The EurasiaNet piece (and the report it cites) on early marriage in Tajikistan, as well as other similar pieces on underage marriage elsewhere in the world, points to an important issue. Equally important is the ability to see the practice of early marriage as motivated by more than just religion or culture. But early marriage is not the only consequence of strained economic times. What is missing from this discussion is that marriage has often been traditionally as much an economic contract between two individuals and two families as a religious contract or a bond of love within legal parameters for reproduction and social harmony. Thus, poverty cannot only lead to young girls being married off to much older men but also women, over the marriageable legal age of a particular country, marrying far older men, entering polygamous relationships (which the Eurasia Foundation report notes) or even temporary marriages. Marriage, for many women facing financial burdens or uncertainty, becomes seen as a ...
Child marriage in the United States refers to a marriage in the United States where at least one party is under the age of 18.[1] Between 2000 and 2015, over 200,000 minors were legally married in the United States.[2] The vast majority of child marriages were between a child and an adult.[3][2] The majority of married children were girls.[2] As of January 2019, 48 out of 50 U.S. states have exceptions in their laws which allow children to marry (In 2018, Delaware[4] and New Jersey[5] became the first two states to completely ban child marriage). The minimum age for marriage in the United States is set by each state, and 17 of the U.S. states do not have a legal minimum age of marriage. Individuals aged 18 have the free ability to marry in the US states, except in Nebraska (19) and Mississippi (21). In addition, no state, except Delaware and New Jersey, forbid minors to marry in certain circumstances, such as parental consent, judicial consent, pregnancy, or a combination of these situations. The policy and program discourse related to early marriage (i.e., marriage before age 18) has increased significantly in India during the past decade.
Marriage is a social institution governed by norms and expectations, and situated within a social context of intricate kin networks. This chapter discusses the courtship patterns, family support for the union, and the role of marriage preparation in sustaining contemporary marriages. Contemporary marriages are increasingly dominated by individual interests and expected to meet personal needs of self-fulfilment and happiness. Women who married for romantic love were more likely to remain married, and those who married for reasons of economic security or to secure housing were more likely to be divorced. Of equal significance is the role of marriage preparation in preparing the script for navigating modern marital relationship. One of the functions of courtship is to facilitate marriage preparation. The chapter focuses on the spouse selection. It surfaces the empirical support for many hypotheses linking marital choices and marriage stability. Keywords: courtship patterns; marriage preparation; modern
A federal judge struck down Nebraskas ban on same-sex marriage in a decision handed down Monday.. U.S. District Court Judge Joseph Bataillon found Nebraska law prohibiting same-sex marriage facially discriminates based on gender and cannot withstand constitutional scrutiny.. Nebraskas Defense of Marriage Constitutional Amendment, Section 29, is an unabashedly gender-specific infringement of the equal rights of its citizens, Bataillon wrote. The State primarily offers as its rational basis for this gender-specific discrimination the encouragement of biological family units. The essence of this rationale has been rejected by most courts and by no less than the Supreme Court. With the advent of modern science and modern adoption laws, same sex couples can and do responsibly raise children. Unfortunately, this law inhibits their commendable efforts.. ...
Modern culture would have you believe that everyone has a soul-mate; that romance is the most important part of a successful marriage; that marriage does not mean til death do us part, but merely for as long as my needs are being met; and that when serious differences arise, divorce is the best solution. According to the Bible, all of these modern-day assumptions miss what marriage is all about. In The Meaning of Marriage, Timothy Keller, along with Kathy, his wife of forty years, draws a profound portrait of marriage from the pages of Scripture that neither idealizes nor rejects the institution but points us back to the relationship between God and man. The result is a vision for marriage that is refreshingly frank and unsentimental, yet hopeful and beautiful. This six-session video Bible study is for anyone from singles, to couples considering marriage, to those who have been married recently or for a long time. The six sessions are: The Secret of Marriage The Essence of Marriage The Mission of
Anyone who has married an immigrant may be wondering what is marriage fraud. Marriage fraud is a common concern amongst individuals who are marrying an immigrant who is trying to become a citizen. Some people find that they have become victims of marriage fraud without even realizing it.. Marriage fraud is an act of marriage that occurs with a desire for an advance in lifestyle rather than love. Many immigrants find it extremely difficult to obtain citizenship on their own. They will turn to marriage in order to receive a valid citizenship, because it is an easier process. The married couple will have to prove their knowledge of each other, show finances that they share, and clearly demonstrate the need for their spouse to achieve citizen status. The couple will have to go through an aggressive interview process with the immigration board before a citizenship is awarded. A good indication of marriage fraud would be the desire or act of divorce after a two year period of marriage. If the couple ...
