Despite registering to vote in Maryland in 2006, Krish Vignarajah has voted just once in Maryland. In 2016, she voted in the general after skipping the primary. She registered to vote in D.C. in 2010 and participated in four elections there from 2010 through 2014.. In order to remain eligible to run for governor, Vignarajah claims incredibly that she remained a legally registered voter in Maryland. Even as she cast ballots elsewhere and claimed a D.C. address on her voter registration application, she was never purged from the rolls in Maryland.. This presents a series of real problems for Vignarajah. To put it bluntly, if she really lived in Maryland all the time and her D.C. apartment was just a crash pad as she now says, why did she fraudulently claim that she lived in D.C. on her 2010 voter application? Alternatively, if she was honest on her application, how can she claim that she has always maintained her Maryland residency?. Additionally, if she was always a Maryland resident, why ...
Until May 15, 2019, Rule 2-231 of the Maryland Rules permitted members of a class to sue or be sued via parties representing the entire class if certain requirements were met. Thus, like the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, Maryland rules permitted plaintiff class actions as well as defendant class actions. But, unlike federal practice, Maryland courts have no mechanism for interlocutory appeals of class certification determinations by the trial court, and Maryland law does not permit the Court of Appeals to create such a mechanism by rule. Most class action lawsuits involve a class of plaintiffs suing named defendants, but sometimes a plaintiff or plaintiffs will sue a class of defendants in federal courts or other state courts. A defendant class action had never before been certified in Maryland state courts, prior to Yang v. G & C Gulf, Inc., Case No. 403885V, where the Circuit Court for Montgomery County (Rubin, J.) certified a defendant class in January 2018. Morgan Lewis represents one of ...

BALTIMORE, MD (December 9, 2020) - The Maryland Department of Labor (Labor) today announced that according to guidance from the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL), the federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) and Pandemic Unemployment Emergency Compensation (PEUC) unemployment insurance programs program created by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act will expire in Maryland on December 26.. With these two federal unemployment insurance programs set to expire at the end of this month and the COVID-19 pandemic being far from over, it is crucial that Congress puts partisan politics aside and passes an additional financial relief package for the sake of people struggling not only here in Maryland, but across the entire country, said Governor Larry Hogan.. While the law states that the programs end on Thursday, December 31, USDOL only allows states to pay claimants for a full week of unemployment. In Maryland, a full week is from Sunday to Saturday. Marylands PTA and the national organization are feuding, with battles over management, alleged hostile work environments and local leader elections.. The Maryland PTA filed for an injunction and temporary restraining order against National PTA in early September to stop the national group from taking over and reorganizing the state chapter.. The Maryland PTA had been put on probation three months earlier for high turn-over among board members as a result of a hostile board environment and an assumed directive of loyalty to the Maryland PTA president rather than to Maryland PTA and its members.. In late August, the national organization said Marylands chapter needed to be restructured because of a failure to comply with its probationary status and a national Standards of Affiliation Policy. Under restructuring, National PTA can ask for the state associations funds, assets, physical property and access to technology accounts. And Maryland PTA can no longer contact its local PTAs or use ...

Teton Village, WY - (SBWIRE) - 02/27/2017 - After reviewing new and growing evidence on health risks of wireless radiation, the Maryland State Childrens Environmental Health and Protection Advisory Council (CEHPAC) issued a Report advising the Department of Education to recommend local school districts reduce classroom wireless radiation exposures by providing wired-rather than wireless-internet connections. CEHPACs health experts include Governor appointed pediatricians, Maryland State House/Senate appointees and representatives of the Department of Education and Department of Health. The Council cited the recent US National Toxicology Program (NTP) findings of increased rates of rare malignant cancers in animals, as well as childrens unique vulnerability to the radiation. While several countries, such as France, Israel and Cyprus, already have such protective measures in place, this action to issue recommendations to reduce classroom wireless exposures is the first by an expert state body ...

In 1884 the New York, Philadelphia, and Norfolk Railroad, a subsidiary of the powerful Pennsylvania system, extended its line south through the Eastern Shore of Virginia. For decades the Eastern Shore had remained disconnected from the rapidly advancing railroad network on the Atlantic coast, a region distinctly Southern in its cultural landscape and seemingly frozen in time. The arrival of the railroad altered the geography of the Eastern Shore in fundamental ways and prompted unforeseen changes in the peninsulas cultural and natural worlds. This essay examines what happened when one of the largest railroad companies in the nation came into a southern community and connected it to the modern network of rail and commerce. We consider the Eastern Shore a test case or laboratory for understanding the development of a modern landscape in the South and the social, cultural, and environmental changes that came with the railroad.

The department looked at statistics from the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry dating to 1985. In addition to Ewing sarcoma, the agency looked at other types of cancer rates: liver, brain, bone, lung, and breast cancers. It compared cancer rates in Washington County and Canon-McMillan School District against statewide rates.. In a report released Tuesday, the state concluded that rates of Ewing sarcoma werent consistently or statistically significantly higher than expected in either Washington County or the school district.. The study did find that between 2005 and 2017, rates of Ewing sarcoma were three times higher than expected in the school district. The rare tumor mainly affects young people and can be fatal.. The authors said the number of cases was so small - just three instances of Ewing sarcoma in the district over those years - that the higher-than-expected rates werent statistically significant.. Only about 200 cases of the tumor are reported in the U.S. each year.. Jian-Min Yuan, a ...

Baltimore, Md. - Beginning in the Fall 1999, The School of Nursing introduced its new Masters degree specialty in Nurse Midwifery. Following its recent pre-accreditation from the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM), the School of Nursing becomes Marylands only university offering such a program.. There are more than 200 midwives throughout Maryland, but until now, there has been no recognized program within the state, said Alice Neily, spokesperson for the Maryland Chapter of the ACNM. Historically known as an alternative childbirth provider, nurse midwives also offer such services as Pap smears, breast and pelvic examinations and womens health counseling and screening, as well as preconception and maternity care for women at low-risk for complications during pregnancy. In many states, including Maryland, CNMs also have prescription writing privileges. Barbara R. Background: Prior investigations have documented disparities in the supply side of Marylands Medical Marijuana program. Initially a disproportionate share of licenses to cultivate and distribute medical marijuana were awarded to Non-Hispanic White owned businesses. The state has implemented measures to ameliorate the inequity by prioritizing license awards to qualified minority owned businesses. Objectives: The objective of this study is to examine the racial and income characteristics of communities where licensed dispensaries are located. We quantify the racial and income characteristics of communities where Maryland medical cannabis dispensaries are located and explore whether Maryland medical marijuana dispensaries disproportionately locate in high-income, majority-White zip codes. Method: Using data from the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission and the American Communities Survey, we create geocodes for each of the operating dispensaries as of December 2019. We examine the distribution of ...

OCEAN CITY - State environmental officials this week announced a dramatic change in horseshoe crab harvest regulations along the Atlantic coast of Maryland including Ocean City and its coastal bays in a two-prong effort to preserve the prehistoric crabs and the migratory birds that feed off their eggs.. Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) fisheries service officials this week announced they are implementing new horseshoe crab regulations including a two-to-one, male to female harvest ratio, which will become effective April 1. Prior to the action taken by the DNR announced on Tuesday, there was no sex ratio limit.. While the action taken Tuesday does create new limitations on horseshoe crabs, it does avoid a more draconian solution. DNR officials are implementing the harvest ratio limit after conducting a technical analysis and reviewing public input on a range of management options including a closure of the entire horseshoe crab fishery. As a result, commercial watermen throughout ...
