Serum protein electrophoresis was performed in 63% of 1,069 consecutive patients with lymphoma. No monoclonal peaks of IgM specificity were found in sera from 345 patients with nodular lymphoma or Hodgkins disease. Of the remaining 333 patients with diffuse lymphoma, 1.5% had an IgG peak, suggesting a coincidental relationship of IgG peaks to lymphoma. IgM peaks occurred in 3.6% of patients with diffuse lymphoma, a prevalence about 60 times more frequent than that in normal subjects. Such peaks were more frequent in older patients, suggesting an increased incidence of lymphomas producing monoclonal macroglobulins with advancing age. There was a close correlation between lymphoma mass and the level of the IgM peak in individual patients. Results supported the value of identifying monoclonal components in all patients with lymphoma, particularly those with diffuse lymphocytic infiltration. ...

Identification of CD3+ T lymphocytes in the green turtle Chelonia mydas
To understand the role of the immune system with respect to disease in reptiles, there is the need to develop tools to assess the hosts immune response. An important tool is the development of molecular markers to identify immune cells, and these are limited for reptiles. We developed a technique for the cryopreservation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells and showed that a commercially available anti-CD3 epsilon chain antibody detects a subpopulation of CD3 positive peripheral blood lymphocytes in the marine turtle Chelonia mydas. In the thymus and in skin inoculated with phytohemagglutinin, the same antibody showed the classical staining pattern observed in mammals and birds. For Western blot, the anti-CD3 antibodies identified a 17.6 kDa band in membrane proteins of peripheral blood mononuclear cell compatible in weight to previously described CD3 molecules. No evidence of such regulation has been reported for the antimicrobial peptides/proteins (innate immunity) which are preventively secreted by the hen oviduct and are active against a large range of microbes. We investigated whether the egg innate defences can be stimulated by the environmental microbial contamination by comparing the antimicrobial activity of EW of hens raised in three extreme breeding conditions: Germ-free (GF), Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) and Conventional (C) hens. The present study investigated the effect of marine debris on the gastrointestinal tract of green turtles in southeastern Brazil. Of the 777 animals evaluated, 290 showed marine debris in one segment of the gastrointestinal tract. The presence of these materials in the gastrointestinal tract may be harmful, independent of the segment involved, and increases the risk of impaction. Complete gross and histopathologic examinations of the oral cavity, tongue, pharynx, larynx, and glottis were performed in five Hawaiian green turtles Chelonia mydas with fibropapillomatosis. These examinations demonstrated that the oropharyngeal fibropapillomas were similar to characteristic external fibropapillomas previously described for green turtles. The size, appearance, and anatomic site of the tumors confirmed that these turtles presented total or partial occlusion of the nasopharynx, glottis, larynx, and adjacent tissues. The fibropapillomas of the oropharynx were considered locally invasive and severely modified the morphophysiology of respiration and feeding in these turtles. More than twenty years of active research on green turtle (Chelonia mydas) in the South West Indian Ocean (SWIO) have contributed to improve the knowledge of the species biology and ecology. However, lots of gaps still remain regarding the links between the main behavioral processes: alimentation, reproduction and migration, while shifts in these processes at individual scale have major impacts at population scale. On this basis, we have started implementing a spatially explicit individual-based model (IBM) to assess population dynamics of the green turtle in the SWIO. Our simulation experiment aims to unify, in a single model, alimentation, navigation and reproduction constraints as well as potential changes in foraging or breeding sites.

The method used in the current study allowed measurement of swimming effort and V̇O2 within 2 min of hatchlings being placed in the water. I found that the greatest swimming effort and oxygen consumption occurred within the first 10 min of hatchlings entering the water, and that swimming effort and oxygen consumption decreased rapidly during the first 2 h of swimming (Fig. 2).
