The Edwin Smith Papyrus is an ancient Egyptian medical text, named after the dealer who bought it in 1862, and the oldest known surgical treatise on trauma. This document, which may have been a manual of military surgery, describes 48 cases of injuries, fractures, wounds, dislocations and tumors. It dates to Dynasties 16-17 of the Second Intermediate Period in ancient Egypt, c. 1600 BCE. The Edwin Smith papyrus is unique among the four principal medical papyri in existence that survive today. While other papyri, such as the Ebers Papyrus and London Medical Papyrus, are medical texts based in magic, the Edwin Smith Papyrus presents a rational and scientific approach to medicine in ancient Egypt, in which medicine and magic do not conflict. Magic would be more prevalent had the cases of illness been mysterious, such as internal disease. The Edwin Smith papyrus is a scroll 4.68 meters or 15.3 feet in length. The recto (front side) has 377 lines in 17 columns, while the verso (backside) has 92 lines ...

Egyptian medical papyri are ancient Egyptian texts written on papyrus which permit a glimpse at medical procedures and practices in ancient Egypt. The papyri give details on disease, diagnosis, and remedies of disease, which include herbal remedies, surgery, and magical spells. It is thought there were more medical papyri, but many have been lost due to grave robbing. The largest study of the medical papyri to date has been undertaken by Berlin University and was titled Medizin der alten Ägypter (Medicine of ancient Egypt). Early Egyptian medicine was based mostly on a mixture of magic and religious spells. Most commonly cured by use of amulets or magical spells, the illnesses were thought to be caused by spiteful behavior or actions. Afterwards, doctors performed various medical treatments if necessary. The instructions for these medical rituals were later inscribed on papyrus scrolls by the priests performing the actions. Dated to circa 1800 BCE, the Kahun Gynaecological Papyrus is the ...
The faculty and students of the Hanover College History Department initiated the Hanover Historical Texts Project in 1995, at a time when few primary sources were available outside of published anthologies. To make primary texts readily available for classroom use, they selected important documents, scanned print versions that were out of copyright, converted the scans into HTML format, proofread the resulting documents to correct OCR errors, edited them to provide page breaks, page numbers, and bibliographical information, and posted them online. We have since expanded the collection to include transcriptions of manuscript material from the Hanover College archives.. Using hieroglyphs, the manuscript describes 48 separate observations (case studies) of brain and spinal injury as well as the treatment used in each. Altogether an extraordinary document that was probably the first to contain descriptions of various brain structures including cranial sutures, meninges, external surface (neocortex), cerebrospinal fluid, and is even the first scientific document to use the word brain ...
This article was first published in the Turkish review History of Medicine Studies (ed. Hasan Âli Göksoy, Hüsrev Hatemi, Nil Sari), Istanbul 1986, No. 1, pp. 105-112. We are grateful to Nil Sari, author of the article, for allowing its publication.. Here we are going to present the classification of mental and neurological diseases found in Turkish medical manuscripts between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries. Although there are some variations in detail among different manuscripts, I do not intend to go into the description of these details, nor am I going to compare them, for the general overview is the same. Therefore I am going to give the classification of Mukbilzâde (Zahîre-i Muradiye, 1437), whose writing on mental illness is one of the best. Also, I am going to give briefly the descriptions and symptoms of the diseases, so that it will be easier to understand the classic classification of mental diseases found in Ottoman medical manuscripts.. Before giving the classic list, I ...
The oldest of the medical papyruses is the fragmentary Kahun Papyrus, which deals with veterinary medicine and womens diseases. The Edwin Smith Papyrus (of about the seventeenth century B.C.) is concerned with surgical matters, starting at the top of the head and working down-a type of medical organization often to be seen in subsequent texts in other countries-but the text stops abruptly at mid-chest. For the most part, this document is an empiric, secular, instructional system of practice, and evidently a copy of a much more ancient treatise. The Georg Ebers Papyrus, dating from the early sixteenth century, is the longest of the medical papyruses. An extensive medical therapeutic text covering many subjects, among them pharmacologic and mechanical means of treatment, it also contains many incantations and verbal charms.. The Hearst Papyrus (about the sixteenth century B.C.), the London (fourteenth century), the Berlin (early thirteenth century), and the Chester Beatty (late thirteenth ...
In medical knowledge, Egypt leaves the rest of the world behind. (The Odyssey, Homer) This remarkable papyrus, bought in 1862 by the American Egyptologist Edwin Smith in Luxor, Egypt, is an ancient Egyptian surgical treatise. It is the oldest known medical document; written in the Middle Egyptian hieratic script, it contains 377 lines of text…
The Ebers Papyrus is written in hieratic Egyptian writing and contains the most voluminous record of ancient Egyptian medicine known. The scroll contains some 700 magical formulas and remedies. It contains many incantations meant to turn away disease-causing demons and there is also evidence of a long tradition of empiricism. The papyrus contains a treatise on the heart. It notes that the heart is the center of the blood supply, with vessels attached for every member of the body. The Egyptians seem to have known little about the kidneys and made the heart the meeting point of a number of vessels which carried all the fluids of the body-blood, tears, urine and semen. Mental disorders are detailed in a chapter of the papyrus called the Book of Hearts. Disorders such as depression and dementia are covered. The descriptions of these disorders suggest that Egyptians conceived of mental and physical diseases in much the same way. The papyrus contains chapters on contraception, diagnosis of pregnancy ...

