By Daniel Buchman. Earthquakes. Floods. Mass shootings. Highly pathogenic strains of influenza. What do these disasters have in common? They all have the potential to cause massive levels of morbidity and mortality. Some of these situations happen quickly with immediate impact, like mass shootings. Others happen slowly with large numbers of casualties growing over time, such as pandemic influenza. In all situations, there are huge losses of life, unbearable suffering, and they can overwhelm hospitals, health systems, and communities. Hospitals refer to these mass casualty incidents as a Code Orange.. In Canada, and in many parts of the world, researchers, healthcare professionals, and members of the public have attempted to describe the relevant ethical values that underpin decision-making in planning for and during a mass casualty, particularly in the wake of experiences such as SARS and Hurricane Katrina. Some of these values include:. ...

Objectives: To describe the use of radiology in the emergency department (ED) in a trauma centre during a mass casualty incident, using a minimum acceptable care (MAC) strategy in which CT was restricted to potentially severe head injuries. Methods: We retrospectively studied the initial use of imaging on patients triaged to the trauma centre following the twin terrorist attacks in Norway on 22 July 2011. Results: Nine patients from the explosion and 15 from the shooting were included. Fourteen patients had an Injury Severity Score >15. During the first 15 h, 22/24 patients underwent imaging in the ED. All 15 gunshot patients had plain films taken in the ED, compared to three from the explosion. A CT was performed in 18/24 patients; ten of these were completed in the ED and included five non-head CTs, the latter representing deviations from the MAC strategy. No CT referrals were delayed or declined. Mobilisation of radiology personnel resulted in a tripling of the staff. Conclusions: Plain film ...
Im writing a review of a new Department of Justice report on mass casualty incidents, Preparing for the Unimaginable, based on lessons learned from Sandy Hook. It is all too timely, given the Orlando shootings. It is available on the NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness) web site - http://www.nami.org/cops. Unfortunately, probably because of NAMIs focus on families and individuals (none of NAMIs executives or directors comes from public safety), the report recommendations related to crisis intervention are poor. They repeat CISM myths and recommend Psychological First Aid for law enforcement even though it was not designed for responders or groups.. It was helpful to be taking Jeff Mitchells CISM instructor class in the midst of writing the review. He guides instructors to understand how to answer critics with solid information. More to come.. ...

A multi-casualty incident (MCI) is defined as a single geographically focused event, which produces casualties of a sufficient number and severity that special operations and organizations are required at the scene.. There are special problems that emergency workers encounter when responding to an MCI. Due to the special circumstances, the Washoe County Health District works with regional first responders, healthcare professionals and non-profit organizations to develop a regional MCI plan. The purpose of the plan is to provide the guidelines necessary to effectively, efficiently and safely manage MCIs. Get more information on the District Board of Healths Multi-Casualty Incident Plan for our area.. ...

DEVELOPING STORY http://www.rt.com/usa/311368-mass-shootout-brooklyn-police/ This is a fluid story. SM reports state that at least 11 people shot (unconfirmed) and one fatality (unconfirmed).
What also could have contributed to the number of infections was the devastation to the medical system that happened during the tornado as well. The main hospital was damaged and several off-site clinics were set-up so the above news piece surmises that wounds may not have been adequately treated (which would be serious irrigation.) This is understandable considering what the town was dealing with ...
Mass Casualty/Preventable Deaths/Bleeds/ Tourniquets - posted in Survival / First Aid: Hi Folks, I wanted to address things that you might find in a dealing with a mass casualty event like the recent Paris attacks. In such an event where so many people are injured, dying and dead the regular local emergency services will absolutely be overwhelmed. So for every prepared citizen and I consider anyone involved in EDC to be a prepared citizens by the nature of what EDC is. We nee...

