Corneal injuries blind approximately 15 million people worldwide annually. Current methods of treatment have several disadvantages with respect to cost and availability. This study evaluated a small intestine submucosa (SIS) xenograft treatment for a severe corneal injury. SIS could be a favorable alternative to the current treatment methods, because it is inexpensive to produce and abundant where pigs are consumed. A severe ocular injury was created in the right eye of 5 rabbits by n-heptanol and mechanical debridement of the cornea and limbus. The cornea was then evaluated with fluorescence stain and a SIS xenograft was used for treatment. Clinical evaluations were made 14 days post-operatively and graded as a success if the corneal surface appeared smooth and avascular, or graded as a failure if the corneal surface demonstrated revascularization or irregularity. Histological evaluation of the cornea was done after 14 days and graded as a success if corneal epithelium was present without conjunctival
This retrospective study was designed to evaluate subjects treated for mandibular lesions with segmental resection in the oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic of the study institution between June 1992 and May 2015, and thereafter to characterize those who developed spontaneous bone regeneration. The cases of 636 patients were evaluated. The study was granted an exemption in writing from ethical clearance by the research and ethics committee of the institution because of the retrospective design. All known patients who presented spontaneous bone regeneration within this period were included in the study. The diagnosis of spontaneous bone regeneration was made postoperatively, during routine clinical and radiographic follow-up examinations of the surgical sites. Information obtained from the hospital register, case files, and plain radiographs of the subjects were recorded in a pro-forma questionnaire designed for the study. The following information was recorded: age, sex, type of mandibular ...

When a player injures a joint, such as an ankle sprain in athletics or elbow injury in tennis, the injured joint should be taped to limit movement, stabilise the joint and protect the trauma site from further damage. Joint soft tissue is particularly vulnerable to damage after injury. By taping, such as with zinc oxide tape, the joint is reinforced and kept in position. If joints are weak, players can tape joints prior to sport as a means of support to reduce risk of injury.. Tapes used on joints are less elastic to restrict movement, but tapes used on the muscles that stick directly to the skin, such as elastic adhesive bandages, aim to provide controlled support to movement and expand with the muscle with flex and contraction. Compression tapes that do not stick to the skin directly are usually used after a sporting injury to treat the trauma site, and are either wrapped around the wounded limb or joint. In sports matches, such as rugby and tennis, first aid officers or paramedics, usually ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Endodontic intervention in the traumatic bone cyst. AU - Newton, Carl W.. AU - Zunt, Susan. PY - 1987. Y1 - 1987. N2 - A 44-yr-old woman was seen with an intrabony multilocular radiolucency of the posterior mandible in the area of the left first molar. A full gold crown had been placed 7 yr previously, and a periapical radiograph at that time had revealed mild sclerosis of the periapical bone. After vitality of the pulp was confirmed, endodontic therapy was performed prior to the surgical exploration of the lesion. At surgery an empty intrabony cavity was present and a clinical diagnosis of traumatic bone cyst was made. Followup at 2 yr revealed healing with marked sclerosis. Temas de actualidad / Current topics Work-related accidents and diseases take a heavy toll worldwide1 Key words: occupational health, occupational diseases, occupational accidents, accident prevention.. While some two million workers die each year from work-related accidents and diseases, the full toll to workers around the world is much higher than that. Depending on the type of job, for every fatal accident that occurs, there are 500 to 2 000 injuries. Further, the large majority of occupational deaths and accidents could be prevented if countries applied existing, available accident prevention strategies and practices, according to a recent report from the International Labor Organization (ILO). The ILO report was prepared for the XVIth World Congress on Occupational Safety and Health at Work, which was held in Vienna, Austria, at the end of May 2002. Entitled Introductory Report: Decent Work ¾ Safe Work, the ILO document said that the number of estimated annual deaths among workers had ...

