In a recent article, a couple who had married in Massachusetts in 2009 is challenging the Texas constitutional ban on same-sex marriages. The couple surfaced when they moved to Texas and attempted to put both names on their childs birth certificate. As time continues, it will become publicly evident that same-sex marriages are doomed.. Same-sex marriage (also known as gay marriage) is marriage between two people of the same sex. Legal recognition of same-sex marriage or the possibility to perform a same-sex marriage is sometimes referred to as marriage equality or equal marriage, particularly by supporters. The legalization of same-sex marriage is characterized as redefining marriage by many opponents. According to Wikipedia, marriage is called matrimony or wedlock. Is is a socially or ritually recognized union or legal contract between spouses that establishes rights and obligations between them, between them and their children, and between them and their in-laws.. The word marriage has ...
An early age at first marriage is known to be associated with a high risk of divorce. Yet, it has been suggested that beyond a certain point, the relationship between age at marriage and marital instability may become positive because as unmarried women begin to hear their biological clock tick, they may settle for matches far from the optimal. Analyses based on cycles 5 and 6 of the National Surveys of Family Growth show that the relationship between age at marriage and marital instability is strongly negative up to the late 20s, with a flattening of the curve thereafter. ...

In the United States, marriage is primarily governed by each individual state and marriage laws differ from state to state. Several states allow civil unions between two people of the same sex, and ten, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Maryland, Maine, Washington, Rhode Island and Iowa, plus the District of Columbia, currently issue same-sex marriage licenses. These marriage licenses are not recognized by the Federal government. In 1996 Congress recognized the likelihood that liberal activists would soon seek changes to the laws in some states that pertain to homosexuals. It considered the possibility of test cases reaching the Supreme Court, and of the court conceivably ruling that a state-even though it prohibits same-sex marriage itself-must honor same-sex marriages performed in another state pursuant to the Full Faith and Credit Clause of the United States Constitution. The Defense of Marriage act, which was passed and signed by President Clinton, prevents this ...
This Article highlights both the rewards in accepting and the risks in rejecting a claim of sex discrimination as one constitutional basis for invalidating restrictions on marriage for same-sex couples. It argues that recognition of same-sex marriage and elimination of enforced sex roles are as inextricably intertwined as the duck is with the rabbit in the famous optical illusion. As the Article demonstrates, this has long been clear to opponents, from the pope to David Blankenhorn, but needs to become as clear to proponents and to judges deciding same-sex marriage cases if we are to preserve and extend the liberty and equality of all regardless of sex or orientation. The Article begins by suggesting some advantages of thin over thick definitions of both sex and marriage in law. Through a review, first of landmark U.S. Supreme Court sex discrimination cases concerning the law of marriage and then of state constitutional same-sex marriage litigation from the 1970s to the present, it goes on to
The youth summit held in Kinshasa on October 29, 2014, was a day filled with learning about early marriages and the disadvantages that they cause in young peoples lives, as well as a discovery of the many talents of children. The summit brought together 80 children from different organizational structures: child reporters, students from the National Art Institute and Academy of Fine Arts, and children supervised by the NGO War Child; all accompanied by their supervisors. At the beginning of the summit, we were briefed on early marriage before getting to work. As Esther, a former street child, now accompanied by War Child, told me, Today, I learned that I can not enter into a marriage before adulthood. Marriage before adulthood comes with many consequences, such as having difficulties in childbirth such as the risk of death, without having fulfilled ones dreams. After the presentation, there was a video in which we learned that a 12-year-old girl still needs guidance to distinguish good from ...
Daniel Scott Smith has summarized the findings of thirty-eight family reconstitution studies (twenty-seven of which described French villages from the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries) as follows: A woman who married at age 20 exactly, and survived to age 45 with her husband would bear nine children (p. 22). Thus the potential maximum fertility was only about half of Leridons biological maximum. And what is more, Smiths potential maximum fertility is an overstatement for two reasons: first, the average age at first marriage for northwestern European women was not twenty and second about one-third of all marriages were broken by the death of one partner before age forty-five, which Smith is using as a shorthand measurement for the onset of menopause. In Smiths sample of thirty-eight villages, for example, the average age at first marriage for women was 25.7 years old; their husbands were 28.0 years old.. Basing his conclusions on fifty-four published studies describing age-specific ...
At ten oclock tomorrow morning, the Justices will hear one hour of oral arguments on the constitutionality of Californias Proposition 8, which amended that states constitution to prohibit same-sex marriages. The Court will then return on Wednesday morning to hear nearly two hours of arguments on the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which defines marriage for federal laws and programs - including things like income taxes, estate taxes, and Social Security survivors benefits - as a union between a man and a woman only.. Under any circumstances, the same-sex marriage cases would shine a spotlight squarely on the Court, but that spotlight will be even brighter given the recent coverage of the dramatic growth in public support for same-sex marriage, reflected not only in recent polls but also in statements by Republican Senator Rob Portman - who was on Mitt Romneys short list for potential vice-presidential candidates - and former President Bill Clinton, who signed DOMA into law in 1996. ...