Objectives: Metropolitan areas must be prepared to manage large numbers of casualties related to a major incident. Most US cities do not have adequate trauma center capacity to manage large-scale mass casualty incidents (MCIs). Creating surge capacity requires the distribution of casualties to hospitals that are not designated as trauma centers. Our objectives were to extrapolate MCI response...
SALT, which stands for Sort, Assess, Lifesaving interventions, Treatment and/or transport is the four step process for responders to manage mass casualty incidents proposed by the National Association of EMS Physicians as part of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sponsored project to use the best available science and expert opinion to develop a standard guideline for mass casualty management [2 ...
Abraham Lincoln once said, Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.6 Are we prepared? Its not a question of if an emergency will occur but when and how bad. The events of September 11, 2001; hurricanes Katrina, Gustaf, and Ike; and the earthquake in Haiti underscore the urgent need for federal, state, regional, and public health care agencies to respond in unison and to respond effectively to such emergencies.7 As a first responder with the Disaster Medical Assistance Team CA-6, I concern myself with the immediate casualties in the impacted area and in our mobile receiving center, as well as in the primary receiving medical center. The mission is to stabilize and transport the patients to the appropriate medical facility having the best chance of saving them. That being said, resuscitation is really a matter of whatever it takes to save lives. In an event where multiple casualties are present, bystanders may, in fact, be the first responders ...

The four-day EMO course provides classroom lectures, extensive hands-on training, and culminates with a hands-on practical exercise that allows responders to implement the emergency-response knowledge and skills learned during the course.. Below are some, but not all, of the critical skill sets learned during this training program:. ...
An overview of disaster and mass casualty triage, the philosophies that have shaped current triage strategies, and the two most common triage systems in the U.S., SALT (Sort-Assess-Lifesaving Interventions-Treatment/Transport) and START (Simple Triage and Rapid Transport). Virtual Mentor is a monthly bioethics journal published by the American Medical Association.
Biodosimetry is a method for measuring the dose of radiation to individuals using biological markers such as chromosome damage. Following mass casualty events, it is important to provide this information rapidly in order to assist with the medical management of potentially exposed casualties. Currently, the gold standard for biodosimetry is the dicentric chromosome assay, which accurately estimates the dose from the number of dicentric chromosomes in lymphocytes. To increase throughput of analysis following a largescale mass casualty event, this assay has been adapted for use on the imaging flow cytometer. This chapter describes the methods for the identification and quantification of mono-and multicentric chromosomes using the imaging flow cytometer.. ...
Electronic Mass Casualty Assessment and Planning Scenarios (EMCAPS) Version 1.0, is a scalable program intended to support emergencypreparedness planning efforts at multiple levels. This computerized modeling simulation program, which allows users to manipulate key scenariobasedinput variables that best reflect the region or locale of interest, was developed to have broad application across emergency management andpublic health fields as part of a catastrophic events preparedness planning process. The program then provides output data which can be used toassess and tailor response capabilities for specific jurisdictions, organizations, and health care systems.. EMCAPS Version 2.0 (V2.0) seeks to make the program more accessible, interactive, and instructive. This new version would provide users greater flexibility in tailoring a scenario to their particular location, with additional scenarios to choose from, as well as more variables for manipulationwithin each scenario ...

Author(s): Leaming, James M; Adoff, Spencer; Terndrup, Thomas E | Abstract: Introduction: We sought to develop and test a computer-based, interactive simulation of a hypothetical pandemic influenza outbreak. Fidelity was enhanced with integrated video and branching decision trees, built upon the 2007 federal planning assumptions. We conducted a before-and-after study of the simulation effectiveness to assess the simulations ability to assess participants beliefs regarding their own hospitals mass casualty incident preparedness. Methods: Development: Using a Delphi process, we finalized a simulation that serves up a minimum of over 50 key decisions to 6 role-players on networked laptops in a conference area. The simulation played out an 8-week scenario, beginning with pre-incident decisions. Testing: Role-players and trainees (N=155) were facilitated to make decisions during the pandemic. Because decision responses vary, the simulation plays out differently, and a casualty counter quantifies

Introduction: Situational awareness (SA) is essential for maintenance of scene safety and effective resource allocation in mass casualty incidents (MCI). Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) can potentially enhance SA with real-time visual feedback during chaotic and evolving or inaccessible events. The purpose of this study was to test the ability of paramedics to use UAV video from a simulated MCI to identify scene hazards, initiate patient triage, and designate key operational locations. Methods: A simulated MCI, including fifteen patients of varying acuity (blast type injuries), plus four hazards, was created on a college campus. The scene was surveyed by UAV capturing video of all patients, hazards, surrounding buildings and streets. Attendees of a provincial paramedic meeting were invited to participate. Participants received a lecture on SALT Triage and the principles of MCI scene management. Next, they watched the UAV video footage. Participants were directed to sort patients according to SALT ...

Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) conduct operational, peacekeeping or humanitarian missions. A key-support element, CAF medical personnel must be ready to triage and manage mass casualty incidents, working together to save lives. In order to maintain clinical competency and be ready to deploy on operations, medical personnel take part in training programs such as the Advanced Military Trauma Resuscitation Program (AMTRP), a five-day program that targets medical officers, physician assistants, nursing officers and medical technicians. AMTRP was originally conceived to provide pre-deployment training for medical personnel going to Afghanistan where, for the first time in decades, they were treating high volumes of severe trauma. The training is conducted by both Canadian Forces instructors and civilian guest speakers, and includes a mix of didactic content, skills labs and hi-fidelity simulation scenarios. The program offers a unique opportunity to conduct multi-disciplinary team training with an emphasis on
I personally believe that the key to making the world safer is preparedness. Unfortunately much of what went wrong on 9/11, particularly the rescue personnel dying was a lack of training. The government is only slowly understanding this. It is not the job of the common citizen to worry about what people in other countries are doing. Therefore the common citizen shouldnt be dealing with that. What the common citizen needs is a better process in which they can be prepared just in case anything like that happens again. That means better communications than the archaic radio system FDNY uses. Better training for MCIs (mass casualty incidents). Better equipment, for example gas masks and Mark 1 kits (two syringes 1 of atropine, 1 of pralidoxime chloride, used to counter nerve gas attacks). These things are unfortunately necessary for more people to have and be familiar with. In my mind keeping people safer, and protecting lives has to start with us ourselves looking out for people and taking the ...
Dr Bawa-Garbas situation has roused concern and/or outrage internationally.[1-4] Oliver has, as he always does, has captured many of its important features.[5 6] Taking his points in this and his previous article in order, I have a number of comments. THE GMC. I shall not comment on the role of the GMC - others, including Oliver and Ross,[7-9] have already been eloquent on this topic. DOCTORS CONTRACTS. I am not entirely familiar with the 2016 junior doctor contract, but I believe that the previous contract contained a clause about doctors being required to do non-emergency work in premium time in an emergency - this covered requiring doctors to do extra work to back-fill following an emergency, such as a train crash or other mass casualty incident. However, there was a clear limit to this - I believe it was until 48 hours after the incident. After this period, employers were expected to contract for any additional work, and doctors could not be required to do extra work. Clearly, any ...
Over the course of two days in mid-August, more than 95 people in New Haven, Connecticut, overdosed.. Their drug, however, wasnt heroin. It was synthetic cannabinoids, commonly sold as K2, Spice, or potpourri.. The fallout from the incident was so widespread that experts have referred to it as a mass casualty incident.. More than that, it has become a symbol of the dangers of a class of drugs that officials in the United States have little understanding of and even less control over abbyy.. In nearby Baltimore, a new study by the University of Marylands Center for Substance Abuse Research (CESAR) published this month articulates many of the problems with identifying and treating synthetic cannabinoid overdoses.. NEBRASKA MAN CLAIMS MISSED WEST NILE DIAGNOSIS LEFT HIM PARALYZED. Researchers studied urine samples of patients with suspected synthetic cannabinoid overdose at two different hospitals, the University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus in Baltimore and the University of ...