Illustration from Dr. R.W. Felkins description of the Caesarean section. Edinburgh Medical Journal, 1884.. In Kemet (ancient Egypt), Africans were writing medical textbooks as early as 5000 years ago. This indicates not only a mature civilization but also a long period of medical development. Out of the hundreds and thousands of medical papyri that must have been written, only 10 have come down to us, the most important being the Ebers and Edwin Smith Papyri (European names to African achievements). These 10 papyri form the basis of most of what Africans in Kemet knew about medicine.. The African physicians were instructed in the per ankh or house of life which served as a university, library, medical school, clinic, temple and seminary. They were alone among the nations of antiquity in the development of specialty medicine. In the Old Kingdom, the diseases of each organ were under the care of a specialist.. A study of ancient African diagnostic methods read like a modern textbook. They had ...

The oldest medical records show that epilepsy has been affecting people at least since the beginning of recorded history.[130] Throughout ancient history, the disease was thought to be a spiritual condition.[130] The worlds oldest description of an epileptic seizure comes from a text in Akkadian (a language used in ancient Mesopotamia) and was written around 2000 BC.[22] The person described in the text was diagnosed as being under the influence of a Moon god, and underwent an exorcism.[22] Epileptic seizures are listed in the Code of Hammurabi (c. 1790 BC) as reason for which a purchased slave may be returned for a refund,[22] and the Edwin Smith Papyrus (c. 1700 BC) describes cases of individuals with epileptic convulsions.[22]. The oldest known detailed record of the disease itself is in the Sakikku, a Babylonian cuneiform medical text from 1067-1046 BC.[130] This text gives signs and symptoms, details treatment and likely outcomes,[22] and describes many features of the different seizure ...

On the death of Jutta, Hildegard was elected abbess, but she later built her own convent in Rupertsberg, near Bingen. While head of that community, she continued to write with the assistance of Volmar and also traveled, preached, and corresponded with popes, emperors and kings. She transcribed her own music, whose beauty, mystical qualities, and unexpected use of wide intervals has been compared to a Gothic cathedral. Hildegards conception of music, that it was a means for rising up to God, was analogous to that of Sufism, a tradition remote from her experience. Hildegard is considered the mother of music therapy because she praised the curative properties of music. Her death at the age of 81 years came after a long life that did not lack conflicts with authority, in which she prevailed because she was both shrewd and greatly respected. She nonetheless always declared herself a poor, weak creature and humble servant of God. Official recognition came only much later, when Pope Benedict XVI ...

The document that scholars believe the oldest treatise on medicine - the Egyptian papyrus, stores the ideas of the sages who lived almost 4000 years ago - has long been hidden in the vault of rare books the new York medical Academy. It is a remarkable heritage of culture that was already ancient when Rome was in its infancy, and Athens was a small town. Stone monuments of Egypt survived, but the majority of reed manuscripts were lost. Expert James Breasted, who translated the papyrus in the 1920-ies, called him the worlds oldest manifestation of really scientific knowledge. Soon the papyrus will be exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum at the exhibition Medicine of ancient Egypt. Here you can see scan of the mummy, surgical needles and other medical artifacts. Their knowledge of the body were incredible, although they didnt always understand it, said James Allen, curator of Egyptian art at the met.. Papyrus is clear that the ancient physicians knew that the blood pumped by the heart flows ...

