Vaginal lubrication - Wikipedia
Vaginal lubrication is a naturally produced fluid that lubricates a womans vagina. Vaginal lubrication is always present, but production increases significantly near ovulation and during sexual arousal in anticipation of sexual intercourse. Vaginal dryness is the condition in which this lubrication is insufficient, and sometimes artificial lubricants are used to augment it. Without sufficient lubrication, sexual intercourse can be painful to women as well as their male partners. The vaginal lining has no glands, and therefore the vagina must rely on other methods of lubrication. Plasma from vaginal walls due to vascular engorgement is considered to be the chief lubrication source, and the Bartholins glands, located slightly below and to the left and right of the introitus (vaginal opening), also secrete mucus to augment vaginal-wall secretions. Near ovulation, cervical mucus provides additional lubrication. The lubricative fluid contains water, pyridine, squalene, urea, acetic acid, lactic ...

The Role Of Lubricin And Galectins In Osteoarthritis And Cartilage Lubrication
The aim of this thesis was to investigate how lubricin and galectins function within the synovial environment to maintain joint integrity and enhance articular cartilage lubrication. The specific aims of the research were to 1) evaluate how lubricin gene and glycoprotein expression were altered in equine carpal osteoarthritis (OA); 2) investigate the interactions between synovial lubricin and galectins-1 and -3 to determine if lubricin and galectins could synergistically enhance articular cartilage boundary lubrication and; 3) evaluate equine mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) galectin expression and the role of galectins-1 and -3 on MSC properties. Lubricin gene expression was quantified in joint tissues obtained from horses with experimental and naturally occurring carpal OA. Experimental OA was induced by creating a 6mm osteochondral chip fracture within the middle carpal joint (MCJ) of horses followed by high-speed treadmill exercise, and joints were assessed 70 days post-fragmentation using gross, ...

1.14. ENGINE LUBRICATION SYSTEM.
TM 5-3895-373-20 1.14. ENGINE LUBRICATION SYSTEM. The main components of the engine lubrication system include the oil pump, oil cooler, oil filter, and oil pressure sensing devices. The lubrication of the engine is of the force feed type. The oil is circulated by a gear type pump internal to the engine balancer unit mounted to the bottom of the engine block inside the oil sump. The oil is drawn through a sump strainer tube to the pump. Oil is then pumped to the engine internal oil passages. The oil pump provides a high pressure oil flow to a through port on the engine oil adapter plate. A supply hose connected to the port routes the high pressure oil to the oil cooler and filter. A pressure tap off the high pressure port supplies oil to an engine oil pressure transmitter. The resistance of the transmitter changes based on the sensed oil pressure. A pressure gauge on the operator gauge panel displays the oil pressure. Inside the oil cooler high pressure oil flows through cooling vanes and into ...

Lubricants | Free Full-Text | Rolling Friction Torque in Ball-Race Contacts Operating in Mixed Lubrication Conditions
Based on a theoretical model and an experimental methodology for defining the friction torque for lubricated conditions in a modified thrust ball bearing having only three balls, the authors experimentally investigated the influence of the lubricant parameter Λ on friction torque for mixed IVR (isoviscous rigid) and EHL (elastohydrodynamic) lubrication conditions. The experiments were conducted using ball diameters of 3 mm, 3.97 mm and 6.35 mm loaded at 0.125 N, 0.400 N and 0.633 N. Two oils of viscosity 0.08 Pa·s and 0.05 Pa·s were used and rotational speed was varied in the range 60-210 rpm to obtain a lubricant parameter Λ varying between 0.3 and 3.2. The experiments confirmed that the measured friction torque can be explained using hydrodynamic rolling force relationships respecting the transition from an IVR to an EHL lubrication regime.

