I was unable to find an ophthalmologist on call at any of our states trauma centers: Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, or Maine Medical Center in Portland. I also could not find one available at MaineGeneral in Augusta. As a result, the child had to be taken four hours by ambulance to Massachusetts Eye and Ear in Boston.. Maine Medical Center touts itself as a Level One trauma center, a prestigious designation applied for and conferred by the American College of Surgeons. Having worked at MMC, and having sent many patients there, I have had excellent experience as a provider in helping trauma patients access care at that institution. Their doctors and nurses are world class.. A Level One trauma center is supposed to have an ophthalmologist available 24/7, as outlined in the American College of Surgeons Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient guidelines. Yet this is not the case, and it is hurting patients from our state.. Ironically, ...

Additionally, MMC has numerous outpatient clinics and diverse ambulatory care experiences that I knew would provide me with a well-rounded education and the opportunity to strengthen my skills in patient care ...
Distribution of arsenic (As) and its compound and related toxicology are serious concerns nowadays. Gold mining activity is one of the anthropogenic sources of environmental contamination regarding As and other heavy metals. In Mongolia, the most productive gold mining sites are placed in the Kharaa river basin. A hundred water samples were collected from river, spring and deep wells in this river basin. Along with total As and its species-As(III) and As(V), examination of concentration levels of other key parameters, 21 heavy metals with pH, total hardness, electric conductivity, anion and cations, was also carried out. In respect to the permissible limit formulated by the Mongolian National Drinking water quality standard (MNS 0900:2005, As10 µg/l), the present study showed that most of samples were found no contamination. In Kharaa river basin, an average concentration of total As in surface water was 4.04 µg/l with wide range in 0.07−30.30 µg/l whereas it was 2.24 µg/l in groundwater. ...
While the severity of the 1998 annual JOD epizootic was low compared with those of previous years, it impacted at least three separate culture sites on Maines Damariscotta River. Bacteriological analysis of JOD-affected animals from each of these epizootics revealed the presence of CFU morphologically indistinguishable from those of the CVSP marine α-proteobacterium that was found to be associated with the 1997 epizootic (7). The 16S rRNA genes from isolates in the present study were amplified, and the sequence was determined to be identical to that of the previously described CVSP strains. CVSP-type CFU were not isolated from nonaffected animals raised at the JOD enzootic site or in cohorts raised at a JOD-free site. Thus, these results demonstrate that the presence of CVSP bacteria is a reliable indicator of JOD and constitutes strong correlative evidence for the role of these marine α-proteobacteria in JOD mortality.. An attempt to reproduce JOD signs and mortalities in ...

The Maine DOE, in collaboration with the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, is encouraging public schools to register for the 2015 Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey (MIYHS).. MIYHS is a tool that collects self-reported student behavior data and can be used by schools to take a comprehensive look at the risk behaviors and protective factors of the youth in their communities alongside state and national level data. This valuable data source can additionally be used by districts to: direct policy; support the creation of positive school environment changes; demonstrate the correlation between academic performance and both health risk behaviors and school climate issues; highlight successes and challenges and/or support proposed policy or programming changes to school board or community presentations; and apply for grant funds.. So, lets get this straight. I just received a press release from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife seeking volunteers to help clean up trash, etc. on land owned by private individuals to secure access to private land for recreational use and show your appreciation for Maines landowners. Maybe licensed hunters and fishermen should seriously consider whether helping out the landowner who just screwed them over is in everyones best interest.. The Maine Legislature recently passed a bill, which unjustly targets licensed hunters and fishermen for extra punishment if caught harming signs and other private property. If you create the same damage and are not a licensed hunter or fishermen, there is no extra penalty for said crime.. One can understand the frustration of a landowner who is tired of replacing damaged signs or other property, but to specifically target one group is unlawful and until attention is brought to this travesty passed by the Maine Legislature, why should ...