Ancient medicine is not alone in having errant practices. For example, in 17th and 18th century medicine the practice of bleeding patients was still used.[94] Also, according to the British Medical Journal, only 15% of medical procedures have been reported to be supported by any documentation.[95][96] Given the existence of errant medicine throughout history up to the present day (medicine recalls, lack of documentation, etc.) and the apparent absence of errant medicine from the Pentateuch and an abundance of excellent, very advanced health and sanitation practices, the argument that the Bible contains common knowledge is implausible, even if one grants late dates for the Pentateuch and early dates for the Egyptians. The Edwin Smith Surgical Papyus is thought by most scholars to date from 1600 BC. These scholars also believe that this ancient medical treatise is a copy of a work dating from c. 3000 BC.[97] Dr. Carol Reeves argued that archaic words in the Edwin Smith Papyrus point to its being ...
Sauna, a Scandinavian word, is an ancient form of dry heat therapy that has been used around the world by many cultures throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, Central and North America. It is considered by many to be a cultural and medicinal component of social interaction and health maintenance. Among them are the Mayan sweat lodges, the Mexican temescal, the Islamic hammam, the Russian bania, the Japanese mushi-buro, the Native American sweat lodge, as well as the hot baths described in Indian Ayurvedic medical literature. Ancient Egyptian texts including the Edwin Smith Papyrus mention the use of heat therapy for tumors. Modern science has consistently studied the health effects of saunas for decades and in fact have a very strong case that it can be used in the management of heart related conditions according to a published article in the Journal of Cardiology. ...
Gerolamo Cardanos The Book on Games of Chance: The 16th-Century Treatise on Probability, in its translation by Sydney H. Gould, has been released by Dover Publications. It had previously appeared as an appendix in Oystein Ores Cardano, the Gambling Scholar. I recommend Ores book for its useful commentary on Cardano; even in translation, Cardanos book can be difficult to understand. This is especially true in light of Cardanos habit of leaving his early incorrect attempts to solve a problem in the manuscript even when the problem is later solved correctly. Because the book did not appear in print until almost a century after his death, it is of course possible that he would have revised the work had he sought to publish it himself.. Liber de ludo aleae, to give the book its Latin title, was likely written or revised in 1564; he relates a story in Chapter 26 of an incident that occurred when he was 25, and he mentions that 38 years have passed since that event. Thus this work would predate ...

Paracelsus (d. 1541). Born bout 1493 near Zurich, Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim was only later (from about 1529) called Paracelsus, an honorific name meaning greater than Celsus - that is, greater than the 1st-century AD Roman polymath. Paracelsus studied alchemy with a leading alchemist of his day and was an apprentice in Austrian mines where he learned metallurgical practices. He at one time lectured on medicine at the University of Basel, where he ignored the ancient and acknowledged authorities such as Galen and Avicenna and spoke in the vernacular Swiss-German dialter rather than the Latin customarily used in learned circles. After incurring the wrath of authorities in Basel, he traveled extensively and led a life of controversy. He died in 1541 in his late forties, after having written a large number of writings in German on philosophical, scientific, and medical topics. In the decades following his death, an influential movement developed among European ...

In 1891 Thompson moved to the United States and became professor and first chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, remaining in that position until his death. Edwin G. Krebs. Edwin G. Krebs is a soft-spoken, understated Midwesterner, but theres one thing that gets his goat. Since he turned his attention from medicine to biochemistry, people have been asking him about his cycle. They confuse him with Sir H.A. Krebs, the British scientist who won the Nobel Prize in 1953 for elucidating the metabolic Krebs (or tricarboxylic acid) cycle.. One person who made this mistake was the chairman of a clinical department at the UW School of Medicine in 1948, when Krebs started as an assistant professor of biochemistry. I must confess that I didnt correct his wrong impression, says Krebs. I was so uneasy about my status then that I enjoyed being treated with such deference, even for the wrong reason.. In 1992, Krebs and Edmond H. Fischer were awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for figuring out how reversible phosphorylation works as a switch to activate proteins and regulate various cellular processes. Their discovery was a key to unlocking ...