Variation in joint fluid composition and its effect on the tribology of replacement joint...
Polyethylene wear is a significant clinical problem limiting the long-term survival of joint replacement prostheses, particularly in total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Although the tribology of joint replacement has consequently become an area of significant research, the effect of joint fluid on lubrication in the replaced joint has been largely overlooked. Several factors that affect the tribology of metal on polyethylene articulation in joint prostheses stem from the fluid lubricating the joint. In particular, the properties and composition of joint fluid likely contribute to fluid film lubrication and boundary lubrication in joint replacements, as they do in natural joints. The primary objective of this thesis is to examine the effect of natural variation in joint fluid composition and properties on friction, lubrication, and wear in joint arthroplasty. To achieve this goal, several parameters relating to the composition and mechanical properties of joint fluid ...

Tips on how to Repair Leg Arthritis And Damaged Articular Cartilage - Pugh69Herskind
The main synovial joints such as hips and knees are uniquely efficient tribological systems, able to articulate more than a wide range of shear rates with a friction coefficient involving the sliding cartilage surfaces as low as 0. 001 up to pressures of more than 100 atm. No human-made materials can match this. The means by which many of these surfaces maintain their very low friction has been intensively studied for decades and has been caused by fluid-film and boundary lubrication. Right 4 flex cena here, we focus especially about the latter: the decrease of friction by molecular layers at the moving cartilage surfaces. In particular, we discuss such lubrication in the light of very recent advances in our understanding of boundary effects in aqueous press depending on the paradigms of hydration lubrication and of the synergism between distinct molecular components of the synovial joints (namely hyaluronan, lubricin, and phospholipids) in permitting this lubrication ...
Identification of lubrication regime on textured surfaces by multi-scale decomposition - University of Huddersfield Repository
This paper focuses on the analysis of surfaces resulting from thickness reduction of aluminium strips, provided with lubricant reservoirs, and deformed with different lubricant viscosities and drawing velocities, by a specific experimental drawing process. During reduction, the lubricant is pressurized and may escape from its initial cavities and supply the neighbouring ones. The nature of the lubrication regime is thus locally changed and may vary from boundary to hydrodynamic. The deformed surfaces are measured by means of a Vertical Scanning Interferometer then analysed in terms of arithmetic roughness and developed roughness profile length. Since these two parameters are found not accurate enough to identify regions where different lubrication phenomena occurred, a method based on roughness peaks and valleys curvature radii estimation, recently developed by some of the present authors, is applied. The acquired surfaces are assumed as fractal surfaces and a multiscale decomposition of the ...
The influence of single-channel liquid CO2 and MQL delivery on surface integrity in machining of Inconel 718
Sustainable machining of difficult-to-cut materials requires effective cooling and lubrication techniques. To substitute conventional flood cooling and lubrication, different techniques such as cryogenic cooling and/or minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) can be used. Liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2) can be pre-mixed with different lubricants before its delivery to the cutting zone. This article investigates the influence of this recently developed cooling and lubrication method on surface integrity characteristics in milling of Inconel 718. Surface roughness, surface topography and microstructure were evaluated for flood lubrication, dry cutting and LCO2 machining using a single-channel LCO2 and MQL strategy. Moreover, two different lubricants were evaluated for MQL: (i) conventional MQL oil and (ii) solid lubricant molybdenum di-sulphide (MoS2). In addition to being environmentally friendly, MoS2 lubricated LCO2 showed comparable surface characteristics to flood lubrication. Also, the use of lubricated LCO2

