The novel project is the first to attempt to quantify the persistence that cigarette advertising and other pro-smoking media messages have on consumers. The study is published online by the Journal of Adolescent Health. Researchers say the findings have important implications for policies that limit tobacco advertising and other efforts aimed at curbing youth tobacco use. We were surprised how long the influence of pro-smoking messages lasted, said Steven Martino, a study co-author and a psychologist at RAND, a nonprofit research organization. The results suggest that positive media messages about smoking are likely to influence behavior even if opportunities to smoke occur infrequently. The study involved 134 college students in Pittsburgh aged 18 to 24 who were given hand-held devices that allowed them to document their exposure to pro-smoking media messages during their normal routine over a three-week period. Participants included both nonsmokers and those who smoke either regularly or ...

Segmented media content rights management is described. A media device can receive segments of protected media content from media content streams that each include a different version of the protected media content. A media content file can be generated to include the segments of the protected media content that are sequenced to render the protected media content for viewing. A file header object can be instantiated in a file header of the media content file, where the file header object includes DRM-associated features, such as one or more DRM licenses, properties, and/or attributes that correspond to the media content file to provision all of the segments of the protected media content together.
An operation method of an electronic device is provided. The method includes acquiring a media contents sharing list which includes media contents retained by the electronic device and media contents retained by at least one other electronic device communicating with the electronic device, and transmitting the first media contents to the at least one other electronic device based on playback of first media contents retained by the electronic device within the media contents sharing list, and receiving the second media contents from the at least one other electronic device and outputting the received second media contents based on playback of second media contents retained by the at least one other electronic device within the media contents sharing list.
Background: Mental health-related stigma is widespread and has major adverse effects on the lives of people with mental health problems. Its two major components are discrimination (being treated unfairly) and prejudice (stigmatising attitudes). Anti-stigma initiatives often include mass media interventions, and such interventions can be expensive. It is important to know if mass media interventions are effective. Objectives: To assess the effects of mass media interventions on reducing stigma (discrimination and prejudice) related to mental ill health compared to inactive controls, and to make comparisons of effectiveness based on the nature of the intervention (e.g. number of mass media components), the content of the intervention (e.g. type of primary message), and the type of media (e.g. print, internet). Search methods: We searched eleven databases: the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL, The Cochrane Library, Issue 7, 2011); MEDLINE (OvidSP),1966 to 15 August 2011; ...

Recent events in North Africa have intensified speculations about the role of traditional mass media as well as communication technologies in shaping political events and cultures across the world. Media influence on policy, foreign or domestic, has been the subject of some research, but is not generally taken seriously in the relevant disciplines. We have discussed on this blog before that the lack of systematic research and acknowledgement of media influence on policymaking may be due to the indirect nature of this effect. Media do not necessarily influence policymakers directly, but may work through public opinion by shaping what people know and believe about foreign politics. Public opinion, embodied in predominant political views or in election results, can have considerable influence on policymakers that need approval from the electorate.. I recently had the honor of contributing a book review on media influence on foreign policymaking to the foreign policy journal IP Global Edition, ...

Media literate people understand that television is constructed to convey ideas, information and news from someone elses perspective. They understand that specific techniques are used to create emotional effects. They can identify those techniques and their intended and actual effects. They are aware that all media benefit some people and leave others out. They can pose and sometimes answer questions about who are the beneficiaries, who is left out and why. Media literate people seek alternative sources of information and entertainment. Media literate people use television for their own advantage and enjoyment. Media literate people know how to act. They are not acted upon. In that way, media literate people are better citizens.1. The New Mexico Media Literacy Project (NMLP) has designed a seven-step model to use when deconstructing media messages. The seven critical questions of the NMLP deconstruction model include:. ...

Mass media campaigns, whether they are used as a drug prevention or health promotion tool, tend to be based (explicitly or implicitly) on a number of psychological theories and models. These are summarised below.. Media campaigns that aim to prevent drug use by providing information are based on the health belief model (Glanz et al., 2002). Under this model, awareness about the severity of a health condition along with knowledge of the benefits of actions to avoid it is essential for healthy behaviour. Therefore, the provision of factual information about the negative effects and dangers of drugs is supposed to deter use.. The theory of reasoned action or planned behaviour (Ajzen, 1991) proposes that an individuals behavioural intentions have three constituent parts: the individuals attitude towards the behaviour, the social norms as perceived by the individual, and the perceived control over ones own behaviour. According to this model, drug use is a consequence of a rational decision ...

Applied Mass Communication Theory: A Guide for Media Practitioners bridges a review of theory to the contemporary work of media professionals. The book is organized into three units. The first, Mass Communication Theory and Research, provides a framework for constructing an undergraduate research project, which is often required for upper-level mass communication courses. The second, Mass Communication Theories, presents vital chronological information on the progression of theory in mass communication, including a model that integrates mass communication theories and shows how they relate to one another. Finally, Unit 3, Bridge to the Real World, provides information on media law, ethics, economics and mass media careers, effectively establishing a critical framework for students as they leave college and begin their first job.. America, but women and girls more specifically, is so consumed with having a perfect, skinny body. It is believed that mass media aids in encouraging these thoughts, thoughts of unrealistically thin body ideals, ideals generally unattainable for many females. Standards of thinness are seen in almost every image in the media; these images represent the sociocultural model of attractiveness. When females are constantly exposed to images like this, they are sent a message about how they must appear in order to be judged as attractive. In todays society, the Kardashians serve as an example of this. The media is continually displaying these girls in bathing suits or posing in magazines, women and girls who see these gorgeous, successful women are immediately going to wish to look like them. Recently, interestingly enough, all over the TV is the Kardashians new Quick Trim commercial. The commercial promotes Quick Trim, a new fast, weight loss supplement. These girls are ultimately promoting a ...

