What is malocclusion?Malocclusion means having crooked teeth or a poor bite. Bite refers to the way the upper and lower teeth line up. In a normal bite, the upper teeth sit slightly forward of the lower teeth. Very few people have a perfect bite. Most of the time, malocclusion is a cosmetic problem, which means that people dont like the way their teeth look. But it can also have a serious impact on self-esteem. Plus, crooked teeth can be hard to take care of, which may lead to tooth decay or tooth loss. When malocclusion is severe, it can even cause problems with eating or speaking.Orthodontic treatment can correct the way teeth and jaws line up, and that may help a person feel better about his or her appearance. Dentists who are specially trained to correct malocclusion are called orthodontists. They use a variety of tools and techniques to move teeth, and sometimes the jaw, into the right position. What causes malocclusion?Malocclusion is usually caused by problems with the shape or
Background: Traditional methods of measuring oral health mainly use clinical dental indices. In recent years, the use of subjective assessments to gain information about the impact of oral disorders on Oral-Health Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) has been advocated. By supplementing the clinical assessments with subjective assessments, a comprehensive account of the oral health of populations can be given. Studies on the OHRQoL of children in Kenya are so far largely unexplored. Objective: This study aimed at assessing the effect of dental caries and malocclusion on the OHRQoL of 12-14 year-old children residing in Viwandani slum. Study design: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study. Subjects and methods: A total of four hundred and fifty two children aged 12-14 years attending public and private primary schools in Viwandani slum, Nairobi participated in the study. Before going to bed, Caitlyn Clarke took a half-tab of Lucid. She stretched out on the bed wearing an insubstantial nightdress. Her full breasts strained against the material, making a pleasant friction on her nipples. She dimmed the lights with a flicking gesture. Another one commanded the screen on one wall to transform from mirror to reception. She arranged the pillow behind her medium-length glossy brown hair. She scrolled her finger in the air to choose a channel. Pleasant music and soft colors pulsed. As the abstractions played upon the screen, she noticed one of the ads playing in a bottom bar.. "DisHarmony. The place you go to when no place else will serve. DisHarmony. Choose your enemy. DisHarmony. Because its a fight.". Intrigued, Caitlyn sat up a bit, and gestured to open the ad. It splashed on the screen, showing a lavish estate, with old world architecture. The grounds were perfectly manicured. The POV shifted to the front entrance and followed into an open door. The narration, ...

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship of orthodontic malocclusion with periodontal status, dental caries, and sociodemographic status. Our study population consisted of a sample of 836 school children (384 male and 452 female, aged 11–14 years). Four experienced orthodontists and two experienced periodontists performed the clinical examinations. The Treatment Priority Index (TPI), Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN), decayed, missing, filled teeth (DMFT) scores, and a questionnaire that surveyed socio-demographic status of students were used. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients were used to measure the association between variables. TPI scores showed that 36.4% of the students had normal occlusion, while 41.2% had slight, 15.7% had definite, 4% had severe, and 2.7% had very severe malocclusion. TPI values did not show any significant differences between pupils in different age, gender, socioeconomic status groups, and CPITN

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the treatment changes and post-treatment stability in dental arch dimensions in unilateral crossbite patients treated by SME while comparing the Haas, Hyrax, and Quad Helix appliances. Serial dental casts of 110 patients were evaluated at 3 time points: pre-expansion (T1), post-expansion (T2), and approximately 4 years later, before fixed appliance therapy (T3). All measurements were compared with published growth norms. Treatment by SME resulted in similarly favorable amounts of expansion by all three expanders in all measurements for both arches. Maxillary intercanine and intermolar width increased by 4.5 mm and 3.5 mm, respectively, from T1 to T3. Maxillary arch circumference also increased by 1 mm. Mandibular width did not change. At 4 years post-expansion, 97% of intercanine expansion and 80% of intermolar expansion was maintained ...
is teeth that have too much or too little room in the jaw. If children have a small jaw, their teeth may grow into a space that is too small. As a result, teeth may grow or drift out of place.. The greatest energy within you which creates disharmony within your being, reality and relationships is fear. When we recognise that fear is only a reaction of being misaligned with our inner power and truth, we realise that it has little power. When we connect into our inner love, power and wisdom, fear dissolves as does disharmony. And yet disharmony is the result of our fear and can take on many forms, even an energy of its own developing in our reality. We can recognise that disharmony in relationships, with self and the world is caused by existing and expressing from a space of fear, projecting fear and all its other manifestation into the world. Fear within our beings means that disharmony is present within our mind, emotions and energy bodies, our inner world reflects into our outer world. This is a reason why chaos, anger, pain and suffering manifests within the world of the Earth, causing so many people to abuse others mentally, physically and emotionally. Often people fear connecting ...
This basic-level course discusses the etiology of malocclusions in the developing dentition, including oral and nonnutritive habits, and discusses the management of these malocclusions.
There are several different kinds of malocclusions. One common type of malocclusion is the underbite. In an underbite, the lower jaw is extended out further than normal, causing them to be in front of the upper teeth. The opposite of an underbite is an overbite, another common type of malocclusion. An overbite is when the upper front teeth are extended out over the lower teeth, which can sometimes make it so that the lower teeth bite into the roof of the mouth. Other common malocclusions include excess spacing and crowding, crossbites, upper front teeth protrusion, open bite, and more.. How each type of malocclusion is treated depends on the individual patient. In most cases, the earlier our Fountain Valley pediatric dentist begins treatment the better, so that we can ensure smoother tooth and jaw development for your child as they grow older. Some common treatments include: braces, retainers, tooth extractions, and more. Again, the treatment will depend on your childs individual situation and ...