PDF] The Impact of Lubricants on Latex Condoms during Vaginal Intercourse | Semantic Scholar
The objective was to evaluate the impact of additional lubricant on condom breakage and slippage. Two hundred and sixty-eight couples used 6 new and 6 aged condoms during vaginal intercourse and were instructed to use 2 of each type with either water-based lubricant, oil-based lubricant or no additional lubricant. The use of either oil-based or water-based lubricant increased slippage rates of new and aged condoms, although only one pairwise comparison (oil-based lubricant vs. no additional lubricant) was statistically significant (8.5% vs. 3.8%, P=0.004). The use of oil-based lubricant increased breakage, although not statistically significantly, in both new and aged condoms. Water-based lubricant did not impact the breakage rate of the new condoms and decreased the breakage rate of the aged condoms (no additional lubricant 4.5% vs. water-based lubricant 2.1%, P=0.029). From a functional perspective, this study suggests that condom users should be told not to use oil-based lubricants. The negative
Piston Ring / Cylinder Bore Friction Under Flooded and Starved Lubrication Using Fresh and Aged Engine Oils - SAE International
The friction reducing capability of engine oils in the piston ring/cylinder bore contact was investigated under fully-flooded and starved lubrication conditions at 100° C using a laboratory piston ring/cylinder bore friction rig. The rig is designed to acquire instantaneous transient measurements of applied loads and friction forces at the ring/bore interface in reciprocating motion over a 50.8 mm stroke. The effects of increasing load and speed on the friction coefficient have been compared with new and used engine oils of different viscosity that were formulated with and without friction modifying additives. Test results with fully formulated engine oils containing molybdenum dithiocarbamate (MoDTC) show that friction is always lower than that obtained with non-friction modified oils but in regions of persistent starvation the coefficient of friction can increase significantly, approaching levels equivalent to fully-flooded non-friction modified formulations. The laboratory rig was able to ...
The lubrication of natural and artificial hip joints - Durham e-Theses
Cadaveric hip joints and prostheses were tested in a hip Function simulator which subjected the Femoral head to a cycle of loading and oscillation similar to that experienced during walking, and measured the Frictional torque transmitted to the acetabulum. For natural joints, silicone Fluids with viscosities From 10(^-2) Pa s to 30 Pa s were used as lubricants and Full Fluid Film lubrication was observed above 10(^-1) Pa s. Sodium carboxymethylcellulose solutions were also tested at the lower viscosities. Hyaluronic acid was added to one sample of synovial Fluid to increase its viscosity range and other synovial Fluid samples were digested enzymatically. Hyaluronidase digestion caused a significant increase in Friction Factor over the control samples whereas tryptic digestion had no consistent effect. No correlation between compliance of the cartilage and Frictional values was observed. Experimental prostheses with a compliant lining in the acetabular component were manufactured From a silicone ...
Study of the tribological properties of rolling element bearings under the effect of magnetic field | AVESİS
Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the magnetic field to the friction coefficient in the rolling element bearings which exists in electric motors. Design/methodology/approach To achieve this, the test rig was modified to adjust the density of the magnetic flux applied to the rolling ball element bearing. Experiments were carried out in the magnetic field from 0 to 7.5 mTesla at magnetic flux density range from 15, 40 and 65 N constant loads. Also, its rotary speed selected as 100, 200, 400, 800 to 1200 rpm, respectively. Findings In the majority of the experiments, it was observed that the magnetic field affected the friction coefficient. This influence reduced the friction coefficient in some experimental conditions and increased in some of them. Originality/value In the literature, there are very few studies on the effect of magnetic flux density to the friction coefficient in these rolling element bearings. It has become clear that more studies have been conducted ...
Changes in frictional coefficient with increased tendon surface tear?An experimental animal model -ORCA
Aim Surface tribological properties of a tendon in terms of coefficient of friction and lubrication mechanism are expected to change with the progression of surface tears which can affect the optimal function of the tendon. This study investigated whether coefficient of friction proportionally increases with the progression of a surface tear in a bovine tendon model. Methods The study was performed using a pin-on-glass tribometer and bovine tendon samples (n = 16) divided into 4 groups. One group of tendons had no surface tears and thus served as a control, whilst the other 3 groups comprised tendons with increasing severity of artificially-induced surface tears. The coefficient of friction and the lubrication mechanism of the four groups of samples were investigated, calculated and compared. Results Statistical analysis showed significant change in coefficient of friction between the control group and the group with minimal tear (p , 0.05) while no difference noted between the groups of ...
Characterization and reduction of MEMS sidewall friction using novel microtribometer and localized lubrication method |...
A novel microtribometer is developed to characterize microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) sidewall friction with high resolution. The design is based on a rotational grating displacement sensing mechanism, with which 1.2-nm sensing sensitivity can be achieved. Employing it, the adhesion force (1.85 N) and the coefficients of static (0.801) and kinetic (0.363) frictions on the sidewall of an as-fabricated MEMS device have been measured. Besides these, the whole process of stick-slip associated with the movement under friction, including the transition between static and kinetic frictional states, has also been clearly revealed. To reduce friction, a localized lubrication method is developed, with which liquid lubricant can be applied directly onto the desired region without affecting other components on the same device. From the experimental results, reduced values in adhesion force (1.23 N) and coefficients of friction (0.262 for static and 0.183 for kinetic) are obtained in the same MEMS ...

