en] The present study was conducted to validate an adaptation of the Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure (IRAP) as an indirect latency-based measure of sexual orientation. Furthermore, reliability and criterion validity of the IRAP were compared to two established indirect measures of sexual orientation: a Choice Reaction Time task (CRT) and a Viewing Time (VT) task. A sample of 87 heterosexual and 35 gay men completed all three indirect measures in an online study. The IRAP and the VT predicted sexual orientation nearly perfectly. Both measures also showed a considerable amount of convergent validity. Reliabilities (internal consistencies) reached satisfactory levels. In contrast, the CRT did not tap into sexual orientation in the present study. In sum, the VT measure performed best, with the IRAP showing only slightly lower reliability and criterion validity, whereas the CRT did not yield any evidence of reliability or criterion validity in the present research. The results were discussed ...

For instance, one part of the medical assessment procedure referred to my ability to squat and kneel. I can kneel and get up again only with difficulty because of pain in my knees. I demonstrated at that assessment that I could only kneel and get up by leaning on the furniture and not taking all the weight on my knees. I also said I could not squat or sit cross legged at all. In the report I was stated as having no problems with these movements ...

118 Loa loa The vector for Loa loa filariasis are flies from two species of the genus Chrysops, C. silacea and C. dimidiata. During a blood meal, an infected fly (genus Chrysops, day-biting flies) introduces filarial larvae onto the skin of the human host, where they penetrate into the bite wound. The larvae develop into adults that commonly reside in subcutaneous tissue but can migrate into spinal fluids, urine, and sputum. During the day they are found in peripheral blood, but during the noncirculation phase, they are found in the lungs. The fly ingests microfilariae during a blood meal, which migrate to the thoracic muscles and develop into infective larvae. They migrate to the flys proboscis and can infect another human when the fly takes a blood meal. ...

An epidemic illness characterized by head nodding associated with onchocerciasis has been described in eastern Africa since the early 1960s; we summarize published reports and recent studies. Onset of nodding occurs in previously healthy 5-15-year-old children and is often triggered by eating or cold temperatures and accompanied by cognitive impairment. Its incidence has increased in Uganda and South Sudan over the past 10 years. Four case-control studies identified modest and inconsistent associations. There were nonspecific lesions seen by magnetic resonance imaging, no cerebrospinal fluid inflammation, and markedly abnormal electroencephalography results. Nodding episodes are atonic seizures. Testing has failed to demonstrate associations with trypanosomiasis, cysticercosis, loiasis, lymphatic filariasis, cerebral malaria, measles, prion disease, or novel pathogens; or deficiencies of folate, cobalamin, pyridoxine, retinol, or zinc; or toxicity from mercury, copper, or homocysteine. Prof. Steckl of the NanoLab and Prof. Giovanni Pauletti of the UC College of Pharmacy were awarded a Gates Foundation Grand Challenges Grant to develop an Ultra-Low-Cost Loa Loa Paper Diagnostic Device. The project will investigate the feasability of paper-based urine tests for the rapid non-invasive detection of the filarial roundworm Loa loa, which causes the painful skin and eye disease loaisis, commonly found in western and central Africa. Current diagnostic approaches are invasive, involving visual detection of larvae in tissue or blood samples. The approach here utilizes the potential effect of parasite-released hormones found in the urine of infected individuals on the viscosity of animal blood spotted onto filter paper. The diagnostic test will be easy to perform and is projected to be inexpensive to manufacture ...
Dirk Sch nberger, 05 Mar 2001. Minahan claims it as neither the flag of the city of New Calabar nor the city of Calabar - it is claimed to be the flag of an aspirant nation (as supposedly are all the flags in Minahans book)- one whose aspirations cover an area in the Nigerian states of Cross River and Akwa Ibom.. As the symbol of an aspirant, separatist, nationalist movement, it is likely that the flag has no official recognition. Minahan specifically states that the region of Calabar has no official status.. Finally, as I warned when I started posting the material from Minahan, he does not cite his sources for most of his flag data, and sometimes it is difficult to assess the accuracy of that data ...

As of 2009, loiasis is endemic to 11 countries, all in western or central Africa, and an estimated 12-13 million people have the disease. The highest incidence is seen in Cameroon, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Nigeria, Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea. The rates of Loa loa infection are lower but it is still present in and Angola, Benin, Chad and Uganda. The disease was once endemic to the western African countries of Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Ivory Coast and Mali but has since disappeared.[10]. Throughout Loa loa-endemic regions, infection rates vary from 9 to 70 percent of the population.[3] Areas at high risk of severe adverse reactions to mass treatment (with Ivermectin) are at present determined by the prevalence in a population of ,20% microfilaremia, which has been recently shown in eastern Cameroon (2007 study), for example, among other locales in the region.[10]. Endemicity is closely linked to the habitats of the two known human loiasis ...