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Hours after a Halloween party, smoking materials that were improperly disposed of caused a fire that killed six people in a Portland apartment - Maines worst fire in 40 years, officials said Wednesday. The fire was an accident that started on the porch before spreading into the home, said Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety. David Bragdon, the father of one of the victims, said investigators told him they believe the fire

Animal activists are suing the state to derail trapping in Maine. The suit is the latest in a spate of court cases that could lead to the end of trapping, hunting and fishing wherever endangered species exist.. On Oct. 12, the Animal Protection Institute (API) filed a federal lawsuit against the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IFW). The case, which is nearly identical to an existing suit in Minnesota, centers around Canada lynx, bald eagles and gray wolves. The API claims that because these federally protected species could be caught in a trap, trapping should be prohibited. There is no data proving that there is a problem.. The antis are not filing these lawsuits to protect the integrity of threatened and endangered species, but rather to advance their own political agenda, said Rob Sexton, U.S. Sportsmens Alliance Foundation (USSAF) vice president for government affairs. They want to establish a legal precedent that can be used to stop all hunting and even fishing ...
A train ride to Massachusetts to buy drugs and an attentive conductor have landed a former Westport Island heroin dealer in prison for six years.. Roger R. Gingras Jr., 39, formerly of 6 Ferry Road, received an upfront sentence of just three months in jail at the time of his January conviction for trafficking heroin in Lincoln County. After his Dec. 4 sentencing on a new charge of importing drugs and a probation violation, he is now serving a six-year sentence at the Maine State Prison in Warren.. On Oct. 21, 2015, the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency executed a search warrant at Gingras home on Westport Island based on information that Gingras was selling large amounts of heroin, according to an affidavit by an MDEA agent.. Agents seized 33 grams of heroin with a street value of $6,600, a half-pound of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and a shotgun, according to an Oct. 22, 2015 press release from Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.. Gingras admitted that he had been ...

78 percent of parents believe they would know if their teen used alcohol but only 47 percent of the teens agreed.. Parents are becoming more aware about the dangers of underage drinking and learning about what it takes to keep their teens safe. said Guy Cousins, SAMHS Director. We still have work to do to close the gap between what parents think and what teens are saying in the Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey (MIYHS).. The data recently reported in the 2013 MIYHS by the Maine Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services is based on anonymous responses from 63,000 public school students in grade 5 through 12.. Parents are willing to face the evidence about teen drinking, said Cousins, but they may not know what to do to prevent teen alcohol use.. According to SAMHS, guidelines for parents include:. • Talking to your child about the dangers of underage drinking, even before they become a teen ...
Under pressure from the chemical industry, the Environmental Protection Agency has dismissed an outspoken scientist who chaired a federal panel responsible for helping the agency determine the dangers of a flame retardant widely used in electronic equipment.. Toxicologist Deborah Rice was appointed chair of an EPA scientific panel reviewing the chemical a year ago. Federal records show she was removed from the panel in August after the American Chemistry Council, the lobbying group for chemical manufacturers, complained to a top-ranking EPA official that she was biased.. The chemical, a brominated compound known as deca, is used in high volumes worldwide, largely in the plastic housings of television sets.. Rice, an award-winning former EPA scientist who now works at the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, has studied low doses of deca and reported neurological effects in lab animals. Last February, around the time the EPA panel was convened, Rice testified before the Maine ...
So, let me get this straight! According to John Holyokes report in the Bangor Daily News, the excuses the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) give for increasing the allotment of Any-Deer Permits (ADP) to over 66,000 is because of 10 consecutive years of mild winters. I can say they were mild for me because I was in Florida, but record breaking snowfall evidently doesnt account for any part of the Winter Severity Index.. We hear also that most of those ADPs are being handed out in Wildlife Management Districts (WMD) in Central and Southern Maine where populations of deer are the highest, and yet ADPs are being issued in zones where there havent been any for a few years and where record deep snowfalls occurred.. And if that isnt enough to start your blood boiling just a tad, read what Lee Kantar, acting deer biologist(?) said (because the former deer biologist quit and moved on): Kantar said that as the DIF&W continues to work on its next generation of long-range ...

We have developed a PCR-assay for the diagnosis of juvenile oyster disease (JOD) based on the detection of Roseovarius crassostreae directly from affected oysters. Species-specific primers are used to amplify the 16S-23S rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of R. crassostreae, and confirmation of product identity is accomplished by restriction enzyme analysis. No false positives were obtained with either closely related bacterial species or from other DNAs present in oyster samples. The assay has the potential to detect as few as 10 cells of R. crassostreae per oyster when samples are taken from the inner valve surfaces of the animal. Inclusion of material from soft body surfaces is not necessary, and may reduce sensitivity approximately 10-fold. In a JOD-affected population, a positive PCR result was obtained from all oysters from which these bacteria were subsequently cultured. The assay also detected the presence of R. crassostreae in 2 oysters from which no...