The three essays in this dissertation examine issues related to family structure and marriage in Sub-Saharan Africa. The first two essays explore how family structures influence childrens outcomes. The third essay focuses on the data quality of marriage histories collected in a longitudinal survey. The first essay examines whether the timing and type of orphanhood is associated with early sexual debut and early marriage among 12-19-year-old adolescents in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Malawi, and Uganda. I also test whether education mediates orphans risk of early sexual initiation and early marriage. Discrete-time event history models suggest that female double orphans, regardless of timing of orphanhood, have greater odds of early sexual debut than do nonorphans. Education explains little of their increased risk. In contrast, male orphans of any type reveal no increased vulnerability to early sexual debut. Uganda is the only country where female orphans, specifically double orphans and those who are paternal
I find it very, very hard to believe that a Conservative Muslim voted in favor of gay marriage. Islam is clear on homosexuality, and several Muslim countries impose the death penalty for homosexuality. I saw the Pew Research a few months ago citing that most European Muslims believe homosexual behavior is immoral.. Id be surprised if six Christian American Republican Congressmen or Senators supported gay marriage. Yet Im supposed to believe ALL six Muslim MPs did? (I find it hard to believe there are only six Muslim MPs in Germany in the first place, given the influx of refugees...). So is it really true that all of Germanys Muslim MPs voted in favor of same-sex marriage?. ...
There are times when our two boys act just like an old married couple.. They bicker. They snipe at one another. And then they do something that reminds you how much they have in common and that they really do love each other.. I took this photo in a Citroen dealership after we had been out for lunch with my family last weekend. At first glance it brought to mind an old married couple out for a Sunday drive, bickering all the way. In actual fact, the boys had been studiously evaluating the interior and features of every car in the showroom in a manner that would put Top Gear to shame. They were having a whale of a time.. For all that they will argue on a frequent basis, their common love of cars and the London Underground plus a genuine affection for one another means that, underneath all the niggling, they are close as siblings and always likely to remain so no matter where they both end up. A bit like an old married couple. I hope so, anyway.. ...
The decisions address different issues, and neither declares a broad constitutional right to same-sex marriage that covers residents of all 50 states. But in each case, acting on the final day of the term that began last October, a 5-4 court majority endorsed a position that helps the same-sex marriage cause, as well as individual couples.. Were proud of you guys, President Obama said in a broadcast telephone call from Air Force One to the two same-sex couples who had contested Proposition 8, and were proud to have this in California.. The Proposition 8 case involved a challenge to the 2008 California ballot measure that banned same-sex marriage. On Wednesday, the court concluded that the supporters of the California ban lacked the legal standing to defend the measure. For same-sex couples in California, the real-world result could be theyre able to secure marriage licenses within about 25 days, once an appellate court takes a necessary procedural step.. As soon as they lift the stay, ...
This study aimed to determine the changing prevalence of consanguineous marriage in India between two national-level surveys. The primary hypothesis was whether region of residence and religious affiliation continue to play a significant role in determining consanguineous marriage even after controlling other potentially significant confounding variables. Data from the 81,781 and 85,851 ever-married women during the National Family and Health Surveys (NFHS) survey periods 1992-1993 (NFHS-1) and 2015-2016 (NFHS-4), respectively, were used in the analysis. Multinomial and binary logistic regression analyses examined determinants of consanguineous marriage types and of paternal and maternal first-cousin marriages, respectively. In both analyses a systematic model-building procedure was adopted. Altogether, four models were estimated. In the final model (model 4) of both the analyses, all respondent background characteristics (region of residence, religious affiliation, sociodemographic, household wealth)
Polygamy remains one of the key topics in various societies. It is through cultural practices, beliefs and also on the individuals choices that people decide to be committed to polygamy lifestyles. In several parts of Africa, polygamy is not only a marriage of choice but a value system that inspires and shapes family relations. With the discourse of rights, in particular womens rights, unstoppable coming to the fore, the practice of polygamy stands seriously challenged and its future is in grave doubt. However, polygamy remains widespread across the world.1 There are consequences to each type of marriage that certain individuals might adapt to. Women who have entered into polygamous marriages have different experiences that can be enriching to those who practice monogamy. This dissertation will highlight what people in polygamous marriages in the Gambia face on a daily basis. This dissertation will not argue that there are more disadvantages for women who are in polygamous marriages than there ...
The UN Commission on Status of Women, Session 57, debated inclusion of child marriage in agreement on eliminating violence against women, as Malawi seeks to raise its legal age of marriage from 15 to 18. More than 140 million girls will become child brides by 2020 if current rates of early marriage continue, according to the UN.. Of that number of girls aged under 18, 50 million will be younger than 15, says the UN Population Fund, which co-hosted a panel on child marriage at the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) on Thursday.. Although rates of child marriage vary between and within countries, most take place in rural sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia.. In south Asia, nearly half of young women are married by their 18th birthday. In sub-Saharan Africa the figure is more than one-third.. Nine of the 10 countries with the highest rates of child marriage are in Africa. Niger has the highest rate, at 75%, followed by Chad and Central African Republic at 68%, Guinea at 63%, Mozambique at 56%, ...