Since ancient times, lubricants have been used to reduce friction and wear problems of mechanical systems. However, nowadays, there is a constant effort to improve their performance through additives so that they can accomplish properly in this modern world. In that sense, in this study, it was proposed the use of Poly(ε-Caprolactone) (PCL) as a biodegradable additive in Castor oil. The effect that this additive has on the tribological properties of AISI 4140 steel/Al2O3 tribosystem was analyzed. For this purpose, PCL was dissolved in Castor oil at 65 °C for 15 minutes. Later, once the lubricant formulations got into room temperature, friction tests were conducted with a ball-on-disk configuration. Several experiments were systematically carried out in order to study the factors that could influence the performance of the tribological system, for instance: additive concentration, velocity, temperature, and wear track radius. The kinetic friction coefficient was used to analyze the results as ...
The Effect of Environmental Conditions on the Persistence of Common Lubricants on Skin for Cases of Sexual Assault...
The potential for lubricant trace evidence to be used as associative evidence is often overlooked in forensic investigations. Published studies in this area have focused on the identification of analytical techniques suitable for the detection of this evidence type. However, detection of trace lubricant is also dependent on the length of time it persists on skin and mucosal surfaces. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of environmental conditions on the persistence of oil- and glycerol-based lubricants on skin surfaces. Lubricated skin samples exposed to three different test environments were swabbed at regular intervals over a 24-h period. Compounds of interest were extracted from the swabs and analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The effect of glycerol derivatization prior to GC-MS analysis was also investigated. In general, oil-based lubricants persisted longer than glycerol-based. Persistence on skin was greatest in lower temperature conditions ...
JRC Publications Repository: Tribological Characterization of Surface Treated Titanium for Orthopaedic Joints
Most not cemented total hip replacements combine a titanium alloy stem, a CoCrMo femoral head and an uUltra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) acetabular cup. In spite of the suboptimal biocompatibility, the higher cost and some dfficulties in machining, CoCrMo alloy is often preferred to titanium alloys thanks to its outstanding tribological properties, higher hardness and elastic modulus. Therefore, nowadays most of the heads of hip prostheses use CoCrMo as bearing material. Biocompatibility problems of CoCrMo are often associated with a nickel content of up to 1% in this alloy. In some clinical situations such a nickel percentage cannot be neglected. The rationale of the present study was to investigate the effect of various surface treatments and combinations of treatments, such as electrochemical oxidation (anodization), laser surface treatments and barrel polishing, on the tribological properties of commercially pure grade 2 titanium. The goal was to find a surface treatment ...

LUBRICATION OF POLYETHER ETHER KETONE (PEEK) | [email protected]
Polyether Ether Ketone (PEEK), an engineering polymer with many advantages such as lightweight, high thermal stability, high strength coupled with toughness, has often been used as a substitute for metals in applications such as bearings, piston parts, pumps and even biomaterials. However, it shows high coefficient of friction (COF), in the range of 0.35 to 0.4 when it slides dry against a metal or other materials. High friction results in high wear rate and short component life when used in tribological applications, especially when contact stresses are high. This thesis seeks to solve the tribological problems of high friction and wear for PEEK by applying ultrathin (a few nanometer range) layers of perfluoropolyether (PFPE), Multiply-Alkylated Cyclopentane (MAC), 1-ethyl-3- methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([EMIM][BF4]) and 1-butyl-3- methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([BMIM][BF4]) lubricants on the surface of PEEK ...