Hello everyone! Im working on my PhD on a large scale telemedicine project concerning the mobile live management of mass casualty incidents, and since it is half medical half IT I would really need some support. The project is under supervision of the National Emergency Medicine Board of the Ministry of Health in Romania. I do have a presentation page (in my own language), but since it also needs some assistance you may find a brief presentation of it all (including screenshots and
As I sat down I met a lovely couple from Germany who have been living in the Midwest for years and just moved here and were having problems also. We talked about how much we hated to come to the DMV and that NY, NJ and CT are the worse. He said that when he lived in Missouri that it was a pleasure to go to the DMV and they were in and out within 15 minutes. That would NEVER happen here so dream on I said! After I filled out another form that the lady told me I filled out wrong she told me to go back to the lady that was originally taking care of me. She handed me back all the paperwork except for my drivers license. I asked her if I could please have it back and she then said, I havent seen it, I dont have it, you must have it. OK now there is actual flames and fire shooting out of my head and I am MAD beyond all belief. Good thing I had some Ativan with me because I took some of that to calm me down and prevent a mass casualty incident from occuring. It was then my turn with the lady and I ...

Some metro parents are still reeling after learning a student at Edmond North was reportedly planning a mass-casualty event. But authorities said the quick actions of the students parents, peers and professionals stopped the potential tragedy.. Despite the fact that it ended somewhat peacefully, some parents said they are still unsettled.. Nina Romano said her son attends Edmond North High School and shes still shaken up over Fridays threat.. Being a parent, you dont want to think about having to bury your children. You dont. I mean, thats your worst nightmare, she said.. Friday morning Edmond police said they discovered evidence that a 16-year-old student was in what they called the building and testing phase with fuses, had blueprints of explosives and quoted others who carried out school mass-casualty events.. Why? Does anybody know why this happened? Why was he thinking about doing that? Thats the biggest question, Romano said.. Investigators said they are still trying to figure ...
There are also studies on twins which show that heredity is accounting for about 30 percent of the differences responding to trauma. Identical twins are much more likely to develop this stress disorder than the fraternal twins. Another research has looked into the role of inherited mental disorders, brain differences or tendencies of addiction.. An unusual research avenue is the contribution of our immune systems to the development of the symptoms of PTSD or if it has also a big role in this development. Prior studies showed that people who have been diagnosed with PTSD as compared to individuals without PTSD suggest that their differences in their genes in relation to inflammation, plays a role.. Therefore, there is a tendency that PTSD can be acquired genetically, however, there is no positive result as researchers are still going on progress of having some clues as to what may predict resilience and risk.. One thing to keep in mind about PTSD, is that even though it may or may not be genetic, ...
More recently, you spent six weeks in Afghanistan. Could you describe the work you were doing?. The hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan, has been running for just over a year. Its a 50-bed hospital, but there are two extra wards that can be used if theres a mass casualty event such as a suicide bombing or roadside bombing. The trauma centre is open to anyone who needs the service regardless of their politics or religion About 90 per cent of the injuries we saw were orthopaedic-related traumas, and 10 per cent were chest and abdominal injuries. (We couldnt take head or face injuries under our admission criteria). There were a lot of gunshot wounds, just ordinary people shot accidentally. Unfortunately, a big proportion of patients were children or shepherds or others who had walked on landmines. Even though the hospital is new, its very well known, far and wide. People would sometimes travel for three or four days after being wounded in shootouts quite far away. It would be snowing and the ...
Every health system faces variable demand on its resources. In addition to a long-term increase in patient volume, there may be short-term increases in demand for emergency healthcare services, or surge.1 When the primary healthcare and outpatient systems are not functioning effectively, the EDs become the destination for patients who have no other access to primary healthcare.2. A number of actions can be taken to manage a catastrophic surge. These include discharging stable ED and inpatients, cancelling elective surgeries, opening alternate care areas, and calling in standby or off-duty staff. For such a system to work effectively, a clear plan must define who has authority to initiate such a cascade. In addition, the trigger points that activate these costly measures should be specified. The activation of a local or regional disaster plan may have residual health service delivery implications for days or longer. These measures, however, have not been rigorously investigated or consistently ...
The intensity of attacks in besieged areas near Damascus and Homs has increased dramatically once more, leading to significant increases in mass casualty influxes. Just today, Friday, multiple airstrikes again hit East Ghouta, an area of besieged towns near Damascus. Medics in the area are reporting many casualties, including women and children, but the tally of todays war-wounded and war-dead is not yet complete.
When mass casualty incidents occur - shootings, earthquakes, multiple car pile ups - first responders can easily be overwhelmed by the sheer number of victims. When every second counts, monitoring all the victims in a chaotic situation can be difficult. Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energys Pacific Northwest National Laboratory developed a stick-on sensor that measures and tracks a patients vital signs to help first responders quickly triage, treat and transport the injured.. The patent-pending VitalTag is a low-cost suite of sensors that detects, monitors and wirelessly transmits vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate and other metrics such as blood oxygen levels, shock index and data from a single-lead electrocardiogram.. VitalTag adheres to a patients sternum and connects seamlessly via Wi-Fi to securely transmit patient data to a mobile device or laptop in real time. Responders can view each patients medical status and location on an incident map. ...
The rapid spread of SARS-CoV2 throughout the world has put an unimaginable strain on the healthcare system. Patients are at risk of facing the consequences of not enough ventilators, which in dealing with respiratory failure is fatal. This is a last resort, emergency-only device for use if ever faced with a critical shortage of ventilators. The concept of ventilator sharing to our knowledge was first written by Dr. Neyman and Dr. Irvin in 2006 (Ac Emergency Medicine 2006). They demonstrated that by using T-tubes and adapters, a ventilator circuit could be divided such that four simulated patients could share a single ventilator in emergency circumstances. Although only simulated in the original article, this technique was successfully used by Dr. Menes in the 2017 Las Vegas shooting mass casualty incident. This technique saved the lives of patients, buying time until more ventilators could arrive. Some hospitals do not have the T-tubes or other parts readily available to setup a ventilator for ...