Oct 17, 2012. We Need a Shutout! US Marriage Score today: 0-32. Citizens Decide the Fate of Marriage. To say it is a pivotal time for marriage would be quite an understatement! Supporters of same-sex marriage are energized by recent developments such as the extreme support of so-called gay rights by a sitting U.S. President, including his reversal and now support of same-sex marriage, the abolition of the militarys Dont Ask Dont Tell policy, and this presidents refusal to defend the Federal Defense of Marriage Act (his stated preference is to have the DOMA abolished).. Add to this various court actions such as the striking down of Californias Prop 8, the imposition of same-sex marriage by the courts upon the citizens of Iowa and ballot initiatives in four states that may bring to the U.S. the first time that same-sex marriage would be legalized by popular vote.. Yes, it appears that the trajectory of events favors gay advocates. But not so fast! Will gay marriage carry the day this ...
Marriage information is generally handwritten on sheets of paper. After 1848, information was recorded on pre-printed forms. After 1897, forms were required from the witnesses and the bride and groom requiring additional information. The earliest law requiring marriage registration was in 1673, but few counties complied with the law. Marriages were performed either by a clergyman or justice of the peace. In 1719, law required that marriages have a license or banns published three weeks before the marriage. In the colonial period, it is estimated that most marriages were by banns, but about 25 percent were by license. Some marriage bonds from 1711-1795 do exist. Beginning in 1795, marriages were recorded by county courts of common pleas. State registration of marriages began in May 1848. Marriage records were created to legalize marital relationships and to protect the interests of the wife and other heirs. Information included on marriage records is usually considered fairly reliable. Sometimes ...
Last week the Supreme Court delivered a serious blow to the opponents of legalizing same-sex marriage, when they struck down the portions of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that prevented the federal government from granting the same rights and privileges to same-sex married couples as they grant to opposite-sex marriages. DOMA was the last line of defense the right-wing had to stop federal acceptance of same-sex marriage, and now the Supreme Court has declared it to be unconstitutional ...
The Priority of Marriage People who stay married and those who get divorced have basically the same kinds of problems. The difference is not in the problems but in the commitment. the time is ripe for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. In this message, Adrian Rogers reveals three warnings from 1 John 2 as we near the rapture and Great. Marriage counselors agree: Most, if not all, marriage problems are rooted in poor communication. We often act in our marriages as though we are soloists, singing alone and beholden to nobody. But marriage is a duet, not a solo. And the Song of Solomon shows us a real life marriage filled with the music of intimate, personal, and open communication.. Adrian rogers on same sex marriage in Charters Towers
Using data from a 2007 study conducted in Amhara region, Ethiopia and multivariate logistic regression models, this paper analyzed the odds of reporting a stopped formal engagement or marriage among adolescent girls aged 10-19 years. Self-initiated discussion about forestalling marriage, community counseling of parents against early marriage, exposure to early marriage prevention messages from religious leaders, and secondary school attendance were positively associated with the odds of reporting a stopped child marriage or formal engagement. The odds of reporting that a child marriage was stopped declined with an increase in the perceived level of stigma against families whose daughters marriages had been stopped. A gap of 3 or more years in the legal and community definitions of early marriage was associated with significantly lower odds of stopped child marriages in rural as compared to urban areas.. ...
The author illustrates how qualitative data from open-ended interviews, pile sorts, and triad sorts can be used to test quantitatively for intracultural variation in norms. Specifically, the author tests whether Gusii men and women in the Suneka Division of Kisii District in southwest Kenya have developed a common set of standards in response to symptoms of malaria. In this small sample, the focus is on internal, rather than external, validity. While the findings about Gusii responses to malaria are not generalizable beyond the village where the data were collected, the method described may be used to study cultural similarities across socioeconomic, gender, and other groups.. ...
As shown in the figure, Americans approval of same-sex marriage has been increasing steadily for the past two decades. But a sharp decline in support did occur in the wake of Lawrence. That case did not deal directly with the issue of same-sex marriage (although Justice Antonin Scalia s dissent in the case raised the specter of it). Nevertheless, a highly salient debate over same-sex marriage began in the wake of that decision. Almost immediately, support for same-sex marriage dropped, fueled in large part by those who were strongly (as compared to mildly) opposed. The downward trajectory continued through the much-reported pair of decisions from Massachusetts in 2003 and 2004, and until the 2004 election, when same-sex marriage continued to be a salient political issue. At the time, the elite debate was highly lopsided in favor of opponents, as evidenced by the fact that virtually no member of Congress, let alone a presidential candidate, was willing to express support for same-sex ...
But in his August 8 ruling Judge Alan C. Kay, a Reagan appointee, found that Hawaii s legislature had a legitimate interest in legislating on behalf of traditional marriage. Throughout history and societies, marriage has been connected with procreation and childrearing, wrote Kay in his decision, which ran to 117 pages. It follows that it is not beyond rational speculation to conclude that fundamentally altering the definition of marriage to include same-sex unions might result in undermining the societal understanding of the link between marriage, procreation, and family structure. He added that to suddenly constitutionalize the issue of same-sex marriage would short-circuit the legislative actions that have been taking place in Hawaii.... Accordingly, because Hawaii s marriage laws are rationally related to legitimate government interests, they do not violate the federal Constitution.