In accordance with an embodiment, described herein is a system and method for color beat display in a media content environment. A media device, operating as a client device, can receive and play media content provided by a media server, or another system or peer device. A user interface enables a user to select from a plurality of displayed media options to be played at the device, wherein each media option corresponds to a media content item, e.g., a song. During the playing of a selected media content, a visual display logic or component determines an audio beat, volume, or other characteristic of the playing media content, and uses this information to modify the visual display at the user interface, to match the audio beat, volume, or other characteristic, for example by synchronizing a variation in color, brightness, scale, transparency, or intensity of a particular region of the visual display.
In one embodiment, an apparatus referred to as an intelligent media content exchange (M-CE), comprises a plurality of line cards coupled to a bus. This paper identifies and analyses current dimensions of change in mass media communication and in particular changes in mass media news transmitted via the Internet. In comparison with traditional media such as newspapers, Internet mass media products rely increasingly on a hypertext structure and on the integration of different channels of communication (hypermedia). In addition, they seek to convey the impression of personal, almost private communication. Audiences are carefully targeted, and media products can be customised to the personal needs and preferences of individual consumers. Online news media are also more interactive, requiring choices by users who activate some links and ignore others, and allowing users to talk back to the producers and interact with other users. The life span of information is changing as information is published as news in increasingly shorter time spans. Reception patterns are also changing: television and radio broadcasts available on the Internet can be received

Media education has the potential to reduce these harmful effects through the process of educating children, adolescents, and adults about media. Media education is defined as the study and analysis of mass media. A media-literate public is able to decipher the purpose and message of media rather than accepting it at face value. With an educated understanding of media images and messages, users can recognize medias potential effects and make good choices about their and their childrens media exposure.. Media education represents a multifaceted approach to understanding and eliminating the negative impact of media images and messages on young people. At the same time, it allows the positive and prosocial uses of media to be explored and appreciated. Media education includes the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and produce media products. A media-educated person understands the following: all media messages are constructed; media messages shape our understanding of the world; individuals ...

In 2014, Denmark experienced a rapid decline in vaccination uptake for the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine after a successful introduction of the vaccine in 2009. Before the decline, the uptake of the first HPV vaccine was around 90% for girls born in the period 1998 to 2000, while it dropped to 54% for girls born in 2003. The decline followed negative public attention from 2013 coinciding with increasing suspected adverse-event reporting to the Danish Medicines Agency. The aim of this study is to describe the HPV-vaccination uptake, to quantify relevant HPV-related media coverage, and analyse the relation between media coverage and HPV-vaccination acceptance in Denmark in year 2009-2016. Three types of data were used for the analysis: Immunisation data from 243,415 girls, media coverage (8524 news items) and Google search activity. We used changes in the correlation between media coverage and vaccination uptake to identify a changing point in their relationship. The relationship before and after the

Reality mediatization is at present one of the most powerful processes which means new media influence almost all areas of individual and social life, including religious life as well. New media are very effective in occupying time and space and cause great transformation of one's life. Areas which are not unaffected by media influence include also education and religion which in particular way meet during catechesis where we do care about its effectiveness because it conditions one's happiness both earthly and eternal. Didactics is a great art and care about better and more effective teaching-learning process, also in catechesis. Today, in my view, this didactics must be convergent that is combine elements of good, traditional didactics with sensible use of new media which can raise the effectiveness of the process. Such didactics, also in catechesis, should make good use of media because pupils themselves are highly mediatized and thanks to convergent didactics we may address a ...

Downloadable! To what extent individual choices are influenced by media exposure? We try to provide evidence on this issue considering how the sales of lotto tickets are determined by the size of the top prize (the jackpot) compared to the amount of attention that media devote to the game. We use data on the Italian SuperEnalotto (2003- 2010) and estimate tickets sales in relation to the jackpot size and to several measures of lotto media coverage. To take into account that media attention may be affected by the amount of tickets sold we instrument media coverage with the availability of other newsworthy material (sport events and disasters). It emerges that media attention to the game is inversely related to the availability of other news. Two-Stage-Least Squares Estimations show that, given the jackpot size, players spend more on lotto when media attention to the game is higher.

Although these were produced in huge numbers, very few early examples survive, and even most known to be printed before about 1600 have not survived. Mass media plays a crucial role in information distribution and thus in the political market and public policy making. Theory predicts that information provided by mass media reflects the medias incentives to provide news to different types of groups in society, and affects these groups influence in policy-making. We use data on agricultural policy from 67 countries, spanning a wide range of development stages and media markets, to test these predictions. We find that, in line with theoretical hypotheses, public support to agriculture is strongly affected by the mass media. In particular, an increase in the share of informed voters, and a greater role of the private televisions in society is associated with policies which benefit the majority more: it reduces taxation of agriculture in poor countries and reduces subsidization of agriculture in rich countries, ceteris paribus. The evidence is also consistent with the hypothesis that increased competition in commercial media reduces transfers to
