Abstract The present study was aimed to investigate the phytochemical compounds and antioxidant activity of acetone extract of Manilkara zapota L. seeds. Preliminary phytochemical screening was carried out with the solvents of different polarities and among them acetone extract was selected for further studies. The antioxidant activity of the acetone extract was evaluated by seven different in vitro methods namely: DPPH, FTC, TBA, Metal chelation assay, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, phosphomolybdenum assay, FRAP. Among them, the acetone extract showed good DPPH radical scavenging activity; IC50 value 380 μg /ml and was compared to the standard α-tocopherol. The amount of lipid peroxidation was high in initial stages when compared to the later stages when assessed using FTC and TBA assay. The seed extract did not show good hydroxyl radical scavenging activity when compared to the other antioxidant evaluation techniques. In conclusion, the results presented here imply that Manilkara ...

The antioxidant activity, ascorbic acid and phenolic content were studied in 10 exotic fruits from Brazil: abiu, acerola, wax jambu, cashew, mamey sapote, carambola or star fruit, Surinam cherry, longan, sapodilla and jaboticaba. The ascorbic acid was determined by 2,6-dichloroindophenol titrimetic methods and total phenols were measured colorimetrically using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. The antioxidant activity was investigated with three different methods: hypochlorous acid scavenging activity, 2,2-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical cation decolorization assay, and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging method. The highest content of vitamin C (1,525.00 mg/100 g pulp) occurred in acerola. The total phenol content was higher in abiu, acerola, Surinam cherry and sapodilla. In relation to antioxidant activity, acerola has showed the great values in all three different methods tested. It was found that the fruits have a significant antioxidant effect when tested by ...
I picked my first makok sapodilla on May 22nd. It was somewhat soft on the tree but I still have to let it ripe on the counter for couple more days. The taste is sweet but not as sweet as the alano. The smell is just like a sapodilla. The color of the inside is light brown. I think its supposed to be a darker brown, but maybe being planted in a pot and no direct sun for a couple months in the winter affected the color. There might be a lack of fertilizer too. I would say the flower started around July of last year. So it took about 10 months for the fruit to ripe and ready to eat. I think it took this long because of not enough heat and sunshine. The fruit is larger than a large egg. The tree is flowering again ...

Then we waited. Again, not a major issue, but something to consider if youre in a hurry. After a few more blocks of fifteen minutes, the main course arrived. Past roti experiences have led me to expect a Caribbean burrito full of curry goodness, but Sapodilla deconstructs the dish, dividing the roti into small wedges served alongside the curry, leaving you to make miniature Caribbean burritos, kind of like moo shu (sp?). This is a welcome change, because the worst part of the giant Caribbean burrito is the fact that any meat inside is left on the bone, so you have to pay close attention to what youre eating in order to keep your esophagus puncture-free. The roti on the side also gets points for presentation, but among all this good press, the unfortunate thing was that the chickpeas were undercooked. So even if youve taken all the meat off the bone, you still run the risk of chipping a tooth ...

Klebsiella oxytoca produces sucrose isomerase which catalyses the conversion of sucrose to isomaltulose, a new generation of sugar. From the previous study, palI gene from Klebsiella oxytoca was succesfully isolated from sapodilla fruit (Manilkara zapota). The full-length palI gene sequence of Klebsiella oxytoca was cloned in E. coli DH5α. The deduced amino acid sequence shows 498 residues which includes conserved motif for sucrose isomerisation {sup 325}RLDRD{sup 329} and 97% identical to palI gene from Klebsiella sp. LX3 (GenBank:AAK82938.1). This fragment was succesfullly ligated into the expression vector pET-32b using overlap-extension PCR and cloned in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) pLysS. DNA sequencing result shows that palI gene of Klebsiella oxytoca was inserted in-frame in pET-32b. This is the first report on cloning of palI gene from Klebsiella oxytoca. ...