The Council of Grand Justices yesterday began a session to hear a constitutional challenge concerning same-sex marriage, during which the spotlight fell mostly on Minister of Justice Chiu Tai-san (邱太三), who defended the legality of the Civil Codes definition of marriage as being between a man and a woman. In an unprecedented move, the debate was live-streamed. A ruling is expected within two months. Taiwan is the first Asian nation to assent to a constitutional interpretation on the legalization of same-sex marriage. The debate addressed two requests for an interpretation, filed by the Taipei City Government and gay rights advocate Chi Chia-wei (祁家威),

The first gay marriage ceremonies took place in England as a law permitting same-sex marriages came into effect on 29th March. Same sex couples rushed to tie the knot across the country, vying to be among the first ones to exchange their vows at the stroke of midnight. The Parliament of UK passed the legislation sanctioning the legality of gay marriages in England and Wales in July 2013. With the law coming into effect now, individuals who have wedded a same sex partner overseas would also be recognized as married in England and Wales. There has been overwhelming popular support for gay marriage in the UK, with multiple surveys showing that over two-thirds of Britons approve of it.. This is a significant step forward for the lesbian and gay community in England, where civil unions among same sex partners have been legal since 2005. However, unlike civil unions, marriage will give gay couples the same legal recognition as heterosexual couples over a range of areas including inheritance, pension, ...
To examine the causes of marital instability throughout the life course, six waves of data were collected between 1980 and 2000 from married individuals who were between the ages of 18 and 55 in 1980. Information collected in 1980 (Wave I) focused on the effects of wives participation in the labor force on marriage and marital instability. Measures predicting marital instability and divorce and assessing marital quality were developed. Variables include information on earnings, commitment to work, hours worked, and occupational status. The focus of Wave II, conducted in 1983, was to link changes in factors such as economic resources, wifes employment, presence of children, marital satisfaction, life goals, and health to actions intended to dissolve a marriage, such as divorce and permanent separation. Information on adjustment to marital dissolution, relationship with in-laws, size of home, parents employment, use of free time, club membership, child-care arrangements, and responsibility for ...
Sama researchers point to a need for research that better explores and addresses the connections between marriage-especially early and nonconsensual marriage-on health outcomes. The Sama researchers also call for research on the vulnerability of young girls in marital relationships, including a gendered analysis of unequal power dynamics within marriage. Critical insights from this research could lead to the development, implementation and evaluation of multi-pronged solutions that address health outcomes, while also looking at root causes of early and child marriage such as gender inequality.. If you would like to learn more about the report, read the summary or contact Sama Resource Group for Women and Health for the full report. While this research was preliminary, Sama is currently engaged in more in-depth research on the overlap between early and child marriage and mental health outcomes.. ...
Advocates of same-sex marriage, who had been far outnumbered as demonstrators two years earlier, were a large and constant presence in the State House throughout the 2004 convention, coordinated by MassEquality, an umbrella organization formed to respond to the public backlash against Goodridge. They had mobilized constituent telephone calls with increasing success in the weeks before the convention and emphasized the impact on children being raised by gay parents.[52] The amendments proponents drew support from Massachusetts Citizens for Life and larger donations than they had previously received, along with personal lobbying in localities.[53] The Legislature met in joint session as a constitutional convention on February 11, and after six hours of debate rejected two amendments, one proposed by House Speaker Thomas M. Finneran and the other by Senate President Robert E. Travaglini. Both banned same-sex marriage, one made civil unions possible and the other established civil unions. Finneran ...

N1 - Publisher Copyright: © 2018 Seongsoo Choi.. PY - 2018. Y1 - 2018. N2 - BACKGROUND Since the mid-1990s, South Korea has undergone two remarkable social changes: a large-scale expansion in higher education and a transition to lowest-low fertility. These changes offer an appropriate quasi-experimental setting for the causal inferences of the impacts of college education on transitions into marriage and parenthood. OBJECTIVE I examine the effects of the large-scale college expansion on first marriage and first childbirth, using data from South Korea. METHODS I define two cohorts of women depending on their exposure to the expansion (preexpansion versus post-expansion), and from this I identify a marginal group affected by the college expansion. Using a difference-in-difference approach, I examine how marriage and childbirth changes in this ...

