Converts progesterone to its inactive form, 20-alpha-dihydroxyprogesterone (20-alpha-OHP). In the liver and intestine, may have a role in the transport of bile. May have a role in monitoring the intrahepatic bile acid concentration. May play a role in myelin formation. Can oxidize both 20-alpha- and 3-alpha-hydroxysteroids.
Four Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata), weighing between 3.3 and 4.6 kg, were used. A single PHA-L injection was made in TEad of the right hemisphere of two monkeys and in TEav of the right hemisphere of the other two monkeys. Three of these four PHA-L cases were also used in another study conducted in this laboratory (Saleem and Tanaka, 1996).. Surgery and injection. The methods for surgery and injection have been described in detail by Saleem et al. (1993) and Saleem and Tanaka (1996). Briefly, PHA-L was delivered during aseptic surgery under general anesthesia. After an initial introduction of atropine sulfate (0.1 mg/kg, i.m.), the monkey was anesthetized with ketamine hydrochloride (12 mg/kg, i.m.), followed by intraperitoneal injection of sodium pentobarbital (Nembutal, 35 mg/kg). Tranexamic acid (25 mg/kg, i.m.) was administered to minimize bleeding. Supplemental doses of sodium pentobarbital (9 mg/kg, i.p.) were injected when necessary to maintain the surgical level of anesthesia.. After ...
If you have a question about this talk, please contact Lorena Escudero.. Homo sapiens has a global distribution, a remarkable achievement for a tropical ape. Adaptations enabling this colonisation are intriguing given suggestions that humans exhibits high levels of physiological and behavioural malleability associated with a colonising niche. Differences in body size/shape between members of the same species from different climates are well-known adaptations in mammals; could relatively flexible size/shape have been important to human species adapting to novel habitats? If so, at what point did this flexibility arise? To address these questions, a base-line for adaptation to climate must be established by comparison with suitable outgroups. Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) are the most northerly living non-human primates. They have great latitudinal spread and overlap with the historical distribution of prehistoric Jomon foragers, allowing matched latitude comparisons within monkeys and ...

We were worried about the sole survivor being lonely so we went chook shopping yesterday. We bought some young grey bantam hens (4 in total - Poppet, Sylvanus, Violet and Katherine) and two white Silkie Hens (Elizabeth and Fergie) and two white Silkie roosters (Capn Jack and George). We have re-done the gate to the chook pen and now have a gate on the chook house as well so they are completely safe of an evening. Our new chookies are only young so it will be some time before they are laying - but thats okay. We hope to get some older Silkies soon - we have put our order in ...
Electrophysiological recording. In a first set of animals, quantitative electrophysiological recording terminal experiments were performed on seven adult macaque monkeys (Macaca fascicularis or M. mulatta). All procedures conformed to British Home Office and United States National Institute of Health guidelines. Animals were premedicated with atropine sulfate (0.02-0.04 mg/kg) and acepromazine maleate (0.05 mg/kg) and preanesthetized with ketamine (10-30 mg/kg, i.m.). The trachea and saphenous veins were cannulated; the animal was artificially ventilated with room air or with a 50:50 mixture of O2 and N2O; and anesthesia was maintained by continuous intravenous infusion of sufentanil citrate (4-8 μg · kg−1 · hr−1). The animals head was fixed to a stereotaxic apparatus; a small craniotomy and durotomy were made over the occipital cortex; and a tungsten-in-glass microelectrode (Merril and Ainsworth, 1972) was positioned over the exposed cortex, which was then covered with warm agar. To ...

Japanese macaque monkeys infected with a newly identified virus develop a progressive disease characterized by paresis in one or more limbs, ataxia, or ocular motor paresis - providing a potential new animal model for multiple sclerosis research.. The multiple sclerosis (MS) community has a surprising and important new animal model, the Japanese macaque monkey, which could provide a tantalizing new clue to the etiology of the human disease. The monkey develops an MS-like demyelinating disease after infection with a newly characterized virus, according to a study that appeared online before print in the Annals of Neurology.. The new model offers the opportunity to try to understand the pathogenesis in an animal a lot closer to humans, and to test therapeutics, said Neurology Today Associate Editor Kenneth L. Tyler, MD, who was not involved in the research. It also raises the possibility that a related virus could potentially be playing a role in human disease, said Dr. Tyler, the Reuler-Lewin ...
Japanese macaques, an old world primate, illustrate this principle perfectly. Macaque society revolves around females, who form intricate dominance hierarchies within a given group. Males are transient. To help maintain the necessary social networks, female macaques engage in rampant lesbianism. These friendly copulations, which can last up to four days, form the bedrock of macaque society, preventing unnecessary violence and aggression. Females that sleep together will even defend each other from the unwanted advances of male macaques. In fact, behavioral scientist Paul Vasey has found that females will choose to mate with another female, as opposed to a horny male, 92.5% of the time. While this lesbianism probably decreases reproductive success for macaques in the short term, in the long run it is clearly beneficial for the species, since it fosters social stability. Same-sex sexuality is just another way of maintaining physical intimacy, Roughgarden says. Its like grooming, except we have ...

