Functional manganese requirement and its use as a critical value for diagnosis of manganese deficiency in subterranean clover ...
The effects of manganese supply on plant growth and on photosynthesis and manganese concentrations in young leaves were examined in Seaton Park subterranean clover in three glasshouse water culture experiments.Plants werc grown initially with a copious supply of manganese, and transferred to solutions either with or without manganese. Sequential harvests were taken to determine the effects of developing manganese deficiency on dry matter (DM) yield of whole plants and selected characteristics [manganese, chlorophyll and photosynthetic oxygen evolution (POE)] of youngest open leaf blades (YOL). In addition, the deffect of leaf age and iron supply on POE werc examined.Manganese concentrations and POE in YOL declined markedly and rapidly in plants transferred to solutions without manganese, while chlorophyll concentrations of YOL and plant DM yield responded more weakly and more slowly. As a result, a level of manganese deficiency which depressed POE in young leaves by more than 50 per cent had no ...
Manganese Deficiency Symptoms |IYTHEALTH.com
Manganese deficiency results in glucose intolerance similar to diabetes mellitus in some animal types, however studies analyzing the manganese status of diabetic human beings have created combined results. In one study, entire blood manganese levels did not vary substantially between 57 diabetics and 28 non-diabetic controls.. However, urinary manganese excretion tended to be a little higher in 185 diabetics compared to 185 non-diabetic controls. A case-control research study of 250 diabetic and non-diabetic people found that type 2 diabetic people had greater serum manganese levels than non-diabetics. Nevertheless, a more recent research study in 257 type 2 diabetics and 166 non-diabetic controls discovered lower blood levels of manganese in the diabetic patients.. Additionally, a study of practical manganese status found the activity of the antioxidant enzyme, MnSOD, was lower in the white blood cells of diabetics than in non-diabetics. Neither 15 mg nor 30 mg of oral manganese improved ...

Scientific Opinion on Dietary Reference Values for manganese | Europäische Behörde für Lebensmittelsicherheit
Following a request from the European Commission, the Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA) derived Dietary Reference Values (DRVs) for manganese. Manganese is an essential dietary mineral which is a component of a number of metalloenzymes involved in amino acid, lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. A specific manganese deficiency syndrome has not been described in humans. The body is able to adapt to a wide range of manganese intakes by regulating both efficiency of absorption in the intestine and the quantity excreted via bile. There are no reliable and validated biomarkers of manganese intake or status and data on manganese intakes versus health outcomes are not available for DRVs for manganese. As there is insufficient evidence available to derive an average requirement or a population reference intake, an Adequate Intake (AI) is proposed. Mean intakes of manganese in adults in the EU are around 3 mg/day. In addition, null or positive balances have consistently been ...

47. Maternal and cord blood manganese (Mn) levels and birth weight: the MIREC birth cohort study (abstract) - MIREC Canada
Epidemiological studies have hypothesized that both insufficient and excess blood manganese (Mn) levels during pregnancy are associated with reduced fetal growth. This literature is characterized by inconsistent results and a limited focus on women with exposures representative of the general North American population. We examined the relationship between maternal and cord blood Mn levels and fetal growth among women enrolled in the Maternal-Infant Research on Environmental Chemicals Study (MIREC). Mothers with singleton, term infants and complete maternal first and third trimester blood Mn data were eligible for inclusion in the present study (n = 1519). Mean birth weight and odds ratios of small for gestational age (SGA) births according to maternal and cord blood Mn levels (low (,10), referent (10-,90), high (≥90) percentiles) were estimated. We also evaluated the association between the ratio of cord and maternal blood Mn and birth weight. Women with low (,0.82 μg/dL) maternal blood third ...
Maxing Out On Manganese? - Dr. Weil
The average dietary intake of manganese in the United States is estimated at 2.1 to 2.3 mg per day for men and 1.6 to 1.8 mg for women, but those on vegetarian diets or diets emphasizing whole grains may get as much as 10.9 mg daily. The best food sources besides whole grains are nuts, leafy vegetables, and tea (although tannins in tea may inhibit manganese absorption slightly).. I know of no reason for humans to take supplemental manganese. In addition to the amounts you get in foods, most multi-vitamin/mineral supplements provide some of this mineral, about 2 mg on average. Manganese deficiency is so rare that no recommended dietary allowance has been established for it. We simply dont know how much is needed for optimum health, and there could be a downside to taking too much. Neurological symptoms similar to those of Parkinsons disease have been reported in individuals who ingested high levels in water. You wont get in trouble with the amounts of manganese absorbed from foods or contained ...
Effects of Dietary Manganese Supplementation on Laying Performance, Egg Quality and Antioxidant Status in Laying Ducks
Abstract: Objective: Manganese (Mn) is a crucial trace element for poultry nutrition because it has multiple physiological functions. Thus, the main goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary Mn supplementation on laying performance, egg quality and antioxidant status in Shanma laying ducks. Methodology: Five hundred and four Shanma laying ducks, at 17 weeks of age, were randomly assigned to 7 treatments, with 6 replicates per treatment and 12 ducks per replicate. Birds were fed the same basal diet, which was supplemented with 0.0 (control), 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 or 90 mg Mn/kg in the form of Mn-sulfate. Results: Results showed that dietary Mn supplementation did not affect egg production, egg weight, feed conversion ratio, egg mass, egg quality, tibia characteristics, total antioxidant capacity, copper-zinc superoxide dismutase or lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde), but supplementing 90 mg Mn/kg diet significantly (p,0.05) improved the activities of total superoxide dismutase, ...