Treatment is largely preventative and involves a stepwise approach. First, aggressive lubrication with artificial tears is recommended. Over-the-counter preservative-free artificial tears are used FROM four times per day to every hour while awake, combined with artificial tear ointment at bedtime. If there is no relief with aggressive lubrication, a therapeutic bandage soft contact lens may be used to prevent further erosions. This specially designed contact lens is left on the eye for weeks to months without removal in an attempt to prevent further corneal abrasions and promote better healing. Antibiotic drops are used to prevent infections secondary to long-term therapeutic contact lens use. Most patients recover completely with aggressive lubrication and/or placement of a bandage contact lens. For the few patients that remain symptomatic with RES, other therapeutic options remain, including anterior stromal puncture or superficial keratectomy, the latter performed with either a scalpel or a ...
Regulation of lubricin for functional cartilage tissue regeneration: a review | Biomaterials Research | Full Text
Lubricin is chondrocyte-secreted glycoprotein that primarily conducts boundary lubrication between joint surfaces. Besides its cytoprotective function and extracellular matrix (ECM) attachment, lubricin is recommended as a novel biotherapeutic protein that restore functional articular cartilage. Likewise, malfunction of lubrication in damaged articular cartilage caused by complex and multifaceted matter is a major concern in the field of cartilage tissue engineering. Although a noticeable progress has been made toward cartilage tissue regeneration through numerous approaches such as autologous chondrocyte implantation, osteochondral grafts, and microfracture technique, the functionality of engineered cartilage is a challenge for complete reconstruction of cartilage. Thus, delicate modulation of lubricin along with cell/scaffold application will expand the research on cartilage tissue engineering. In this review, we will discuss the empirical analysis of lubricin from fundamental interpretation to the
Effect of Sulfated Ash in Lubricant on the Performance and Durability of Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) - SAE International
In order to study and evaluate the effect of sulfated ash in different diesel engine lubricants on the performance and durability of diesel particulate filter (DPF), the two engine oils of API CI-4 and CJ-4 with different sulfated ash levels are used respectively in the durability tests of two DPF systems. Moreover, the pressure drop, ash loading and filtration efficiency of the two DPFs, deposits in the inlets and outlets of the DPFs, intake flow rate and fuel consumption rates of engine are measured and compared. The test results show that: Compared to the API CI-4 which has more ash in the formulation than the API CJ-4, the API CJ-4 shows a markedly excellent performance on the lower ash loading and longer service interval and life for DPF, as well as lower fuel consumption rate for the diesel engine with DPF ...

Low-friction Sliding Without Lubrication- Five Working Material Concepts and Tribological Challenges
Low-friction sliding without lubrication - five working material concepts and tribological challenges. The most fundamental rule for achieving low-friction sliding is to keep the area of contact small and the shear stress low. Of course, this beneficial combination is most often realised by using hard contacting materials and adding a lubricant. However, in some cases fluid lubricants are undesirable, and in others they may temporarily or locally be missing even when intended to be present.. In the absence of a lubricant, the combined requirements of small contact area and low shear stress poses contradicting demands on the contacting materials. A small contact area requires a hard material (i.e. hard to deform plastically) while a low shear stress requires a superficial layer that is easy to deform plastically.. Fortunately, there are several possible routes for materials to get around the contradictory demands. All such possibilities share a common fundament; during tribological contact the ...

General Archives - Animal Care Jobs
The lubrication system is one of the main systems in the machine, which is a series of tools ranging from oil sumps, oil pumps, oil pipelines, and lubricating oil pressures to reach parts that require lubrication. The lubricant can be defined as a substance that lies between two relatively moving surfaces in order to reduce friction between the surfaces. Based on its form, lubricating oil can be classified into two forms, namely liquid (liquid) or commonly called oil, and semi-solid (semi-solid) or commonly called fat. Liquid oil (lubricant) can be classified based on several things, namely mineral lubricants (pelicans) derived from petroleum. The best minerals are used for automotive, ship, and industrial diesel engine lubricants. It is recommended for those of you who have a vehicle either a motorcycle or a car, you should do maintenance such as changing the oil or check your vehicle regularly, especially the problem of oil changes. No need to worry about where to change the oil. Just contact ...
