Outside of the potent GABAnergic effects, Magnolia may reduce the secretion of adrenaline from the adrenal glands, antagonize NMDA
Description: Approximately one hundred to two hundred species of Magnolia are found in tropical America and Asia. The genera Mangletia and Michellia are included in the genus Magnolia by some authorities. The saucer magnolia is a hybrid between two Japanese species, Magnolia heptapetala and M. liliflora. It is deciduous in winter and slow growing. Flowers may be up to six inches wide and colors range white to pink and purple. Traditionally, the magnolias were classified as dicotyledons. Some scientists believe that magnolias are descendents of a basal group of flowering plants that preceded the development of monocotyledons and dicots. ...
The genus Magnolia comprises about 80 species from temperate and tropical parts of East Asia and America (before the most recent ice ages Magnolias were also found in Europe). The genus name was given by Carl Linnae, and honours a much respected French botanist, Pierre Magnol. This genus contains both evergreen and deciduous species. Species of this genus are noted for producing the largest individual flowers of any temperate woody plant. Magnolias are well known as garden plants, but some have also been used in medicine (M. officinalis for example), to spice food (M. virginiana or sweet bay) and the wood has had many, many uses. We have 7 species of Magnolia growing at Hørsholm and 5 additional species grow in our Forest Botanic Garden in Charlottenlund. This months plant, Magnolia sieboldii, is another one of my favourite plants, because of the beautiful flowers. The individual flowers of M. sieboldii with the pure white tepals (the sepals and petals combined), reddish stamens (male), and ...

Magnolia macrophylla. Magnolias are among the oldest flowering trees and are very popular for landscaping uses because they have highly fragrant flowers and birds and rodents often like to feed on the trees small, bright-red seeds. Bigleaf magnolia is a medium-sized deciduous tree known for its large leaves and large flowers. It has a relatively fast rate of growth and does not need full sun to survive once established. Like other magnolia trees, it is relatively free of problems but needs monitoring during a period of extended drought to ensure that it receives sufficient water to survive and thrive.. Bigleaf magnolia leaves are 12 to 32 inches long and 7 to 12 inches wide in the wild, but somewhat smaller in landscapes. The leaves are bright green above with a fuzzy, silver-grey underside.. ...
Magnolia is a large genus of about 210[1] flowering plant species in the subfamily Magnolioideae of the family Magnoliaceae. The natural range of Magnolia species is rather scattered. It includes eastern North America, Central America and the West Indies and east and southeast Asia. Some species are found in South America. Today many species of Magnolia and an ever increasing number of hybrids can also be found as ornamental trees in large parts of North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The genus is named after Pierre Magnol, a botanist from Montpellier in France. Magnolia is an ancient genus. Having evolved before bees appeared, the flowers developed to encourage pollination by beetles. As a result, the carpels of Magnolia flowers are tough, to avoid damage by eating and crawling beetles. Fossilised specimens of M. acuminata have been found dating to 20 million years ago, and of plants identifiably belonging to the Magnoliaceae dating back to 95 million years ago. Another primitive ...

San Francisco Botanical Gardens magnolia collection includes 51 species and 33 cultivars, including many prized examples from Asia. This unique and long-standing collection began in 1939 with Eric Walther, who planted the very first magnolia in the Garden and continued to introduce species and cultivars throughout his tenure as the first Garden Director. One of the most famous species he planted was the cup and saucer magnolia or Magnolia campbellii, the first of its kind to bloom in the United States in 1940, attracting huge crowds of excited and curious visitors who stood in long lines to see the magnificent large pink blossoms of this lovely magnolia that still stands in the Garden today. More than a dozen other M. campbellii can now also be found throughout the Garden.. ...

