[7] The wide range of responsibilities of the Department of Charities eventually proved unwieldy, and in 1966 the department was split into the Departments of Hospitals and Public Social Services. Several institutions were acquired or established, including Rancho Los Amigos Poor Farm (now Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center) in 1890, the General Hospital (now LAC+USC Medical Center) in 1932, two military hospitals, including the Harbor General Hospital (now Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, after World War II, Olive View Sanatorium (now Olive ...

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A nationwide measles outbreak has led health officials to quarantine dozens of people at two Los Angeles universities, officials said on Thursday. The quarantine affects the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA) and comes as the United States battles the highest number of measles cases since the country declared the virus eliminated in 2000. The United States has confirmed 695 cases of measles, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Wednesday. Many of the case occurred in the states of New York and Washington. California has confirmed 38 cases, state health officials have said. The people ordered quarantined at the two California campuses were exposed to measles and could not provide evidence they had been immunized against the disease, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said in a statement. The exploratory expedition led by Spanish Lieutenant Colonel Juan Bautista de Anza and 240 people from Culican, New Spain camped along the Los Angeles River in 1775 on their way to San Francisco. In 1781, a member of the Anza expedition, Jose Vicente Feliz, returned to help establish El Pueblo de la Reina de Los Angeles - or what we call today the City of Los Angeles. As much as the Los Angeles River helped to define a mysterious landscape for weary explorers in 1775 with water, food and respite, the certification of this portion of the Trail reveals the role of the Los Angeles River in the Citys history, and the complexity of its influence in its future. The Urban Waters Federal Partnership worked with the City of Los Angeles and the National Park Service certified this portion of the river as historical and marked the event celebrating along the River on October 15, 2015 with local officials, including the mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti. To highlight the connection between the natural ...

On April 8, 2009, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) notified officials from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (DPH) in California about a group of preschool teachers with nausea, dizziness, headache, and numbness and tingling of fingertips after consumption of brownies purchased 3 days before from a sidewalk vendor. To characterize the neurologic symptoms and determine whether these symptoms were associated with ingestion of the brownies, the police and health departments launched a collaborative investigation. This report summarizes the results of that investigation, which detected cannabinoids in a recovered sample of the brownies. Two patients sought medical attention, and one patients urine and serum tested positive for 11-nor-9-carboxy-delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC-COOH), a marijuana metabolite. The findings in this report demonstrate the utility of a collaborative investigation by public health and law enforcement. The findings also underscore the need to ...

Citing agency rules, Montiel said he couldnt comment on Motons current employee status. But in most cases like this, individuals are suspended during an investigation, he said.. County Supervisor Michael Antonovich said if the LAPDs allegations are true, Moton should face immediate termination.. It is very disconcerting for a DCFS employee - especially one who interacts directly with children - to be engaged in this type of criminal activity, Antonovich said in a statement. ...

What follows is a list of Los Angeles books. The criteria for the list is that many of the books are explicitly about Los Angeles, especially the architecture, geography or elements of local history or the plot takes place within the city. There are some writers from Los Angeles that do not write about the city or address the history and geography that are not included on the list below and their exclusion is not meant to leave them out, its more so because this list is about books that confront Los Angeles and Southern California in one way or another.. There are two poets in the list, John Murillo and Jayne Cortez who grew up in Los Angeles but then moved back east but their books are included in this list because a number of the poems in their books are about growing up in Southern California. In the case of Cortez, she only alludes to LA, but she is in this list because she grew up in Watts, went to Compton College, founded the Watts Repertory Theater and performed poetry in Watts during the ...

