Literature report is lacking on pharmacological studies of the plant Heteropterys aphrodisiaca, endemic to the scrublands of Brazil. the present study was carried out to investigate the effects of oral dosing with extract BST0298 from this plant, on learning and on memory, in young (3-6-month-old) and aged (20-28-month-old) rats. the aged animals presented significant memory deficits in both the passive avoidance and T-maze left/right discrimination tests. Treatment for 7 days (50 mg/kg) or 26 days (100 mg/kg) with extract BST0298 restored the memory deficits in the passive avoidance test. However, no improvement in memory was observed after acute administration of extract BST0298 (100 mg.kg) in aged rats. An improvement in learning was also observed in the left/right discrimination test in aged rats treated for 109 days with BST0298 at a dose of 50 mg/kg. These results suggest that treatment for 7 days or more with H. aphrodisiaca improves learning and memory deficits in aged rats. (C) 2002 ...
A crude acerola polyphenol fraction (C-AP) was prepared by subjecting an acerola extract to a C18 cartridge column, and eluting the adsorbed fraction with ethanol containing 10% of acetic acid. C-AP appeared in a previous study to have an inhibitory effect on α-glucosidase and particularly on maltase activities. To elucidate the antihyperglycemic effect of C-AP further, we examined the regulation by C-AP of glucose uptake in Caco-2 cell; this resulted in the inhibition of glucose uptake. We next conducted single administration tests of glucose and maltose to ICR mice to investigate whether C-AP really controlled the intestinal glucose absorption in an animal body. The results showed that C-AP significantly suppressed the plasma glucose level after administering both glucose and maltose, suggesting that C-AP had a preventive effect on hyperglycemia in the postprandial state. The mechanism for this effect is considered to have been both suppression of the intestinal glucose transport and the ...
ACEROLA AS FOOD What is acerola? Acerola or West Indian cherry is a small fruit, 1 - 3cm. in diameter, which comes from a fruit tree called acerolo or acerola (Malpighia emarginata). Acerola receives interest in the enormous wealth of vitamin C that contains, being one of the richest fruits in

A Acerola (Malpighia emarginata): A Caribbean berry that is one of the worlds richest natural sources of vitamin C; helps brighten uneven skin tone.Actinidia c
Location: The plant prefers full sun for fruit development, giving rise to the problem of winter protection in harsher climates. Shaded trees fruit, but at reduced fruit densities, and the plants themselves become somewhat spindly. Due to its shallow and smaller root system, acerola can be interplanted with other crops more closely than many trees.. Soil: Acerolas grows in marl, limestone, clay and other heavy soils as long as it drains well; waterlogging of roots will cause plant death. Soil pH should be 6.5-7.5 as acid soils do not promote vigorous growth. Liming of trees and working into the soil is a common practice and necessary for high productivity.. Irrigation: The acerola does best with 1000-2000 mm of water. However, as mentioned, acerola is drought-tolerant. Irrigation can be used to cause flowering and can regulate flower cycles. Under good constant irrigation, acerola will flower all year, with between 1 and 3 flowering peaks. Acerola does well with both overhead and drip ...

was re-examined by Harrington & Potter (1997: 262) who considered it a synonym to replace the younger epithet jurana. This can hardly be accepted since the spores of S. emarginata are distinctly larger (38-41.5 x 16-18 m fide Le Gal 1953). The authors did not provide a redescription of the type specimen, nor did any other author. It seems further unlikely that the so far host-specific S. jurana occurs in S-Asia on a probably different host. No sequence data are available referring to the type of S. emarginata. Hence, the identity of S. emarginata remains unsolved. The name emarginata is said to refer to the truncate spore ends, a character which led Harrington to believe in a synonymy with S. jurana. Similarly Le Gal (1953: 293) identified a single, badly preserved apothecium from a collection from Madagaskar as Plectania coccinea var. jurana. ...
Stigmaphyllonovatum, family- Malpighiaceae is a medicinal plant used in the traditional treatment of fever and malaria in rural areas in Benin City, Edo State. The research was conducted to determine the phytochemical screening and antimalarial activity of methanol extract of the plant leaf using Balb/c mice infected with Plasmodium falciparum. The plant leaves were collected, dried, pulverised and extracted with methanol solvent in a soxhlet extractor for eight hours. The extract was concentrated with rotary evaporator and a portion was used for phytochemical screening. The acute toxicity test was determined to estimate the lethal dose (LD50) value of the extract inbalb/c albino mice while malaria chemo suppressive activities were conducted along with quinine to determine the antimalarial potency of the plant extract in Plasmodium -infected balb/c albino mice. Alkaloids, glycosides, phenolics, flavonoids and terpenoids were present while tannin was absent. The antimalarial activities revealed ...

