Marburg virus disease (MVD; formerly Marburg hemorrhagic fever) is a severe illness of humans and non-human primates caused by either of the two marburgviruses, Marburg virus (MARV) and Ravn virus (RAVV). MVD is a viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF), and the clinical symptoms are indistinguishable from Ebola virus disease (EVD). Marburg virus disease (MVD) is the official name listed in the World Health Organizations International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10 (ICD-10) for the human disease caused by any of the two marburgviruses Marburg virus (MARV) and Ravn virus (RAVV). In the scientific literature, Marburg hemorrhagic fever (MHF) is often used as an unofficial alternative name for the same disease. Both disease names are derived from the German city Marburg, where MARV was first discovered. The most detailed study on the frequency, onset, and duration of MVD clinical signs and symptoms was performed during the 1998-2000 mixed MARV/RAVV disease outbreak. A ...

We conducted two antibody surveys to assess risk factors for Marburg hemorrhagic fever in an area of confirmed Marburg virus transmission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Questionnaires were administered and serum samples tested for Marburg-specific antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Fifteen (2%) of 912 participants in a general village cross-sectional antibody survey were positive for Marburg immunoglobulin G antibody. Thirteen (87%) of these 15 were men who worked in the local gold mines. Working as a miner (odds ratio [OR] 13.9, 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.1 to 62.1) and receiving injections (OR 7.4, 95% CI 1.6 to 33.2) were associated with a positive antibody result. All 103 participants in a targeted antibody survey of healthcare workers were antibody negative. Primary transmission of Marburg virus to humans likely occurred via exposure to a still unidentified reservoir in the local mines. Secondary transmission appears to be less common with Marburg virus than with Ebola
Ebola and Marburg virus diseases are rare but often deadly diseases that are caused by the Ebola or Marburg virus. A person who is sick with one of these viruses can spread the infection to others. These are known as hemorrhagic viruses, because they can cause severe bleeding.. These viruses started in Africa, and that is where most cases of the disease have happened. Infections have occurred in other parts of the world when people with the disease travelled there.. For the most up-to-date news about Ebola or Marburg outbreaks, check the Government of Canada website (www.healthycanadians.gc.ca/diseases-conditions-maladies-affections/disease-maladie/ebola/index-eng.php) or the Public Health Agency of Canada website (www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/id-mi/vhf-fvh/marburg-eng.php).. ...
23 March 2005. Laboratory tests have identified Marburg virus as the causative agent in an outbreak of suspected viral haemorrhagic fever in Angola. Virus was detected 21 March in samples from nine of twelve fatal cases.. Retrospective analysis has now identified 102 cases in the outbreak, which dates back to October 2004. Of these cases, 95 have been fatal.. Most cases are presently concentrated in Uige Province in the northern part of the country (see map below).. Since the start of the outbreak, the monthly number of cases has progressively increased, but this increase could be the result of intensified surveillance. Around 75% of cases have occurred in children under the age of 5 years. Cases in adults include a small number of health care workers.. Marburg virus disease has no vaccine or curative treatment, and can be rapidly fatal. In the present outbreak, most deaths have occurred between 3 to 7 days following the onset of symptoms.. Past outbreaks indicate that close contact with bodily ...