The marriage equality movement in the United States has been fueled by the strategic and coordinated efforts of legal groups, advocacy organizations, and a small but active community of grantmakers. The historic U.S. Supreme Court rulingon June 26 to extend marriage equality nationwide was preceded by a gradual legislative sea change and a dramatic shift in public opinion. In 2001, a majority of Americans opposed the idea of allowing same-sex couples to marry. In 2015, polls showed a reversal of the numbers, with 57 percent of Americans favoring marriage equality.. One of the key funders behind this shift was the Civil Marriage Collaborative (CMC), an initiative of the Proteus Fund that has partnered with individual donors and foundations to award roughly $2 million in grants each year since 2004 for a broad range of publicly visible education activities aimed at advancing marriage equality. In the wake of the Supreme Courts decision to uphold same-sex marriage as a constitutional right, its ...

Beginning in the late 1930s, a crisis in colonial Gusiiland developed over traditional marriage customs. Couples eloped, wives deserted husbands, fathers forced daughters into marriage, and desperate men abducted women as wives. Existing historiography focuses on women who either fled their rural homes to escape a new dual patriarchy-African men backed by colonial officials-or surrendered themselves to this new power. Girl Cases: Marriage and Colonialism in Gusiiland, Kenya 1890-1970 takes a new approach to the study of Gusii marriage customs and shows that Gusii women stayed in their homes to fight over the nature of marriage. Gusii women and their lovers remained committed to traditional bridewealth marriage, but they raised deeper questions over the relations between men and women.. During this time of social upheaval, thousands of marriage disputes flowed into local African courts. By examining court transcripts, Girl Cases sheds light on the dialogue that developed surrounding the ...

Juneau - Monday, the Alaska House of Representatives passed legislation sponsored by Representative Matt Claman (D-Anchorage) that amends the Alaska Marriage Code to add language that allows for marriages to be solemnized by elected officials of the state of Alaska.. Under current Alaska statute, marriage may only be solemnized by a minister, priest, rabbi, or commissioned officer of the Salvation Army, a marriage commissioner or judicial officer, or any religious organization or congregation. With recent court closures, adding elected officials to this list provides Alaskans an easily accessible marriage option to perform the ceremony without having to go through the time-consuming process of arranging for a marriage commissioner appointment. This change particularly improves access to marriage solemnization in rural areas with fewer officials pre-approved by the state. For instance, if a couple in a remote Alaskan village are set to be married and the minister becomes ill, an elected official ...
The issue of taxation has been integral to the debate about same-sex marriage. In United States v. Windsor, the Supreme Court held that restricting marriage and spouse to opposite-sex couples for estate tax purposes was unconstitutional. In the 2013 ruling, the court threw out the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996, which contained the restriction. The case involved Edith Windsor and Thea Spyer of New York who were legally married in Canada in 2007. Spyer died in 2009, leaving her estate to Windsor, who claimed the federal estate tax exemption for surviving spouses. The IRS rejected the claim, prompting the court case.. Looking ahead, the tax implications for gay couples and the resulting revenue from state income taxes are harder to calculate than the immediate sales tax impact of a surge in new weddings. For example, the Williams Institute report said that homeownership generally is lower among single people than married couples. It is also lower for unmarried same-sex couples than married ...
The fight over same-sex marriage reaches a climax in March, when the U.S. Supreme Court has scheduled argument on Californias Proposition 8 and on the federal Defense of Marriage Act on consecutive days.
Downloadable! Abstract: Do individuals divorce for economic reasons? Can we measure the attractiveness of new matches in the marriage market? We answer these questions using a structural model of the household and a rich panel dataset from Malawi. We propose a model of the household with consumption, production and revealed preference conditions for stability on the marriage market. We define marital instability in terms of the consumption gains to remarrying another individual in the same marriage market, and to being single. We find that a 1 percentage point increase in the wifes estimated consumption gains from remarriage is significantly associated with a 0.6 percentage point increase in divorce probability in the next three years. In a multinomial model, higher values of consumption gains from remarriage raise the odds of divorce and remarriage but not of divorce and singleness. These findings provide out-of-sample validation of the structural model and shed new light on the economic determinants
Periodontitis is defined as an inflammatory disease of supporting tissues of teeth characterized by progressive destruction of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. Periodontal manifestations of these genetic disorders or syndromes, such as familial and cyclic neutropenias, granulomatous disease, agranulocytosis, Langerhans cell disease, glycogen storage disease, hypophosphatasia, leucocyte adhesion deficiency, and Papillon‐Lefèvre, Chédiak‐Higashi, Cohen, Ehlers‐Danlos, Marfan, Down, Haim‐Munk, and Kindlers syndromes, imitate some types of periodontal diseases. Most of these syndromes have autosomal‐recessive characterization and can be seen commonly in consanguineous marriages. Therefore, consanguineous marriages have generally been accepted as having important detrimental effects on offspring. There is a lot of genetic research about consanguineous marriage and its detrimental effects on offspring. Although consanguineous marriages are common in the world, the relationship with