The East Coast Crips are not a specific street gang but an alliance of several different gang identities in Los Angeles County in three different jurisdictions. The creation of the Eastside 62 Street Crips around 1974, spawned the alliance now known as the East Coast Crips. Many of the gangs that joined the East Coast Crips alliance had already existed since the early 1970s under different names, such as the Q102 Towne Street Boys and the 69 Shack Boys so even though 62nd Street may be one of the first sets to put East Coast on it, they are not the oldest of the East Coast Car. Many of the East Coasts Crips sets also have a second alliance either with the Neighborhood Crips or Blocc Crips. The following is a list of all the East Coasts sets in Los Angeles County.. ...
Jones Day successfully defended Los Angeles County (the County), and obtained a favorable trial court judgment in its favor, against a potential $200 million loss in two related taxpayer actions. Both actions challenged the validity of a November 4, 2008 election (Measure U), whereby voters approved the Countys continued imposition of a utility user tax (UUT) in the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. Both actions claimed, albeit through different procedural postures, that the November 4 election was invalid because the Countys impartial analysis in Measure Us ballot materials failed to disclose certain information. The plaintiffs in both actions sought refund of all UUT paid since the date of the election based on the allegedly misleading ballot materials. The trial court had rejected every one of the plaintiffs arguments, finding the Countys ballot materials for Measure U were not misleading and comported with all applicable law; it also found the plaintiffs in one action were

The MWD increased the fluoride levels in the water it supplies to Los Angeles and other Southern California cities from between 0.1 and 0.4 parts per million to between 0.7 and 0.8 parts per million.. The new level of fluoride is considered to be the optimal amount for dental health by both the California Department of Public Health and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Tim Collins, dental director for the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services.. South Park is a district in southwestern Downtown Los Angeles, California. The original/other South Park neighborhood of Los Angeles is located near the intersection of 51st Street and Avalon Boulevard in South Los Angeles. Due to redevelopment and gentrification since 2003, the name was co-opted and now also refers to the Downtown district. The new South Park district is the location of the Los Angeles Convention Center, the Staples Center, the "L.A. Live" entertainment complex and the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising or FIDM. In 2007, after a 57-year absence, Ralphs Supermarket returned to the neighborhood, opening an upscale Ralphs Fresh Fare store. In the beginning of summer 2012, developers broke ground on a dual-hotel featuring Courtyard by Marriott and Residence Inn, and is expected to be open by the summer of 2014. South Park is bounded by the Harbor Freeway (SR 110) on the west, the Santa Monica Freeway (I-10) on the south, Main Street on the east, and Eighth
The Los Angeles City Clerk certified a petition titled City of Los Angeles Public Health Protection Act that requires the Los Angeles City Council to establish its own Public Health Department. The City can create the department by way of an ordinance or place the issue before voters possibly in June 2014.If approved, the City would need to terminate its agreement with Los Angeles County Public Health and start its own department within 120 days. The new City department would be prohibited from contracting with LA County Public Health for any service or surveillance work thereby creating duplicative services. Passage of the proposed initiative would drastically alter the scope of public health services provided by the County for the city and the county, and would result in significant loss of revenue, jobs and workload for the County. The fiscal impact could necessitate the closure of public health clinics, along with reductions in clinical care and prevention services provided for communicable ...