Magnolia Nobile is an abstract of true magnolias - a foray into enchanting florals, much in the same way Iris Nobile demanded your nose attempt to conjure an image of purple irises. Magnolia opens with what I would call the "signature" Acqua di Parma topnote of bergamot and lemon which are distinctly Mediterranean in style. A puff of cedar beckons the nose into a rich floral heart of magnolia, rose, tuberose and jasmine... but there is also a crystalline sharpness which is akin to the Egyptian white musk abundant in Narciso Rodriguez for Her. An adept marriage of floral accords and earthy patchouli and sandalwood makes Magnolia Nobile both modern and whimsical. It is a scent of contrasts in which radiance meets velvety softness. Whilst I wouldnt call it particularly ground-breaking, I would call it a very sophisticated scent of noble intention ...

The star magnolia (Magnolia stellata) looks like a delicate tree but is actually the hardiest magnolia. Gardeners can be easily deceived by the trees appearance in spring, when the leafless branches are covered in star-like, white flowers with narrow petals. Consider adding the star magnolia to your landscape. ...
Many Magnolia species with large-sized leaves seem to be wind-tolerant, but their branches are somewhat brittle. Trees growing in sheltered situations are more prone to damage by freak wind gusts than those growing in open situations, where adaptation to environment brings about the development of shorter and stouter branches and sometimes smaller leaves than usual.. In a part-shaded situation, however, colored flowers of Magnolia are darker and retain their color better. For example, M. × loebneri "Leonard Messel" is at its best when it flowers during a sunless period or in a shaded situation. When grown in the open it loses much of its color when warm sunny weather coincides with its flowering season (). Magnolia grandiflora is also moderately tolerant of shade. It can endure considerable shade in early life but needs more light as it becomes older (). It will invade pine or hardwood stands and is able to reproduce under a closed canopy. It will not reproduce under its own shade. Once ...

You can amend the soil with compost or peat moss. Both are available in bags in the garden center. Dig a planting hole the same depth but twice as wide as the container your magnolia is currently in. Mix compost or peat moss with the soil you took out of the hole and then unpot the magnolia and set it in the hole. Be sure that the plant is sitting at the same soil level as it was in the nursery pot and then backfill around the roots with the amended soil, tamping it down as you go. Water your magnolia after youve planted it to help settle the soil. Then remember to water deeply once a week to help the roots become established. Best wishes with your magnolia ...

It is believed that honokiol acts on GABAA receptors similarly to benzodiazepines and Z-drugs. However, honokiol has been shown to achieve anxiolysis with fewer motor or cognitive side effects than GABAA receptor agonists such as flurazepam and diazepam. It has been shown that honokiol likely has a higher selectivity for different GABAA receptor subtypes and both magnolol and honokiol showed higher efficacy when acting on receptors containing δ subunits.[1] GABAA receptors control ligand-gated Cl− channels that can help increase seizure thresholds through the influx of chloride anions. Honokiol may also affect the synthesis of GABA. In a study where mice received seven daily injections of honokiol, researchers observed a significant increase in hippocampal levels of glutamate decarboxylase (GAD)(67) a precursor to GABA.[24] ...
Magnolias are blooming all over Berkeley. Theres quite an impressive diversity. Here is a black and white photo I took in the afternoon of the Star Magnolia, M. stellata.
Southern magnolia is a large, broad-leafed evergreen tree that can grow 60-90 ft (18-27 m) in height with a trunk up to 2-3 ft (0.6-0.9 m) in diameter. Its trunk is typically straight and erect with spreading branches that form a dense, broadly pyramidal crown. The evergreen leaves are large 5-8 in (13-20 cm) long, leathery and dark glossy green above with rusty, velveteen undersides. Southern magnolia has large, showy white flowers that are 8-12 in (20-30 cm) in diameter. These have a pleasant fragrance and appear throughout the spring and summer. The fruits are reddish-brown conelike structures, 2-4 in (5-10 cm) long, with bright red kidney shaped seeds that hang from little threads when fully mature in autumn.. There are more than 100 cultivars listed, some possibly no longer available. Edith Bogue is conical and more cold hardy than most; Little Gem is compact and small, to 20 ft (6 m) with 4 in (10 cm) leaves and 6 in (15 cm) flowers; Samuel Sommer has flowers to 14 in (36 cm) ...
Magnolia × loebneri, commonly called Loebner magnolia, is a deciduous hybrid magnolia (M. kobus x M. stellata). It is a small tree typically growing to 20-30 tall with a rounded crown. It is more often grown in a multi-trunked form that as a single trunk tree. Fragrant star-like white flowers (4-6" wide) with 10-15 petals appear in early spring before the foliage (March - April in St. Louis). Flowers give way to cone-like fruits that ripen to red in late summer, releasing individual red coated seeds suspended on slender threads at maturity. Fruits are sometimes absent on this hybrid. Obovate, medium green leaves (to 5" long). A number of hybrid cultivars are now available in commerce featuring flowers that are white, blush-pink, lilac pink or pink ...

