β-Endorphin is known to stimulate phospholipase production by Malassezia pachydermatis during canine dermatoses. The role of β-endorphin in Malassezia infection in humans is not well studied. The present study compares the influence of β-endorphin on Malassezia globosa and Malassezia restricta isolated from patients with seborrhoeic dermatitis/dandruff (SD/D) and healthy controls. Malassezia isolates (five each of the two species from patients and healthy controls) were grown on modified Dixons agar with or without 100 nmol/L β-endorphin. Phospholipase activity was quantified based on its ability to hydrolyze L-α-phosphatidylcholine dimyristoyl (phospholipid substrate). Free fatty acid was measured by a colorimetry method. In isolates from patients, the phospholipase activity significantly increased after exposure to β-endorphin (M. globosa, P = .04; M. restricta, P = .001), which did not occur in isolates from healthy controls. Moreover, after β-endorphin exposure the patient isolates ...
Malassezia pachydermatis is a zoophilic yeast in the division Basidiomycota. It was first isolated in 1925 by Fred Weidman, and has been named pachydermatis Greek for "thick-skin" after the original sample taken from an Indian rhinoceros (Rhinocerosus unicornis) with severe exfoliative dermatis. Within the genus Malassezia, M. pachydermatis is most closely related to the species M. furfur. A commensal fungus, it can be found within the microflora of healthy mammals such as humans, cats and dogs, However, it is capable of acting as an opportunistic pathogen under special circumstances and has been seen to cause skin and ear infections, most often occurring in canines. Malassezia pachydermatis is a bottle-shaped, non-lipid dependent lipophilic yeast in the genus Malassezia. Colonies are cream or yellowish in colour, smooth to wrinkled and convex with a margin possessing a slightly lobed appearance. Cells are ovoidal in shape and range in size from 3.0-6.5 x 2.5 μm. Colonies grow via unipolar ...
The majority of species within the genus Malassezia are lipophilic yeasts that colonize the skin of warm-blooded animals. Two species, Malassezia globosa and Malassezia restricta, are implicated in the causation of seborrheic dermatitis/dandruff (SD/D). During our survey of SD/D cases, we isolated several species of Malassezia and noticed vast variations within a few lipid-dependent species. Variations observed in the phenotypic characteristics (colony morphology, absence of catalase activity, growth at 37°C, and precipitation surrounding wells containing Tween 20 or Cremophor EL) suggested the possible presence of a novel species. Sequence divergence observed in the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, the D1/D2 domain, and the intergenic spacer 1 (IGS1) region of rDNA and the TEF1 gene, PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of the ITS2 region, and fluorescent amplified fragment length polymorphism analysis support the existence of a novel species. Based on ...
Introduction. Malassezia pachydermatis (Pityrosporum pachydermatis, P. canis) is a lipophilic, non-mycelial yeast with characteristic thick-walled elongated oval shape and unipolar budding. It is a commensal organism in the dog, residing on or in the skin, ear canals, anal sacs, vagina and rectum. It is considered as a secondary pathogen in canine otitis externa. Malassezia pachydermatis was recently reported as an opportunistic nosocomial pathogen in a human intensive care nursery. Pityrosporum ovale (a related organism that colonizes humans) is considered to be both a commensal and an opportunistic pathogen. Pathogenesis. Malassezia pachydermatis was controversially implicated by Mason as a cause of localized or generalized pruritic and inflammatory skin disease in dogs (1987). Mason hypothesized: 1. Alterations in host defense mechanisms and skin surface microclimate allow the organism to become a pathogen--a facultative pathogen?. 2. Excessive sebum production, moisture accumulation and ...

Malassezia spp. are lipophilic fungi, which have been recognised for over a century as members of the normal human cutaneous flora, and also as agents of certain skin diseases. In addition, since the 1980s, they have been reported as causing opportunistic systemic infections. These yeasts have frequently been found on a diverse range of other warm-blooded animals, and their wider distribution in nature is now being explored using molecular techniques. The focus of the present study was the species no lipid-dependent Malassezia pachydermatis, and its characterization through the enzymatic profile by the Api-Zym® system. Then 30 isolated samples of dogs had been used, with and without clinical signals, identified by the technique of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The samples were cultivated into Dixons modified medium, incubated at 37°C during 48 hours, for posterior quantification through spectrophotometry. An inocula of 65 μl was placed in each microwell of the commercial kit of enzymatic ...