Clean labeling and the sustainable trend to unprocessed food set new standards for production of food and dietary supplements today. E-numbers on food labels are getting more and more unpopular and influence the consumers decision to buy a product. Producers try to meet the users concerns by reducing additives or - if this is not an option due to functional reasons - to replace them by natural ingredients. This way, E-numbers can be erased and the product itself is perceived to have an higher value in the eyes of many consumers. Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is one substances that is often applied to food and beverage products due to its clear functional benefits. Acerola powder is an excellent provider of natural vitamin C, that makes the E-number 300 on labels expensible. But the processing of Acerola involves certain imperatives as the quality of the production process is key for the later quality of products. The Brasilian company Duas Rodas invested foresighted in research and technology ...
Super foods definitely arent going anywhere in 2017, in fact if anything the list is getting longer - and the same can be said for your vocabulary. New introductions set for 2017 include kava, rose, acerola, super greens (wheatgrass), holy basil, medicinal mushrooms (reishi and chaga) and adaptogenic herbs (maca and ashwagandha) - to name just a few. Some weve heard of, some were excited to try. But here at HQ, super foods are far more than trends - yes, were proud that we know how to pronounce ashwagandha, but more, were proud that were taking advantage of the incredible benefits of these superfoods in our products - from the hormone balancing, energising effects of maca in our bliss balls, to the anti-ageing, blood building benefits of wheatgrass in our salsa verde. And our new superfood on the scene? Acerola. Historically, it was used to treat a whole host of ailments from inflammation to scurvy, but today is well known for its list of body loving benefits: ...
This paper aims to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics, sensory acceptance, and purchase intent of acerola nectar sweetened with sucrose and other sweeteners (neotame, sucralose and stevia extracts with 40%, 60%, 80%, and 95% rebaudioside A). The analyses were carried out for pH, soluble solids, total titratable acidity, ascorbic acid, and colorimetry (L*a*b). The acceptance test was performed by 120 consumers who evaluated the appearance, aroma, flavor, texture, and overall impression of the samples using a 9-cm unstructured hedonic scale. Furthermore, the consumers were asked to rate overall purchase intent along the scale anchored with (1) would definitely not purchase to (5) would definitely purchase. The results were evaluated using analysis of variance/Tukey test and the internal preference mapping technique. The acerola nectar samples did not differ significantly (p,0.05) between themselves in terms of vitamin C content and total titratable acidity. As for appearance and ...

As you may have seen elsewhere, in mid February my wife and I suffered the loss of our home in a fire, in the hills of central Massachusetts. The good news is that we got out safely and had no animals in our care at the time. The fire crews were able to contain the fire from spreading, in what turned into a 3-alarm, 5-hour-long ordeal in subzero temperatures; they did amazing work, and no one was injured. The bad news is that all of my physical historical materials and research of 30 years have gone up in smoke. As a result I have decided to suspend this blog for the time being. It will remain online as a resource for those interested in the history of glass and glassmaking in the seventeenth century and beyond. I do intend to resume writing when I can, but for now my time and energy are required in getting us back on our feet ...