The objectives of this study were to identify the physical features of the land in a drainage district which influence benefits accruing from drainage improvements, and to formulate a method for distributing assessments based upon the relative importance of these physical features. The significant physical features discovered in the study were: (1) the distance from the tract of land to the main drain, (2) the distance from the tract of land to the main outlet, and (3) the permeability of the soil on the tract of land. An equation was developed to determine the assessment for any tract: An = 1,4845 - 0,3476 (Ln/L*) - 0.4680 (Dn/D*) - 0.4434 (Kn/K*). The equation provides a procedure and a computer program to equitably distribute drainage assessments with a savings in labor and time in the preparation of the assessment roll. This unbiased procedure should reduce the present objection of landowners of unfair assessments based upon p.ersona1 judgment. Although the present equation is limited to the ...

The field of toxicology adopted the threshold dose response in the early decades of the 20th century. The model was rapidly incorporated into governmental regulatory assessment procedures and became a central feature of chemical evaluation and assessment. The toxicological community never validated the capacity of this model to make accurate predictions throughout the remainder of the 20th century. A series of recent investigations have demonstrated that the threshold and linear dose response model failed to make accurate predictions in the low dose zone ...
Since biotech companies acquire patents on their GM crops, they can legally bar anyone else from conducting research for safety assessments. Their own industry "research," which is known to be falsified, is usually the only information used by FDA to give the green light to GMO crops.. "The results demand immediate testing along with rigorous scientific standards to assure such testing is objective and replicable. Its unbelievable such standards for testing do not already exist. The safety of our food supply demands that science deliver such modern scientific standards for approval of GMOs," said Dr. Ayyadurai.. With genetically modified foods, "a small and single GM creates large and systemic perturbations to molecular systems equilibria," as Dr. Ayyadurai explains in his papers abstract.. For this reason, the safety assessment procedure for GMO crops is woefully inadequate. The biotech industry has maintained that direct modification of a plants genetic material is a harmless extension ...

Arent worms icky (Unless you are a 4 year old boy or a "worm-whisperer", you probably wont disagree with that statement)? They have no eyes, no legs, no arms and theyre always slimy! Imagine how much it would stink if there were worms that lived underneath your skin… Well, imagine no more! The loa loa is here for you! Or, more specifically, the fluids you have in and under your skin. Native to West Africa, these creepy, translucent worms start off as eggs, given to you by a bite from either a mango fly (Cordylobia anthropophaga) or a deerfly (from the Chrysops genus). When these eggs hatch, the worms (which are only 5-20 mm. (0.2-0.79 inches) long) follow the blood-stream to find food, only moving during the day. They only move during the day because [most] flies only come out during the daytime; if a fly bit you, this would give the loa loa the opportunity to allow the fly to swallow its eggs, thereby propagating the species. At night-time, they rest in the lungs. While this would already ...

Nature is endless fascinating and often beautiful, but crikey its cruel. This is one of the things that led me away from religion. Why would an omnipotent, omniscient creator make so much pain and suffering such a large part of most creatures lives, when he could easily have set it up differently? Every day millions, maybe billions, of creatures are eaten alive by other creatures. Throw in ichneumon wasps, loa loa worms, ebola…and I honestly dont see why everyone doesnt realize such a creator would necessarily be, you know, evil.. ...
Controls: Best practice requires that product is received following an agreed, signed specification. Generally, the agreed specification ensures that products meet safety and quality standards. It demands that goods meet certain criteria in regards to shelf life, adequate labelling, and intact packaging. Its important to take the time to fully understand the inherent risks of all ingredients, especially when trading through several companies. Bear in mind that if a manufacturer is audited, either by a recognised third party or by your company to satisfy the supplier, it does not pose a risk to you. If you are under investigation, initial rapid allergen testing on intake will lessen the risk. If you are aware of what a potential contaminant is, sending it to a lab for a formal result will cover due diligence defence. As a part of risk assessment procedure, its imperative to elect a designated person responsible for horizon scanning, searching for past and current risks. These risks should be ...

Methylation refers to the controlled transfer of a methyl group, made up of a carbon atom and three hydrogen atoms, abbreviated CH3. Such movement of carbon atoms goes on in every cell and tissue of the body. Methylation is an absolute requirement for immunity, fertility, and protection against birth defects, accelerated aging and susceptibility to cancer.