Answers from experts on malassezia furfur. First: Ring worm in the scalp which causes loss of hai in that area more common in children but can happen in adults, needs to be treated with oral antifungal drug like grsiofulvin or Lamisil (terbinafine) and as the infection clears completely the hair will grow back. Niozoral shampoo is also used along with oral med which will prevent the growth of fungi as well as kill the pathogen. But shampoo alone will not work.

Replied on 04/19/2011 There are no over-the-counter anti-fungal treatments that are recommended for dogs with malassezia dermatitis. Anti-fungal treatments can be very toxic if ingested, so it is important to only get products recommended to you by your veterinarian and only use them in the recommended manner. While it is not a treatment for the dermatitis, you may consider changing your dogs diet. Most dogs that develop dermatitis from yeast (malassezia is a species of yeast) have an underlying skin imbalance. Most often this is caused by allergies, and food allergies are commonly a component of this. If you wish to change your dogs diet, you should select a limited ingredient diet that has one protein source and one carbohydrate. These should ideally be foods your dog has never had before such as duck and potato. It is less important that your dog has never had the starch before and very important you select a food with a protein your dog has never had before. Erika, DVM ...

Tinea versicolor is a condition characterized by a skin eruption on the trunk and proximal extremities. The majority of tinea versicolor is caused by the fungus Malassezia globosa, although Malassezia furfur is responsible for a small number of cases. These yeasts are normally found on the human skin and become troublesome only under certain circumstances, such as a warm and humid environment, although the exact conditions that cause initiation of the disease process are poorly understood. The condition pityriasis versicolor was first identified in 1846. Versicolor comes from the Latin, from versāre to turn + color. It is also commonly referred to as Peter Elams disease in many parts of South Asia. The symptoms of this condition include: Occasional fine scaling of the skin producing a very superficial ash-like scale Pale, dark tan, or pink in color, with a reddish undertone that can darken when the patient is overheated, such as in a hot shower or during/after exercise. Tanning typically makes ...

Tinea versicolor, also called pityriasis versicolor, is a common skin condition which is caused by a superficial cutaneous infection with the fungal agent Malassezia furfur (previously Pityrosporum versicolor or Pityrosporum orbiculare). The infection occurs worldwide, with prevalences from 0.5% in temperate climates up to 18% in humid tropical climates reported in the literature (Hellgren, Ponnighaus). Tinea versicolor predominately affects adolescents and adults, but infection as early as in infancy has been described. The typical clinical finding consists of multiple, oval lesions with fine scaling, which are predominately distributed over the upper areas of the trunk, the upper arms and the neck. Facial involvement is particularly common in children. The lesions may be hypopigmented or hyperpigmented and are frequently associated with pruritus. The areas typically fail to tan during the summer and appear darker than the surrounding unaffected skin in the winter months when they appear yellow ...

Dandruff is a common chronic scalp condition; it is usually accompanied by itching and it causes the skin on your scalp to flake. It can be embarrassing but it is not life threatening nor will it cause you to lose your hair. Problem with dandruff is that it is difficult to treat and can linger for a while on the scalp if it the underlying cause is not addressed properly.. Causes of Dandruff. There are several things that can cause dandruff; dermatologists have not yet come up with any specific underlying problem that can cause this condition.. 1. Malassezia (yeast like fungus).. Malassezia can be found on the scalps of healthy adults and it usually does not cause any problems. However, if it feeds on the oils secreted by your hair follicles it grows out of control. When this happens, the skin on your scalp gets irritated and this in turn will cause more skin cells to grow. The extra skin cells then die and fall off , when it clumps with the oil from your hair and scalp, it appears white, flaky ...
A carbohydrate, mannose-binding lectin or MBL, carried on the surface of a species of acne-causing fungi, Malassezia, has been shown to cause carcinogenesis and an increase in Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma (PDA); the fungus levels increase significantly in the pancreas prior to the disease.. Furthermore, when researchers(1) ablated the mycobiome (the fungal or yeast microbiome) of the pancreas, slow to moderate cancers stopped progressing. But when they introduced Malassezia strains - but not Candida Saccharomyces or Aspergillus strains - the cancer accelerated. Malassezia is a species of fungi (funghi) or yeast naturally found on the skin of most animals and humans. It is thought to lie behind fungal acne.. At CANCERactive, we have covered several studies showing that bacteria from the mouth associated with gum disease were linked to Pancreatic Cancer, and that a sudden rush of bacteria from the gut to the pancreas caused a 1000-fold increase in bacteria in the pancreatic microbiome and ...