AU - Ciofi-Baffoni, Simone. AU - Tien, Ming. PY - 2003/1/25. Y1 - 2003/1/25. N2 - The present study characterizes the unfolding and folding processes of recombinant manganese peroxidase. This enzyme contains five disulfide bonds, two calcium ions, and one heme prosthetic group. Circular dichroism in the far UV was used to monitor global changes of the protein secondary structure, whereas UV-visible spectroscopy of the Soret band provided information about local changes in the heme cavity. The effects of reducing agents, oxidizing agents, and denaturants on this process were investigated. In addition to affecting the secondary structure content, these factors also affect the binding of the heme and the calcium ions, both of which have a significant effect on the folding process. Our results also show that denaturants induce ...

Minerals ~ Manganese
Method of Action. Manganese is absorbed with about 4% efficiency from the intestines and is carried into, and in the blood by the protein transmanganin. Regulation of body manganese levels is controlled primarily through variable excretion, rather than absorption.. Manganese is essential for the enzymatic incorporation of xylose and galactose in glycoproteins. These glycoproteins are the cells natural barrier to invading viruses and coat every cell of the human body. Glycoproteins also make up the great majority of all secretory proteins.. Manganese and magnesium are used interchangeably in many enzymes as cofactors. Aminopeptidases, which break down protein structure, are secreted by the intestinal mucosal cells for digestive purposes and utilize either magnesium or manganese as the cofactor element of their structures.. Manganese is an important constituent of activated arginase, an enzyme found in the liver, and mediates the conversion of arginine to urea.. Manganese is a constituent of the ...
Determinants of serum manganese levels in an Italian population. | Archivio della ricerca dellUniversità di Modena e Reggio...
Manganese (Mn) is both essential and toxic for humans, mainly depending on the total levels and its species. Main sources of exposure include food and air pollution, particularly motorized traffic. We sought to determine the potential influence of these sources on serum total levels of Mn and Mn species. We selected a random sample of municipality residents from an Italian urban municipality, from whom we collected detailed personal information, dietary habits and a blood sample for serum Mn determination. We also assessed outdoor air Mn exposure, by modeling levels of particulate matter ≤10 µm (PM10) from motorized traffic at the residence of geocoded subjects. Serum Mn species generally showed higher levels in males and positive correlation with age, while no such differences were found according to smoking habits or use of dietary supplements. Among nutrients, only iron intake showed a relation with Mn [an inverse correlation with Mn‑ferritin (Mn‑Fer) and a direct one with ...