Dear Cecil:. In this brave new (Western) world of marriage equality, why is polygamy still illegal? Ive read all the usual arguments, which assume only heterosexual males would want multiple partners; successful men will monopolize all the marriageable women, leaving gangs of undesirable bachelors roaming the countryside; etc. They all seem like complete bullshit in the 21st-century U.S. Whats the real reason?. - Jason. Cecil replies:. Man, the polygamy bandwagon is really picking up steam - no less than Chief Justice John Roberts pitched the idea last year in his dissent in Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court decision affirming same-sex marriage. Roberts argued, essentially, why stop here? From the standpoint of history and tradition, he wrote, a leap from opposite-sex marriage to same-sex marriage is much greater than one from a two-person union to plural unions, which have deep roots in some cultures around the world. He was being rhetorical, sure - that scamp - but still, a ...
Marriage used to be practically universal, but now persists as an institution for only some groups, while others choose non-marital fertility. This paper posits that if one role of marriage is to insure one partners investment in children, then home-ownership can be seen as providing the necessary collateral for this contract. As easier divorce and paternity enforcement outside of marriage have reduced the relative strength of the marital contract, the division of assets, particularly the family home, post-separation has remained unique to marriage. We provide a model where husbands can ante up the marital home to elicit more optimal child investments, whose costs are born mostly by the mother, by reducing the chance of divorce while providing consumption insurance to their partner. This, in turn, increases the value of marriage for those able to access this collateralized version of the contract. The model predicts that individuals able to buy a home at the time of marriage will invest ...
Child marriage has become a common practice in the rural areas of Balochistan. The ratio is increasing day by day. It has eventually got merged as a custom for most of the areas, whereas, some others have other reasons to get their young daughters married. It is, however, a clear violation of human rights.. According to Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, 22.82 per cent children are deprived of schooling out of which 32 per cent are the victims of child marriages. As per local estimates, they were compelled to leave their studies, either by their parents or the opposite sides.. However, it is shocking to know that small children_ approximately 10 to 12 ages_ are forced to marry with old men. How come a child of 10 to 12 years manage with an old man of more than 40 years? It is a serious violation of Human Rights but who cares!. A research indicates that marrying a child at early age when physically and mentally immature is very detrimental and unbearabe. Because these children never really ...

Few marital problems cause as much heartache and devastation as infidelity, which undermines the foundation of marriage itself. However, when both spouses are committed to authentic healing, most marriages survive and many marriages become stronger with deeper levels of intimacy.. Infidelity isnt a single, clearly defined situation - and whats considered infidelity varies among couples and even between partners in a relationship. For example, is an emotional connection without physical intimacy considered infidelity? What about online relationships? Individuals and couples need to define for themselves what constitutes infidelity in the context of their marriage.. Many factors can contribute to infidelity, and most arent fundamentally about sex. The Vermont Marriage Advisory Council recently sponsored a forum at the University of Vermont, entitled, Does Traditional Marriage Matter? FRC Senior Fellow Dr. Pat Fagan, Director for Marriage and Religion, presented a host of data from the social sciences which deal directly with the institution of marriage and the implications of genderless marriage. The VMACs website contains a video of Dr. Fagans presentation, The Right of the Child to the Marriage of His Parents.
A recent post by Cr@ig on Main Street Plaza caused me to reflect on the strength of interfaith marriages. I had hoped to generate a follow-up post on this topic at MSP. However, since the comments on the Cr@igs post devolved into a blame game of whether the believer or non-believer was more responsible for marital dissolution, I decided it was probably best to avoid a second opportunity for mud-slinging. Differences in religious belief can be the death knell to a marriage. For that reason, many organized religions strongly advocate against being yoked with unbelievers. This is not only a Mormon phenomenon; you see this in any faith tradition that teaches that they alone have exclusive access to God. Even before marriage, it is rare for the unmarried, devout Mormon to even consider dating (let alone marrying) a non-Mormon; most LDS women raised in the Church are taught from an early age to make a temple marriage to a returned missionary their primary goal. Likewise, in the Catholic Church, marriage to