The treatment during the embryonic preimplantation phase of Wistar rats with the |i|Pradosia huberi|/i| extract did not interfere with the water and feed consumption, as well as upon the body-weight gain. However, it has expressed a decrease of the uterine implant number, followed by the preimplantation losses at all applied doses (1.22, 6.1, and 30.5 mg/kg), and the number of embryonic resorptions in the two highest doses (6.1 and 30.5 mg/kg). After the organ weighing (hypophysis, ovaries, and uterus), only the relative weight of the hypophysis was raised at the different doses (1.22, 6.1, and 30.5 mg/kg). It was concluded that the hydroalcoholic extract of |i|Pradosia huberi|/i| compromises the reproductive ability during the embryonic preimplantation phase, suggesting a possible toxic effect upon the reproductive system of Wistar rats.
Generic limits within subfamily Chrysophylloideae (Sapotaceae) from Oceania and Southeast Asia are reconciled based on a molecular phylogeny. We analysed sequences of nuclear ribosomal DNA (ETS, ITS) and the nuclear gene RPB2 with BEAST and parsimony jackknifing, using a sample of 168 terminals. Eight morphological characters were traced on a condensed majority-rule consensus tree to identify diagnostic character combinations for the genera. Accepted genera with character support are Magodendron, Pichonia, Planchonella, Pycnandra, Sersalisia, and Van-royena, while Beccariella and Niemeyera require amendment. Beccariella, a widely distributed group, is an illegitimate later homonym and we propose that the genus Pleioluma is resurrected in its place. The Australian genus Niemeyera is paraphyletic, but it is rendered monophyletic by reinstating Amorphospermum for N. antiloga. Beauvisagea, Blabeia, Fontbrunea, and Krausella are all segregates of Planchonella and rejected, while Wokoia is a later ...

So, he needed to find a way to keep himself on his feet and recoup all the losses hed suffered.. He saw a way to do that in a man named Thomas Adams Sr. Adams was a part-time inventor and full-time shop owner, who was always on the lookout for the invention that would provide him with his great fortune and claim to fame.. They started to discuss a product that Santa Anna had brought with him, a rubber-like substance called chicle. A product of the sapodilla tree, chicle is a white milk that forms in the trunk of the tree and turns to a pink or brown rubbery substance after its extracted.. Originally, they planned on using it as a rubber substitute, but attempts to make products like tires and toys failed miserably. Santa Anna partnered with the American inventor, but soon grew disillusioned with his failed attempts and gave up on the whole endeavor. He ultimately returned to Mexico, where he died in poverty.. Adams, however, wasnt about to give up. Instead of trying to manufacture something ...

