Ligustrum japonicum - Japanese Privet tree 10/12cm girth is available to buy online, or for sale at our tree nursery in Essex near London - Ligustrum japonicum - Japanese Privet tree. Plant Information: Size: 10/12cms girth standard.
Although tolerant of tight clipping, Japanese Privet is quite attractive when allowed to retain its natural multi-stemmed form, making it ideal for use in shrubbery borders and other informal settings. It makes a nice specimen in any landscape where a small dark tree is needed. Planted close together on about 10 to 15-foot centers, ligustrum will form a canopy over a pedestrian walkway but will not grow tall or wide enough for canopy closure over a street or parking lot. The tree looks best in a landscape setting with a low groundcover planted around its base. Japanese Privet grows in full sun or partial shade and is tolerant of a wide range of soil types, including calcarious clay as long as water is not allowed to stand in the root zone. Plants grow quickly while young but slow with age. Although it can withstand drought, Japanese Privet is not especially salt-tolerant and will require protection from direct salt spray. If you decide to use this plant as a clipped hedge, be sure that the top ...

It is not known with certainty the origin of the genus name, but the general opinion is that it comes from the Latin word ligare which means to bind, because young branches can be used for this purpose, given the flexibility they show. Smaller than the privet, its common name refers to its place of origin, Japan. It was introduced in crops in Europe by 1845 and to adapt well spread rapidly throughout the peninsula, sitting in Seville primarily as a tree for the layout of streets and avenues. Related to the European Ligustrum vulgare, its fruits, known as henna or privet, have been used since ancient times as a dye for tattooing or eye makeup for women. To this end the fruit is pounded until they become a fine powder. In relation to this practice, the tree is cited by an author who was in Seville at the time when the city was still the gates of the Indies, Miguel de Cervantes. He does specifically in his most famous work, El Quijote: after telling one of many adventures in which the Ingenious ...

The hedging is always popular, especially for those customers who have urban or suburban gardens, because of its resilience to pollution. This durability of Privet is also seen in its ability to grow in all areas, including coastal, as long as your garden is not in a wet site, as the hedging will struggle. Also please note that if you do live in a coastal location, there is a possibility the hedging may defoliate a bit in winter.. The Privet (if preferred) will grow tall, permitting it is trimmed twice a year, at the start of June and at the end of September, trimming at these times will ensure you wont cut any fresh growing shoots. In one year, the Privet will grow from 20cm - 40cm, depending on factors like watering and nutrients, placing it into the medium growing hedge category.. We offer Privet from 15cm to 200 cm tall, meaning you have the choice to affordably grow the hedging or receive it fully-grown and instantly have the benefits of its privacy, wind protection, and resistance to ...

Prunella vulgaris [also known as self-heal] is a perennial plant commonly found in China, the British Isles, Europe, and North America. In herbal literature, P. vulgaris has been described as a hot water infusion to treat sores in the mouth and throat, as an astringent for internal and external purposes, as a crude anti-cancer drug, and as a herbal remedy to lower high blood pressure, says Song Lee, one of the researchers on the study. Lee and his colleagues extracted a lignin-carbohydrate compound from the plant, which was incorporated into a topical cream and tested on mice and guinea pigs with experimental herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2) infections. Guinea pigs receiving the lignin-carbohydrate complex cream treatment showed a significant reduction in skin lesions compared to those that received no treatment. Also known as thunder tree, Ligustrum is his name in Latin and refers to ligare, which means to bind, while lucidum means glossy, shiny, alluding to the brightness of its leaves. Originally from China, it was introduced in the gardens of Europe in the Middle Ages, perhaps because of the beauty and fragrance of its small but showy flowers. In Sevilla, like in other cities, it was abundant as street tree, due to its high resistance to atmospheric pollution. In China its wood is known as white wax wood and is commonly used to make stilts and martial arts weapons. Its fruits are used as a medicinal remedy and as a tonic yin. Its roasted seeds have been used as a substitute for coffee. ...

J.B. Edmond Undergraduate Student Paper Competition. The Acidification of Hardwood Bark for the Production of Acid-loving Nursery Crops. Mark Wilson*, Edward Bush, Daniel Wells, and Jeff Beasley; LSU AgCenter SPESS, 137 J.C. Miller Hall, Baton Rouge, LA 70803. This study was an evaluation of an industrial sulfur by-product for use as an agriculture acidifier and the use of hardwood bark as a soilless growing media. The objective was to determine the influence of acid-forming fertilizers on pH of hardwood bark media and biomass accumulation. Gardenia jasminoides, an acid-loving plant, and Ligustrum japonicum having a wide pH tolerance range were used in this study. There were 14 acidifying treatments with five replications of each. Treatments included combinations of iron sulfate, sulfur, acidifying by-product, lime, gypsum, and Epsom salt. Two dependent variables were observed: pH and EC of medium, and plant growth. Leachate analysis established pH and EC every 4 weeks, and growth indexes were ...
Around 6:24pm, a large owl (female?) flew from the direction of our back porch (from the Orchid Branch ?, from the Water Dish? ) and landed on the Birdfeeder Branch. After sitting for 15 seconds or so, she(?) made a hunting dive onto the roof of the carport to the north. A half minute later, she flew southward through the Gap, down our driveway, to a perch in the ligustrum or crepe myrtle. A half minute later, she (?) flew north around the east side of the shop, with one swerve in flight, in the neighborhood of the NestBox Tree (possibly a hunting dive). A minute later (6:30pm) , a small owl (male?) flew south from the east side of the shop, and landed on the Stub Branch, overlooking the compost pile. A few seconds later, a second, larger owl (female?) flew south through the Gap to the Prius Branch. Both owls were visible at the same time, for a minute or two, before the larger owl left the Prius Branch and flew south and east, possibly towards the Art Park or to our front yard. At this point, ...

This months publication date of The Loop coincides with the traditional advice that the best date for trimming box topiary is Derby day, 1st of June. The race itself wont be run this year but perhaps you can celebrate it by cutting any box topiary in your garden. I have got 25 box balls to cut in my front garden plus one in a pot on the patio. Finding the time to do it on the right day may not be a problem just now but the amount of sunshine we have been getting lately may be because the advice is to …cut box only on a cloudy day; doing this reduces the risk of cut leaves going brown on the edges. You can buy special shears for topiary or an electric cutter but I find that sharp shears (held upside down for a curved shape) get the most satisfying result. I enjoy doing it. Box, of course, is not the only hedge that needs cutting. Privet should be cut several times a year. Cupressus only once a year and August is a good time for doing it. However hard you try to keep them under control hedges ...

As I move forward, repairing winters destruction, and attempt to make sense of the bare ground where the privet used to be I hadnt really stopped to notice what was blooming, didnt have time! And thats why I love Garden Bloggers Bloomday. Its a reason to stop and smell the flowers, and photograph them. These posts also act a garden clock, reminding me if the garden is early, late, or just right. Heres how this April is shaping up ...