Manganese is an element generally found in combination with iron and many minerals.. It plays a vital role in brain growth and development, but excessive exposure can result in neurotoxicity.. Lead author Erin Haynes from the University of Cincinnatis academic health center in Ohio, U.S said that there are socioeconomic issues at play, however, they are also compounded by potentially significant environmental exposures.. Children may be particularly susceptible to the neurotoxic effects of ambient Mn exposure, as their brains are undergoing a dynamic process of growth and development, Haynes added.. The results appear online in the journal NeuroToxicology. (ANI). ...
The Healing Properties of Tears: 7 Good Reasons to Cry Your Eyes Out - Beyond Blue
3. Tears remove toxins.. Biochemist William Frey, who has been researching tears for as long as Ive been searching for sanity, found in one study that emotional tears-those formed in distress or grief-contained more toxic byproducts than tears of irritation (think onion peeling). Are tears toxic then? No! They actually remove toxins from our body that build up courtesy of stress. They are like a natural therapy or massage session, but they cost a lot less!. 4. Crying can elevate mood.. Do you know what your manganese level is? No, neither do I. But chances are that you will feel better if its lower because overexposure to manganese can cause bad stuff: anxiety, nervousness, irritability, fatigue, aggression, emotional disturbance and the rest of the feelings that live inside my happy head rent-free. The act of crying can lower a persons manganese level. And just like with the toxins I mentioned in my last point, emotional tears contain 24 percent higher albumin protein ...
Manganese - A Missing Link in Bone Health? - Mineralife Nutraceuticals, LLC
Your dentist and your doctor always told you to get plenty
of Calcium for strong bones and teeth, but did they ever mention Manganese? Not
likely, as Manganese is a hidden actor in the play for strong bones and teeth.
In fact, the human body only needs 50 mg of Manganese, but those 50mg are
absolutely essential for health. Without sufficient Manganese, you may
experience porous bones, bone loss, and even bone disease such as osteoporosis.
Not only that, Manganese deficiency can cause bow legs, poorly developed
cartilage, loss of muscle coordination, and even nerve message transmission
failure. This last problem, involving nerve message transmission,
just may be the most dangerous of the effects. Muscles are commanded on proper
functioning by the use of nerve fibers called neurotransmitters. This is
something which occurs at the speed of lightning, enabling you to function
normally. Every activity in the body, from the heart beating to legs
running to typing on a keyboard is regulated by

The role of the Parkinsons disease gene PARK9 in essential cellular pathways and the manganese homeostasis network in yeast |...
YPK9 (Yeast PARK9; also known as YOR291W) is a non-essential yeast gene predicted by sequence to encode a transmembrane P-type transport ATPase. However, its substrate specificity is unknown. Mutations in the human homolog of YPK9, ATP13A2/PARK9, have been linked to genetic forms of early onset parkinsonism. We previously described a strong genetic interaction between Ypk9 and another Parkinsons disease (PD) protein alpha-synuclein in multiple model systems, and a role for Ypk9 in manganese detoxification in yeast. In humans, environmental exposure to toxic levels of manganese causes a syndrome similar to PD and is thus an environmental risk factor for the disease. How manganese contributes to neurodegeneration is poorly understood. Here we describe multiple genome-wide screens in yeast aimed at defining the cellular function of Ypk9 and the mechanisms by which it protects cells from manganese toxicity. In physiological conditions, we found that Ypk9 genetically interacts with essential genes involved

Central regulator of manganese homeostasis that regulates the expression of both manganese uptake and efflux systems (PubMed:27748968, PubMed:10760146, PubMed:12950915). In the presence of high levels of manganese, it mediates repression of the manganese uptake systems MntH and MntABCD and activation of the efflux systems MneP and MneS. Binds with high affinity to the regulatory regions of its target genes (PubMed:27748968, PubMed:12950915). The manganese concentration required for activation of efflux is higher than that for repression of uptake (PubMed:27748968).

Y1 - 2004/11/1. N2 - Ammonia has been strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy (HE), and astrocytes appear to be the primary target of ammonia neurotoxicity. Recent work has shown that manganese also plays a role in the pathogenesis of HE and causes astrocyte morphologic and functional changes similar to ammonia. We therefore investigated whether a combination of these compounds could produce additive/synergistic effects. Cultured astrocytes treated with 5 mM ammonia (NH 4Cl) along with 100 μM manganese acetate (MnAc) for 3 h showed a 55-65% increase in free radical production over ammonia or manganese alone (P , 0.05). There was also a 50% decrease in the mitochondrial membrane potential (Δ Ψ m) at 24 h following treatment with NH 4Cl (5 mM) plus MnAc (50 μ M) (P , 0.05), as ...

Analysis of Measured Manganese Concentrations:. 1. Calculate the average: We calculated the average of the manganese measurements (shown by the black diamond in the graph below). We compared this average to the long-term comparison level (thick line on the graph below). The long-term comparison level represents the level of manganese in the air that is below levels associated with health concerns, even if someone breathed air containing manganese at that level all day, every day over their lifetime. Result: The average manganese level for the samples collected was slightly above the long-term comparison level. There is a potential for levels of health concern for long-term continuous exposure, particularly in areas closer to sources where concentrations are higher. ...