We compare reconstructions based on the radiative transport and diffusion equations in optical tomography for media of small sizes. While it is well known that the diffusion approximation is less accurate to describe light propagation in such media, it has not yet been shown how this inaccuracy affects the images obtained with model-based iterative image reconstructions schemes. Using synthetic nondifferential data we calculate the error in the reconstructed images of optical properties as functions of source modulation frequency, noise level in measurement, and diffusion extrapolation length. We observe that the differences between diffusion and transport reconstructions are large when high modulation frequencies and noise-free data are used in the reconstructions. When the noise in data reaches a certain level, approximately 12% in our simulations, the differences between diffusion- and transport-based reconstructions become almost indistinguishable. Given that state-of-the-art optical imaging ...
The large (6″ diameter), rugged polyurethane disc structure of the BCS can cover practically any size chest trauma site. The thickness of the disc prevents any disc wrinkling from occurring during application. In addition, the wound side of the disc is covered with a thick layer of jell-based adhesive, strong enough to not only seal over hair and blood but also flexible enough to be removed and reapplied to the trauma site if required. These critical characteristics of the BCS ensure that treatment of pneumothorax and prevention tension pneumothorax can be accomplished quickly, directly, and effectively.. ...
This is one of my absolute favorite ways to treat myself! When I first started working for LUSH, I probably used a face mask every single day, and my skin loved me for it! Well, I cant exactly afford that anymore, but Ive learned how to get the same results at home, and ever kick it up a notch. Give yourself 45 minutes tonight and indulge in this at-home mini facial!. PART ONE: DIY MICRODERMABRASION. This is as simple as getting out your box of baking soda. Microdermabrasion is one of the most expensive (and, admittedly, effective) spa treatments out there. It involves slowly exfoliating the skin with a diamond-tipped rotary device that sort of feels like sandpaper, but makes your skin glow afterwards for the low low price of $150+ per session (6 sessions usually recommended). I had microderm three or four times when I worked for a spa, and it really is nice. But baking soda is just as effected and a billion times cheaper. See for yourself!. Take a tablespoon of baking soda and splash in just ...
Regarding your second question, it just so happens Im reading at the moment a book on the cultural evolution of rotary devices! I do believe that modular components can create blind spots, but that this is mainly due to the fact that cultural traits - especially technological ones - are very complex ones and span over multiple levels of possible modularity, each of which may not necessarily find their boundaries at the place as the technology itself. Consider the wheel: it seems rather a simple device, a case of an artefactual module if there is one. Although the wheel may seem a module par excellence, it, in fact, requires a lot of tinkering to construct a proper interface for its integration in a new technology, and I believe this is where the blind spots emerge: in generating an interface to combine modules into.. Consider the underlying constraints in the design problems, production, and use of the wheel. The invention of the wheel is really the invention of the wheel-and-axle mechanism. ...
Implementation of ISO 45001 standard. What is ISO 45001? Why companies implementation of H&S system?. According to the ILO, more than 1.2 million work-related accidents occur worldwide each year, killing an estimated 50,000 people or causing permanent disability. In order to reduce accidents at work and occupational health, and to prevent occupational diseases, the UK Standards Organization, with the help of a number of certification firms, first developed the OHSAS 18001 standard, followed by the ISO ISO. ISO 45001, based on the structure used in ISO 9001.. The purpose of implementing the ISO 45001 standard is to maintain the health of staff, and other stakeholders, and to prevent accidents and occupational diseases. Therefore, this standard identifies and controls the risks that can endanger the health of personnel and stakeholders.. Yeah. Traditional hyperextensions arent the way to go. You should not be moving a loaded lumbar spine. You need to train to stabilize it. This means isometric exercises that train the muscles around your lumbar spine to resist movement and thus to protect the spine. So exercises like planks, Pallof presses are good. Glute bridges require you to hold your lower back in position, so they would be OK if you are careful that the movement comes from your hips, not from your lumbar spine. You can do a modified hyperextension that really only goes from slightly flexed to neutral, not into extension. You can do that off the end of a bench, or at many commercial gyms that have a hyperextension bench. You can train your hips and thoracic spine for mobility, but your lumbar spine for stability. Twisting at the lumbar level should be avoided. No situps or traditional crunches. Look up something called McGill curlups, or McGill crunches ...

Other influences from below the jaw joint can also contribute to balance and proper function of the jaw joint such as myofascial tension in the muscles of the neck, shoulder girdle and spine as they attach to the skull. Influences from as far away as the bottom of the feet affect how the stress and strain patterns are influenced as they project through the jaw joint and skull. For example, if someone has an asymmetrically fallen arch on one foot, that essentially drops that lower extremity further to the floor and influences the pelvis to sidebend to that side. All motion in the body is coupled meaning if it sidebends it also rotates. So, when the pelvis sidebends to the side of the essentially short leg it also rotates taking all the muscles and their fascial strain patterns with it. This sidebending and rotating influence travels up the system ending in the fascial attachments in the scalp that covers the skull. This fascial asymmetry and its effects had to pass right through the neck muscles ...

Derivative cutting is a texture-edge cutting of chip bottom side, which happens all the time in machining with textured tools. Two new types of textured tools are developed and fabricated: a micro-textured tool with chamfered texture edge (CTE) tool and a multiscale textured (MSTT) tool with the texture surface below the rake face. The effectiveness of the tools on inhibiting derivative cutting is investigated at different cutting velocities. For the CTE tool, the inhibiting effect is more pronounced with the increase in the chamfer angle, but the severe rake face wear eventually leads to the occurrence of derivative cutting. Compared with the CTE tool, the multiscale textures of the MSTT tool provide more sustainable effectiveness in inhibiting derivative cutting. The inhibition mechanisms of the two types of textured tools are discussed. ...