In the second year of the Preparedness Summit Podcast series, take a deeper dive into the subject of preparedness with some of the most fascinating Summit speakers. Michael Frogel, Co-Principal Investigator for the New York City Pediatric Disaster Coalition shares his experience planning for a pediatric mass casualty event after the failed bombing attempt on Times Square in 2010. Download the full podcast here.. Youre here at the Preparedness Summit to talk about the attempted attack on Times Square, had the bomb actually detonated, what would be your role? We have a Pediatric Disaster Coalition and our main goal is to prepare New York City for a potential mass causality event involving very large numbers of children. Unfortunately, if this bomb had gone off, or fortunately that it didnt, we would have had a catastrophic situation with hundreds if not thousands of injured children. This bomb was placed right across from a theater where the Lion King was playing. There are usually 1,000 kids in ...

University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, mass casualties: the shootings in Las Vegas have locked the national attention and horrified everyone watching. Ive no interest in the politics of the scene, and am not here to discuss the motivations, terrors, opposing views, or potential societal consequences of this nightmare.. This site celebrates authentic medicine, and advocates for physicians at their best, doing what they and we all want them to do. At this writing, 59 are dead and many others wounded, some grievously. There are a plethora of decent internet stories that can give you the numbers of surgeons, ER docs, nurses, trauma bays, shuffling, and adaptations that have gone on to handle what must have felt like a tidal wave to the folks at the back of the ambulances. Ive only worked in small ERs in rural areas, which can get dicey sometimes, but mass casualties is something we give occasional lip service too, a virtual drill every couple of years, and never, ever expect to see. This course is delivered in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and applies to all workers or members of the community who may be required to provide oxygen, advanced resuscitation or advanced first aid in the event of an emergency, until the arrival of medical or other assistance. Providing effective, lifesaving first aid interventions requires instruction and practical training. This is especially true when it relates to potentially fatal illnesses and injuries such as those that involve cardiac arrest, severe bleeding, multiple casualty incidents etc. These situations carry a risk of further injury to the casualty and the first aider and it is imperative that training occurs to be able to know what to do when confronted with a real-life incident.. This course aims to develop the skills and knowledge and most importantly the confidence, to coordinate and manage the response, and provide advanced first aid in a challenging environment, in order to preserve life, prevent ...