The fifteenth-century herbal??Der Gart der Gesundheit differs from Hildegard in classifying tansy as hot and dry in the first degree, rather than moist; it recommends tansy as a diuretic and vermifuge, as well as a treatment for gout and fever. Baron Justus von Liebig (1803-1873) was a famous German chemist whose legacy lives on in fertilisers, nutritional principles and food. The Liebigs Extract of Meat Company created Oxo bouillon and Marmite, both of which were modelled on the barons meat extracts designed for poor people who could not afford the real thing. The company expanded around the world, including South America. Cattle breeding greatly expanded there for tinned meat production under the companys label Fray Bentos. It is said that Liebigs Extract of Meat Company brought the industrial revolution to the continent.. Liebig had conducted a number of experiments and tests on soil quality which led to the development of crop fertiliser. Some of his theories turned out to be right and others wrong. However, he tried to help humanity rather than hinder it.. Vialls took a somewhat different view to mine. He wrote (emphases mine):. The beginning of the end for obtaining essential minerals from fruit and vegetables happened in the ...
Having a methodologist as an author seems to have a A multiple logistic regression model with any inap- protective effect, which is in accordance with the find- propriate reporting as the dependent variable and meth- ings of an earlier study (15). We first evaluated participants performance on each trauma case based on a review of their disposition decisions (transfer, admit, discharge). We categorized patients who died before a disposition decision as transferred as we could not predict what the physician would have done given a successful resuscitation and wanted to give him/her the benefit of the doubt. We then calculated each groups proportion of under-triage (defined as the number of patients not transferred to a trauma center divided by total number of severely injured patients who should have been transferred to a trauma center).46 To be consistent with our statistical analysis plan, we treated the proportion of under-triage as continuous and compared the effects of the intervention (primary outcome), cognitive load (secondary outcome), and the interaction of these factors on under-triage using a two way analysis of variance. In response to the recommendation of an independent statistical reviewer, we completed a post hoc ...

I am a surgeon-scientist active in head & neck cancer research for more than two decades. In 2012, I was appointed Chief of Otolaryngology, Director of the Head & Neck Disease Center and Co-Director of the Molecular Virology Program at Yale. Since my arrival, Dr. Issaeva (Co-PI) and I have worked to established a translational research program at Yale focused on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) with particular interest in HPV-associated cancers. Priorities have been to better understand defects in HPV-associated HNSCC and to identify molecular characteristics that may be essential for tumor formation or maintenance. While prioritizing projects, we took advantage of hypermethylation of HPV+ cancers to explore demethylating drugs and found that these tumors are very responsive to 5-azacytidine (5-aza). We found that 5-aza decreased expression of HPV genes, restored p53 levels and activity, and caused DNA damage, particularly double strand breaks (DSB). Cytotoxicity of 5-aza toward ...
The Greek Papyri 261 We can watch, too, to a limited extent in the papyri the process by which a classical tradition was formed, a result partly of the work f the critics and scholars of Alexandria, though originally they had no such object in mind (to the pre-Alexandrine age the idea was entirely alien), in part of the schools and the con- servatism of the school tradition. In the Ptolemaic period we find that the new literary fragments greatly exceed in number those of known authors; in the Roman period the balance is fairly equally held between the two, while in the Byzantine age the known and standard texts predominate. But this was no single or even a deliberate process, at least in the early stages; that the Byzantines were not limited to the standard authors that survived in medieval times is clear from the discovery of the texts of Eupolis and Sappho to mention two names alone. Nor could any discovery offer clearer proof of the survival of Hellenism or suggest more markedly the ...
This book is the nuts and bolts of a science few if any have been able to truly grasp. And yet, there it is, presented as simple as a professor can talk about the subject they have mastered. Never before have the energetic facts been presented on one of mankinds most elusive subject matters. So profound and yet so simple is this ancient mystery revealed for us all to re-awaken to, and thus for us to begin to apply in our daily lives. And the purpose? All of Serges teachings are geared to let you know who you truly are so that your living way can return to that way of being and thus by reflection, inspire others to remember and hence likewise choose to return.
Page 216 - On the keeper putting a spar of wood two inches in diameter into his den, he cracked it in pieces as if it had been touchwood, and in a minute the whole was reduced to a mass of splinters. The power of his jaws far exceeded any animal force of the kind I ever saw exerted, and reminded me of nothing so much as a miners crushing mill, or the scissors with which they cut off bars of iron and copper in the metal foundries. ...

Working with principles from the fields of evolutionary and developmental biology (evo-devo), this fascinating work offers a new approach to analyzing child growth and development, examining each stage and transition in detail, from fetal development to preadulthood. Based on the authors in-depth review of the current literature and his own observations as a pediatric endocrinologist, the book demonstrates how the transitions between human life history phases represent unique periods of evolutionary adaptive response to the environment. In addition, the author explains why an understanding of these transition periods enables us to better understand the sequence and mechanisms of child growth as well as to better diagnose child growth disorders.. Logically organized and clearly written, Evo-Devo of Child Growth:. ...
