Gait dysfunctions are commonly encountered in the primary care setting. Compensated Trendelenburg gait is a gait dysfunction that was originally described in patients with weakness of ipsilateral hip abduction. This condition is thought to result from neuronal injury or myopathy. No treatment modalities currently exist for compensated Trendelenburg gait. The authors present a case in which osteopathic manipulative treatment may have improved a Trendelenburg gait dysfunction in a man aged 65 years with multiple sclerosis. Evidence of this improvement was obtained with the GaitMat II system for measuring numerous gait parameters. Based on the results reported in the present case, the authors propose that compensated Trendelenburg gait may arise from somatic dysfunction and may be corrected by osteopathic manipulative treatment. ...
Context: High levels of human secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) have been shown to decrease the incidence of acquiring upper respiratory tract infections. Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) has been shown to improve cardiac indices, increase lymph flow rates through the thoracic duct, and decrease sympathetic tone in postoperative patients and those in intensive care. Therefore, we hypothesized that OMT may also increase sIgA levels in people under high levels of emotional and psychological stress, thereby enhancing immunity and potentially preventing subsequent infections.. Objective: To determine if OMT increases sIgA levels in highly stressed individuals.. Methods: Twenty-five second-year osteopathic medical students were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n=12) or a control group (n=13). All participants were scheduled to take their national board examination (Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination-USA) within 2 to 3 weeks after the experiment. After each ...
Western University of Health Sciences is seeking men and women to participate in a study on the effectiveness of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) and Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) in patients with vertigo. The purpose of this study is to examine the efficacy of OMT in the treatment of individuals with vertigo, alone and in combination with Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT). Because of the health care costs associated with vertigo, the cost effectiveness of OMT and VRT will also be examined ...
The use of complementary and alternative medicine in neonatal ward has been steadily rising during the last decade. This integrated medicine approach has been shown to be helpful to improve neonatal health care. Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) has been applied to premature infants to reduce the length of stay and to cope with clinical complications. Results from previous studies documented the positive association between OMT and shorter period of hospitalisation as well as improvement of clinical conditions. The aim of this nationwide multicenter study is to demonstrate the effect of OMT on length of stay (LOS) in premature infants across 3 neonatal intensive care units (NICU ...

The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of OMT on the macroscopic and microscopic measures of asthma. This was accomplished through a repeated measures design, and the asthma quality of life questionnaire was used to assess asthma severity. Inflammatory proteins known as cytokines, fractional exhaled nitric oxide, and spirometry were used to assess for change immediately after the OMT was performed. Although no statistically significant changes were measured, inflammatory cytokines specific to asthma decreased (IL-4, IL-5), while more general inflammatory cytokines increased after OMT (IL-6, CRP). Spirometry showed a slight decrease in FEV1 and FVC after OMT, although this decrease was neither statistically nor clinically significant. These trends illustrate the need for further investigation into the mechanism of OMT and its role in asthma treatment. The inflammatory cascade that drives asthma is complex and other diseases and lifestyle habits also generate and modify inflammation in the

Isolated chronic sphenoidal sinusitis is extremely rare. One major medical center in New York City reported only 132 total cases seen in over two decades. Following sinus surgery, a 24-year-old female presented with isolated chronic sphenoid sinus disease. Somato-visceral reflexes, cervical and thoracic hypertonicity, blocked lymphatic drainage and restricted cranial movement can exacerbate any chronic sinusitis. After removing these somatic dysfunctions, her classic symptoms of chronic sinusitis (postnasal drip and inability to equalize pressures in both ears) resolved, and her pain, tenderness, and asymmetry either decreased or completely resolved. Use of these techniques in an individual with chronic sinusitis proved to be beneficial. Applied to any patient presenting in the primary care setting with symptoms of acute sinusitis, allergy, or asthma, this may reduce the chance for development or chronic sinusitis and the attendant risks associated with isolated chronic sphenoidal sinusitis.