Little is known of the impact of Fc receptor (FcR) polymorphism in macaques on the binding of human (hu)IgG, and nothing is known of this interaction in the pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina), which is used in preclinical evaluation of vaccines and therapeutic Abs. We defined the sequence and huIgG binding characteristics of the M. nemestrina activating FcγRIIa (mnFcγRIIa) and inhibitory FcγRIIb (mnFcγRIIb) and predicted their structures using the huIgGFc/huFcγRIIa crystal structure. Large differences were observed in the binding of huIgG by mnFcγRIIa and mnFcγRIIb compared with their human FcR counterparts. MnFcγRIIa has markedly impaired binding of huIgG1 and huIgG2 immune complexes compared with huFcγRIIa (His(131)). In contrast, mnFcγRIIb has enhanced binding of huIgG1 and broader specificity, as, unlike huFcγRIIb, it avidly binds IgG2. Mutagenesis and molecular modeling of mnFcγRIIa showed that Pro(159) and Tyr(160) impair the critical FG loop interaction with huIgG. The ...
Many species use facial features to identify conspecifics, which is necessary to navigate a complex social environment. The fundamental mechanisms underlying face processing are starting to be well understood in a variety of primate species. However, most studies focus on a limited subset of species tested with unfamiliar faces. As well as limiting our understanding of how widely distributed across species these skills are, this also limits our understanding of how primates process faces of individuals they know, and whether social factors (e.g. dominance and social bonds) influence how readily they recognize others. In this study, socially housed crested macaques voluntarily participated in a series of computerized matching-to-sample tasks investigating their ability to discriminate (i) unfamiliar individuals and (ii) members of their own social group. The macaques performed above chance on all tasks. Familiar faces were not easier to discriminate than unfamiliar faces. However, the subjects ...

The fetal death In Uterus is relatively a common problem in developing countries. In Africa, the rate of deaths varies from one hospital to another. We wanted to evaluate the prevalence, to describe the epidemiological aspects, etiologies and maternal prognosis associated with fetal deaths in Uterus in 2017 at Sylvanus Olympio Teaching Hospital in Lomé. Patients and methods: This was a retrospective descriptive study conducted from January 1st to December 31st, 2017. We have included all pregnant cases received and treated on the spot for in uterus deaths as defined by the World Health Organization. Medical termination of pregnancy records, intrapartum deaths, less than 22 amenorrhea weeks pregnancies and complications of abortion were not included. Results: The fetal death rate in uterus was 3.64%. The multigravida and multiparous were respectively 49% and 41%; the referees were 51%, 28% evacuated; 21% came on their own. The gestational age of 28 - 37 weeks was 39% and 17% had no prenatal
HIV-1 does not persistently infect macaques due in part to restriction by several macaque host factors. This has been partially circumvented by generating chimeric SIV/HIV-1 viruses (SHIVs) that encode SIV antagonist of known restriction factors. However, most SHIVs replicate poorly in macaques unless they are further adapted in culture and/or macaques (adapted SHIVs). Therefore, development of SHIVs encoding HIV-1 sequences derived directly from infected humans without adaptation (unadapted SHIVs) has been challenging. In contrast to the adapted SHIVs, the unadapted SHIVs have lower replication kinetics in macaque lymphocytes and are sensitive to type-1 interferon (IFN). The HIV-1 Envelope (Env) in the chimeric virus determines both the reduced replication and the IFN-sensitivity differences. There is limited information on macaque restriction factors that specifically limit replication of the more biologically relevant, unadapted SHIV variants. In order to identify the IFN-induced host ...

we used RNA-Seq to quantify the RNA editing level at more than 8,000 previously annotated exonic A-to-I RNA editing sites in two brain regions - prefrontal cortex and cerebellum - of humans, chimpanzees and rhesus macaques. We observed substantial conservation of RNA editing levels between the brain regions, as well as among the three primate species. Evolutionary changes in RNA editing were nonetheless evident among the species. Across lifespan, we observed an increase of the RNA editing level with advanced age in both brain regions of all three primate species.

Dont drills have beautiful rear ends? Since this weeks submissions have focused on paleoanthropology and human evolution, Im adding in a few interesting primatological posts. Beast Ape discusses primate coloration in Badge of Status in Drills. While male coloration is often though to be a result of sexual selection, particularly as a result of female choice, a recent study has found that while male coloration in drills is a badge of social status, it does not relate to female preference within a given a given rank. Over at Prancing Papio, Raymond Ho discusses recent evidence for Grandmothering in Japanese Macaques. Although the evidence is limited and anecdotal, this is one of the first published accounts in support of the Grandmother Hypothesis from nonhuman primates. I think this is important, because I suspect theres been more observations of grandmothering in primates (Im pretty sure Ive heard of it happening in rhesus macaques, and wouldnt be surprised if there were accounts from ...