During April 2010-March 2013, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services investigated multiple cases of ascariasis that had been reported by health-care providers, veterinarians, and patients. All of the cases were in persons who had lived or worked on Maine farms and had frequent exposure to pigs. Ascariasis, a parasitic roundworm infection caused by Ascaris species, is the most common human intestinal worm infection globally.* However, because ascariasis is not a reportable disease, limited data exist regarding the incidence of this infection in the United States (1), and the number of annual cases in Maine is unknown. After investigation, 14 persons on seven farms in Maine were identified with Ascaris infection. To better assess the extent of the ascariasis problem, state health officials conducted field investigations at four of the seven farms with reported cases and collected worms from humans and pigs and from pooled pig feces. Human worm and pig worm specimens were sent to CDC for ...

The employment protections in the Act prohibit Maine employers from refusing to employ or otherwise penalizing any person age 21 or older based on that person consuming marijuana outside… employers… property. Job applicants are also no longer allowed to be tested for marijuana.. Exceptions to these new rules include employers who receive federal funding or are hiring for safety sensitive positions where marijuana is still prohibited.. Under the Act, employers are allowed to ban the use and possession of marijuana in the workplace and given the right to discipline employees who are under the influence of marijuana in the workplace.. However, a drug test alone will not be able to prove that an employee is under the influence, the Maine Department of Labor stated.. Unlike alcohol, where impairment can be confirmed with a blood alcohol test, marijuana does not currently have any sort of impairment test equivalent. Testing for marijuana is currently only able to see if someone has used ...

October 19, 2015 - Its a crisp sunny morning in early October in the Washington County town of Pembroke and Tim Sheehan walks briskly across an empty parking lot to greet me. Hed been expecting good news about clam flats in northwestern Cobscook Bay being reopened, but instead of a parking lot full of diggers delivering clams to Gulf of Maine Inc., the seafood business on Route 1 he co-owns with his wife, Amy, theres just a quiet sunlit absence.. The flats had been closed for almost a week after an historic rainfall on Sept. 30 forced Maines Department of Marine Resources to close the entire coast to shellfish harvesting. Even though he knows the closures are a temporary and necessary precaution - until water quality testing determines theres no longer a risk of runoff pollution contaminating soft shell clams and mussels in the tidal flats - its still hard for Sheehan to accept another blank day on his companys ledgers.. Im a dealer, our business depends on clams, he says.. Hes not ...

ABSTRACT: This study examined the spatial and temporal scales of patches of crab larvae in the coastal waters of the Middle Atlantic Bight near the mouth of Delaware Bay, USA (38.70°N, 75°W). The spatial scale of the patches was characterized by sampling along-shelf and across-shelf transects via series of continuous plankton tows. Autocorrelation of larval densities along each transect revealed that patch diameters ranged from about 0.5 to 2.5 km in both along-shelf and across-shelf dimensions. The ages of 12 different patches were estimated by comparing the proportions of Stage I and Stage II larvae composing each patch. One additional patch was tagged with a satellite-tracked drifter, and changes in the proportions of the 2 stages were observed over a 3 d period. Analysis indicated that the tagged patch had remained cohesive for at least 4 d and possibly as long as 6 d. Potential mechanisms for patch formation and maintenance include synchronous spawning events, associative larval behavior, ...

I never knew how much blood was needed. I would see the blood drive signs along the road or they would have a drive at my place of work years ago. In addition, Id always think…they have enough blood, they dont need mine. Boy was I wrong!. Back in 2003 my dad, Stephen Dickens, was diagnosed with leukemia. He had regular visits for lab work in those five years. In addition, pretty much to that day…five years later my dad was at the Alfond Cancer Center, in Augusta, having chemo treatments. He ended up at MaineGeneral, in Augusta, from there they transported him to Maine Medical Center, in Portland. He was a patient there for a month.. We were with him that whole time. We conducted flume experiments to investigate the nature of knickpoint and bedrock channel longitudinal profile evolution for a channel reach underlain by a vertically bedded substrate of alternating resistance. This research was motivated by the presence, behavior, and apparent persistence of impressive knickpoints formed in steeply dipping or steeply foliated bedrock in Atlantic slope drainages of the Appalachian Mountains. The experiments were carried out in a 10-m-long wooden-box flume filled with a very fine- to medium-grained sand alluvial substrate and a single, 30-cm-wide ridge of vertically oriented, lacustrine silt-clay varves designed to simulate a bedrock channel reach. Numerous control experiments established a stable meandering channel form and transport gradient, from which knickpoints were produced by a single, instantaneous base-level fall at the channel mouth. Knickpoint evolution in the alluvial material downstream of the bedrock reach was dominated by inclination of the ...