Most fruit tree bloom-times are listed in order of earliest to latest. Good cross pollination must include comparable bloom-times. Ive found it critical in both apples and cherries. A Gravenstein apple is a very early bloomer (its also a triploid and perhaps a bad example because it needs two pollen sources) ...and though many apples could pollinate it, only those blooming at the same time (like Transparent and Summer Red) will actually work ...

I submit that there is a difference between plants created via selective breeding and cross pollination - as could have occured in nature - and those which man has created via trans species genetic transplanted material, artificial gene manipulation and and other unnaturally created plant and animal forms. What my ancestors ate a thousand years ago and what was around a thousand years ago may have little resemblance to today, but is has everything to to with what I might be able to adapt to eat today. I probably eat healthier than 90% of the folks around, and ...
Last weekend, my grandparents visited, and as I know they have a love for gardens, flowers, and all things beautiful, we took them to Gibbs Gardens. Daffodils, cherry trees, and a couple other early spring blossoms looked gorgeous, flowering across the landscape. One bloom that was absent, however, was that of the Bradford pear. We passed many planted in the yards of homeowners on our drive to the gardens, however the tree was absent there. This absence is for very good reason, as the Bradford pear has become a hugely invasive species, choking out other native trees and plants in its wake.. First, a bit about the Bradford pear. It is originally native to China, and is a sub-species of a group known as the Callery pears, or almost any ornamental pear variety. It can grown between 30-50 feet tall and 20-30 feet wide. It is a rapid grower with a short to moderate lifespan. It is largely disease and pest resistant, and produces fruit through cross pollination with other Callery pear ...
among the the most wide-spread of the Parodia species and are quite variable in appearance. The great variability is due to the fact that cross pollination among different forms and different species (both in habitat and in collections) is very frequent and it can be quite difficult to determine what is the pure type and the cross, and the differences among individuals may be remarkable. Plants may differs considerably about the form and arrangement of the spines, stems, ribs and flowers colour with unclear morphological limits between the different forms. It can happen that two individuals of two different populations can look very similar and also, two plants of the same population can look very different. There is so much variation that most authors choose to lump them together ...
For decades, chemists and medicinal chemists have found in nature the source of inspiration for drug discovery and development. This work describes several aspects of the interaction between the fields of natural products and medicinal chemistry, from isolation and characterization of bioactive molecules to semi-synthetic analogs preparation. A new phase-trafficking approach for acidic, basic, and neutral compounds separation from organic plant extracts was developed, validated and successfully applied to crude plant extracts. This new method could be applied to natural extracts of diverse origin in order to generate better quality samples for initial bioassays. Furthermore, this new catch-and-release methodology allowed the isolation and identification of three compounds new to the literature from the extensively studied ginger rhizomes. Using a more traditional bioassay guided fractionation, we have identified six small-molecules from Rollinia emarginata that modulate organic anion ...

Phylogenetic relationships within the orchid subtribe Oncidiinae sensu Chase were inferred using maximum likelihood analyses of single and multilocus DNA sequence data sets. Analyses included both nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer DNA and plastid regions (matK exon, trnH-psbA intergenic spacer and two portions of ycf1 exon) for 736 individuals representing approximately 590 species plus seven outgroup taxa. Based on the well resolved and highly supported results, we recognize 61 genera in Oncidiinae. Mimicry of oil-secreting Malpighiaceae and other floral syndromes evolved in parallel across the subtribe, and many clades exhibit extensive variation in pollination-related traits. Because previous classifications heavily emphasized these floral features, many genera recognized were not monophyletic. Our classification based on monophyly will facilitate focused monographs and clarifies the evolution of morphological and biochemical traits of interest within this highly diverse subtribe. ...
Vitamin C helps neutralize free radicals to stop their damage and helps build connective tissues such as collagen [6]. Most other products contain ascorbic acid which is the USP synthesized so-called vitamin C. USP ascorbic acid is made by fermenting corn sugar into sorbitol, then hydrogenating it until it turns into sorbose, then acetone (commonly referred to as nail polish remover) is added to break the molecular bonds which creates ascorbic acid! All the vitamin C in Advanced Joint Complex is from Acerola (it is not a mixture of ascorbic acid with some Acerola thrown in as some do). Acerola is a cherry-like berry that is one of the most naturally concentrated vitamin C Foods known to exist--various cherries have been recommended to help people with arthritis [7]. Vitamin C in Foods such as Acerola exists in at least two forms unlike USP ascorbic acid which does not contain both forms [6]! Acerola is also less acidic than USP ascorbic acid (some feel that increased acidity tends to hurt, ...

