diet. Differences in cranial morphology were found between piscivorous and insectivorous species involving the mandibular process where masticatory muscles are attached. Linear regression analysis of Procrustes distances and gape ...
A male term infant of 39 weeks gestation was born via spontaneous vaginal delivery. Pregnancy was unremarkable with no maternal health concerns. Labor was uneventful with no instrumentation or resuscitation required. Apgar scores were 9 at 1 minute and 9 at 5 minutes. Birth weight was 2.675 kg (3rd-10th percentile). The infant was noted to have limited mouth opening and he developed grunting, drooling, and mild respiratory distress that resolved with oral suctioning. No intervention was required other than intermittent suctioning.. Maternal and family history was unremarkable. Parents were nonconsanguineous and had 2 older, healthy children. Initial examination showed that the boys maximal mouth opening was 10 mm. No other physical abnormalities were noted. Computed tomography of the jaw at 3 months of age revealed no evidence of bony dysplasia, fusion, or dislocation. MRI of the jaw at 3 months of age revealed no signs of ankylosis with no abnormal signal within masseter muscles. MRI of the ...
sufferers, they are ineffective in stopping the painful side effects of teeth grinding, and do nothing for daytime tooth grinding.. Dentists have been injecting small doses of Botox directly into the large muscle that moves the jaw (masseter muscle) thereby successfully weakening it enough to stop involuntary grinding of the teeth and clenching of the jaw. Botox significantly relaxes the muscle, reducing the wear and tear on the teeth, due to grinding. Although it is not a cure for bruxism, Botox appears to effectively control uncomfortable symptoms better than a night guard for some patients, and treatment typically lasts for three to four months.. A downside emerged a number of years ago, though, showing evidence that Botox treatment may trigger a dramatic loss of bone density in the jaw. In a 2012 study in the journal Bone, Rabbits were injected with botulinum toxin on one side of the jaw and researchers found that after four weeks, the bone in the injected side was severely decreased. ...
A square jaw line is considered more of a masculine feature that gives the face a boxier shape, and it is for this reason that jaw line contouring has become a popular cosmetic procedure. Cosmetic jaw line contouring is typically performed on women. It has the ability to achieve a less prominent jaw line, create a harmonious balance with other facial features and soften the appearance.. People who have an enlarged masseter often have a square jaw line. The masseter is a muscle located in the jaw, responsible for moving the jaw when people clench or chew.. Some personal habits, such as excessive chewing of hard foods, chewing gum, or grinding teeth can cause a noticeable enlargement of the masseter ...

This Seattle Asian jaw reduction patient came to Dr. Thomas Lamperti looking to reduce the squared nature of your mandibular angle regions. She had had a botox injection in the area over a year ago and was interested in continuing her treatment. Dr. Lamperti placed botox in the inferior portion of the patients masseter muscles in the area closest to her mandibular angle. In the 1 month after photo you can see how the patient has a nicely reduced squareness to her jaw giving her much softer features. ...

The Myoware picks up a good strong electrical signal when sensors are placed close to the heart…but when placed on the abdomen did not really pick up anything I could see correlating to breathing or diaphragm movement. Either I had my sensors incorrectly placed or the circuit is not sensitive enough for this purpose. Adjusting the gain potentiometer on the Myoware PCB did change the gain response but didnt provide the response I was looking for - It was hoped that it would be possible to correlate diaphragm muscle movement with regular breathing.. I did notice that if I activated (flexed) my abdmoninal muscles electrical signals were definitely present and well detected…maybe I dont use my diaphragm much when I breathe in and out? I will have to investigate further.. ...