The percentage of marriages ending in divorce increases more rapidly in the first 10 years of marriage than the 10 years after that. Once the 20th wedding anniversary is reached, the percentage increases less rapidly.. Conversely, the percentage of marriages that end because one spouse has died increases less rapidly in the first 40 years of marriage than the 10 years after that. This is because people are more likely to die at older ages, so mortality has a bigger impact on those who have been married for a long time.. However, while 42% of all marriages are estimated to end eventually in divorce, other factors are likely to influence the likelihood of divorce for individuals, including:. ...
By now, youve probably seen a certain political cartoon. It comes in several variants, but the basic premise is always the same. Basically, it juxtaposes a straight persons adamance in protecting his or her marriage from same-sex marriage with obliviousness or willful laziness in regard to those more realistic and immediate threats of their own making, such as adultery, drinking, abusiveness, emotional distance, poor sexual intimacy or compatibility, getting married far too soon or too young, or just the overall rate of divorce amongst straight couples. One version contrasts the threat of same-sex marriage against the supposed threat presented by quickie celebrity marriages, such as those of our sacrificial pop culture whipping girls like Kim Kardashian or Britney Spears.. Funny how theyre always mocked for this, but not their husbands. Slut-shaming writ large.. You may have also seen a witty political outreach campaign asserting the message same-sex marriage does not threaten our ...
In particular, Holder will no longer defend Section 3 of the law that defines what the federal government will recognize as a marriage or spouse. Section 3 was ruled unconstitutional back in July of last year by U.S. District Court Judge Joseph L. Tauro, in Boston. The Department of Justice appealed the decision in October, but now apparently will abandon that appeal.. New York) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai should take urgent action to fight child marriage and domestic violence or risk further harm to development and public health in Afghanistan, Human Rights Watch said today in a letter to the president.. In the 15-page briefing paper, Afghanistan: Ending Child Marriage and Domestic Violence, Human Rights Watch highlights the health and economic consequences of marriage under age 18 and violence against women and girls. Karzai, who is barred by term limits from running in the April 2014 presidential election, should make full enforcement of the 2009 Law on the Elimination of Violence Against Women (the EVAW Law) a priority for his last year in office.. President Karzais signing of the violence against women law in 2009 ushered in vital protections against child marriage and domestic violence, said Liesl Gerntholtz, womens rights director at Human Rights Watch. By ensuring the law is enforced, Karzai would leave a lasting legacy of support for the ...
A same-sex marriage ban, enacted by Montana voters in 2004, was overturned in federal court. U.S. District Judge Brian Morris declared the ban unconstitutional on Wednesday and it was rendered effective immediately.. The decision arose from the U.S. District Court for the District of Montana, Great Falls Division. Judge Morris, an Obama appointee, filed his written opinion on November 19, 2014. His basis for overruling the ban is the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment. While sympathizing with the fact that not all Montana citizens will be happy with his decision, Morris emphasized that federal law favors protecting minorities over majority will.. Government reaction to the decision is mixed. State Attorney General Tim Fox announced plans to appeal the ruling but is not blocking the distribution of same-sex marriage licenses. He indicated that it is his duty to uphold Montana law and continue the legal process until all remedies are exhausted.. Governor Steve Bullock instructed his ...
Relying mainly on two legal points that federal courts have repeatedly rejected over the past sixteen months, a federal trial judge in San Juan ruled Tuesday that Puerto Ricos ban on same-sex marriage survives constitutional challenge. The combination of a one-line Supreme Court decision in 1972 and the Courts full-scale ruling in June a year ago on the federal Defense of Marriage Act means that lower courts are required to leave the marriage question to the states (and to Puerto Rico), U.S. District Judge Juan M. Perez-Gimenez declared in a twenty-one-page opinion.. The decision was a clear break with the near-unanimous results of federal trial and appeals courts in the wake of the Justices ruling last year in United States v. Windsor - a ruling that said nothing directly about state power to deny marriage for gay and lesbian couples, but has been widely interpreted as if it had said a great deal. Since Windsor, only one other federal trial judge has upheld such a ban - in ...
Consanguineous marriage is matrimony between individuals who are closely related. Though it may involve incest, it implies more than the sexual nature of incest. In a clinical sense, marriage between two family members who are second cousins or closer qualify as having a consanguineous marriage. This is based on the gene copies their offspring may receive. Though these unions are still prevalent in some communities, as seen across the Greater Middle East region, many other populations have seen a great decline in family marriages. Globally, 8.5% of children have consanguineous parents, and 20% of the human population live in communities practicing endogamy. Theories on the developments of consanguineous marriage as a taboo can be supported as being both a social, and a biological development. In a social perspective, the observed inclination to practice consanguinity has been due to advantages to social and financial status. Upholding familial structure and assets, and ease of marital ...

Introduction: Consanguineous marriage is associated with increased risks for congenital anomalies, low birthweight, and other adverse perinatal outcomes. In this population-based, case-control study we investigated the association between consanguineous marriage (first-cousin marriage) and stillbirth risk, using prospectively collected information from prepregnancy visits.. Material and methods: From 2007 to 2009, we identified 283 stillbirths (cases) and 2088 randomly selected live control births through prepregnancy visits in rural Golestan, Iran. The associations between consanguinity and prepregnancy maternal characteristics and stillbirth risk were examined using multivariate logistic regression.. Results: The rate of consanguineous marriage was 19.4% among cases and 13.6% among controls. Consanguinity was associated with increased stillbirth risk [ odds ratio (OR) 1.53; 95% CI 1.10-2.14]. The association was significantly increased for preterm stillbirth (, 37 gestational weeks) (OR 2.43; ...

p,Fertility, being a major study unit in population dynamics, should be analyzed from different perspectives as it plays a pivotal role in understanding the complex issues integral to population growth. The main objective of this study was, therefore, to understand what the micro level major socio - economic determinants of fertility are in the case of urban Ethiopia. Count data models were used to estimate fertility, given by the number of children ever born by a woman, using the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS) data of 2005. The main findings of the study showed that education, age at first marriage, labor force participation and wealth status of women are negatively related to fertility while child mortality was not found to be a significant determinant of fertility. The findings of the study revealed that fertility decision is influenced by various socio-economic variables and, hence, achieving a low level of fertility rate requires an all rounded sustainable development ...