Kelly Churko left a hint in the liner notes. Between the recording dates and the hardware sponsors he simply writes: „refer: paul virillio: the aesthetics of disappearance" and „greg egan: schilds ladder". Well, I have to admit I am not familiar with either of these works but it seems they inspired the track titles such as „luminous emissions" or „productive disharmony". I guess it is to much to call this tape a concept album but yet, it is a compilation of composed works that as a whole can be seen as a composition in itself. By stating twisted stuff like that I simply mean: You put the tape on and the sonic scapes embrace you from the first second on. The single tracks are standing for themselves while being carefully weaved into the whole stream of sound: Between them there are no fractions. As far as the quality of the sounds is concerned it is rich in texture. It almost seems at some points more like a material object: The cracks and glitches then appear somehow physically within ...

Aim: To determine the malocclusion complexity and orthodontic treatment need in urban Iranian schoolchildren using the Index of Complexity, Outcome, and Need (ICON) and the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) and to also assess the relationship between these indices. Methods: The study sample comprised 502 individuals (253 girls and 249 boys, 11 to 14 years of age), of whom one girl and five boys already had an orthodontic appliance at the time of the survey. In those individuals not wearing orthodontic appliances (n = 496), the definitive treatment need (ICON > 43) and compartments of the ICON were defined and compared between sexes. The Aesthetic Component and Dental Health Component (DHC) of the IOTN were also recorded. Scatter plots and Spearman rank correlation coefficients were used to explore the relationships between the ICON and DHC and the Aesthetic Component (AC) of the IOTN. Results: According to ICON, DHC (IOTN), and Aesthetic Component (IOTN), 46.6%, 36.1%, and 17.9%, ...
The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of abrasion in posterior teeth of subjects with unilateral posterior crossbite in the deciduous dentition. A group of 54 untreated subjects in deciduous dentition (test group, TG) was selected from a parent sample of 1500 patients from the files of the Department of Orthodontics of the University of Florence. A sample of 20 subjects with normal occlusion in the deciduous dentition was selected as the control group (CG). As experimental units in TG, 54 crossbite sides (CB, consisting of 33 right and 21 left crossbite sides) and 54 noncrossbite sides (NCB) were used. In CG, one randomly chosen single side for each subject (NCBC) was used for comparisons. The findings of the present study indicated that subjects with unilateral crossbite in the deciduous dentition showed a significantly smaller degree of dental abrasion in the crossbite side when compared with both the opposite side and control group sides. The lack of abrasion in crossbite sides was ...
The incidence of Class III malocclusions ranges from 0.8-12% [1-3]. The etiology of Class III malocclusions can be categorized as either genetic or environmental in origin [3]. The craniofacial characteristics of the Class III malocclusion may be attributed to both a positional and a dimensional disharmony of numerous components of the craniofacial skeleton involving the cranial base, the maxilla, and/or the mandible [4-6]. Ellis and McNamara [7], in their cephalometric sample of 302 adult participants with Class III malocclusions, found that 45.5% of their sample had maxillary retrusion.. Treatment modalities range from dentofacial orthopedic treatments using protraction facemasks [8] and camouflage orthodontic treatments to a combined orthodontic jaw surgery. The extra-oral protraction face mask (PFM) is the most efficient appliance for short- to long-term use [9-11]. Rapid maxillary expansion (RME), in conjunction with PFM, has been claimed to disrupt circummaxillary sutures, which in turn ...
The aim of this longitudinal study was to assess whether correction of unilateral posterior crossbite in the primary dentition results in improvement of facial symmetry and increase of palatal surface area and palatal volume. A group of 60 Caucasian children in the primary dentition, aged 5.3 ± 0.7 years, were collected at baseline. The group consisted of 30 children with a unilateral posterior crossbite with midline deviation of at least 2 mm (CB) and 30 without malocclusion (NCB). The CB group was treated using an acrylic plate expander. The childrens faces and dental casts were scanned using a three-dimensional laser scanning device. Non-parametric tests were used for data analysis to assess differences over the 30 months period of follow-up. The CB children had statistically significantly greater facial asymmetry in the lower part of the face (P , 0.05) and a significantly smaller palatal volume (P , 0.05) than the NCB children at baseline. There were no statistically significant ...