David February 25, 2016 at ten:15 am I would identical to to respectfully enlighten several of you about Osteopathic Doctors, or D.O.s on this thread. This is certainly either by ignorance and/or maybe that most DOs dont incorporate their arms any more into health care apply. I realize that statistics demonstrate that only about 10% in the a hundred,000 or so practicing Medical doctors of Osteopathic Medication ( D.O.s ) from the U.S. employ their hands-on competencies of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment, or O.M.T. in scientific apply, so its conceivable that DCs/Chiropractors are by far the most identified practitioners of SMT, or spinal manipulative treatment. Having said that, there are actually about seven hundred of us in Osteopathic Medicine which have absent on to specialise in SMT by acquiring Board-Licensed in it. A few of us, myself included, even received double- board Accredited in each Family Exercise too. There is just one acknowledged professional medical board within the ...
The osteopathic profession has a long history of pioneers who have added to the profession, particularly in the area of the art and science of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment. William F. Sutherland, DO added the dimension of manipulative treatment to the scull as well as the rest of the body. Frank Chapman, DO developed a system of diagnosis by tender points on the front and back of the body that were associated with systemic symptoms and disease. Fred L. Mitchell, Sr., DO brought forth the application of a muscle activating force throughout the body and added a major understanding of the bio-mechanics of the pelvis. Lawrence Jones, DO developed the system of Counterstrain based upon a variety of patient positioning to relieve tender points associated with a variety of patient presentations ...

This case involves a patient seen in the Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) Clinic with sudden, painless onset of loss of visual field five weeks following craniotomy for meningioma removal. Homonymous hemianopsia and the epidemiology of meningioma are briefly reviewed. The patients loss of visual field resolved completely immediately following the application of osteopathy in the cranial field. While the synchronicity may suggest that the two events are causally linked, further clinical evidence is required before such an effect can be attributed to osteopathic intervention. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
This category contains osteopathic practitioners homepages and clinic websites. In the U.S. D.O.s are doctors of osteopathy and are complete physicians, licensed to perform surgery and prescribe medicine. In other countries, D.O.s are diplomates of osteopathy who mostly restrict their practice to OMT (osteopathic manipulative treatment) and do not prescribe medicine or perform surgery.
Wyatt et al. (1) are to be commended for producing one of the largest randomised controlled trial on the effectiveness of cranial osteopathy for children with cerebral palsy, which was carried out on behalf of Cerebra. Cranial osteopathy as an adjunctive treatment in cerebral palsy is not new: Dr Beryl Arbuckle, an osteopathic physician, opened the Cerebral Palsy Institute in the 1940s in the USA which offered osteopathic manipulative treatment to children with this condition(2). There are however limitations to this study and the results should be interpreted accordingly. The age range chosen for the trial was 5-12 years (mean7.8) whereas in reality, most children with cerebral palsy or other neurological deficits who are treated with osteopathy are seen much earlier to take advantage of the potentially greater plasticity of the developing central nervous system. Earlier trials by Fryman (3) and Duncan et al (4,5) studied a wider age range ranging from 11 months to 12 years which is more ...

Osteopathic manipulative treatment uses very gentle pressures and positionings to encourage the tissues to gently relax and unwind, releasing the shock of imprinted traumas. Patients often experience a sense of deep relaxation, tingling, fluid flows and relief of pain. Emotional releases may occur as well. These changes may be experienced immediately as they occur or later after the treatment. Some patients will only notice that their previous level of pain has diminished some hours or days following treatment. HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE ...