The amendment defines that [m]arriage shall be a life union solely of one woman and one man. Furthermore, point two reads that legal relations in marriage, family, and civil unions are to be regulated by a law adopted by a two-thirds majority of the total number of Members of Parliament.. The amendment found a majority of 72-4, but still needs final confirmation through an additional parliamentary vote and presidential approval.. As a consequence, issues concerning family law will need the same majority as issues of territorial integrity, sovereignty, and the functioning of the State.. An earlier version of the draft Amendment, which explicitly banned same-sex civil unions or registered cohabitation was strongly criticized by the Venice Commission, an advisory body of the Council of Europe in constitutional affairs.. The Commission argued that if the Amendment would regulate other partnerships than marriage, it should ensure equality in terms of rights for same-sex and opposite-sex ...

The context of marriage in the United States involves not only whether and when Americans choose to marry, but also how many times they marry. The majority of recent marriages are first marriages for both spouses. However, divorce rates are higher in the United States compared with European nations,1 and remarried adults have a higher likelihood of divorce than those in their first marriage.2. In 2008, a series of marital history questions were added to the American Community Survey (ACS). These items, shown in Figure 1, construct a history of marriage, divorce, and widowhood among respondents by recording: (1) whether adults had married, been widowed, or divorced in the past year; (2) how many times adults had married; and (3) the year adults most recently married. One of the strengths of ACS data is that estimates are available for sub-state geographic areas. Further, the ACS provides marital history data on adults of all ages whether they reside in households or group quarters. This report ...
As explained in Does rape within a marriage lead to divorce? what your former husband did does not constitute rape. It was abuse because he forced sex upon you, but rape has a specific meaning and definition that cannot be applied between a husband and wife.. The Greek word porneia also has a specific meaning. I understand that you can find those who wish to change its meaning into a catch-all for anything remotely related to sex, but that does not change the facts. God used the word porneia and we must respect that He knew what He was doing. A fairly complete definition of porneia is included in the answer to Where does the Bible specifically say sex outside of marriage is wrong? While your former husbands behavior was disgusting, it falls under the terms of sensuality, lewdness, and violence but not fornication. Two similar questions address this as well: Is pornography a just cause for divorce that allows remarriage? and Is phone sex grounds for a divorce?. You found your ...
Kirstie Alley is promoting her new book about the men in her life The Art of Men, by doling out details about falling in extramarital love with movie stars like the late Patrick Swayze and her Look Whos Talking co-star John Travolta (who she swears is not gay.). Kirsties love affairs never were consummated, but they were all emotional affairs, which are just as hurtful as a sexual affairs, if not more so. In fact, Kirstie had an emotional affair with a young man at age 24, four years into her first marriage to Bob Alley (Kirsties maiden name is also Alley, and her father is named Robert, to make things more confusing.). Kirstie met Bob at high school in Kansas. She married Bob when she was 20, and worked in a sweatshop laundry while he completed veterinary school. After he graduated, they moved to California where he became a partner in a veterinary practice, and Kirstie hit the beaches in her bikini. Shed grown tired of sex with Bob, was bored with her life, and enjoyed flirting with the ...
The proposed bill violates fundamental human rights that are guaranteed under the Nigerian constitution and various human rights international agreements that Nigeria is a signatory to. This bill could lead to political and social harassment of people for their actual or imputed sexual orientation. It could also stifle freedom of expression and association through the proposed ban on organizations that support Lesbians and gay rights.. The bill could further affect Nigeria Human rights records, many including the police would use it as a license to intimidate and harass citizens based on their actual or suspected sexual orientation. The passing of the bill would give official validation to the harassment of sexual minorities and many homophobic persons would use it as a license to discriminate against lesbians and gays. Hate crime are not uncommon in Nigeria.. Please sign the letter below to urge Nigerian lawmakers to decriminalize Same sex relationship, stop the proposed anti same sex marriage ...
The last one may have surprised you some, though the first two are somewhat self-evident. Still, marriage is under attack. Biblical marriage is defined only as between a man and a woman. This is why the gay community is so determined to redefine the word marriage. This is critical to the gay marriage debate! Biblically there should be no debate, but we have given credence to the arguments because we have unwittingly accepted the use of their terms.. A key element that has been missing from the discussion is the Biblical position of the last interpersonal relationship mentioned on the list above-the eunuch. Your first reaction may be to think that being a eunuch is not an interpersonal relationship at all, but it most certainly is… In our culture, we only think of the word eunuch in the same sentence as the word castration, but that is only one type of biblical eunuch that God mentions.. The disaster of this entire debate revolves around a misunderstanding that is prevalent within ...
Michael Medved and Dennis Prager, among others, have cautioned that the same arguments used in favor of gay marriage would suggest that incestuous marriage be permitted as well. The problem with these slippery slope arguments is that they have a way of becoming the next progressive agenda item. Here is a news story from Germany about a brother and sister who just want to be free to love one another. Interestingly enough, the story does not mention legalizing marriage, just incest, presumably because the institution of marriage already is passe in Germany even among unrelated heterosexual couples ...

