One of the goals of this study was to learn the coverage, safety and logistics of a mass vaccination campaign against typhoid fever in children and adults using locally produced typhoid Vi polysaccharide (PS) and group A meningococcal PS vaccines in southern China. The vaccination campaign targeted 118,588 persons in Hechi, Guangxi Province, aged between 5 to 60 years, in 2003. The study area was divided into 107 geographic clusters, which were randomly allocated to receive one of the single-dose parenteral vaccines. All aspects regarding vaccination logistics, feasibility and safety were documented and systematically recorded. Results of the logistics, feasibility and safety are reported. The campaign lasted 5 weeks and the overall vaccination coverage was 78%. On average, the 30 vaccine teams gave immunizations on 23 days. Vaccine rates were higher in those aged ≤ 15 years (90%) than in adolescents and young adults (70%). Planned mop-up activities increased the coverage by 17%. The overall vaccine

The plans outline the need to identify suitable locations for mass vaccination centres and the need to determine how many people can be vaccinated per day and for how long. Now more documents from different regions have come to light, revealing the same overall strategy. The first document, entitled Contingency Plan For Mass Vaccination And Treatment, originates from the Leicestershire Local Resilience Forum (LRF), a multi agency group consisting of the emergency services, local authorities, and local health trusts as well as the Environment Agency. The document dated January 2008 states: When the general population is threatened or affected by a medical epidemic, mass vaccination of the public may be necessary. The public version of the plan states that the locations of the vaccine centers have been omitted. THE LOCATION OF VACCINATION AND TREATMENT CENTRES IS SENSITIVE INFORMATION, AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH. THEY WOULD BE EXEMPT FROM FoIA REQUESTS UNDER SECTION 38 OF THE FREEDOM OF ...

Results: The vaccine coverage of the population was 74% and was higher in those under age 10 years. No life-threatening serious adverse events were reported. Adverse events occurred in less than 1% of all vaccine recipients and the main reactions reported were fever and local pain. The proportion of adverse events in Vi polysaccharide and hepatitis A recipients will not be known until the end of the trial when the code is broken. Throughout the vaccination campaign safe injection practices were maintained and the cold chain was not interrupted. Mass vaccination in slums had good acceptance. Because populations in such areas are highly mobile, settlement conditions could affect coverage. Systemic reactions were uncommon and local reactions were mild and transient. Close community involvement was pivotal for information dissemination and immunization coverage ...

As an international UN Volunteer specialized in communication, Catalin was one of the first people to be sent to Coxs Bazar to document the response of WHO Bangladesh. Prior to the escalation of this crisis, there were already established partnerships between WHO, the government and other health partners. With the massive influx of people from Myanmar, strategies had to be adapted to this critical situation, explains Catalin.. Among the many challenges that medical staff have to address are: poor nutrition, insufficient clean water and sanitation, risk of communicable diseases and issues related to reproductive health. Last September, WHO coordinated a mass vaccination campaign against measles and polio, immunizing more than 150,000 children. In October, this was followed by a one-month 700.000 mass vaccination campaign against cholera, supplemented by actions to improve hygiene conditions, sanitation and access to water - essential measures to prevent cholera outbreaks.. ...
In any mass vaccination campaign, those who are already immune are unlikely to get additional benefits from the vaccine, but remain at risk of adverse effects, he wrote.. In young people without risk factors, the rates of death and complications last winter from swine flu were very low and are similar to the risk of serious vaccine-associated adverse effects such as Guillain-Barré syndrome and anaphylaxis.. According to Prof Collignon, around 50 per cent of people who received the H1N1 vaccine in the Australian trial had mild to moderate systemic adverse effects and 1.7 per cent had adverse effects recorded as severe.. In children, 20 per cent had moderate to severe systemic adverse effects after receiving a single 15 microgram dose of vaccine.. It is very important that we make sure we do more good than harm with any vaccine, Prof Collignon said, calling for large, prospective long-term studies on the safety and efficacy of influenza vaccines before embarking on further mass immunisation ...

While the eradication of smallpox has long been documented, not many know the Chinese roots of this historic achievement. In this revelatory study, Mary Augusta Brazelton examines the PRCs public health campaigns of the 1950s to explain just how China managed to inoculate almost six hundred million people against this and other deadly diseases.. Mass Vaccination tells the story of the people, materials, and systems that built these campaigns, exposing how, by improving the nations health, the Chinese Communist Party quickly asserted itself in the daily lives of all citizens. This crusade had deep roots in the Republic of China during the Second Sino-Japanese War, when researchers in Chinas southwest struggled to immunize as many people as possible, both in urban and rural areas. But its legacy was profound, providing a means for the state to develop new forms of control and of engagement. Brazelton considers the implications of vaccination policies for national governance, from rural health ...