CLASSIFICATION OF SKELETAL AND DENTAL MALOCCLUSION: REVISITED. Introduction: The orthodontic dental classification used datedes for more than 100 years. The skeletal and dental classification of malocclusion has an important role in diagnosis and treatment planning. The aim of this study is to facilitate the grouping of skeletal and dental malrelationships and to build an accurate diagnosis and to suggest treatment planning. Material and method: The main orthodontic classification systems for skeletal and dental relationship were reviewed. Results: The proposed skeletal and dental classification proved detailed accuracy and focus on relating the categories with the suggested treatment planning. The new modification of the skeletal and dental classification explained clearly the occlusal relationship and helped in setting treatment strategies. Conclusions: The present skeletal and dental classification is faster, accurate and easily applicable clinically and dealt with the shortcoming of the ...
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the energy (Qi) in the body circulates through a network of vessels (also called "channels" or "meridians"). The Chong and Ren vessels are particularly important in womans health because fertility and the menstrual cycle depend on the flow of Qi and Blood through these channels. In women whose psoriasis seems to be related to their menstrual cycle, pregnancy or childbirth, there is probably Disharmony in the Ren and Chong Vessels. (This pattern of disharmony is not exclusive to women, but it is much less common and less obvious to diagnose in men).. In this pattern, the psoriasis lesions often appear before pregnancy but disappear during pregnancy only to reappear after giving birth. In some patients, the condition becomes aggravated before the period (or possibly immediately after). The lesions are typically bright or pale red with silvery scales. They are widely distributed over the body. Itching is usually not as severe as in other patterns. ...
An improved orthopedic appliance for correcting a Class II malocclusion comprising an acrylic anterior segment molded to fit the lower mouth and dentition and two acrylic posterior segments molded to fit the upper mouth and dentition of a patient and an expansion screw connecting each posterior segment to the anterior segment for expandible movement between the anterior segment and the posterior segments. A method of correcting a Class II Division 1 malocclusion using an expandable but otherwise conventional orthopedic appliance. The appliance is expanded in stages to maximize the utilization of corrective lower jaw movements which result from the anchoring of the orthopedic appliance in the patients upper mouth.
Objective. To explore how malocclusions affect daily life in adolescents and how adolescents cope with malocclusionrelated distress.. Materials and methods. Twelve strategically selected teenagers, seven girls and five boys aged 13-14 years, participated in this study. Open, tape-recorded in-depth interviews based on Focus Group Discussions (FGD) were performed using a theme guide and analyzed according to the qualitative method of classic grounded theory (GT).. Results. A core category was identified and namedRepeatedly reminded of the malocclusion. Associated to the core category, five categories were generated and labeled Being directed by the medias ideal image, Monitoring othersteeth, Struggling with low selfesteem, Hiding ones teeth and Striving for cure. Low self-esteem appeared to be frequently reinforced through the concerns for the malocclusion and handled via different coping strategies, such as hiding the teeth and striving to receive orthodontic treatment. Treating crooked teeth requires a specialist, usually an orthodontist, although a regular dentist may be able to fix very mild cases. Before commencing orthodontic treatment, a few dental procedures may be necessary such as teeth extraction in the case of crowded teeth and orthographic surgery when the jaw is crooked. Other procedures such as teeth cleaning and whitening, filling, fixing of crowns, root canal treatment and implants may be carried out by a regular dentist.. Orthodontic treatment for crooked teeth is characterized by three stages. These include:. Pre-correction stage: This refers to the stage at which appliances are used to add space in the mouth. These include palatal ex-panders for expanding the palate width, and lingual bars for expanding the lower jaw.. Corrective stage: This is the stage at which braces are used to adjust and straighten teeth to correct malocclusion s. This could take some time depending on the severity of the malocclusion s.. Retention stage: Once treatment ...

The objective of the study was to compare the acceptability of occlusion among orthodontically treated and untreated adolescents in eight Finnish municipal health centres applying different timing of treatment. A random sample of 16- and 18-year olds (n = 2325) living in these municipalities was invited for a clinical examination, and 1109 adolescents participated. Two calibrated orthodontists blindly examined the participants for the acceptability of occlusion with the Occlusal Morphology and Function Index. The history of orthodontic treatment was elicited by questionnaire. The impact of the history and timing of treatment on the acceptability of occlusion was analysed with logistic regression analysis.. The history of orthodontic treatment decreased the odds for acceptability of morphology [odds ratio (OR) = 0.719, 95 per cent confidence limit (CL), P = 0.016] and acceptability of function (OR = 0.724, 95 per cent CL, P = 0.018). The early timing of treatment increased the odds for ...