Source: Washington Post, July 28, 2003. OPINION. Unready for Anthrax By Lawrence M. Wein and Edward H. Kaplan. In any attempted terrorist attack against this country, smallpox and anthrax would be the only two biological agents capable of causing mass casualties. And while the government has invested considerable effort in planning for a potential smallpox attack, no equivalent plan exists for anthrax.. In a recently completed study, we looked into various emergency responses to an airborne anthrax attack and concluded that the United States is woefully unprepared. Two pounds of weapons-grade anthrax dropped on a large American city could result in more than 100,000 deaths, even if early cases were successfully diagnosed, antibiotics were distributed broadly and drug adherence was high. The reason for the catastrophic death toll: Not enough people would receive antibiotics quickly enough to prevent symptoms from developing, and those who developed symptoms would overwhelm the medical ...

Article] Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. 12(6):e357-e361, November 2011. (Format: HTML, PDF). Objective: Modern health care systems may be inadequately prepared for mass casualty respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation. Current health policy has focused on the stockpiling of emergency ventilators, though little is known about the performance of these ventilators under conditions of respiratory failure in adults and children. In this study, we seek to compare emergency ventilator performance characteristics using a test lung simulating pediatric lung injury.. Design: Evaluation of ventilator performance using a test lung.. Setting: Laboratory.. Interventions: None.. Measurements and Main Results: Six transport/emergency ventilators capable of adult/child application were chosen on the basis of manufacturer specifications, Autovent 3000, Eagle Univent 754, EPV 100, LP-10, LTV 1200, and Parapac 200D. Manufacturer specifications for each ventilator were reviewed and compared with ...

These days hospitals drill for mass casualty disasters like the explosions at Mondays Boston Marathon. But when it happened for real, the first response was disbelief. Then the victims began arriving. Doctors say they were confronted with the kinds of IED injuries that U.S. troops have gotten in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This weeks conference started off with an awesome Grand Rounds with Dr. Chris Colwell, Chief/Vice Chair at UCSF/Zuckerberg and a leader in EM/EMS/trauma. Dr. Colwell shared his firsthand experiences in the Columbine and Aurora Theater shootings and discussed mass casualty, disaster management, and lessons learned. He then gave great talks on high altitude illness and trauma sedation.. Next up was our last CPC of the year with Dr. Abe Feshazion (PGY2) and Dr. Linda Katirji who presented a great case, differential, and discussion of vertebral osteomyelitis/diskitis. This was followed by a pediatric abdominal ultrasound lecture by Dr. Marina Shpilko, and then, Dr. Steve Morgan (PGY3) presented his EBM project on anaphylaxis management. Lastly, Dr. Lauren McCafferty (PGY3) and Dr. Laura Throckmorton (PGY1) presented interesting cases/images for power (half) hour. Read More ...