Welding and manganese: potential health effects | 2015-04-13 | ISHN
Welding fumes are composed of metals and most fumes contain a small percentage of manganese. There is a concern by workers, employers, and health professionals about potential neurological effects associated with exposure to manganese in welding fumes. NIOSH has been conducting research and reviewing the published scientific literature to assess this problem. Manganese is an essential nutrient. A healthy person with normal liver and kidney function can excrete excess dietary manganese. Inhaled manganese is of greater concern because it bypasses the bodys normal defense mechanisms. . . .

Description: Manganese is a very common compound that can be found everywhere on earth. Manganese is one out of three toxic essential trace elements, which means that it is not only necessary for humans to survive, but it is also toxic when too high concentrations are present in a human body. Manganese deficiency produces growth disorders, alters skeletal and cartilage formation and impairs reproduction. Industrial workers absorb manganese mainly through the lungs ...

Oxygen Evolving Reactions by Synthetic Manganese Complexes
The development of efficient catalyst for water oxidation is of paramount importance to artificial photosynthesis, but before this can be achieved a deeper understanding of this reaction is essential. In nature this reaction occurs in a tetranuclear Mn-cluster which serves as the work-horse of oxygenic photosynthesis. This thesis summarises my efforts at developing molecular systems capable of mimicking this complex employing a biomimetic approach.. Three different approaches towards this goal are described here-in. The first section describes a screening study, in which a number of manganese complexes were tested to see whether or not they were capable of catalysing the formation of dioxygen when treated with different oxidants (Papers I). For those reactions in which dioxygen formation was observed the reactions were repeated in labelled water and the incorporation of labelled O-atoms was studied by mass spectrometry. This allowed us to determine to what extent water was the source of the ...

N2 - Neurodegenerative diseases affect a significant portion of the aging population. Several lines of evidence suggest a positive association between environmental exposures, which are common and cumulative in a lifetime, and development of neurodegenerative diseases. Environmental or occupational exposure to manganese (Mn) has been implicated in neurodegeneration due to its ability to induce mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and a-synuclein (α-Syn) aggregation. The role of the α-Syn protein vis-a-vis Mn is controversial, as it seemingly plays a duplicitous role in neuroprotection and neurodegeneration. α-Syn has low affinity for Mn, however an indirect interaction cannot be ruled out. In this review we will examine the current knowledge surrounding the interaction of α-Syn and Mn in ...

Effect of Manganese on energy metabolism in young and adult rat brain: Ameliorating effect of Alpha-Tocopherol | International...
Trace amounts of Manganese (Mn) are essential for the proper functioning of a variety of physiological processes, including development, in all living organisms. However, several studies indicate that high Mn levels may be toxic to terrestrial and aquatic organisms, especially due to its neurotoxic properties. In the present study, the young and adult albino rats (2 months and 4 months old) were exposed to low dose (2.5mg/kg body weight) and high dose (5mg/kg body weight) of Mn through intraperitoneal injection for a period of 3 weeks and a separate batch treated with Mn was left for a period of one week supplementation with Alpha-tocopherol at a dose of 5mg/kg body weightalong with Mn until the end of the study.Control animals received only deionized water without Mn. In the present study, it was observed that, the potential effect of Adenosine Triphosphatase (ATPase) activity (EC 3.6.1.3); Mg2+ATPase and Na+K+ ATPase activities were assayed. From our observation, it was cleared that the ...
manganese ore mechanical
Manganese ores containing iron oxides are first reduced in blast furnaces or electric furnaces with carbon to yield ferromanganese, which in turn is used in steelmaking. Adding manganese, which has a greater affinity for sulfur than does iron, converts the low-melting iron sulfide in steel to high-melting manganese sulfide. Produced without manganese, steel breaks up when hot-rolled or forged.. Get Price ...