Vitamin C: Needed for the absorption of vitamin A and E. Its deficiency causes a weakness in the capillaries. In addition to its antioxidant, this vitamin is also important for the proper absorption of iron, calcium or other amino acids. Similarly supports the healing of wounds. Its deficiency causes a general weakness in the body, manifested in symptoms such as brittle hair, bleeding gums, wounds that will not heal, loss of appetite. Among the main rich foods in this vitamin we have the peppers, being one of the plants of the world that has more amount, after the acerola (Malpighia glabra L) or of the Dog rose (Rosa canina). Also the citruses are very rich (oranges, lemons, grapefruits, etc.).. ...
Pollination in the pecan orchard is critical to both the yield and quality of nuts. Pecan trees are cross-pollinated (allogamous) and although self-pollination is possible, the result is largely unsuccessful. Pecan trees are wind-pollinated; therefore, pollinators (i.e., bees) are not required to complete pollination. Cross-pollinated pecans are usually larger and higher quality than self-pollinated pecans. Self-pollination can reduce nut quality and greatly reduce crop yield by as much as 75 percent.. Pecan trees are monoecious, which means both the male and female flowers are on the same tree. Female flowers (pistillate) are located at the end of the current season growth, and the male flowers (catkin) are located at the end of last seasons growth. Catkins are easy to spot as they dangle from the tree during the early spring. A single catkin can produce as many as 2.64 million pollen grains. Only one pollen grain is required to produce one pecan. One catkin can produce enough pollen to ...
The antioxidant activity, ascorbic acid and phenolic content were studied in 10 exotic fruits from Brazil: abiu, acerola, wax jambu, cashew, mamey sapote, carambola or star fruit, Surinam cherry, longan, sapodilla and jaboticaba. The ascorbic acid was determined by 2,6-dichloroindophenol titrimetic methods and total phenols were measured colorimetrically using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. The antioxidant activity was investigated with three different methods: hypochlorous acid scavenging activity, 2,2-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical cation decolorization assay, and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging method. The highest content of vitamin C (1,525.00 mg/100 g pulp) occurred in acerola. The total phenol content was higher in abiu, acerola, Surinam cherry and sapodilla. In relation to antioxidant activity, acerola has showed the great values in all three different methods tested. It was found that the fruits have a significant antioxidant effect when tested by ...

Growers can increase their crop yield by simply utilizing BVTs system for pollination. For example, for every seven female plants, one male plant is required for cross pollination in a commercial field. But by dedicating 100% of a field to growing female plants, a growers entire field is now producing yield.. ...
Nutritious summer vegetable, originating from the Americas. Very heavy feeder. Requires good soaking in dry weather. To save seeds, plant each variety at least 2 kilometres apart or at least at one month intervals to prevent cross pollination. Keeping varieties pure and saving seed is now very important. Plant in blocks as plants need to be close for wind pollination. If seed is left on the surface each night until germination the rodents may not feel the need to dig up seeds. To eat, harvest when young. Sow after frost. (We cannot send corn to W.A. or Tasmania, check your local Eden Seeds outlets for Sweet Corn). 2-4 seeds per gram ...