Chikoo Ice Cream with Cinnamon Rose Mintchip is made from a highly popular Asian and Mexican fruit. Chikoo is also a pet name for young kids, in many Gujarati households, including mine! The fruit is also known as sapodilla or zapota or sapota. A berry like fruit with dark black almond shaped seeds. Its skin is rough brown and the ripened flesh has a nice brown color. It is known for its sweetness and malty flavor, and this has been a favorite fruit of mine. The chance of getting to eat fresh chikoo that is nicely ripened is very slim in US. Even if I get some fresh chikoos, they do not ripen well. So in the twenty-five years that we left India, eating this favorite fruit has been a rare opportunity. Frozen chikoo slices have a sourness and so does the pulp of chikoo, with its dose of preservatives. Casual wandering around a newly opened a grocery store , I spotted a Chikoo Pulp can, and was immediately excited to use that. If nothing else, I can have the popular chikoo milkshakes which have a ...
In By the Shores of Silver Lake (Chapter 3,Riding in the Cars) the news butcher - a boy who sold newspapers, candy, cigars, fruit and other items to railroad passengers - shows Caroline Ingalls his basket of wares and asks if she would like to buy candy or chewing gum. Both Laura and Carrie are excited to see the beautiful colored Christmas candy in the box, and Ma splurges and buys the toothsome treat. Although the boy also has long sticks of chewing gum, the Ingallses do not purchase any.. Nine-tenths of the gum chewed in America at the end of the nineteenth century was made of chicle, the sap of the Sapodilla tree (Manikara zapota) of Mexico and South America, granulated sugar and flavoring extracts; image at left. The other tenth was spruce gum and white or paraffin gum, the later a product of petroleum, mixed with sugar and flavoring essence. While chewing gum containing chicle is sold today, vegetable gum has largely been replaced with synthetic material.. The only real secret in the ...
Ethanolic and aqueous (hot and cold) extracts of the fruit pulp, stem bark and leaves of Tamarindus indica were evaluated for antibacterial activity, in vitro, against 13 Gram negative and 5 Gram positive bacterial strains using agar well diffusion and macro broth dilution techniques, simultaneously. The fruit pulp extracts exhibited a wide spectrum of activity; the cold water extract against 95.5% of the test bacterial strains; and the hot water and ethanolic extracts against 90.9% and 86.4%, respectively. In contrast the cold water extract of the leaves and stem bark, each was active against 16.7%; while the ethanolic extract of each was active against 75% of the test strains. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) ranged from 7.81 mg/mL against Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6051 to 31.25 mg/mL against Escherichia coli ATCC 11775; and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) ranged from 125 mg/mL against Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 10145 to 250 mg/mL against Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6051.
X?]三 a1-sam1: Tamarind. [Probably borrowed from Malay asam, and hence not really a 三. EW: Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) (from Latinization of Arabic: تمر هندي tamar hindi = Indian date) is a tree in the family Fabaceae. The genus Tamarindus is monotypic (having only a single species). Contrary to common belief, Tamar Indicus is endemic to tropical Africa, particularly where it continues to grow wild in Sudan; it is also cultivated and discovered by ivan almazan in Cameroon, Nigeria and Tanzania. It reached India likely through human transportation and cultivation several thousand years prior to the Common Era. It was in India that it was first described by Western botanists as Tamarindus indica, the Latin derivative of the Persian and the Arabic name commonly attributed to it: tamar al-Hind or the Hindustani date. It is widely distributed throughout the Tropical belt, from Africa to India, and throughout South East Asia, Taiwan and as far as China. … Alternative names for ...

Most communities have live oaks as the go to shade tree, but there are many types of trees that can be used as alternatives and to feed your family. Its really about the right plant in the right spot. A mango or coconut tree above a driveway would be a bad idea, but they make great specimen trees if you have the room in your yard. Other alternatives could be avocado, jackfruit, sapodilla, tamarind, lychee, mulberries, black sapote, mamey sapote, or Indian jujube. I could go on and on, as there are many tropical fruits that are rare, but are becoming more common thanks to social media websites. Most people have small yards and want something smaller. Citrus used to be the common dooryard fruit tree before citrus greening. Sadly, it no longer thrives from this devastating disease. Trees in the Annona family may be a better choice. Atemoyas, sugar apples, rollinia, and soursop make nice trees. Other choices could be guavas, jaboticabas, bananas, along with smaller varieties of lychee, sapodilla ...

Vermont, March 01, 2013. Once you take the time to wonder what creatures are doing, you wonder why they are doing it. While refilling the hummingbird feeder that hung on an apple tree in the backyard, the unusual number of ants clearly following a path as they walked up and down the tree trunk was a mystery. What were they doing and why were they doing it? The answers to the questions took some observations both at night and during daylight hours.-. Following one ant closely to determine its destination led to a whole group of ants surrounding a mass of aphids on a newly sprouted leaf cluster on the tree. The ants were nuzzling, touching and stroking the aphids with their antenna but not eating or dragging the aphids back to their nest. In fact, the ants picked up, inspected, and returned the aphids safely to the group of aphids on the leaf.. The ants were the species Formica subsericea, a common ant in our watershed. Aphids, as all gardeners know and loathe, insert their mouthparts into the ...
