Genetic analyses have been performed in closely related magnetotactic bacteria, but because magnetosomes are also found in other classes of bacteria, scientists do not yet have a clear picture of the genetic components necessary for magnetosome formation. Tadashi Matsunaga of the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology and colleagues recognized that by analyzing the genome of more distantly related magnetotactic bacteria, researchers may be able to clearly define the minimal gene set needed for magnetosome synthesis.. In this work, Matsunagas group sequenced the genome of Desulfovibrio magneticus strain RS-1, a more distant relative of other magnetotactic bacteria previously studied, and is also known for the unique bullet-shape of its magnetosomes. Understanding the genes that control the morphology of these magnetosomes would be a significant breakthrough, said Matsunaga, noting that RS-1 could be the key to opening up new applications for magnetosomes.. Comparing the RS-1 genome ...

Magnetic bacteria of the species Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense align their swimming behaviour along the Earths magnetic field. Within the cells, magnetic nanoparticles, the magnetosomes, are arranged in a chain-like manner, thereby forming an intracellular compass needle. Each magnetosome consists of a magnetic iron oxide core surrounded by a membrane. In addition to lipids, this membrane also contains a variety of different proteins. The microbiologists of the University of Bayreuth have now succeeded in the coupling of biochemically active functional groups, which originate from various foreign organisms, to these proteins. The method used here starts at the stage of the genes that are responsible for the biosynthesis of the membrane proteins. These bacterial genes are fused to foreign genes from other organisms that control the production of the respective functional proteins. As soon as the genes are re-integrated into the genome, the reprogrammed bacteria produce magnetosomes that ...
damage to the myelin sheath exhibited in MS « is caused by the tiny electromagnetic vibration of magnetosomes that are standing on the myelin supported by the Earths magnetic field. » Thus is explained the well known Latitude factor in MS epedemiology. The closer to the poles, the greater the risk of developing MS. « Yes the angle of dip sets the angle to the lines of the Earths magnetic field at any lattitude. The angle of dip at the poles is 90 degrees. Both the velocity of magnetosomes and the abrasion with the myelin depend therefore on the mathematical sine of the angsle of dip at the lattitude under consideration. Therefore the quantity of damage is dependant on the sine squared. It also depends on the quantity of magnetite, i.e. the molecular mass at the point of demyelination. Finally. it depends on the stength of electromagnetic field at say 50Hz. If it is too high it will break up magnetosomes into individual molecules which will be returned to the blood ...
A novel micromanipulation method using Magnetotactic Bacteria to push micro-objects is proposed. The controllability of MC-1 Magnetotactic Bacteria in micro-channels is verified through microfluidic device with implemented micro-electromagets. After introducation of microfabrication procedure and experiment setups, the simulation and experiment results are given. The experiment results obtained show that the MC-1 can be naviagted in the microchannels with the magnetic flux generated with electric current less than 10mA. The trapping and collection of MC-1 by micro-coil is also assessed. The attachments of Magnetotactic Bacteria to microbeads, drug particles,bio-markers or phage, may have great potential as controlled micro-carriers and microactuators in many applications.
Magnetotactic bacteria are present in fresh water and marine sediments of Fortaleza, Brazil, situated close to the geomagnetic equator. Both South-seeking and North-seeking bacteria are present in roughly equal numbers in the same samples. This observation is consistent with the hypothesis that the vertical component of the geomagnetic field selects the predominant polarity type among magnetotactic bacteria in natural environments.. ...
Gene therapy has gained an increasing interest in its anti-tumor efficiency. However, numerous efforts are required to promote them to clinics. In this study, a novel and efficient delivery platform based on bacterial magnetosomes (BMs) were developed, and the efficiency of BMs in delivering small interfering ribonucleic acid (siRNA) as well as antiproliferative effects in vitro were investigated. Initially, we optimized the nitrogen/phosphate ratio and the BMs/siRNA mass ratio as 20 and 1:2, respectively, to prepare the BMs-PEI-siRNA composites. Furthermore, the prepared nanoconjugates were systematically characterized. The dynamic light scattering measurements indicated that the particle size and the zeta potential of BMs-PEI-siRNA are 196.5 nm and 49.5 ± 3.77 mV, respectively, which are optimum for cell internalization. Moreover, the confocal laser scanning microscope observations showed that these composites were at a proximity to the nucleus and led to an effective silencing effect. BMs-PEI-siRNA
In addition to illuminating core magnetosome genes, the group expects that their work on RS-1 will be a stepping-stone to manipulation of magnetosomes for new technologies. We conducted rock magnetic, mineralogical, sedimentological and geochemical analyses on a sediment core (MD161/Stn-11) retrieved from a complex marine sedimentary system of Krishna-Godavari (K-G) basin to delineate the control of mass transport deposits (MTDs) and methane-induced diagenesis on the sediment magnetic record. Four sediment magnetic zones (Z-I, Z-II, Z-III, Z-IV) were defined based on rock magnetic signatures. The sediment magnetic signal is mainly carried by complex magnetic mineral assemblages of detrital (titanomagnetite, titanohematite) and diagenetic (pyrite) minerals. Changes in rock magnetic properties are mainly controlled by fluctuations in supply of detrital magnetic particles, onset of MTDs and differential rate of methane-influenced magnetic minerals diagenesis in the studied sediment core. Downcore reduction in magnetic susceptibility followed by subsequent precipitation of iron sulfides within sediment magnetic zone (Z-I) representing the period of normal ...
Magnetic bacteria are unique bacteria that are able to sense magnetism with a prokaryotic cell organelle called magnetosome which functions as a magnetic compass. Magnetic bacteria take in iron from the environment and synthesize magnetite crystals in their cellular membrane vesicles. Magnetosome is a complex intracellular structure with these membrane vesicles arranged in a string-like pattern along the cellular skeleton. We conduct research using biochemical and molecular biological techniques and various microscopic techniques in order to explain how magnetosomes develop and function at the molecular level. We aim to explain organelle development in prokaryotic organisms and the mechanism of biomineralization with this research. ...