Cametá, a historical little Amazonian town on the shores of the river Tocantins, is the birthplace of the scorching music known as Siriá, a cross pollination between the music of the inhabitants of the quilombos, a Brazilian hinterland settlement founded by escaped slaves of African origins, and the indigenous people of the Amazon rainforest. It is a breathing, pulsing, emphatic beat, and the modernised version of this local music, created by Mestre Cupijó, has been igniting street parties and traditional festivals across the state of Pará in Northern Brazil for decades. And at last in 2014, the combustible sound of Siria´ will be celebrated internationally as the feverish, tropical sound of the summer! Foretelling his talent to flow between cultures, Cupijó was named after a local river when he was born in 1936, into a family of musicians. His father, Mestre (Master) Vicente Castro, was also known as Mestre Sicudera, the musical director of Centennial Euterpe, one of Brazil´s oldest ...
Garage inventors themselves are not an organized community but synthetic biology may offer biohackers a new toolkit for the longstanding and common human drive to manipulate nature. Unnatural combinations of living matter are acheivable in many ways. Simple carpentry, i.e. grafting [5], of tree branches to heterologous trunks has allowed a backyard pear tree to grow two kinds of apples and a branch filled with quince [[6]). More sophisticated methods are needed if the goal is to grow hybrids, for example a pear tree with apple-flavored, quince-shaped fruits. Such hybrid traits require methodical cross pollination, the method successfully used by Gregor Mendel to understand the laws of inheritance [7]. Alternatively, recombinant DNA technology can be used, generating products like the Flavr Savr tomato [8]. The possibilities for genetic programs expand still further with synthetic biology. Fruit-flavored bacteria or yeast could be made. Indeed, a student-led synthetic biology team at MIT has ...
There is a company in the Okanagan valley of BC ** Okanagan Specialty Fruits ** that has reached the Federal Government of Canada to pass a non-browning apple. They will not be using hybrid cross pollination to come up with one type of non-browning apple. The science behind this GM apple is a technology done by the browning gene being silenced by inserting a new genetic sequence from 3 different species of apple cells with apple DNA that has had a plant virus and 2 bacteria genes inserted - otherwise known as genetic modification. And the misconception is that 1 or two types of non-browning apples will soon be available in your supermarket for you to choose (nestled between the apples that do brown). THIS IS NOT THE CASE because any type of apple could be grown with the technology and North America doesnt label GMO food! The term non-browning is a technology that if planted, will effect any type of apple (Gala, Ambrosia, Granny Smith, etc.) grown. And the problem wont be that farmers are ...
Nutritious summer vegetable, originating from the Americas. Whilst open pollinated sweet corn is recorded as having significantly higher mineral and protein content (see ECO FARM page 38 - Charles Walters) and are tasty : they are not as sweet as the sickly sweet hybrid supermarket varieties of today. Very heavy feeder. Requires good soaking in dry weather. Grow as Maize and harvest as soon as silks turn brown. To save seeds, plant each variety at least 2 kilometres apart or at least at one month intervals to prevent cross pollination. Keeping varieties pure and saving seed is now very important. Sow after frost. (We cannot send to W.A. or Tasmania, check your local Eden Seeds outlets for Sweet Corn).. 4-7 seeds per gram ...
Our food has been modified over the years, through the hybridization and cross pollination of crops. So if Dan Barber, the famed chef, environmentalist and proponent of the farm to table movement, uses various techniques to blend different types of seeds to improve the qualtiy and flavor of the plants at Blue Hill Farms at Stone Barns,…
Not one part of this article demonstrates how protesting GM field trials is pro-science. You seem to have gone out of your way to show otherwise, in fact, by the choice of references to support some of your claims:. But wheat is largely self-pollinating, the defenders of the Rothamsted experiment tell us, and that should be good enough. Dont bother your pretty little heads about that word largely. But the science is against them - including this wheat-specific research.. You seem to have misread or misunderstood the press release you cite. I assume the science that you believe is against the Rothamsted defenders is their claim that up to 70% of the samples they tested showed signs of cross pollination. First off, this is press release and not a peer-reviewed paper so its hard to know what that evidence is but regardless that isnt the important number. The important number is the one next to it where it states that 95% of those samples had small cross-contamination rates of under 0.5% ...