Today, our government provides services for surviving veterans and their families, but it took the mass casualties of the Civil War to bring about this standard.
Trump initially approved such a proposal last June following Irans shoot-down of a US spy drone over its territory. He then called the strikes off, by his own account, just 10 minutes before the bombs and missiles were set to fly. The US president claimed at the time that he had done so because the loss of Iranian life would have been disproportionate. In reality, Washington calculated that the US strikes would be answered with Iranian attacks on US ships and bases in the region that would yield mass casualties among American troops. Apparently, the White House is now prepared to accept such a price.. The pretext for the proposed acts of US imperialist aggression is the September 14 attacks on Saudi oil facilities which knocked out half the kingdoms production and sent oil prices spiraling 20 percent in trading Monday.. As yet, Washington has produced not a shred of evidence substantiating its charge that Iran was responsible for the attacks. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo indicted Iran for ...
Q: Can you talk about your experiences in the aftermath of the bombings?. M.Y.: I was in the gym. I saw on the television that there had been a bombing. I knew that my partner Carl Hauser was on for trauma at Beth Israel, so I sent him a text message. And it goes to show you how much I under-estimated things, I said, I doubt that it is a mass casualty. But just in case, let me know if you want me to come in. Two minutes later, he sent me a text message that said, Come on in. They already had half a dozen people or so from the bombing in the emergency room. Everybody came together and worked in a way that I have never seen before. It functioned like a well-oiled machine.. Q: What was your role?. M.Y.: It was mostly as a surgical intensivist and a trauma surgeon. So most of what we did was stabilize patients. Because the wounds were mostly lower extremity, it was really the orthopedic surgeons and plastic surgeons and vascular surgeons that did most of the operating. There were a total of 25 ...
This fall, the vaxxed people will begin to die in large numbers and when they fall ill they can infect healthy people and other vaxxed people with deadly Biotoxins. Peoples panic will turn to terror and the vaxxed will erroneously blame the unvaxxed for the new pandemic which could be of Biblical proportions unless we change this trajectory. The vaxxed people are the real threat to mankind now because the viruses theyll be shedding will be far more deadly than the original one. The vaxxed now have the potential to be Super Spreaders of deadly diseases which their immune systems can no longer fight off.. But if the probabilties of a successful attack are uncertain, the consequences of a terrorist success would be less so. Even without the Cheney warning, a new September 11 sized attack would have been devastating to the Obama administration. What Cheney is doing is upping the political ante. From a political point of view, Cheney is ensuring that Obama had better make pretty damned sure another mass casualty attack doesnt happen, or face an electoral apocalypse. That doesnt answer any of the questions about what actually will happen in the future. The sad fact is that nobody can really predict that. We can only do our best based on imperfect information and see what happens ...
Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) is a bacterial superantigen that binds the receptors in the APC/T cell synapse and causes increased proliferation of T cells and a cytokine storm syndrome in vivo. Exposure to the toxin can be lethal and cause significant pathology in humans. The lack of effective therapies for SEB exposure remains an area of concern, particularly in scenarios of acute mass casualties. We hypothesized that blockade of the T cell costimulatory signal by the CTLA4-Ig synthetic protein (abatacept) could prevent SEB-dependent pathology. In this article, we demonstrate mice treated with a single dose of abatacept 8 h post SEB exposure had reduced pathology compared with control SEB-exposed mice. Abatacept-treated mice showed significant reductions in body weight between days 4 and 9, whereas mice treated with abatacept showed no weight loss for the duration of the study, suggesting mitigation of SEB-induced morbidity. Histopathology and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated that ...

The Victorians used Spotify a lot because it was the easiest way to distribute those bicycles with the huge front wheels. Its usage tailed off after the Great Hat Dispute of 1875: the Victorians early experiments with wearable technology resulted in a large number of mass casualties. The person who brought Spotify back into public popularity was Howard Donald from Take That, although I cant explain why for legal reasons ...

My son was a casualty of Covid 19. It was not listed as cause of death on his Death Certificate, nor will it ever be recognized as being even remotely related. Covid accelerated his beating drum of doom. My son lived on the fringes, a disenfranchised man, incorrectly labeled by the judicial system; he struggled with bipolar and alcoholism his entire adulthood. He surrendered his life on May 15, 2020, coinciding with the first surge of Covid cases.. My son lived his life in the shadows. He was destined to a life on the outside with his mental health label -- always looking in. It was a burden he could not bear, as a loving, big-hearted person who was ostracized from society for a crime he did not commit. The pain exceeded his ability to cope. With the onset of Covid, his life went from a weak ray of hope for a future to no chance in hell. He plunged into the darkness, not a star or a beam of moonshine on his horizon. Quickly he succumbed, as his life force was already precariously close to the ...
The report presents an assessment of the requirements for the survival of personnel associated with merchant vessel casualties on the Great Lakes. Analyses of actual man-in-the-water casualties and reviews of selected literature pertinent to cold and in-water survival were used as bases for developing simulated casualty profiles and for constructing GERTS networks. Case analyses, casualty simulations, and analytical techniques were used to assess survival requirements. (Author)*Great Lakes