Ustilaginomycotina (Basidiomycota, Fungi) has been reclassified recently based on multiple gene sequence analyses. However, the phylogenetic placement of two yeast-like genera Malassezia and Moniliella in the subphylum remains unclear. Phylogenetic analyses using different algorithms based on the sequences of six genes, including the small subunit (18S) ribosomal DNA (rDNA), the large subunit (26S) rDNA D1/D2 domains, the internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS 1 and 2) including 5.8S rDNA, the two subunits of RNA polymerase II (RPB1 and RPB2) and the translation elongation factor 1-α (EF1-α), were performed to address their phylogenetic positions. Our analyses indicated that Malassezia and Moniliella represented two deeply rooted lineages within Ustilaginomycotina and have a sister relationship to both Ustilaginomycetes and Exobasidiomycetes. Those clades are described here as new classes, namely Moniliellomycetes with order Moniliellales, family Moniliellaceae, and genus Moniliella; and ...

Therapy for Chronic Canine Otitis Treatment errors, over and under treatment, or inappropriate use of antimicrobial medication can result in a chronically diseased ear. The key to successful management of chronic canine otitis is early intervention, identifying a cause of the condition, and employing specific and appropriate therapy.. Ears with highly proliferative, chronic disease require deep cleaning and flushing before any topical therapy can be expected to help resolve the condition. Should a myringotomy be performed, the contents of the middle ear can be aspirated as soon as rupture occurs, and the middle ear can be flushed with normal saline or Tris-EDTA using a feline, open-tipped urinary catheter. "Just before the animal wakes, Tris-EDTA and a topical antimicrobial solution should be instilled and a parenteral prednisolone administered.". Malassezia pachydermatis, a yeast that is commonly found on the skin of dogs, generally does not cause any problems, reports Pet Education.
infections with bacteria or yeast. If we just treat the infection, we are not getting to the root of the problem. We need to treat the allergies too. Otodectes cynotis or dog ear mite is also major cause of ear infection but most commonly observed to occur on cats and rare for dogs. Some dogs are hypersensitive (Hypersensitivity disorders or Keratinization disorders) to the mites, however, and the resultant itching can be intense. These dogs may scratch so much they severely traumatize the ear. Numerous types of bacteria and the yeast, Malassezia pachydermatis, cause ear infections. The normal, healthy ear has a good defense against these organisms, but if the ear environment changes due to allergies, hormone abnormalities, or moisture, the bacteria and yeast can greatly multiply and break down these defenses. Hormonal abnormalities like deficiencies or excesses of various hormones can result in skin and ear problems. Thyroid hormone, glucocorticoids produced by the adrenal gland, and sex ...

You seem to have some for your information confused. Im going to try and help you however be warned Im terrible at explaining, also id love to tell you about what has helped me in my journey with acne. The article does not state that you need to keep you pH around 1-4, the article states that your SKIN loves a pH of around 4. A pH of 1-3 is much too acidic and would probably burn your skin. A pH of 4 is ideal because its the pH that the good bacteria on your skin loves and will help to get rid of the bad bacteria or funguss etc. A lot of face washes companies on the market know this however there still are face washes on the market that have a higher ph. On amazon I found that one of best-selling dandruff shamposs is Nizoral. It is an example of a shampoo that contains ketoconazole, which attacks the fungus Malassezia with a broad-spectrum antifungal ingredient such as ketoconazole1,2. Do not worry, this antifungal is well tolerated on our scalps3 and works well as a prophylaxis if you use it once per week4.. My experience with Nizoral was that it worked after about 1 week / three washes. The 60ml bottle is really small so I first shampooed my hair with a normal cheap shampoo to get it clean.