The tropical freshwater ecosystems represent among the richest biodiversity in the world, wherein lie great mysteries waiting to be unraveled. Microorganisms that thrive in this environment demonstrate adaptation mechanisms such as biosorption, biomineralization, extracellular sequestration and chelation in coping with this heavy metal laden environment [46]. These adaptive alternative biochemical pathways create the platform for the generation of metallic nanoparticles through intracellular biomineralization or extracellular bioreduction metallic ions in aqueous solution.. Iron based ferromagnetic nanoparticles have attracted much attention due to its versatility in pertinent applications. Magnetotactic bacteria produce uniform sized, well-defined magnetite nanoparticles in their magnetosomes but harvesting these IONPs involve scrupulous downstream extraction and purification processes. Extracellular biosynthesis has the potential of generating large volume of IONPs but the process is ...

Goodness gracious, doesnt everyone know by now that introns and transcription editing is how the human genome with some 25,000 coding genes makes some 90,000 proteins (gene products). This is accomplished via introns and transcription editing. Perhaps Santa should give Steve a subscription to Scientific American for Christmas - a magazine Ive been reading cover to cover every month for 30 years - so he wouldnt have missed The Alternative Genome and then hed know that introns arent junk DNA.. I have to immediately suspect the knowledge of anyone who says introns are junk DNA and Steve is just as ignorant by implication.. Next the author says that prokaryotes lack organelles? No one could have prepared us for how all-consuming feeding twins would be. We tried to be prepared. We took a breastfeeding class, bought the twin breastfeeding pillow, and arranged for a pump rental. I made Marty promise he would be my cheerleader when I was ready to quit. During those days in the hospital, I gave it my all. The lactation consultants were great, but unfortunately, they couldnt provide the one thing I needed: milk. I persevered, but the babies needed more. Mentally, I was breaking down...fast. I had two babies who each needed to eat at least every three hours. It was taking me at least an hour and a half to feed them both. Then I needed to pump. By the time I finished, it was time to do it all again. Everyone wanted to help, but no one could do what I needed them to do the most: feed. Finally, I succumbed to the call of formula, and from there, breastfeeding eventually gave way to exclusive formula feeding by 6-7 weeks. Certainly, convenience wasnt the only factor that ended ...