One of the best christian marriage quotes that captures marriage is by mignon mclaughlin when he stated, a successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person. The agenda of 1 Saralyn Chesnut is director of the offices of lgbt life. The issue of same-sex marriage is on many Americans minds this election year. We have heard arguments for and against a proposed Federal Marriage Amendment (FMA) that would define marriage as between a man and a woman only. Voters in Missouri and Louisiana already have ratified state constitutional amendments that prohibit same-sex marriage, and on Nov. 2 voters in 11 additional states will decide whether to do the same. Georgia is one of these 11. Yet Georgias Amendment 1 is not really about same-sex marriage, which is already prohibited under Georgias 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Support-ers of Amendment 1 purport to be worried about activist judges who might overturn the law, but in reality, same-sex marriage is not on the horizon in the state of Georgia. No, even Georgia voters who do not approve of same-sex marriage can-and should-vote against Amendment 1. Here are five reasons why:. 1) The Amendment 1 ...

Ive often criticized the Christian Rights policies on marriage. My complaints are:. 1) They ignore the true threat to marriage and parents rights-the family law system.. 2) They do nothing to defend fathers rights, which are particularly vulnerable under the current system.. 3) They bash gays, who havent done anything to anybody and deserve to be left in peace.. 4) They waste an appalling amount of time and effort on non-issues like gay marriage while millions of children have been needlessly separated from the fathers they love and need.. The latest is a new New Jersey campaign from the National Organization for Marriage. Many individuals want marriage at some point in their life. Studies show there are many benefits to marriage. Dear Cecil:. The continuing controversy over gay marriage has gotten me thinking about regular old marriage. Why do we have marriage laws at all? What business is it of the government who I shack up with? And why do gays want to get entangled in an institution that, judging from the example of Murphy Brown et al, many heterosexuals would just as soon dispense with?. - SWM looking to stay that way, Chicago. Cecil replies:. Good point. Gay men and lesbians are often portrayed as subverting the social order. But what are they trying to do? Join the military! Get married! Fix up the house and raise kids! In short, build the kind of world the religious right dreams of, except that the basic social unit is a happily married couple of the same sex.. No one disputes that the original purpose of the marriage laws was to facilitate procreation. But is this objective obsolete? Lots of people think so. The present law of marriage is based on an outmoded appreciation of marriage as it operates in ...

URBANA, Ill. - Until the U.S. Supreme Courts Obergefell v. Hodges decision in 2015 provided federal recognition of same-sex marriage in the United States, individual state laws varied. Some states were clear on whether or not they would recognize the marriages of same-sex couples, and others were in an uncertain flux, in some instances legalizing, then backpedaling on the decision days later. Some married couples thus faced uncertainty about whether their union would continue to be legally valid.

In many traditional societies, womens age at marriage acts simultaneously as a gateway to new family roles and the likelihood of producing offspring. However, inadequate attention has previously been given to the broader health and social implications of variability in womens marriage age for public health. Biomedical scientists have primarily been concerned with whether the onset of reproduction occurs before the woman is adequately able to nurture her offspring and maintain her own health. Social scientists have argued that early marriage prevents women from attaining their rightful education, accessing employment and training opportunities, developing social relationships with peers, and participating in civic life. The aim of this review article is to provide comprehensive research evidence on why womens marriage age, independent of age at first childbirth, is a crucial issue for public health. It focuses on data from four South Asian countries, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Pakistan, in which
Wives inability to fall asleep at night has interpersonal consequences in marriage. The quality of interactions among married couples is affected by wives inability to fall asleep at night, but not by husbands sleep problems, suggests new research that will be presented Monday, June 13, in Minneapolis, Minn., at SLEEP 2011, the 25th Anniversary Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies LLC (APSS).. Results show that, among wives, taking longer to fall asleep at night predicted their reports of more negative and less positive marital interactions the next day, and it also predicted their husbands reports of less positive marital interaction ratings the following day. In contrast, husbands sleep did not affect their own or their wifes report of next days marital interactions.. We found that wives sleep problems affect her own and her spouses marital functioning the next day, and these effects were independent of depressive symptoms, said principal investigator Wendy M. ...