Manganese - Vegan Health
Manganese is a mineral that is essential for humans. It is part of the antioxidant system in the mitochondria, and is also involved in metabolism, bone development, and the creation of collagen for wound healing. Manganese is found in a wide range of plant foods.. Although manganese is an essential nutrient, manganese toxicity has been relatively common in places where workers are accidentally exposed to large amounts of manganese. Manganese in drinking water is the biggest concern since manganese in food is not as easily absorbed.. Manganese toxicity symptoms tend to be neurological problems. Headaches, muscle cramps, fatigue, and aggressiveness are early signs of manganese toxicity, which can then proceed into Parkinsons disease-like symptoms such as tremors (6). People with manganese toxicity have more of a tendency to fall backwards than do those with Parkinsons (6). Studies have been mixed on whether chelation therapy, the only therapy currently available, is successful at treating overt ...
Province of Manitoba | News Releases | Information on Manganese in Drinking Water for Private Well Owners
The province advises that a number of wells in Manitoba may exceed a new health-based guideline for manganese. Previously, manganese was thought to have only esthetic impacts. Based on new evidence, Health Canada developed a health-based limit of 0.12 mg/L for total manganese in drinking water. In December 2020, the new guideline for manganese was adopted as a drinking water standard in Manitoba.. Manganese is a naturally occurring trace element, commonly found in well water throughout Canada. Some well owners treat for manganese, as it is often associated with discoloured (brown or blackish) water.. Manganese is an essential element and consumption of small amounts is part of a healthy diet. Manganese in solid food is usually not a concern, but too much manganese in drinking water has been associated with some adverse health effects.. The new evidence indicates that drinking water with high levels of manganese may harm brain development in infants and young children. For adults and older ...

Abstract: Although manganese (Mn) is an essential trace element for human development and growth, chronic exposure to excessive Mn levels can result in psychiatric and motor disturbances, referred to as manganism. However, there are no known mechanism(s) for efflux of excess Mn from mammalian cells. Here, we test the hypothesis that the cytoplasmic iron (Fe) exporter ferroportin (Fpn) may also function as a Mn exporter to attenuate Mn toxicity. Using an inducible human embryonic kidney (HEK293T) cell model, we examined the influence of Fpn expression on Mn-induced cytotoxicity and intracellular Mn concentrations. We found that induction of an Fpn-green fluorescent protein fusion protein in HEK293T cells was cytoprotective against several measures of Mn toxicity, including Mn-induced cell membrane leakage and Mn-induced reductions in glutamate uptake. Fpn-green fluorescent protein mediated cytoprotection correlated with decreased Mn accumulation following Mn exposure. Thus, Fpn expression reduces ...

ENH1018/EP273: Nutrient Deficiencies of Landscape and Field-Grown Palms in Florida
Manganese deficiency occurs in a wide range of palm species. It is caused by insufficient Mn in the soil or by high soil pH, which greatly reduces Mn availability. In soils where Mn is marginally sufficient, cold soil temperatures may cause temporary Mn deficiency by reducing root activity levels. This is particularly common on Cocos nucifera in Florida. Composted sewage sludge and manure products have also been shown to strongly bind Mn when used as fertilizers or as soil amendments for palms (Figure 21).. Symptoms of Mn deficiency occur on the newest leaves, which emerge chlorotic with longitudinal necrotic streaks (Figures 15 and 16). As the deficiency progresses, newly emerging leaflets appear necrotic and withered on all but basal portions of the leaflets. This withering results in a curling of the leaflets about the rachis giving the leaf a frizzled appearance (frizzletop) (Figures 17, 18, and 19). Within a single leaf, Mn deficiency symptoms are most severe at the base of the leaf and ...
Structural dynamics of the manganese-stabilizing protein - Effect of pH, calcium, and manganese
The photosystem-II-associated 33-kDa extrinsic manganese-stabilizing protein is found in all oxygen-evolving organisms. In this paper, we show that this protein undergoes pH-induced conformational changes in the physiological pH range. At a neutral pH of 7.2, the hydrophobic amino acid residues that are most likely located inside the beta barrel are closed and the protein binds neither Mn2+ nor Ca2+ ions. When the protein is transferred to a solution with a slightly acidic pH of 5.7, hydrophobic amino acid residues become exposed to the surrounding medium, enabling them to bind the fluorescent probe 8,1-ANS. At this pH-induced open state, Mn2+ and Ca2+ bind to the manganese-stabilizing protein. The pH values used in this study, 7.2 and 5.7, are typical of the pH found in the thylakoid lumen in the dark and light, respectively. A model is presented in which the manganese-stabilizing protein undergoes a pH-dependent conformational change that in turn influences its capacity to bind calcium and ...

