The aim of this study was to compare tracheal intubation performance regarding the time to intubation, glottic view, difficulty, and dental click, by novices using McGrath videolaryngoscope (VL), Pentax Airway Scope (AWS) and Macintosh laryngoscope in normal and cervical immobilized manikin models. Thirty-five anesthesia nurses without previous intubation experience were recruited. Participants performed endotracheal intubation in a manikin model at two simulated neck positions (normal and fixed neck via cervical immobilization), using three different devices three times each. Performance parameters included intubation time, success rate of intubation, Cormack Lehane laryngoscope grading, dental click, and subjective difficulty score. Bystander resuscitation plays an important role in lifesaving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). A significant reduction in the no-flow-time, quantitatively better chest compressions and an improved quality of ventilation can be demonstrated during CPR using supraglottic airway devices (SADs). Previous studies have demonstrated the ability of inexperienced persons to operate SADs after brief instruction. The aim of this pilot study was to determine whether an instruction manual consisting of four diagrams enables laypersons to operate a Laryngeal Mask Supreme® (LMAS) in the manikin. An instruction manual of four illustrations with speech bubbles displaying the correct use of the LMAS was designed. Laypersons were handed a bag containing a LMAS, a bag mask valve device (BMV), a syringe prefilled with air and the instruction sheet, and were asked to perform and ventilate the manikin as displayed. Background: Most traffic safety research projects require accurate real world data which is collected in different databases around the world. This is especially important since the results of these projects form the basis for new crash test procedures and standards. In many of these databases the involvement of the frontal structures of the car in frontal crashes is coded by using the SAE J224 practice (Society of Automobile Engineers). There were indications that by using this practice the database would contain an overestimate of the car frontal structure involvement in real world crashes. When a cardiac arrest occurs it is vital that bystanders act immediately. As a minimum bystanders should be able to check consciousness, call 112 and perform chest compression of sufficient depth and speed until an ambulance or other professional support arrives. The majority of people however do not have these skills. Courses in Basic Life Support are available in all European countries on average 2 hour including a practice session. Unlike studies already published, our study measured the actual success of training measured as the outcome of learning in terms of an improvement or deterioration in chest compression. The performance of the whole group and of each participant before and after the course were analyzed and compared. Quantification of the net benefit, i.e. of the improvement and deterioration combined, assisted in highlighting better the strengths and weaknesses than just comparing the groups, where no differentiation is made between the proportion showing an improvement, deterioration or no change. It appears that after a 10 minute video presentation, three components of chest compression (compression rate, depth and decompression) can largely be performed correctly without any practical training. However, the net benefit of the course, i.e. subtracting deteriorations from improvements, was only moderate, with improvements of 43% in hand positioning (total 74% correct), 29% in compression depth (94%), 20% in ...