Caitlyn Jordan , The Observer Stephen Macedo speaks in defense of same-sex marriage Tuesday night. Macedo took part in a debate with Ryan Anderson, who argued same-sex marriage leads to the deterioration of American families.Only a quarter of Americans supported same-sex marriage 20 years ago, but today, around two-thirds of the population is in favor of it, according to Macedo. There is a difference, Macedo said, between the sacrament of marriage and civil marriage and how they combine to form the public meaning of marriage. People want to get married, not just because its a matter of private commitment to another person, but because they want it to be recognized that theyve entered into this public commitment, he said. The law facilitates this recognition. You wear a ring - its very public. The EurasiaNet piece (and the report it cites) on early marriage in Tajikistan, as well as other similar pieces on underage marriage elsewhere in the world, points to an important issue. Equally important is the ability to see the practice of early marriage as motivated by more than just religion or culture. But early marriage is not the only consequence of strained economic times. What is missing from this discussion is that marriage has often been traditionally as much an economic contract between two individuals and two families as a religious contract or a bond of love within legal parameters for reproduction and social harmony. Thus, poverty cannot only lead to young girls being married off to much older men but also women, over the marriageable legal age of a particular country, marrying far older men, entering polygamous relationships (which the Eurasia Foundation report notes) or even temporary marriages. Marriage, for many women facing financial burdens or uncertainty, becomes seen as a ...
Child marriage in the United States refers to a marriage in the United States where at least one party is under the age of 18.[1] Between 2000 and 2015, over 200,000 minors were legally married in the United States.[2] The vast majority of child marriages were between a child and an adult.[3][2] The majority of married children were girls.[2] As of January 2019, 48 out of 50 U.S. states have exceptions in their laws which allow children to marry (In 2018, Delaware[4] and New Jersey[5] became the first two states to completely ban child marriage). The minimum age for marriage in the United States is set by each state, and 17 of the U.S. states do not have a legal minimum age of marriage. Individuals aged 18 have the free ability to marry in the US states, except in Nebraska (19) and Mississippi (21). In addition, no state, except Delaware and New Jersey, forbid minors to marry in certain circumstances, such as parental consent, judicial consent, pregnancy, or a combination of these situations. The policy and program discourse related to early marriage (i.e., marriage before age 18) has increased significantly in India during the past decade.
Marriage is a social institution governed by norms and expectations, and situated within a social context of intricate kin networks. This chapter discusses the courtship patterns, family support for the union, and the role of marriage preparation in sustaining contemporary marriages. Contemporary marriages are increasingly dominated by individual interests and expected to meet personal needs of self-fulfilment and happiness. Women who married for romantic love were more likely to remain married, and those who married for reasons of economic security or to secure housing were more likely to be divorced. Of equal significance is the role of marriage preparation in preparing the script for navigating modern marital relationship. One of the functions of courtship is to facilitate marriage preparation. The chapter focuses on the spouse selection. It surfaces the empirical support for many hypotheses linking marital choices and marriage stability. Keywords: courtship patterns; marriage preparation; modern
A federal judge struck down Nebraskas ban on same-sex marriage in a decision handed down Monday.. U.S. District Court Judge Joseph Bataillon found Nebraska law prohibiting same-sex marriage facially discriminates based on gender and cannot withstand constitutional scrutiny.. Nebraskas Defense of Marriage Constitutional Amendment, Section 29, is an unabashedly gender-specific infringement of the equal rights of its citizens, Bataillon wrote. The State primarily offers as its rational basis for this gender-specific discrimination the encouragement of biological family units. The essence of this rationale has been rejected by most courts and by no less than the Supreme Court. With the advent of modern science and modern adoption laws, same sex couples can and do responsibly raise children. Unfortunately, this law inhibits their commendable efforts.. ...
Modern culture would have you believe that everyone has a soul-mate; that romance is the most important part of a successful marriage; that marriage does not mean til death do us part, but merely for as long as my needs are being met; and that when serious differences arise, divorce is the best solution. According to the Bible, all of these modern-day assumptions miss what marriage is all about. In The Meaning of Marriage, Timothy Keller, along with Kathy, his wife of forty years, draws a profound portrait of marriage from the pages of Scripture that neither idealizes nor rejects the institution but points us back to the relationship between God and man. The result is a vision for marriage that is refreshingly frank and unsentimental, yet hopeful and beautiful. This six-session video Bible study is for anyone from singles, to couples considering marriage, to those who have been married recently or for a long time. The six sessions are: The Secret of Marriage The Essence of Marriage The Mission of
Anyone who has married an immigrant may be wondering what is marriage fraud. Marriage fraud is a common concern amongst individuals who are marrying an immigrant who is trying to become a citizen. Some people find that they have become victims of marriage fraud without even realizing it.. Marriage fraud is an act of marriage that occurs with a desire for an advance in lifestyle rather than love. Many immigrants find it extremely difficult to obtain citizenship on their own. They will turn to marriage in order to receive a valid citizenship, because it is an easier process. The married couple will have to prove their knowledge of each other, show finances that they share, and clearly demonstrate the need for their spouse to achieve citizen status. The couple will have to go through an aggressive interview process with the immigration board before a citizenship is awarded. A good indication of marriage fraud would be the desire or act of divorce after a two year period of marriage. If the couple ...