To react to an outbreak of a contagious disease that requires medication or vaccination, county health departments must set up and operate mass dispensing and vaccination centers, commonly known as points of dispensing (PODs), to treat residents who may be affected. Carefully planning these PODs before an event occurs is a difficult and important job. Simulation models can provide an accurate representation of resident flow through PODs, but are not convenient for public health professionals to access. Queueing theory provides a multitude of analytical models appropriate for various situations - so many models that it is often difficult to discern which model is correct for a particular circumstance. There are also some situations for which no models are available, particularly those involving batching and multiple servers. A complete set has been gathered of those models that are the most generalized, and hence useful for the widest range of applications. Where no appropriate model was ...

The period from September to December 2005 provided an unusual educational opportunity for public health planners in Palm Beach County, Florida (PBC), when a hurricane interrupted the influenza vaccination season. County health and school district officials had met during the last week of September to begin planning a school-located mass influenza vaccination (SLV) program for all elementary schools in the county, subject to approval by their principals. During October, school nurses had been trained to manage all elements of the program, and principals were making their final decision concerning possible participation of their school. The first schools were scheduled to begin vaccinating children November 1.. However, on October 24, Hurricane Wilma struck PBC and diverted all public health services to the management of this emergency. Hurricane Wilma was a Category 5 hurricane before landfall, the most intense hurricane recorded to date in the Atlantic basin.1 After the storm made landfall in ...

9 October 2020. This year it is even more important that people who are most at risk of flu have their free vaccination and the local NHS is reassuring those eligible there is plenty of time for everyone to book and get their flu jab.. GP practices and pharmacies are receiving batches of the vaccine during the flu season, and flu vaccination clinics are scheduled to coincide with these deliveries. This does mean some may have to wait longer than they would wish to attend flu clinics.. In past flu seasons, many of those eligible for the NHS funded flu vaccine got their flu jab in specially arranged clinics at their local surgery, pharmacy, the workplace or in the community. The COVID-19 pandemic means these venues will not be able to be used in the same way as before, including limits on the amount of people attending each vaccination session to maintain social distancing. Unfortunately, this has an impact on the speed at which people can be vaccinated.. There are also several types of flu ...

Blood pressure in cats is measured with the systolic value (upper number) representing the pressure in the blood vessels when the heart is contracting and the diastolic value (lower number) representing the pressure in the blood vessels when the heart relaxes.. Many cats exhibit a stress-induced, temporary spike in blood pressure that can be due to the anxiety of being in the veterinarians office. Thats why many factors have to be considered when deciding whether a cat has high blood pressure. A systolic pressure of less than 170 millimeters of mercury suggests that a cat does not have hypertension. However, a systolic pressure of 178 in an anxious cat who sat in the waiting room with barking dogs may require a repeat evaluation on another day under low stress conditions to accurately diagnose hypertension.. Untreated high blood pressure can cause retinal hemorrhage leading to blindness, and impaired cardiac and kidney function, just as with humans.. Unlike in humans, cats rarely suffer high ...

Three economic evaluations of pandemic influenza A (H1N1) vaccination campaigns in North America concluded that the mass vaccination campaigns would be, or were, highly cost-effective, if not cost-saving. This paper re-assesses each study's analysis and presents three arguments: 1) prediction of vaccine program cost-effectiveness is unrealistic, if not impossible, unless quality surveillance data is available; 2) even when surveillance data is available, vaccine cost-effectiveness calculations can still vary dramatically and need to undergo wider-ranging sensitivity analysis; 3) H1N1 vaccination campaigns in North America were likely not as cost-effective as previously thought. Several recommendations are then made for improving transparency, accuracy, portability, and sensitivity analysis in pharmacoeconomic studies more generally.   Key words: Pandemic, influenza, vaccination, immunization, cost-effectiveness, health economics, pharmaco-economics.