Manganese accumulation in plants of the mining zone of Hidalgo, Mexico
Soil, sediments, water and plant samples from the mining zone of Molango were collected and analyzed and Mn-tolerant and Mn-accumulator plants were identified. Soil and sediments presented moderately alkaline and reducing conditions, a normal electrical conductivity, a sandy texture and medium-to-high cation exchange capacities. These properties favored the presence of Mn2+, which is the form most easily assimilated by plants, and the total Mn concentration (11,637106,104 mg kg?1 dried weight, DW) was at phytotoxic level. Water was also an important Mn source. Equisetum hyemale and Telypteris kunthii survived in the presence of such Mn concentrations using an exclusion strategy, while Cnidoscolus multilobus, Platanus mexicana, Solanum diversifolium, Asclepius curassavica L. and Pluchea sympitifolia employed an accumulation strategy. These plants could be useful to re-vegetate and stabilize Mn tailings in order to decrease the erosion effects. ...
Studies on manganese phosphating of steel - IR@CECRI
A new manganese phosphating bath which produces coating relatively at lower temperature within a reasonable time by the use of chemical accelerators bas been developed. Bath formulation and operating conditions have been optimized by coating weight determinations. Corrosion resistance property of the resultant coatings has been evaluated in 3% NaCI by electrochemical methods such as potentiodynamic polarisation, linear polarisation and impedance measurements. Results of the electrochemical techniques have heen complemented by salt spray, humidity and immersion tests. Porosity coatin~ has also been studied. Results show that the newer manganese phosphate bath gives good coatin~ at 353 K within 30 minutes. Addition of nitrates of various metals as accelerator produces thicker coatin~. Corrosion studies have shown that the corrosion resistance of the resultant coatin~ are much superior than the conventional coating;.. ...
Microbiology Society Journals | Genome-based in silico detection of putative manganese transport systems in Lactobacillus...
Manganese serves an important function in Lactobacillus plantarum in protection against oxidative stress and this bacterium can accumulate Mn2+ up to millimolar levels intracellularly. Although the physiological role of Mn2+ and the uptake of this metal ion have been well documented, the only uptake system described so far for this bacterium is the Mn2+- and Cd2+-specific P-type ATPase (MntA). Recently, the genome of L. plantarum WCFS1 has been sequenced allowing in silico detection of genes potentially encoding Mn2+ transport systems, using established microbial Mn2+ transporters as the query sequence. This genome analysis revealed that L. plantarum WCFS1 encodes, besides the previously described mntA gene, an ABC transport system (mtsCBA) and three genes encoding Nramp transporters (mntH1, mntH2 and mntH3). The expression of three (mtsCBA, mntH1 and mntH2) of the five transport systems was specifically derepressed or induced upon Mn2+ limitation, supporting their role in Mn2+ homeostasis in L.

Removing Iron and Manganese from Well Water - Doing Business In Michigan
Once your well water is tested and you are told what type and amounts of iron and manganese are in the water, water treatment specialists like the ones at Reynolds Water Conditioning can help you determine the best treatment option for your home. It is important to note that some filtration such as oxidation filtration which injects oxygen into the water to remove impurities only removes iron. The water will need an additional chemical treatment to remove manganese. Water softeners are often installed to treat hard water. They can also remove small amount of iron and manganese. Water softening units use an ion exchange process which replaces iron and manganese with sodium. The metals are removed from the softeners filtering resin through a process of backwashing. Another treatment option to remove iron and manganese from water is through a point of use reverse osmosis systems. This treats water at the tap which is usually where drinking and cooking water is drawn from. The filter uses different ...
Similar papers for Manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI): methodological and practical considerations. -...
Manganese-enhanced MRI (MEMRI) is being increasingly used for MRI in animals due to the unique T1 contrast that is sensitive to a number of biological processes. Three specific uses of MEMRI have been demonstrated: to visualize activity in the brain and the heart; to trace neuronal specific connections in the brain; and to enhance the brain cytoarchitecture after a systemic dose. Based on an ever-growing number of applications, MEMRI is proving useful as a new molecular imaging method to visualize functional neural circuits and anatomy as well as function in the brain in vivo. Paramount to the successful application of MEMRI is the ability to deliver Mn2+ to the site of interest at an appropriate dose and in a time-efficient manner. A major drawback to the use of Mn2+ as a contrast agent is its cellular toxicity. Therefore, it is critical to use as low a dose as possible. In the present work the different approaches to MEMRI are reviewed from a practical standpoint. Emphasis is given to the experimental