The three essays in this dissertation examine issues related to family structure and marriage in Sub-Saharan Africa. The first two essays explore how family structures influence childrens outcomes. The third essay focuses on the data quality of marriage histories collected in a longitudinal survey. The first essay examines whether the timing and type of orphanhood is associated with early sexual debut and early marriage among 12-19-year-old adolescents in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Malawi, and Uganda. I also test whether education mediates orphans risk of early sexual initiation and early marriage. Discrete-time event history models suggest that female double orphans, regardless of timing of orphanhood, have greater odds of early sexual debut than do nonorphans. Education explains little of their increased risk. In contrast, male orphans of any type reveal no increased vulnerability to early sexual debut. Uganda is the only country where female orphans, specifically double orphans and those who are paternal
I find it very, very hard to believe that a Conservative Muslim voted in favor of gay marriage. Islam is clear on homosexuality, and several Muslim countries impose the death penalty for homosexuality. I saw the Pew Research a few months ago citing that most European Muslims believe homosexual behavior is immoral.. Id be surprised if six Christian American Republican Congressmen or Senators supported gay marriage. Yet Im supposed to believe ALL six Muslim MPs did? (I find it hard to believe there are only six Muslim MPs in Germany in the first place, given the influx of refugees...). So is it really true that all of Germanys Muslim MPs voted in favor of same-sex marriage?. ...
There are times when our two boys act just like an old married couple.. They bicker. They snipe at one another. And then they do something that reminds you how much they have in common and that they really do love each other.. I took this photo in a Citroen dealership after we had been out for lunch with my family last weekend. At first glance it brought to mind an old married couple out for a Sunday drive, bickering all the way. In actual fact, the boys had been studiously evaluating the interior and features of every car in the showroom in a manner that would put Top Gear to shame. They were having a whale of a time.. For all that they will argue on a frequent basis, their common love of cars and the London Underground plus a genuine affection for one another means that, underneath all the niggling, they are close as siblings and always likely to remain so no matter where they both end up. A bit like an old married couple. I hope so, anyway.. ...
The decisions address different issues, and neither declares a broad constitutional right to same-sex marriage that covers residents of all 50 states. But in each case, acting on the final day of the term that began last October, a 5-4 court majority endorsed a position that helps the same-sex marriage cause, as well as individual couples.. Were proud of you guys, President Obama said in a broadcast telephone call from Air Force One to the two same-sex couples who had contested Proposition 8, and were proud to have this in California.. The Proposition 8 case involved a challenge to the 2008 California ballot measure that banned same-sex marriage. On Wednesday, the court concluded that the supporters of the California ban lacked the legal standing to defend the measure. For same-sex couples in California, the real-world result could be theyre able to secure marriage licenses within about 25 days, once an appellate court takes a necessary procedural step.. As soon as they lift the stay, ...
This study aimed to determine the changing prevalence of consanguineous marriage in India between two national-level surveys. The primary hypothesis was whether region of residence and religious affiliation continue to play a significant role in determining consanguineous marriage even after controlling other potentially significant confounding variables. Data from the 81,781 and 85,851 ever-married women during the National Family and Health Surveys (NFHS) survey periods 1992-1993 (NFHS-1) and 2015-2016 (NFHS-4), respectively, were used in the analysis. Multinomial and binary logistic regression analyses examined determinants of consanguineous marriage types and of paternal and maternal first-cousin marriages, respectively. In both analyses a systematic model-building procedure was adopted. Altogether, four models were estimated. In the final model (model 4) of both the analyses, all respondent background characteristics (region of residence, religious affiliation, sociodemographic, household wealth)
Polygamy remains one of the key topics in various societies. It is through cultural practices, beliefs and also on the individuals choices that people decide to be committed to polygamy lifestyles. In several parts of Africa, polygamy is not only a marriage of choice but a value system that inspires and shapes family relations. With the discourse of rights, in particular womens rights, unstoppable coming to the fore, the practice of polygamy stands seriously challenged and its future is in grave doubt. However, polygamy remains widespread across the world.1 There are consequences to each type of marriage that certain individuals might adapt to. Women who have entered into polygamous marriages have different experiences that can be enriching to those who practice monogamy. This dissertation will highlight what people in polygamous marriages in the Gambia face on a daily basis. This dissertation will not argue that there are more disadvantages for women who are in polygamous marriages than there ...
The UN Commission on Status of Women, Session 57, debated inclusion of child marriage in agreement on eliminating violence against women, as Malawi seeks to raise its legal age of marriage from 15 to 18. More than 140 million girls will become child brides by 2020 if current rates of early marriage continue, according to the UN.. Of that number of girls aged under 18, 50 million will be younger than 15, says the UN Population Fund, which co-hosted a panel on child marriage at the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) on Thursday.. Although rates of child marriage vary between and within countries, most take place in rural sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia.. In south Asia, nearly half of young women are married by their 18th birthday. In sub-Saharan Africa the figure is more than one-third.. Nine of the 10 countries with the highest rates of child marriage are in Africa. Niger has the highest rate, at 75%, followed by Chad and Central African Republic at 68%, Guinea at 63%, Mozambique at 56%, ...