The flowers are star-shaped, with at least 12 thin, delicate petal-like tepals-some cultivars have more than 30. The leaves open bronze-green, turning to deep green as they mature, and yellow before dropping in autumn. They are oblong and about 10 cm long by about an 4 cm wide. These magnolias produce a reddish-green, knobby aggregate fruit about 5 cm long that matures and opens in early autumn. Mature fruit opens by slits to reveal orange-red seeds, but the fruits often drop before developing fully. Young twigs have smooth, shiny chestnut brown bark, while the main trunks have smooth, silvery gray bark. Like the saucer magnolia (Magnolia × soulangeana), it is deciduous, revealing a twiggy, naked frame in winter. Plants have thick, fleshy roots which are found fairly close to the surface and do not tolerate much disturbance. ...
Magnolia seeds can take 120 days to sprout, have a pre-chill requirement, and need light to germinate. With all this said, you should be able to successfully sprout your seeds if they are fresh and have been properly stored. Begin by mixing the seeds with some moistened growing medium, seal in a plastic bag, and refrigerate for four months. At the end of the pre-chill period, remove the seeds and sow them just on the surface of moistened seed starting mix in trays or pots. Gently press them into the mix, but dont bury them. Cover the trays or pots with plastic wrap to help hold in moisture. The seeds should germinate in 120 days when kept at 50F degrees. Magnolias are relatively trouble-free trees and most species grow well in USDA zones 3-6. (Youre in zone 5.) Plant your new trees in sunny spots in average garden soil and provide one-inch of water per week to the root zones until the trees are established. Magnolias produce attractive, fragrant flowers. Good luck with your seeds ...
A guide to growing the star magnolia tree. The star magnolia tree is another one of those plants that is in-between a tree and a shrub. At maturity the plant will never reach more than 15-20 feet high, although it can also approach 15 feet in width. The star magnolia tree is deciduous but it is heavily branched, and has a delightful silvery gray bark which is nice-looking against the winter landscape.

The ribosomal protein S4 gene (rps4) has been identified as a single copy sequence in the mitochondrial genomes of two distant higher plants, Magnolia and Helianthus. Sequence analysis revealed that the rps4 genes present in the magnolia and sunflower mitochondrial genomes encode S4 polypeptides of 352 and 331 amino acids, respectively, longer than their counterparts in liverwort and bacteria. Expression of the rps4 genes in the investigated higher plant mitochondria was confirmed by Western blot analysis. In Helianthus, one of two short nucleotide insertions at the 3-end introduces in the coding region a premature termination codon. Northern hybridizations and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis demonstrated that the monocistronic RNA transcripts generated from the rps4 locus in Magnolia and Helianthus mitochondria are modified by RNA editing at 28 and 13 positions, respectively. Although evolutionarily conserved, RNA editing requirements of the rps4 appear more extensive ...
The top notes are a bright, fresh, green-floral accord of galbanum and magnolia, without the powdery aldehydes of many older green florals or the aquatic notes so common in modern ones. In the drydown the whole fragrance seems to bloom like the opening of a bud, a gentle jasmine, muguet, and musk joining the magnolia accord, adding softness without covering the green tartness inherent in magnolia ...