The newly married couple poses as husband and wife in front of the courthouse.. Aj and Patty were one of the wedding couples who fell victim to the 2020 wedding debacle. After re-planning their wedding reception for 2022, they decided they were ready to continue on with their lives and wanted to be married. Thus, they decided to gather a handful of friends and family to be witnesses for their courthouse wedding at the Ridgedale Courthouse in Minnetonka. It was a short and sweet wedding with masks still in effect.. While walking into the courtroom, Pattys mother mentioned how the courtroom looked just like the courtroom they finalized Pattys adoption in which added a level of sentiment.. While the ambiance was still a courthouse, once the vows started, emotions ran high and the ceremony still had the same impact as all other weddings do with laughs, tears, and cheers.. Weddings such as these show that if you are ready to get married and dont want to wait, go ahead and wear a fancy dress/shirt, ...

United Nations, New York/Beirut, Lebanon - An alarming rise in child marriages has been seen among the most vulnerable Syrian refugee populations in Lebanon, according to a newly completed survey conducted by UNFPA, the American University of Beirut and Sawa for Development and Aid. The survey covered some 2,400 refugee women and girls living in Western Bekaa, and found that more than a third of those surveyed between the ages of 20 and 24 had been married before reaching age 18.
Despite the large literature on the long-term effects of parental divorce, few studies have analyzed the effects of parental divorce on spouse selection behavior. However, the characteristics of ones spouse can have important effects on economic well-being and on marital success. We use discrete-time, event-history data from Finnish population registers to study the effects of parental divorce on entry into marriage with spouses who have different educational qualifications (both absolute and relative to ones own education), using conditional multinomial logistic regression models. The results show that Finnish children of divorce have lower rates of marriage than those from intact families. In particular, children of divorce have a lower likelihood of marrying spouses with secondary education or more, and especially low rates of marrying someone with a tertiary degree. The latter gap is smaller among those with tertiary education, as a result of the higher rates of homogamous marriage among ...
For many married Americans, nighttime means curling up in a bed shared with their spouse. But a growing trend of couples opting for separate beds may help spouses get better sleep and alleviate marital problems, experts say.According to a 2017 survey from the National Sleep Foundation, almost one in four married couples sleep in separate beds.Jill Lankler, a New York clinical psychologist and life coach, says while that number seems high given the stigma that may still exist around separate

Marriage is a sacred institution in Islam. Celibacy and bachelorhood are discouraged in Islam and it says marriage completes the faith of a Muslim but still, marriage is a contract between husband and wife therefore it could be broken. The followings are the Islamic ways of granting a divorce. 1. Mutual Consent divorce - Here both husband and wife mutually decide to get separated.
For all the Christians that use their Bible to attack same-sex marriage, a US bishop is suggesting they should take a closer look at the scripture.. In Gene Robinsons new book, God Believes In Love: Straight Talk About Gay Marriage, the gay Episcopalian bishop deconstructs the most seemingly homophobic passages in the Bible.. He believes, at best, the orders against gay sex are products of a time in which all people were assumed to be born heterosexual.. In an interview with the Lexington Herald Leader, Robinson said: Making gayness seem like willful disobedience rather than an inborn orientation was not even considered within the cultural framework of the period.. He rejects passages like in Leviticus, which famous line states You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.. Robinson says if we have moved on from keeping slaves, wearing clothes of different fabrics, not keeping women as property, then we can move on from homophobia.. He states Jesus never ...

As a married person] why would you decry others who seek similar legal status and protections as bourgeois and unimportant? While I completely agree with you that marriage equality isnt the be-all and end all and that there are pressing issues of economic and racial inequality - not to mention the oppressive forces of global capitalism - that also need to be challenged, I do celebrate the winning of marriage equality for same-gender couples as a remarkable liberatory moment. I would rather not stack these against each other. I dont believe that I am less an ally in the work of racial and economic justice because I now have legal protections for my relationship. Also, my experience, unlike yours, is that most of the people I know who were most actively engaged in marriage equality work, locally and across the nation, are also very engaged in an array of other forms of justice and ally work. They see the connections, experience them, and are continuing to resist. Many of them have been ...
HIV/AIDS has emerged as a serious public health issue across the globe, and particularly in developing countries. Comprehensive knowledge and positive attitudes are cornerstones for the prevention, control and treatment of HIV/AIDS. However, there are various misconceptions associated with HIV/AIDS transmission, which lead to negative attitudes towards people living with AIDS. The present study aims to explore the effects of these determinants, related to socio-demographic characteristics and autonomy, on womens overall knowledge and attitudes regarding HIV/AIDS in Pakistan. Secondary data analysis was carried out using the national representative dataset of the 2012-13 Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey. A series of questions related to HIV/AIDS was asked of 13,558 ever-married women aged 15-49 years to assess respondents knowledge regarding modes of HIV/AIDS transmission and preventative measures, as well as their attitudes towards people living with HIV/AIDS. Publisher-Editors Foreword: Mr. Michael Creighton, whose concise summary of the errors of the Society of Saint Pius X has been cited on in about twenty-five articles this site, has revised a study on the modern problems of marriage that was published on this site on August 31, 2012, the Feast of Saint Raymond Nonnatus. Mr. Creighton undertook the study as a result of questions that had been posed to him by a number of people in his acquaintance concerning the disparity that exists amongst traditional clergy the status of marriages that present canonical questions of great pastoral sensitivity.. [The disparity that exists within traditional circles on the issue of marriage is understandable given the fact that the principle of unity that is the Chair of Saint Peter is lacking at this time of apostasy and betrayal. Mr. Creightons study is only that, a study that provides food for thought and reflection that is based upon a review of the teaching of the Catholic Church.. {Readers will find this ...