The marriage equality movement in the United States has been fueled by the strategic and coordinated efforts of legal groups, advocacy organizations, and a small but active community of grantmakers. The historic U.S. Supreme Court rulingon June 26 to extend marriage equality nationwide was preceded by a gradual legislative sea change and a dramatic shift in public opinion. In 2001, a majority of Americans opposed the idea of allowing same-sex couples to marry. In 2015, polls showed a reversal of the numbers, with 57 percent of Americans favoring marriage equality.. One of the key funders behind this shift was the Civil Marriage Collaborative (CMC), an initiative of the Proteus Fund that has partnered with individual donors and foundations to award roughly $2 million in grants each year since 2004 for a broad range of publicly visible education activities aimed at advancing marriage equality. In the wake of the Supreme Courts decision to uphold same-sex marriage as a constitutional right, its ...

Beginning in the late 1930s, a crisis in colonial Gusiiland developed over traditional marriage customs. Couples eloped, wives deserted husbands, fathers forced daughters into marriage, and desperate men abducted women as wives. Existing historiography focuses on women who either fled their rural homes to escape a new dual patriarchy-African men backed by colonial officials-or surrendered themselves to this new power. Girl Cases: Marriage and Colonialism in Gusiiland, Kenya 1890-1970 takes a new approach to the study of Gusii marriage customs and shows that Gusii women stayed in their homes to fight over the nature of marriage. Gusii women and their lovers remained committed to traditional bridewealth marriage, but they raised deeper questions over the relations between men and women.. During this time of social upheaval, thousands of marriage disputes flowed into local African courts. By examining court transcripts, Girl Cases sheds light on the dialogue that developed surrounding the ...

Juneau - Monday, the Alaska House of Representatives passed legislation sponsored by Representative Matt Claman (D-Anchorage) that amends the Alaska Marriage Code to add language that allows for marriages to be solemnized by elected officials of the state of Alaska.. Under current Alaska statute, marriage may only be solemnized by a minister, priest, rabbi, or commissioned officer of the Salvation Army, a marriage commissioner or judicial officer, or any religious organization or congregation. With recent court closures, adding elected officials to this list provides Alaskans an easily accessible marriage option to perform the ceremony without having to go through the time-consuming process of arranging for a marriage commissioner appointment. This change particularly improves access to marriage solemnization in rural areas with fewer officials pre-approved by the state. For instance, if a couple in a remote Alaskan village are set to be married and the minister becomes ill, an elected official ...
The issue of taxation has been integral to the debate about same-sex marriage. In United States v. Windsor, the Supreme Court held that restricting marriage and spouse to opposite-sex couples for estate tax purposes was unconstitutional. In the 2013 ruling, the court threw out the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996, which contained the restriction. The case involved Edith Windsor and Thea Spyer of New York who were legally married in Canada in 2007. Spyer died in 2009, leaving her estate to Windsor, who claimed the federal estate tax exemption for surviving spouses. The IRS rejected the claim, prompting the court case.. Looking ahead, the tax implications for gay couples and the resulting revenue from state income taxes are harder to calculate than the immediate sales tax impact of a surge in new weddings. For example, the Williams Institute report said that homeownership generally is lower among single people than married couples. It is also lower for unmarried same-sex couples than married ...
The fight over same-sex marriage reaches a climax in March, when the U.S. Supreme Court has scheduled argument on Californias Proposition 8 and on the federal Defense of Marriage Act on consecutive days.
Downloadable! Abstract: Do individuals divorce for economic reasons? Can we measure the attractiveness of new matches in the marriage market? We answer these questions using a structural model of the household and a rich panel dataset from Malawi. We propose a model of the household with consumption, production and revealed preference conditions for stability on the marriage market. We define marital instability in terms of the consumption gains to remarrying another individual in the same marriage market, and to being single. We find that a 1 percentage point increase in the wifes estimated consumption gains from remarriage is significantly associated with a 0.6 percentage point increase in divorce probability in the next three years. In a multinomial model, higher values of consumption gains from remarriage raise the odds of divorce and remarriage but not of divorce and singleness. These findings provide out-of-sample validation of the structural model and shed new light on the economic determinants
Periodontitis is defined as an inflammatory disease of supporting tissues of teeth characterized by progressive destruction of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. Periodontal manifestations of these genetic disorders or syndromes, such as familial and cyclic neutropenias, granulomatous disease, agranulocytosis, Langerhans cell disease, glycogen storage disease, hypophosphatasia, leucocyte adhesion deficiency, and Papillon‐Lefèvre, Chédiak‐Higashi, Cohen, Ehlers‐Danlos, Marfan, Down, Haim‐Munk, and Kindlers syndromes, imitate some types of periodontal diseases. Most of these syndromes have autosomal‐recessive characterization and can be seen commonly in consanguineous marriages. Therefore, consanguineous marriages have generally been accepted as having important detrimental effects on offspring. There is a lot of genetic research about consanguineous marriage and its detrimental effects on offspring. Although consanguineous marriages are common in the world, the relationship with

