On the basis of phenotypical characteristics and analysis of 16S rRNA sequence, a new species belonging to a new genus is described, and the name Marinobacter hydrocarbonoclasticus is proposed. This organism, isolated from Mediterranean seawater near a petroleum refinery, is a gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium. It grows at NaCl concentrations of 0.08 to 3.5 M and uses various hydrocarbons as the sole source of carbon and energy. Its DNA has a guanine-plus-cytosine content of 52.7 mol%. The 16S rRNA analysis shows a clear affiliation between M. hydrocarbonoclasticus and the gamma group of the phylum Proteobacteria. A close phylogenetic relationship appears among the species Marinomonas vaga, Oceanospirillum linum, Halomonas elongata, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Because of the impossibility of finding a single most closely related species, we suggest that this bacterium be assigned to a new genus, at least temporarily. A Gram-negative marine bacterium, designated strain En6T, was isolated from seawater of the East Sea of Korea. The organism grew in 1-25 % (w/v) NaCl and at 10-37 °C and pH 5.3-9.3, with optimal growth occurring in 4-5 % NaCl and at 25-30 °C and pH 7.5. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain En6T placed this bacterium in the clade Marinobacter within the class Gammaproteobacteria. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain En6T and Marinobacter lipolyticus SM19T, the most closely related species, was 98.4 %, and the level of DNA-DNA relatedness between the two strains was 22 %. On the basis of the phylogenetic analysis and phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data, strain En6T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Marinobacter. The name Marinobacter goseongensis sp. nov. is proposed, with strain En6T (=KCTC 12515T=DSM 19471T) as the type strain.

Microorganisms are capable of producing advanced biofuels that can be used as drop-in alternatives to conventional liquid fuels. However, vital physiological processes and membrane properties are often disrupted by the presence of biofuel and limit the production yields. In order to make microbial biofuels a competitive fuel source, finding mechanisms for improving resistance to the toxic effects of biofuel production is vital. This investigation aims to identify resistance mechanisms from microorganisms that have evolved to withstand hydrocarbon-rich environments, such as those that thrive near natural oil seeps and in oil-polluted waters. The knowledge of the preferred substrates for each WS allows the use of yeast cells for the production of wax esters that are high-value materials and can be used in a variety of industrial applications. Here, heterologous WSs derived from five different organisms were successfully expressed and evaluated for their substrate preference in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We analyzed gabbroic and dioritic rocks from the Atud igneous complex in the Eastern Desert of Egypt to understand better the formation of juvenile continental crust of the Arabian-Nubian Shield. The effect of L. anguillarum and V. splendidus on the bacterial community associated with rotifers and seawater of rearing tanks was analysed by DGGE of PCR-amplified 16S rDNA fragments.