In this study, the effect on thin film growth due to an anomalous electron transport, found in high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS), has been investigated for the case of a planar circular magnetron. An important consequence of this type of transport is that it affects the way ions are being transported in the plasma. It was found that a significant fraction of ions are transported radially outwards in the vicinity of the cathode, across the magnetic field lines, leading to increased deposition rates directly at the side of the cathode ( perpendicular to the target surface). Furthermore, this mass transport parallel to the target surface leads to that the fraction of sputtered material reaching a substrate placed directly in front of the target is substantially lower in HiPIMS compared with conventional direct current magnetron sputtering (dcMS). This would help to explain the lower deposition rates generally observed for HiPIMS compared with dcMS. Moreover, time-averaged mass ...

The biomineralization of magnetotactic bacterial magnetite nanoparticles is a topic of intense research due to the particles narrow size distribution and magnetic properties. Incorporation of foreign metal ions into the crystal matrix of magnetotactic bacterial magnetite has been previously examined by a number of investigators. In this study, cells of a magnetotactic bacterium, Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense strain MSR-1 were grown in the presence of manganese, ruthenium, zinc and vanadium, of which only manganese was incorporated within the magnetosome magnetite crystals. We demonstrate that the magnetic properties of magnetite crystals of magnetotactic bacteria can be significantly altered by the incorporation of metal ions, other than iron, in the crystal structure. The Verwey transition serves as a unique marker to probe the incorporation of the dopant within the magnetosome: manganese incorporation into the magnetite nanocrystals is signaled by a suppression of the Verwey transition, as ...
To understand the molecular elements which control magnetite biomineralization there have been a number of studies of both the genomes and proteomes of different MTB and in particular of those elements closely associated with the formation of the magnetosome itself [18,25-29]. Analysis of these sequences has shown that the majority of genes involved in magnetosome biogenesis can be grouped into four key operons (mms6, mamGFDC, mamAB and mamXY clusters) in a region of the genome termed the magnetosome island (MAI) [18,28-34]. If the MAI is lost from MTB then the magnetic properties are also lost [31] and vice versa, if these key operons are transferred to non-magnetic bacteria, then they also develop the ability to produce biogenic magnetic nanocrystals [30].. The discovery of Mms6 was reported in 2003 in a pioneering study by Arakaki et al. [35]. The magnetosomes from Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB-1 were magnetically extracted from lysed cells and the lipid membrane component of the ...