This study investigates the consumption of electricity and natural gas for building operations for several categories of residential and non-residential buildings. In this study, we analyzed electricity and natural gas consumption data from utility companies operating in Los Angeles County. Utility data are used to build an energy database to study energy consumption in buildings, based on the analysis of almost 450,000 Energy Analysis Zones, created from the overlap of various levels of spatial aggregation in the database. The energy database integrates additional data on the building stock, climate zones, geomorphological data, and sociodemographics collected from multiple sources. Researchers developed statistical and spatial analysis of energy consumption data and estimated linear regression models to predict energy consumption in buildings. TUESDAY, Oct. 9, 2018 (HealthDay News) - An outbreak of flea-borne typhus in Los Angeles County has so far resulted in 57 cases, including 20 in Pasadena and nine in downtown Los Angeles, public health officials say.. Symptoms of the bacterial disease include high fever, chills, headache, body aches, and rash.. Typhus fever is a disease that can cause serious complications requiring lengthy hospitalization, and rarely, death, said Ying-Ying Goh, M.D., Pasadenas health officer, CNN reported. She advised residents to take precautions to prevent fleas in and around their homes, such as keeping yards free of debris and well trimmed, not leaving pet food outdoors, not giving food or water to wild animals, keeping garbage containers tightly covered, sealing crawlspaces under the home, and treating pets regularly with flea control products.. Since the disease is spread by fleas, it is possible that endemic typhus could be transmitted year-round. Right now, its hard to speculate on why we are ...
Long Beach City Health Officer, Dr. Anissa Davis, ordered all coastal swimming areas in Long Beach to temporarily close for water contact due to a sewage spill. State law requires the temporary closure and posting of beaches when spills occur, out of an abundance of caution, until the water quality meets State requirements.. According to a report received earlier this morning, from Los Angeles County Department of Sanitation, approximately 50,000 gallons of sewage was discharged into the Los Cerritos Channel on December 26. The sewage spill occurred in the City of Long Beach. The spill was caused by a pump station failure due to a loss of power. The City of Long Beach Health Departments recreational water quality health inspection team is monitoring water quality along the coast. Water monitoring will continue until results comply with State water quality standards.. Long Beach has approximately seven miles of public beach. But LaRouche had vowed on Oct. 9 to make the imposition of Schwarzenegger on California a Pyrrhic victory for Cheney and Shultz; it is swinging Democratic activists and leaders to LaRouche for his effective mobilization in California, and helping his drive to get Cheney ousted from the Bush Administration. The on the ground story of the Recall, is the message to Democrats in California and nationally that an extraordinary mobilization by the LaRouche Youth Movement (LYM) in the Los Angeles area, turned a foregone-conclusion 60-40% vote to recall Governor Davis in Los Angeles County, into a final 51-49% defeat of the Recall (see story, page 70). A similar LYM mobilization in San Francisco and Oakland made an already anti-Recall public sentiment into an 80-20% landslide there. The dramatic activation of both college students and trade unions in the Los Angeles area by the LYM was key in this victory. The states press and the national media largely ignored what the LYM was doing with hundreds ...
Yvette Vickers, the early actress, model and Playboy playmate whose body was found reportedly mummified in her Los Angeles home, died of heart failure, the coroners office said Saturday.. Vickers, who would have been 82 when her body was found, died of natural causes due to arterial sclerotic cardiovascular disease, or heart disease caused by a hardening of the arteries, said Joyce Kato, an investigator with the Los Angeles County coroners department.. The department did not make a determination on when she died.. Vickers body appears to have remained undiscovered for close to a year, police said. A neighbor who had noticed cobwebs in Vickers mailbox entered the home and discovered her body on April 27. The inside of the Westwanda Drive home in the Benedict Canyon neighborhood of Los Angeles was in disrepair and it was hard to move through the rooms because boxes containing what appeared to be clothes, junk mail and letters formed barriers, said the neighbor, Susan Savage. Vickers body ...

How the Impacts of Urbanization Are Being Addressed in the Los Angeles River Watershed. Due to an increased interest and concern about the Los Angeles urban environment, studies have begun to focus on the local water cycle and the impact of impervious land on the Los Angeles River. Findings from initial studies indicate that during the 1990s, - approximately half of the rain that fell in the watershed turned into runoff (which flowed to the ocean). Prior to 1930, less than 10 percent of the rain turned into runoff leaving 95 percent of the runoff to infiltrate into the subsurface. As the region continues to develop, (approximately 60 percent is currently urbanized) the opportunities for rainfall to naturally infiltrate into the groundwater aquifers are reduced. With an ever-increasing population and even greater water demands, greater efforts to capture and direct storm water runoff for recharge purposes instead of ocean water discharge makes sense. This paper describes two efforts by various

Federal officials say polluting companies at a former landfill in Los Angeles County will pay $17 million to clean up toxic waste.. The site in Monterey Park belonged to Operating Industries Incorporated. The federal Environmental Protection Agency has been investigating who used it and what they dumped there.. In this piece of the settlement, federal officials went after 275 companies that sent hazardous waste to the dump between the 1940s and the 1980s. So far, 1,100 companies have paid $600 million toward cleanup in Monterey Park.. EPA designated the 190-acre property a Superfund site 25 years ago. Over time, the waste has polluted air, leached into groundwater and created fire hazards near the people who live there.. Since the 1990s, federal and local authorities have capped parcels of land with clay to keep gases in and rainwater out. Theyve also planted native grasses on top of the clay to help the landfill site blend in with surrounding areas.. Work continues on the northern part of the ...