Since the 1940s mass vaccination programmes have formed important elements in the governmental provision of healthcare services to children. Collectively, they have reduced the incidence and severity of numerous childhood diseases. Yet, they have also been subject to moments of social anxiety and panic over safety issues, necessity and the reach of the nanny state. These issues remain as ever present today as they did in the 1940s. They speak to the wider historical development of vaccinations, their introduction in Britain and how the NHS became the central instrument for providing childhood vaccinations free of charge to the public. While mass vaccination pre-dated the NHS, the launch of the NHS coincided with the considerable increase in the types of diseases for which vaccination programmes were developed and introduced in Britain. Vaccinations against diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tuberculosis and polio were all provided to children by 1956 and as the century progressed so too ...
The Health Department continues to vaccinate residents against the flu, with another free H1N1 clinic slated for Friday, Health Director James Roosen told the board Wednesday. The flu clinic has been extremely complicated because we have got two different vaccines this year -- the live (H1N1) virus, mist and the seasonal flu, he said. We have had 3,600 people we have already vaccinated, roughly three times what we did last year. The Health Department is continuing to distribute H1N1 to primary care providers, Roosen said. Were getting it out there and (providers) are getting people vaccinated, he said. That has been a huge job, managing all these extra doses. Vaccines for seasonal flu were also provided earlier for middle schools in the county, with an estimated 2,200 doses given out, Roosen said. Preparing for Fridays mass vaccination clinic, the health director said there is a sufficient quantity for the public. Were geared -- the last time we did a mass vaccination, we vaccinated ...

EL PASO, Texas - Sreenath Chalil Madathil, Ph.D., assistant professor in industrial manufacturing and systems engineering (IMSE) at The University of Texas at El Paso, is working to streamline the process and ease the patient experience at COVID-19 vaccination clinics in the United States to ensure faster vaccine distribution.. Madathil led a team of UTEP faculty, staff and students who observed several of El Pasos drive-though and walk-in clinics in early 2021. The team identified areas that likely created bottlenecks, which produce delays and other issues. They used the information from their observations to develop simulation models to experiment with a clinics performance to further identify potential slowdowns, calculate resource utilization and reduce patient waiting time. We are truly pleased to have Dr. Madathils expertise informing COVID-19 vaccination clinic design and implementation, said Patricia Nava, Ph.D., interim dean of UTEPs College of Engineering. Update on vaccine interchangeability (vaccine mixing): The online booking system will now display which mRNA vaccine is being offered at each clinic. Residents are able to book appointments, or reschedule their second dose appointment (external link) and select a clinic offering either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine at the time of booking. This means that residents who received an mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) as their first dose, are able to choose to book an appointment to receive the same or a different mRNA vaccine for their second dose through our online booking system. This follows recent recommendations from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) (external PDF) and additional guidance from Ontarios Chief Medical Officer of Health regarding the interchangeability of mRNA vaccines. Still, there is a long way to go. It has to be shown that such a vaccine is both safe and effective in humans. Protecting mice is relatively easy. Protecting humans is another matter. There may be a lot of natural immunity to adenovirus 5 that could interfere with the efficacy of the vaccine, which might require a move to another serotype or vector. Not an insurmountable problem but one that takes time. The safety issue isnt trivial when hundreds of millions or even billions might be vaccinated in a pandemic setting. A risk of death of only one in a million, while very favorable in the risk-risk trade-off calculus, might be a significant psychological barrier if in the first weeks of a mass immunization campaign the public sees several dozen deaths related to vaccination. Finally there is the problem of scaling up to produce adequate amounts of vaccine. This will be easier for this kind of vaccine than an inactivated whole virus one, but wont be trivial ...

Last month, emergency vaccination clinics were held every weekend in Wales, the epicenter of the outbreak. Immunization drives also have started elsewhere in the country, with officials aiming to reach 1 million children aged 10 to 16.. This is the legacy of the Wakefield scare, said Dr. David Elliman, spokesman for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, referring to a paper published in 1998 by Andrew Wakefield and colleagues that is widely rejected by scientists.. That work suggested a link between autism and the combined childhood vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella, called the MMR. Several large scientific studies failed to find any connection, the theory was rejected by at least a dozen major U.K. medical groups and the paper was eventually retracted by the journal that published it.. Britains top medical board stripped Wakefield of the right to practice medicine in the U.K., ruling that he and two of his colleagues showed a callous disregard for the children in the ...

Find your vaccination clinic in Stockholm. Vaccination is mainly the process of developing and strengthening the bodys immunity by exposing it to bacteria and viruses. Most children who are exposed in environments where they are allowed to play outside in the dirt are healthier compared to those who were raised in a restricted and overly sterile environment. There is a saying that no one dies of being exposed to too much dirt but there are more cases of death when an individual is overly clean. The reason for this is that their antibodies are not able to properly develop to protect their bodys immune system.. There are two main controversies that encompass vaccination. First, parents refused their children from being vaccinated because of the additives and preservatives that goes with the inoculants that are proven to be toxic. Second, parents are concerned for their childrens safety because of the too many injections during one immunization schedule until 2 months. Another reason is that can ...