Magnetotactic bacteria biomineralize ordered chains of uniform, membrane-bound magnetite or greigite nanocrystals that exhibit nearly perfect crystal structures and species-specific morphologies. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a critical technique for providing information regarding the organization of cellular and magnetite structures in these microorganisms. However, conventional TEM can only be used to image air-dried or vitrified bacteria removed from their natural environment. Here we present a correlative scanning TEM (STEM) and fluorescence microscopy technique for imaging viable cells of Magnetospirillum magneticum strain AMB-1 in liquid using an in situ fluid cell TEM holder. Fluorescently labeled cells were immobilized on microchip window surfaces and visualized in a fluid cell with STEM, followed by correlative fluorescence imaging to verify their membrane integrity. Notably, the post-STEM fluorescence imaging indicated that the bacterial cell wall membrane did not sustain ...
Glycolysis is the process of converting glucose into pyruvate and generating small amounts of ATP (energy) and NADH (reducing power). It is a central pathway that produces important precursor metabolites: six-carbon compounds of glucose-6P and fructose-6P and three-carbon compounds of glycerone-P, glyceraldehyde-3P, glycerate-3P, phosphoenolpyruvate, and pyruvate [MD:M00001]. Acetyl-CoA, another important precursor metabolite, is produced by oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate [MD:M00307]. When the enzyme genes of this pathway are examined in completely sequenced genomes, the reaction steps of three-carbon compounds from glycerone-P to pyruvate form a conserved core module [MD:M00002], which is found in almost all organisms and which sometimes contains operon structures in bacterial genomes. Gluconeogenesis is a synthesis pathway of glucose from noncarbohydrate precursors. It is essentially a reversal of glycolysis with minor variations of alternative paths [MD:M00003 ...
Many atoms behave like compass needles, that is, like little magnetic dipoles with a north and a south pole. If you put them close together in a crystal, all the dipoles should align themselves to each other, making the material magnetic. However, this is not the case. A magnetic material is only created when specific quantum mechanical forces are at work. Normally, the forces between the atomic dipoles are by far too weak to cause magnetic order. Moreover, even at low temperatures, the thermal energy causes so much movement of the dipoles that complete chaos is the result. However, the fundamental question remains of how magnetic dipoles would align themselves if the force between them was big enough, Prof. Zabel explains the research project ...
Discovery may lead to novel biotech and nanotech uses. Nevada, the Silver State, is well-known for mining precious metals.. But scientists Dennis Bazylinski and colleagues at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) do a different type of mining.. Magnetostratigraphy is a chronostratigraphic technique used to date sedimentary and volcanic sequences. The method works by collecting oriented samples at measured intervals throughout a section. The samples are analyzed to determine their detrital remanent magnetism (DRM), that is, the polarity of Earths magnetic field at the time a stratum was deposited. For sedimentary rocks this is possible because, as they fall through the water column, very fine-grained magnetic minerals (, 17 μm) behave like tiny compasses, orienting themselves with Earths magnetic field. Upon burial, that orientation is preserved. For volcanic rocks, magnetic minerals, which form in the melt, orient themselves with the ambient magnetic field, and are fixed in place upon crystallization of the lava. Oriented paleomagnetic core samples are collected in the field; mudstones, siltstones, and very fine-grained sandstones are the preferred lithologies because the magnetic grains are finer and more likely to orient with the ...
The Solar Anomalous and Magnetospheric Particle Explorer (SAMPEX) was a low polar orbiting satellite operating from 1992 to 2012. The goal of this master project has been to see if Terrestrial Electron Beams (TEBs), ~20 ms bursts of electrons, were detected by the Heavy Ion Large Telescope (HILT) instrument on SAMPEX. After 1996 this instrument was switched to a mode where electrons in excess of 1 MeV were detectable, with a time resolution of 20 ms and a geometric factor of 60 cm^2sr. The time resolution and the relatively large geometric factor are reasons why we use HILT on SAMPEX. TEBs are secondary relativistic electrons generated by Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs) via Compton scattering and pair production. These electrons gyrate along geomagnetic field lines out to space. It is possible for satellites to detect such electrons several thousands of kilometers from where they originate, if the satellite passes through the actual field line at the right moment. To distinguish real ...