Marburg hemorrhagic fever is a severe and potentially fatal disease in humans first recognized in 1967. It is caused by an RNA virus of the Filoviridae family and is understood to be endemic to Africa. The Marburg virus is classified as a Category A bioterrorism agent by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and in 2006 was determined by DHS to be a material threat to national security and public health. There are currently no treatments for Marburg virus infection beyond supportive care. Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Sarepta Therapeutics, a developer of innovative RNA-based therapeutics, announced positive safety results from a Phase I multiple ascending dose study of AVI-7288 in healthy volunteers. AVI-7288 is the companys lead drug candidate for the treatment of Marburg virus infection.. ...
We used seven environmental variables in this model prediction. This was after assessing for collinearity in the model and removing all the collinear variables. Variable contribution assessment as shown in Table 2 showed that rainfall variables were the most important predictors. The importance of rainfall or precipitation and moderate to high temperature was highlighted by Peterson et al (2004) when they modeled filovirus distribution in Africa using GARP model29,31. Rainfall is important for the obvious reason that it provides water which is very important for bats survival52,53. Rainfall also provides for the development of fruiting trees that provide roosting areas for bats as well as food for fruit bats. Uganda is endowed with many water bodies and several rainforests, and hence bat distribution tends to be all over the country as seen in Figure 2A. Bats are hypothesized to be reservoirs for filoviruses; their distribution tends to correlate with that of filovirus predicted niches (Figure ...
By: Raul Reyes , Sunday, April 23, 2017 7:20 AM. An antibody treatment successfully protected nonhuman primates against the deadly Marburg and Ravn viruses even when given five days after becoming infected, according to the latest findings of a collaborative team from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc., and Vanderbilt University. The findings are now available in Science Translational Medicine.. There are currently no vaccines or drugs approved for human use to protect against the Marburg and Ravn viruses. These two filoviruses, which are in the same virus family as Ebola, cause severe and often lethal disease in people. The average case fatality rate of Marburg virus disease since the first recognized outbreak in 1967 is 80 percent.. Monoclonal antibodies are a technology that is currently in wide use for treating autoimmune diseases and cancers. There are more than 45 monoclonal antibodies approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and ...
MVD is clinically indistinguishable from Ebola virus disease (EVD), and it can also easily be confused with many other diseases prevalent in Equatorial Africa, such as other viral hemorrhagic fevers, falciparum malaria, typhoid fever, shigellosis, rickettsial diseases such as typhus, cholera, gram-negative septicemia, borreliosis such as relapsing fever or EHEC enteritis. Other infectious diseases that ought to be included in the differential diagnosis include leptospirosis, scrub typhus, plague, Q fever, candidiasis, histoplasmosis, trypanosomiasis, visceral leishmaniasis, hemorrhagic smallpox, measles, and fulminant viral hepatitis. Non-infectious diseases that can be confused with MVD are acute promyelocytic leukemia, hemolytic uremic syndrome, snake envenomation, clotting factor deficiencies/platelet disorders, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, Kawasaki disease, and even warfarin intoxication.[26][27][28][29] The most important indicator that may ...
More than 25 years have passed since the discovery of a filovirus, Marburg virus, which caused an epidemic of hemorrhagic fever among laboratory workers in Marburg, Germany, in 1967. The persons affected had contact with the blood or tissues of monkeys or with other infected persons. Marburg virus has reappeared only three times since its discovery, with the largest and most recent outbreak occurring in 1999 in Durba, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Ebola virus, another filovirus, was first described in 1976 during two hemorrhagic fever epidemics in Zaire and Sudan. Since then, Ebola virus has caused large hospital outbreaks of hemorrhagic fever in Kikwit, Zaire, in 1995, and Gulu, Uganda, in 2000. Ebola virus has also been implicated in small chains of transmission among persons with direct contact with intermediary hosts, mostly nonhuman primates in the central African countries of Gabon and Republic of the Congo.. The reservoirs for both viruses are still unknown, and the rarity of ...
The work, by researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the Galveston National Laboratory, and the J. Craig Venter Institute, could lead to a better understanding of these viruses, paving the way for new treatments down the road.. Using a laboratory technique called deep sequencing, investigators set out to investigate filovirus replication and transcription, processes involved in the virus life cycle. They studied the same Ebola virus species currently responsible for an outbreak in West Africa, and also analyzed a related filovirus, Marburg virus, that caused a large outbreak in Angola in 2005 and recently emerged in Uganda. The scientists infected both a monkey and human cell line with both viruses, and analyzed the genetic material produced by each virus, called RNA.. Their results highlight regions in Ebola and Marburg virus RNAs where the polymerase of the virus (a protein that synthesizes the viral RNA) stutters at specific locations, adding extra nucleotides (molecules ...