Enrichment of Cobalt Values by Dry Magnetic Separation from Low-Grade Manganese Ores of Bonai-Keonjhar Belt, Orissa
Resource potential of cobalt in India is practically negligible. Cobalt in marine manganese
nodule though known since long, its report from terrestrial manganese ore is least observed. This
paper reports the occurrence of cobalt in low-grade manganese ores of Bonai-Keonjhar belt,
Orissa, eastern India and describes methods for its possible enrichment. Cobalt is associated with
manganese minerals like lithiophorite (~CoO: 1.2%) and cryptomelane (~CoO: 0.2%). A feed of
low-grade siliceous manganese ore containing 26% Mn and 32% SiO2 and 0.08% Co was subjected to physical beneficiation. By processing the low-grade siliceous ore on a dry belt
magnetic separator, a product with 47% Mn at 60% recovery could be obtained. It was observed
that along with manganese the cobalt value gets enriched (~Co: 0.38%) more than four times in
comparison to the feed. Some other traces like Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Li etc. also get enriched in the
magnetic product. Thus, through simple dry magnetic separation a low-valued
Enhancing effect of manganese on L-DOPA-induced apoptosis in PC12 cells: role of oxidative stress - UnissResearch
L-DOPA and manganese both induce oxidative stress-mediated apoptosis in catecholaminergic PC12 cells. In this study, exposure of PC12 cells to 0.2 mM MnCl2 or 10-20 μM L-DOPA neither affected cell viability, determined by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, nor induced apoptosis, tested by flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, and the TUNEL technique. L-DOPA (50 μM) induced decreases in both cell viability and apoptosis. When 0.2 mM MnCl2 was associated with 10, 20, or 50 μM L-DOPA, a concentration-dependent decrease in cell viability was observed. Apoptotic cell death also occurred. In addition, manganese inhibited L-DOPA effects on dopamine (DA) metabolism (i.e., increases in DA and its acidic metabolite levels in both cell lysate and incubation medium). The antioxidant N-acetyl-L-cysteine significantly inhibited decreases in cell viability, apoptosis, and changes in DA metabolism induced by the manganese association with L-DOPA. An increase in ...

Manganese - New World Encyclopedia
Manganese is essential to iron and steel production by virtue of its sulfur-fixing, deoxidizing, and alloying properties. Steelmaking, including its ironmaking component, has accounted for most manganese demand-presently in the range of 85-90 percent of the total demand. Among its other uses, manganese is a key component of low-cost stainless steel formulations and certain widely used aluminum alloys. It is also added to gasoline to reduce engine knock. At low concentrations, manganese is used to decolorize glass, as it removes the greenish tinge generated by the presence of iron; at higher concentrations, it is used to make violet-colored glass. Manganese dioxide, a component of natural umber, is useful as a black-brown pigment in paint. It is also a catalyst and is used in the original type of dry cell battery. Potassium permanganate is a potent oxidizer used in chemical reactions; it is also used in medicine as a disinfectant. The technique known as manganese phosphating (or Parkerizing) is ...

Rats with MHE were established by partially ligating the portal vein and fed a manganese diet (MHE-M, 10mg per kg feed; n=24), a no-manganese diet (MHE-N; n=24) and a half-manganese diet (MHE-H; n=24) for 2, 4, 6 and 8weeks, with six rats in each subgroup ...
HAUSMANNITE (Manganese Oxide)
Hausmannite is usually not a beautiful mineral; however some specimens are truly wonderful. It can have a bright metallic luster and form well-shaped crystals. The crystals are tetragonal dipyramids, an eight faced form that looks psuedo-octahedral. Indeed at first look, good crystals of hausmannite appear to be octahedrons like those formed by the spinel group of minerals. The formula of hausmannite, (Mn+2)(Mn+3)2O 4, would also seem to place it in the spinel group. Their general formula is AB2 O4, where A can be a manganese with a positive two charge and B can be a manganese with a positive three (+3) charge. However, those A and B positions are filled with other elements when either one has a manganese ion present. Both sites can not accommodate a manganese ion at the same time and still preserve the isometric structure. Ergo, hausmannite has a distorted spinel structure that produces a tetragonal symmetry and a basal cleavage not possible in the spinel group of minerals. At much higher ...

Manganese-Enhanced MRI: A New Avenue of Functional and Structural Imaging in Neuroscience | Frontiers Research Topic
To elucidate the functional circuitry underlying the mechanisms of information processing in the brain, we need to monitor whole-brain activity changes when an animal displays a specific behavior or function, or how these patterns are upset in a neurological disorder. Therefore, a reliable method for analyzing the neuronal activity throughout the entire brain volume is essential.Manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) or activation-induced manganese-dependent MRI (AIM-MRI) is one of the promising methods for investigating neuronal activities and neuronal pathways in the brain.Mn2+ is a paramagnetic ion, which enhances MRI contrast by shortening the longitudinal relaxation time (T1) of H+. In AIM-MRI, Mn2+ is used as a surrogate marker of Ca2+ influx, since it can enter neurons through voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels and cannot be excreted by the Ca2+ extrusion mechanisms such as Na+/Ca2+-exchanger and Ca2+-ATPase. Mn2+ therefore accumulates in neurons in an activity-dependent manner. Thus,