New Jersey citizens are becoming more active as the debate over gay unions in the state goes from the philosophical to the practical, and from the courts to the Legislature.. From the AP: Both sides - those who say they want to protect marriage as it is, and those who call for marriage equality - are recruiting and mobilizing volunteers to pressure lawmakers.. A bill that would allow gay marriage is expected to be debated in Trenton during the lame-duck period between the Nov. 3 election and start of a new legislative session in January. In the fall, there probably will be television and radio ads on the issue. But for now, the focus is mostly on the faithful speaking to their representatives in Trenton.. In 2006, the state Supreme Court said committed gay couples deserved the same treatment as straight married couples. The Legislature responded by making New Jersey the third state to offer civil unions, which give the same legal benefits the state offers to married couples, but not the ...
The basic issue here is that the Spanish Habsburgs tried to keep power by literally keeping it in the family. During the last three-quarters of their time, from 1551 to 1700, no outsider married into the Spanish royal family. Indeed, if one looks at the six kings from 1497 (when Philip the Fair married Joanna I of Castile and Aragon, and thus became Philip I), then we note that there were 11 marriages, most of which were among blood relatives - two uncle-niece marriages, one double first cousin marriage, one first cousin marriage, two first cousins once removed marriages, one second cousin marriage, and two third cousin marriages. (See Wikipedia for an explanation of these relationship terms.) This gave Charles II an inbreeding coefficient of 0.254 (calculated by Alvarez et al. 2009) - for comparison, the offspring of a brother-sister union would have a value of 0.250, as would the offspring of a parent-child union. Phillip III (Charles IIs grandfather) also reached a high level: 0.218. Both ...
A direct test indicated a partners physical attractiveness played a larger role in predicting husbands satisfaction than wives, U.S. researchers say.. Andrea L. Meltzer of Southern Methodist University in Dallas and colleagues analyzed the data of four independent, longitudinal studies to examine sex differences in the implications of partner physical attractiveness and marital satisfaction.. In all four studies, both partners physical attractiveness was objectively rated at baseline, and both partners reported their marital satisfaction up to eight times over the first four years of marriage.. The study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, found husbands were more satisfied at the beginning of the marriage and remained more satisfied over the next four years to the extent that they had an attractive wife, while wives were no more or less satisfied initially or over the next four years to the extent that they had an attractive husband. ...

A few weeks ago I went to a party of artist types. There was an unmarried gay couple who had adopted a child of another race. How they did that is not clear to me. But Ive heard of stranger adoptions by gays, adults adopting adults, lawyers in fact, to establish legal lines of property rights. (Incidentally, the triangle of three males, two adopted by the third are now dead, all three, so what ultimately happened to the property, which was considerable, I do not know. Except they owned one of my paintings and I do know where that went.) The little tyke at the party was the center of attention. How everyone doted on that little guy. It was quite amazing. But that got me thinking about the legalities behind that adoption, but since I didnt care to ask, those lines of thought just fizzled out to unresolved loose threads. That must have been how they engaged that arrangement legally, loosely, that is, not being lawyers themselves. ...
Introduction. Jonathan Morgan 11p 10/10/2000 Pride and Prejudice Discuss the theme of marriage Pride and prejudice opens with one of the most famous lines in English literature: It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in need of a wife. The novel begins by the ambitious Mrs Bennet to find a husband, or at least a husband with good fortune, for each of her five daughters. Whenever Charles Bingley visits the village, Bingley and his friend Darcy heightens Mrs Bennets hopes. Jane falls in love with Bingley, but his snobbish sisters and Darcy effect the separation of the pair, leaving Jane lonely. Darcy, though attracted to Elizabeth, is aware of how common the Bennets are compared to himself. Whenever Darcy overcomes his pride and proposes marriage, Elizabeth rejects him because of his attitude and his ill treatment towards a redcoat called Wickham, who has made friends with the Bennets. However, Wickhams true nature is exposed when the ...