Army scientists have demonstrated, for the first time, that antibody-based therapies can successfully protect monkeys from the deadly Ebola and Marburg viruses. In addition, the animals were fully protected even when treatment was administered two days post-infection, an accomplishment unmatched by any experimental therapy for these viruses to date. The work appears in this weeks electronic edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.. The filoviruses, Ebola and Marburg, cause hemorrhagic fever with human case fatality rates as high as 90 percent. They are a global health concern and are considered potential biological threat agents. Currently there are no available vaccines or therapies approved for use in humans, making the development of such products a high priority.. In the article, John M. Dye, Andrew S. Herbert, William D. Pratt, and colleagues from the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) describe using antibody from monkeys that had ...
Porton Down houses two separate sites capable of conducting high containment research on ACDP (Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens) Hazard Group 4 agents: the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and the Health Protection Agency (HPA), and filovirus research has been performed at Porton Down since the first Marburg virus disease outbreak in 1967. All work is conducted within primary containment either within cabinet lines (for in vitro work) or large rigid half-suit isolators (for in vivo work). There are extensive aerobiological facilities at high containment and the use of these facilities will be reported. Research at Dstl is primarily focused on assessing and quantifying the hazard, and testing the efficacy of medical countermeasures against filoviruses. Fundamental research directed to the study and understanding of the infectious and pathogenic nature of the filoviruses, particularly in aerosols, will be reported.

Try to stick to what you actually said. X and Y are part of class A. You said X was a cousin of A. Now youre saying X is a cousin of Y. Yes, Marburg and Zaire are "cousins" of a sort. What you actually said, however, was that Marburg and Ebola are cousins. Thats quite different.. Incidentally, no, thats not hostility. Its disgust at sloppy writing. That you needed to try to convert your rebuke by way of Auto Ad Verecundiam, and in so doing to make a buck, just Oh, and dont try to pick apart the use of the fallacies. Thats an insult, not a well meaning mistake. You wanted hostility; now youve got it. See the difference?. (And yet, I expect a "no"…). --. Marburg virus (MARV) is a virus similar to Ebola virus and also causes a hemorrhagic disease which is highly lethal. In contrast to EBOV, only a few vaccines have been developed against MARV, and researchers do not understand what kind of immune responses are required to protect from MARV. Here we show that antibodies directed against MARV after application of our vaccine protect in an animal system but fail to neutralize the virus in a... ...

Ravn began conceptually in late 2003 / early 2004, as a solo project of my 15 year old self. Eventually a former musical collaborator and friend of mine joined me as a synth player, and we created depressing, minimalistic soundscapes, with hint traces of black metal in the sound. We continued in this fashion until 2008. I had always had intentions of making the project more concrete in style, and to play shows. The opportunity presented itself when in late 2008 a black and doom metal themed festival realized its first year. I gathered musicians who I had known and worked with in the past; a drummer, and a bassist. I decided to take the double duty of guitars and vocals. Since then, we have a different bassist - but this was our first manifestation of what became todays Ravn. We played the Heart of Winter Festival I in Richmond, Virginia, at the end of December 2008, and shared the stage (or hallway in this case) with Black Anvil, Woe, Evoken, and Withered. We are comprised of members of other ...

The genera Marburgvirus and Ebolavirus were originally classified as the species of the now nonexistent Filovirus genus. In March 1998, the Vertebrate Virus Subcommittee proposed to the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) to change the Filovirus genus to Filovirus family with two specific genera: Ebola-like viruses and Marburg-like viruses. This proposal was implemented in Washington DC as of April 2001 and in Paris as of July 2002. In 2000, another proposal was made in Washington DC to change the "-like viruses" to "-virus" (e.g. Ebolavirus, Marburgvirus) in addition to renaming the only species in the Marburgvirus genus from Marburg virus to Lake Victoria Marburgvirus.[1].