Dear Cecil:. In this brave new (Western) world of marriage equality, why is polygamy still illegal? Ive read all the usual arguments, which assume only heterosexual males would want multiple partners; successful men will monopolize all the marriageable women, leaving gangs of undesirable bachelors roaming the countryside; etc. They all seem like complete bullshit in the 21st-century U.S. Whats the real reason?. - Jason. Cecil replies:. Man, the polygamy bandwagon is really picking up steam - no less than Chief Justice John Roberts pitched the idea last year in his dissent in Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court decision affirming same-sex marriage. Roberts argued, essentially, why stop here? From the standpoint of history and tradition, he wrote, a leap from opposite-sex marriage to same-sex marriage is much greater than one from a two-person union to plural unions, which have deep roots in some cultures around the world. He was being rhetorical, sure - that scamp - but still, a ...
Marriage used to be practically universal, but now persists as an institution for only some groups, while others choose non-marital fertility. This paper posits that if one role of marriage is to insure one partners investment in children, then home-ownership can be seen as providing the necessary collateral for this contract. As easier divorce and paternity enforcement outside of marriage have reduced the relative strength of the marital contract, the division of assets, particularly the family home, post-separation has remained unique to marriage. We provide a model where husbands can ante up the marital home to elicit more optimal child investments, whose costs are born mostly by the mother, by reducing the chance of divorce while providing consumption insurance to their partner. This, in turn, increases the value of marriage for those able to access this collateralized version of the contract. The model predicts that individuals able to buy a home at the time of marriage will invest ...
Child marriage has become a common practice in the rural areas of Balochistan. The ratio is increasing day by day. It has eventually got merged as a custom for most of the areas, whereas, some others have other reasons to get their young daughters married. It is, however, a clear violation of human rights.. According to Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, 22.82 per cent children are deprived of schooling out of which 32 per cent are the victims of child marriages. As per local estimates, they were compelled to leave their studies, either by their parents or the opposite sides.. However, it is shocking to know that small children_ approximately 10 to 12 ages_ are forced to marry with old men. How come a child of 10 to 12 years manage with an old man of more than 40 years? It is a serious violation of Human Rights but who cares!. A research indicates that marrying a child at early age when physically and mentally immature is very detrimental and unbearabe. Because these children never really ...

Few marital problems cause as much heartache and devastation as infidelity, which undermines the foundation of marriage itself. However, when both spouses are committed to authentic healing, most marriages survive and many marriages become stronger with deeper levels of intimacy.. Infidelity isnt a single, clearly defined situation - and whats considered infidelity varies among couples and even between partners in a relationship. For example, is an emotional connection without physical intimacy considered infidelity? What about online relationships? Individuals and couples need to define for themselves what constitutes infidelity in the context of their marriage.. Many factors can contribute to infidelity, and most arent fundamentally about sex. The Vermont Marriage Advisory Council recently sponsored a forum at the University of Vermont, entitled, Does Traditional Marriage Matter? FRC Senior Fellow Dr. Pat Fagan, Director for Marriage and Religion, presented a host of data from the social sciences which deal directly with the institution of marriage and the implications of genderless marriage. The VMACs website contains a video of Dr. Fagans presentation, The Right of the Child to the Marriage of His Parents.
A recent post by [email protected] on Main Street Plaza caused me to reflect on the strength of interfaith marriages. I had hoped to generate a follow-up post on this topic at MSP. However, since the comments on the [email protected] post devolved into a blame game of whether the believer or non-believer was more responsible for marital dissolution, I decided it was probably best to avoid a second opportunity for mud-slinging. Differences in religious belief can be the death knell to a marriage. For that reason, many organized religions strongly advocate against being yoked with unbelievers. This is not only a Mormon phenomenon; you see this in any faith tradition that teaches that they alone have exclusive access to God. Even before marriage, it is rare for the unmarried, devout Mormon to even consider dating (let alone marrying) a non-Mormon; most LDS women raised in the Church are taught from an early age to make a temple marriage to a returned missionary their primary goal. Likewise, in the Catholic Church, marriage to

The percentage of marriages ending in divorce increases more rapidly in the first 10 years of marriage than the 10 years after that. Once the 20th wedding anniversary is reached, the percentage increases less rapidly.. Conversely, the percentage of marriages that end because one spouse has died increases less rapidly in the first 40 years of marriage than the 10 years after that. This is because people are more likely to die at older ages, so mortality has a bigger impact on those who have been married for a long time.. However, while 42% of all marriages are estimated to end eventually in divorce, other factors are likely to influence the likelihood of divorce for individuals, including:. ...
By now, youve probably seen a certain political cartoon. It comes in several variants, but the basic premise is always the same. Basically, it juxtaposes a straight persons adamance in protecting his or her marriage from same-sex marriage with obliviousness or willful laziness in regard to those more realistic and immediate threats of their own making, such as adultery, drinking, abusiveness, emotional distance, poor sexual intimacy or compatibility, getting married far too soon or too young, or just the overall rate of divorce amongst straight couples. One version contrasts the threat of same-sex marriage against the supposed threat presented by quickie celebrity marriages, such as those of our sacrificial pop culture whipping girls like Kim Kardashian or Britney Spears.. Funny how theyre always mocked for this, but not their husbands. Slut-shaming writ large.. You may have also seen a witty political outreach campaign asserting the message same-sex marriage does not threaten our ...
In particular, Holder will no longer defend Section 3 of the law that defines what the federal government will recognize as a marriage or spouse. Section 3 was ruled unconstitutional back in July of last year by U.S. District Court Judge Joseph L. Tauro, in Boston. The Department of Justice appealed the decision in October, but now apparently will abandon that appeal..
