The Curtius rearrangement (or Curtius reaction or Curtius degradation), first defined by Theodor Curtius in 1885, is the thermal decomposition of an acyl azide to an isocyanate with loss of nitrogen gas. The isocyanate then undergoes attack by a variety of nucleophiles such as water, alcohols and amines, to yield a primary amine, carbamate or urea derivative respectively. Several reviews have been published. The acyl azide is usually made from the reaction of acid chlorides or anydrides with sodium azide or trimethylsilyl azide. Acyl azides are also obtained from treating acylhydrazines with nitrous acid. Alternatively, the acyl azide can be formed by the direct reaction of a carboxylic acid with diphenylphosphoryl azide (DPPA). It was originally believed that the Curtius rearrangement was a two-step process, with the loss of nitrogen gas forming an acyl nitrene, followed by migration of the R-group to give the isocyanate. However, recent research has indicated that the thermal decomposition is ...

Both molecules contain two contiguous quarternary stereocenters and sieboldine A Scheme 1. Retrosynthetic analysis. This isnt the first time that a homeopathic remedy has been found to be effective against cancer. Two previous studies have produced similarly exciting results. Frenkel, M. et al. (2010) used ultra-diluted remedies of Phytolacca, Carcinosin, Conium, and Thuja on breast cancer cells and witnessed a deactivation of the cancer in a process called cytotoxicity. Another team, led by Toliopoulos IK, Simos Y, Bougiouklis D and Oikonomidis S (2013), discovered that certain homeopathic complexes were able to stimulate the anti-cancer activity of Natural Killer Cells (part of our immune system) in cancer patients ...

Our moulding starch Special [Formpuder Spezial] is used in foundries. It is micronized mineral material that is water-repellent on account of its hydrophobic properties, thus enabling the easy separation of the two moulding halves after casting. Lycopodium substitute [Lykopodiumersatz] (of mineral origin) can be used in the same way as the moulding starch Special [Formpuder Spezial]. In addition, Lycopodium substitute [Lykopodiumersatz] does not only float on water, but also adheres to vertical surfaces, due to a modified production process. This product is distinguished by an enhanced range of uses e. g. in sample production. ...
Cholecystitis is an inflammation of the gall bladder. The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ present on the right side of the abdomen, just below the liver. It stores bile and sends it to the small digestive through a duct. Bile helps in the digestion of fats. Stones may block the duct that leads to the […] ...

In these videos adapted from the Journal of Chemical Education, learn about the dangers of grain elevators and observe the combustion of lycopodium powder. The demonstrator places fine particles of lycopodium powder into a funnel inside a container that also holds a lit candle. Air is forced through the funnel, causing the powder to disperse within the container, and then resulting in an explosive chemical reaction. This demonstration illustrates the hazard of dust explosions-specifically, ...

Clubmoss cone, light micrograph. Longitudinal section through the cone (strobilus) of the clubmoss Lycopodium clavatum. The strobilus consists of a central axis (purple). At right and left are the spore capsules (sporangia), including an inner wall (red) and spores (orange). The sporangia burst open to release the spores. These then germinate to form gametophyte plants that continue the reproductive cycle. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres high. - Stock Image C002/5740

Here is another local evergreen, Lycopodium obscurum, with the common names of Princess Pine, Ground Pine, and Tree Clubmoss. Some of these names are misleading, as this little being is not of the Pine family but of the Clubmoss family, Lycopodiaceae. They might look like little evergreen conifers, but reproduce by spores rather than cone and seed. They also multiply by way of underground creeping stems ...
By some miracle I stumbled on this incredible article written in 2006 by actor Dirk Benedict. For those unfamiliar with his name, he is an American film and stage actor with a career that dates back to the 1970s. His big break came in the late 1970s when he won a lead role on the…

The lycopodium alkaloids are a large and extensively studied alkaloid family. Huperzine A (1), the medicinally most significant lycopodine alkaloid as a potential treatment for Alzheimers disease, functions as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor but may have other roles as has been addressed in several recent reviews. Sauroine (2, 7,8-dihydroxylycopodine), from Huperzia saururus, was reported in 2004 and shown in 2009 to improve memory retention in the step-down test in male Wistar rats, significantly increasing hippocampal plasticity. 7-Hydroxylycopodine (3), from Huperzia serrata, was also reported in 2004 and may have related biological activity.. ...

This is a putrid remedy, and will be found most useful in the putrid variety of dyspepsia. Carbo is putrid and Sulphuric acid is sour. When carbo is indicated the patient will be below par, the digestion will be slow and imperfect, there will be a weight in the stomach and intestines and a faint, gone sensation in the stomach not relieved by eating, but after a few mouthfuls there is a sense of repletion. There is a burning in the stomach extending to the back and along the spine to the interscapular region. There is great distention of the stomach and bowels, which is temporarily relieved by belching. The flatulence of Carbo vegetabilis is more in the stomach, and that of Lycopodium more in the intestines. The eructations are rancid, sour or putrid. There is heaviness, fullness and sleepiness after eating, but not so much as in Nux moschata and Lycopodium. The symptoms are worse from fat, fish, oysters, ice cream, vinegar or cabbage. Coffee disagrees, and milk increases the flatulence. There is ...

Gemmiferous branchlets and gemmae absent. Sporangia reniform, borne individually in axils of undifferentiated or slightly differentiated sporophylls [differentiated sporophylls in strobili].