If youre into playing emulated games, then you know about the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. Through MAME, users can enjoy hundreds of arcade games. While there are a great deal of arcade ROMs out there, there are quite a few games that havent been emulated due to DRM-protected chips. As reported on Ars Technica, some MAME devs are now getting around this road block by opening up these chips in order to see the raw code written on them.. This unusual technique is called decapping. This involves physically removing the chips cap with nitric acid and acetone. This exposes the underlying circuit paths inside of the chip, making it possible to get at the raw code. For some chips, soldering the exposed circuitry allows for dumped files that circumvent DRM. For non-rewritable Mask ROM chips, chip decappers can use a microscope to see the ones and zeroes of the raw code. This is a complicated process - but as the old saying goes - nothing worth doing is ever easy. ...
Many astrophysical environments are thought to contain force-free magnetic fields. The sine field is an example of a force-free, helical magnetic field, whose field lines are chaotic over the entire space. In this thesis, we examine the transport properties of magnetic field lines and particles in three related systems: the sine field, the sine field superimposed with a constant background field, and a time varying sine field. We also compare results with the Arnold-Beltrami-Childress (ABC) field. In the time-independent sine field, we find that particles exhibit chaotic motion, shown by a non-zero distribution of Lyapunov exponents (LE). While for low energies the asymtotic LE do not depend on initial particle position or angle with respect to the local magnetic field line, these parameters are important for higher energies. On larger time scales, we find that an ensemble of particles undergoes close to normal diffusion for low energies and superdiffusion for high energies. This contrasts with ...
The spectacular aurora borealis displays that light up the northern nights could be powered by a gigantic slinky effect in Earth s magnetic field lines, according to research performed at the University of Minnesota. Earth s magnetic field resemble a slinky in that when wiggled, it undulates in waves that travel down the field lines at speeds up to 25 million miles per hour. These waves can pass energy to electrons, accelerating them along the magnetic field lines toward Earth. When the electrons hit atoms in the atmosphere, the atoms become excited and produce the colors of the aurora. Using electric and magnetic field data and images from NASA s POLAR satellite, the researchers showed that energy from such waves is sufficient to power auroras and that statistically, the waves occur in the same locations as auroras--in a ring around the poles. The work will be published in the Jan. 17 issue of Science. ...

Novel nanomaterial-organism hybrids with biomedical potential Instinctive hierarchically biomineralized structures of various organisms, such as eggs, algae, and magnetotactic bacteria, afford extra protection and distinct performance, which endow fragile organisms with a tenacious ability to adapt and survive. However, spontaneous formation of hybrid materials is difficult for most organisms in nature. Rapid development of chemistry and materials science successfully obtained the combinations of organisms with nanomaterials by biomimetic mineralization thus demonstrating the reproduction of the structures and functions and generation of novel functions that organisms do not possess. The rational design of biomaterial-organism hybridization can control biological recognition, interactions, and metabolism of the organisms. Thus, nanomaterial-organism hybrids represent a next generation of…. ...

The most usual reasons a fabulous Society Finch can get sick is assuming they are given a poor diet, if most of the cage isnt really kept sparkling or they was probably somewhere who was drafty and additionally got perfectly chilled. All the hands down things is prevented because of a good good diet, a snug environment this really is clean and therefore the size cage intended to allow the property to get workouts with room from which fly to the cage. www.healthysociety.us ...

Instructions. This applet is designed to allow you to explore charged particle motion in an electrostatic potential. It also illustrates graphically that the electric field pushes perpendicular to itself by showing the field lines as a particle tries to enter a region of field which opposes its entry. WARNING: For some versions of Netscape, the RESTART botton works fine as long as you never go away from the canvas with the charges on it. However it you page down and come back, it no longer works. The applet seems to freeze, and to get it to work again you have to quit the browser and restart. Hitting RELOAD does not help. This is not a problem with other versions of Netscape or with Explorer. In particular, we have two particles both with charge +Q fixed on the positive and negative y-axis a distance 150 meters from the origin, and one particle with charge +q that is free to move. That particle is initially on the negative x-axis 450 meters from the origin moving in the positive x-direction ...
With two outs in the sixth, after singles by Victor Martinez (3-for-4) and Jeremy Hermida (solo dong in the fourth), Reddick hacked at Chris Rays first pitch and lofted a pop-up down the left field line. Josh Hamilton ran over to the stands, but he overran the ball and had it drop behind him. The ball then caromed up into the seats, hit a fan in the head, and landed back on the field. However, the umpires, much to Texas manager Ron Washingtons dismay, did not correctly rule it a ground-rule double, so the Red Sox got two runs on the play, instead of having Hermida stop at third. That cut Texass lead to 6-4 ...

Mladik na malem meste prijde jednom domu v dobre nalade a hrde oznamuje tatinkovi, ze se seznamil s jednou moc fajn slecnou a vypada to na vaznou znamost. Je to pry pekarova dcera. Tatinek si ho vezme stranou a rika: Vis, synku, musim ti neco rict. Synku, ...