As childrens nervous systems are particularly amenable to osteopathic manipulation, we find that early treatment can prevent many difficulties later in life.. Birth Trauma - A newborns cranium compresses as a normal part of the birth process. Difficult deliveries, as well as normal deliveries using anesthesia can inhibit the expansion of these bones. Gentle cranial osteopathy can often resolve this situation in a few treatments.. Breastfeeding - The nerves which control tongue motion (located at the base of the head) required for breastfeeding can also be compressed during the birth process. Gentle cranial osteopathy can often help an infant with an uncoordinated sucking reflex.. Colic/reflux - The nerves controlling the function of a newborns digestive tract can likewise be compressed during the birth process. Gentle cranial osteopathy can often improve these problems as well.. Developmental delays/learning disorders: Osteopathic manipulation can free contractures, decrease nervous system ...
D.O.s were listed by the AMA as "cultists" and deemed M.D. consultation of D.O.s unethical from 1923 until 1962.[28] M.D.s regarded that their treatments were rooted in "pseudoscientific dogma", and although physicians from both branches of medicine have been able to meet on common ground, tensions between the two continue.[6][needs update]. In 1988, Petr Skrabanek classified osteopathy as one of the "paranormal" forms of alternative medicine, commenting that it has a view of disease which had no meaning outside its own closed system.[29]. In a 1995 conference address, the president of the Association of American Medical Colleges, Jordan J. Cohen, pinpointed OMT as a defining difference between M.D.s and D.O.s; while he saw there was no quarrel in the appropriateness of manipulation for musculoskeletal treatment, the difficulty centered on "applying manipulative therapy to treat other systemic diseases" - at that point, Cohen maintained, "we enter the realm of skepticism on the part of the ...

Observed Impulse: Myofascial Release for the Nasopharynx, and Soft Palate: The Tension Behind Your Face You have a large muscular knot behind your face. This knot becomes tighter every time you feel stressed. It also becomes tighter when you are in social situations. It makes you wince and grimace and it gets worse every day because it is never touched, massaged or released. Worse yet, the tension accumulated from years of misuse makes the muscles ache, sending pain and panic signals to your brain. Ischemic compression, soft tissue mobilization and myofascial release are very popular remedies now. Here I am advocating that you perform this specifically for your nasopharynx. It is painful at first but it is easier every time and it only takes a few weeks to completely get rid of the pain. Afterwards your face feels amazing, you feel much calmer and have much more social composure. Here, I will explain how to provide myofascial release for the tonsils, the uvula, the palatopharyngeal sphincter, ...

Osteopathy is a manual therapy that helps horses maintain health despite the unnatural demands placed on them by people. It is based on a precise knowledge of the structural and functional anatomy of bones, muscles, the circulatory system, and especially the nervous system. Osteopathic manipulation stimulates the body so that the musculoskeletal system, behavior and all other systems are optimized.. A.T. Still, who pioneered the modality in the 1800s, stated that in osteopathy "the cause of disease is considered chiefly from one standpoint, viz.: disease is the result of anatomical abnormalities followed by physiological discord."1 In modern days, Janek Vluggen of the Vluggen Institute for Equine Osteopathy and Education, has used his expertise in visceral osteopathic principals, which relate to the autonomic nervous system and cranio-sacral system, to deepen the healing potential of osteopathy.. Osteopathy aims to restore balance within the body and enhance the bodys ability to heal itself without the need for continual intervention. Your osteopathic manual practitioner will rarely recommend treatment more frequently than once a week in the initial stages and less frequently over time. An acute injury may be resolved in 3-4 treatments over a 3-6 week period. More chronic problems often require a longer treatment or management plan. Your osteopathic manual practitioner will discuss your treatment goals, likely outcomes and frequency with you at your initial appointment once you have been assessed according to your individual circumstances ...

The goal with myofascial release is to promote healthy superficial fascia, which is a layer of connective tissue that lies between your skin and your muscles. Over time, sub-optimal food choices, lack of optimal rest and activity, and emotional stress can contribute to a buildup of metabolic waste throughout your bodys superficial fascia. When this happens, your superficial fascia can develop restrictions that impede proper flow of nutrients and waste products between your skin, fascia, and muscles. This state can predispose your muscles and even underlying ligaments to strains and sprains. Myofascial release is quite simple to perform. The best way to get the hang of it is to have the person receiving treatment lie face down (back uncovered), to use the soft pads of your thumbs and fingers to gently pick up and hold a roll of skin near the base of the spine, then to slowly roll up the spine, lifting the skin up and away from the underlying tissue at every level of the spine. If you do this ...