The extraction of manganese from a semi-oxidized manganese ore was investigated with sucrose as the reducing agent in dilute sulfuric acid medium. The kinetics of leaching manganese from the complex ore containing MnCO3 and MnO2 was also investigated. The effects of sucrose and sulfuric acid concentrations, leaching temperature and reaction time on the total Mn (TMn), MnO2 and MnCO3 leaching were investigated. Results showed that MnCO3 could more easily react with hydrogen ions than MnO2 in ores, and MnO2 decomposition could be advantageous for MnCO3 leaching. The leaching efficiencies of 91.8% for total Mn, 91.4% for MnO2 and 96.9% for MnCO3 were obtained under the following optimized conditions: 0.035 mol/L sucrose concentration, 5 mol/L sulfuric acid concentration, 60 min of reaction time and 363.2 K of leaching temperature. In addition, it was found that the leaching process of semi-oxidized manganese ore follows the shrinking core model and the leaching rate was controlled by chemical reaction and
Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment & Health - Neurological outcomes associated with low-level manganese exposure in an...
To our knowledge, this is first study to longitudinally explore changes to the CNS associated with Mn exposure among subjects who (i) were asymptomatic at baseline, (ii) had no prior occupational exposure to Mn, and (iii) had known baseline measures. The three methods of assessing neurological outcomes we selected allowed us to evaluate markers of in-vivo Mn exposure (MRI), clinical measures of parkinsonism (UPDRS3), and clinical measures of fine motor skill/dexterity (Grooved Pegboard). As a condition of entry into the study, all subjects were deemed asymptomatic, as assessed by a health screening questionnaire. Baseline UPDRS3 and Grooved Pegboard examinations confirmed subjects to be clinically normal, as UPDRS3 scores were within the normal range (26), and Grooved Pegboard completion times were within typical age- and gender-specific reference ranges. Twenty-five percent of the cohort self-reported using respirators. However, field research staff observed very poor respirator practices; for ...
Effects of Manganese Chloride on Blood Formation in Rabbits by Donald Wayne Kerr
The objectives of these investigations were to determine the effect of manganese on the following: red and white blood cell counts, differential counts, packed cell volume, hemoglobin, reticulocyte composition, and manganese and iron determinations in respect to possible changes in these measurements with prolonged exposure to manganese.
Manganese dioxide - Registration Dossier - ECHA
In accordance with section 1 of REACH Annex XI (testing does not appear scientifically necessary), the long-term or reproductive toxicity to birds study (required in section 9.6.1.) does not need to be conducted as the substance is not classified as hazardous for environmental effects and the chemical safety assessment concludes that the substance is of no immediate concern to the environment. The available data are adequate for classification and labelling purposes and PBT assessment is not required for inorganic substances so no further testing is required. Furthermore, any ionic metal leaching out of the substance in environmental conditions is predicted to bind strongly to soil and sediments. On this basis the bioavailable concentration of manganese from the substances to terrestrial organisms and ultimately to birds is predicted to be much less than the background concentration of manganese in European soils (428.6 mg Mn/kg according to Probabilistic Distribution of Manganese in European ...

Mutations in PMR1 suppress oxidative damage in yeast cells lacking superoxide dismutase. | Molecular and Cellular Biology
Mutants of Saccharomyces cerevisiae lacking a functional SOD1 gene encoding Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD) are sensitive to atmospheric levels of oxygen and are auxotrophic for lysine and methionine when grown in air. We have previously shown that these defects of SOD-deficient yeast cells can be overcome through mutations in either the BSD1 or BSD2 (bypass SOD defects) gene. In this study, the wild-type allele of BSD1 was cloned by functional complementation and was physically mapped to the left arm of chromosome VII. BSD1 is identical to PMR1, encoding a member of the P-type ATPase family that localizes to the Golgi apparatus. PMR1 is thought to function in calcium metabolism, and we provide evidence that PMR1 also participates in the homeostasis of manganese ions. Cells lacking a functional PMR1 gene accumulate elevated levels of intracellular manganese and are also extremely sensitive to manganese ion toxicity. We demonstrate that mutations in PMR1 bypass SOD deficiency through a mechanism ...
