Lithuania is the southernmost of the Baltic countries. It is bounded on the north by Latvia, on the east and southeast by Belarus, and on the southwest by the Russian Kaliningrad area and by Poland. The hills in the extreme east of the country give way to the flat expanses of the central lowlands, rounded off by a long belt of sand dunes along Baltic coast. Peoples of the Baltic settled in present-day Lithuania from the 7th to the 2nd century BC. Lithuania was united by Mindaugas in 1236, and seventeen years later Mindaugas was crowned the first king of Lithuania. Lithuania was able to withstand attacks from the Teutonic Knights and entered into a personal union with Poland instead 1385. Al this time the Lithuanians also converted to Christianity, the last people in Europe to do so. Lithuanian lands were united under MINDAUGAS in 1236; over the next century, through alliances and conquest, Lithuania extended its territory to include most of present-day Belarus and Ukraine. By the end of the 14th century Lithuania was the largest state in Europe. An alliance with Poland in 1386 led the two countries into a union through the person of a common ruler. In 1569, Lithuania and Poland formally united into a single dual state, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. This entity survived until 1795 when its remnants were partitioned by surrounding countries. Lithuania regained its independence following World War I but was annexed by the USSR in 1940 - an action never recognized by the US and many other countries. On 11 March 1990, Lithuania became the first of the Soviet republics to declare its independence, but Moscow did not recognize this proclamation until September of 1991 (following the abortive coup in Moscow). The last Russian troops withdrew in 1993. Lithuania subsequently ...

Lithuania is an EU member state which joined the Eurozone by adopting the euro on 1 January 2015. This made it the last of the three Baltic states to adopt the euro, after Estonia (2011) and Latvia (2014). Before then, its currency, the litas, was pegged to the euro at 3.4528 litas to 1 euro. All members of the European Union, except Denmark and the UK, are required by treaty to join the euro once certain economic criteria have been met. The Lithuanian litas participated in ERM II since 28 June 2004, and was pegged to the euro at a rate of 3.45280 litai = €1. Lithuania originally set 1 January 2007 as their target date for joining the euro, and in March 2006 requested that the European Commission and the European Central Bank conduct an assessment on their readiness to adopt the currency. The Commissions report found that while Lithuania met four of the five criteria, their average annual inflation was 2.7%, exceeding the limit of 2.6%. As a result, the Commission concluded that there should ...

The aim of the study was to evaluate the dietary intake of a Lithuanian rural population and to assess the relationship between diet and dyslipidemias. Material and Methods. A cross-sectional health survey was carried out in 5 municipalities of Lithuania in 2007. The random sample was obtained from lists of 25- to 64-year-old inhabitants registered at primary health care centers (n=1739). The food frequency questionnaire and 24-hour recall was used for the evaluation of nutrition habits. The levels of serum lipids were determined using enzymatic methods. Euthanasia might be needed for poor people who cannot access palliative care, the new Lithuanian Health Minister has suggested. Rimantė Šalaševičiūtė was sworn earlier this month, but already she has made waves by backing an open discussion of the legalisation of euthanasia.. Without making any specific proposals, she told local media that Lithuania was not a welfare state with palliative care available for all and that euthanasia might be an option for people who did not want to torment relatives with the spectacle of their suffering.. The minister has also raised the idea of euthanasia for children. She noted that this option had been approved for Belgian children after a long public debate. It was an option which might be appropriate in Lithuania as well after public debate.. Ms Šalaševičiūtė will face an uphill battle in her campaign to introduce Lithuanians to euthanasia. Many doctors and the Catholic Church oppose it. Dr Andrius Narbekovas, who is both a priest and a doctor, ...

In 1579, Vilnius University, an important scientific and education centre of the European scale, was opened. In the 16th century, Lithuania adopted its First, Second and Third Statutes. Not only the Statutes were the backbone of the legislative system of the country, they had a major impact on legislation of other European states of the time. Despite losing its independence, Lithuania managed to retain its Third Statute in effect for as many as 250 years, which was instrumental in preservation of national and civic self-awareness of the public. The Constitution of Poland-Lithuania together with the French Constitution, both adopted in 1791, were the first constitutions in Europe (Polish-Lithuanian constitution was adopted few months earlier).

The most popular destination in Lithuania is the capital Vilnius. With just over 550,000 inhabitants, it is the countrys largest city and economic and cultural center. Although Lithuania has long been part of the Soviet Union, with what it meant for architecture in most Eastern European cities, Vilnius is a picturesque city with well-preserved ancient buildings characterized by its many, very beautiful and unique Catholic churches and cathedrals. After the independence of Russia and the entry into the EU, many modern houses have been built, the business district Šnipiškės gives the city an almost futuristic skyline with many tall skyscrapers in glass and metal. An example is the Europa tower, which is the Baltics tallest skyscraper with its 149 meters. Šnipiškės in general and the Europa tower in particular are for many Lithuanians a symbol of the countrys modern history and future,. If you want to experience Vilnius best side, you should visit the Old Town, where many historical ...

VILNIUS, Lithuania - As soon as Google Maps Street View was rolled out in Lithuania earlier this year, tax authorities were ready. Inspectors used the free Internet program for a virtual cruise around the streets of some of the Baltic countrys big cities, uncovering dozens of alleged tax violations involving housing construction and property sales. They identified 100 homeowners and 30 construction companies as suspected tax dodgers thanks to Street View, Darius Buta, spokesman for the State Tax Inspectorate, said Wednesday. Lithuanian officials said they were unaware of any other country where revenue collectors had used Googles Street View. Still, tax authorities across the world are turning to high-resolution maps, online databases, and social media in a bid to catch out cheats.

There is still a lot to do in this country for Human Rights Organizations like fighting Racism, antisemitism, Homophobia and promoting education and free information as the corner stone of democracy for a member-State of the European Union.. Mr. Plasseraud reminded important criticisms which could be made in Lithuania and that he does not share despite they are true in our opinion: The obliteration of the participation of Lithuanian militias in Pogroms and Holocaust, the current authorization of Nazi Parades and the creation of a new concept which put in equivalence of the Holocaust and the suffering of people under communist dictatorship whose consequence is the arbitrary second ranking of the Holocaust. This concept is named double Genocide and made a mathematical equality between events, which has no sense in History. In fact this concept aims to obliterate or reduce one of the two components of the equation, which is clearly the Holocaust as this can be seen in Lithuania.. As a matter of ...

After the baptism in 1252 and coronation of King Mindaugas in 1253, Lithuania was recognized as a Christian state until 1260, when Mindaugas supported an uprising in Courland and (according to the German order) renounced Christianity. Up until 1387,[citation needed] Lithuanian nobles professed their own religion, which was polytheistic. Ethnic Lithuanians were very dedicated to their faith. The pagan beliefs needed to be deeply entrenched to survive strong pressure from missionaries and foreign powers. Until the 17th century there were relics of old faith reported by counter-reformation active Jesuit priests, like feeding žaltys with milk or bringing food to graves of ancestors.. The lands of modern-day Belarus and Ukraine, as well as local dukes (princes) in these regions, were firmly Orthodox Christian (Greek Catholic after the Union of Brest), though. While pagan beliefs in Lithuania were strong enough to survive centuries of pressure from military orders and missionaries, they did ...
