An emerging public health strategy is to enhance childrens opportunities to be physically active during school break periods. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the Lunchtime Enjoyment Activity and Play (LEAP) school playground intervention on primary school childrens quality of life (QOL), enjoyment and participation in physical activity (PA). This study consisted of a movable/recycled materials intervention that included baseline, a 7-week post-test and an 8-month follow-up data collection phase. Children within an intervention school (n = 123) and a matched control school (n = 152) aged 5-to-12-years-old were recruited for the study. This morning, Im thankful for unexpected wake up calls. I was abruptly woken up this morning by a five year old boy who chose 6am to be the perfect time to poop. Of course, this had to be done in my bathroom. He sat and swung his legs and sang a couple songs. He made all sorts of sound effects with his mouth as only little boys can do: I heard trains, race cars, rockets, explosions, etc. He came up with a story line and characters and played out the scenario of a "bad guy" trying to outrun a police man in his fast sports car. This went on for nearly half an hour before he hollered, "MOM-MYYYYY, Im done!" This really means, "Mommy, come walk into this bathroom that smells like death to find all the toilet paper rolled out on the floor, and wipe my bottom." You can believe me or not. I grew up not believing in this stuff but I have for quite some time now. I have been held down in my sleep twice now. It is as if you are alert to it, like your mind is telling you to get up and move yet you cannot. This happened 4-5 times one night. It happens maybe every couple of months or so. Sometimes I find its after she has a busy/active day but thats not always the case. You can hear her tossing and turning in her bed and moaning. Shell then wake up crying and say that her leg is bothering her. She is half asleep, in pain, and a sore sight. We usually try to just comfort her and massage her leg the first time she wakes up to see if that helps. If were still up (like the other night) well bring her downstairs with us for a bit. Usually though, one time is never where it ends. Shell fall back asleep and then wake up within an hour later and the process repeats. Ive learned now to give her a pain reliever after she wakes up the second time because if shes up twice shell be up off and on the whole night. Clearly, I dont want her in pain but do try to wait on the meds because I dont want to give her medicine if I dont have to.
