A thunderstorm, also known as an electrical storm or a lightning storm, is a storm characterized by the presence of lightning and its acoustic effect on the Earths atmosphere, known as thunder.[1] Relatively weak thunderstorms are sometimes called thundershowers.[2] Thunderstorms occur in a type of cloud known as a cumulonimbus. They are usually accompanied by strong winds, and often produce heavy rain and sometimes snow, sleet, or hail, but some thunderstorms produce little precipitation or no precipitation at all. Thunderstorms may line up in a series or become a rainband, known as a squall line. Strong or severe thunderstorms include some of the most dangerous weather phenomena, including large hail, strong winds, and tornadoes. Some of the most persistent severe thunderstorms, known as supercells, rotate as do cyclones. While most thunderstorms move with the mean wind flow through the layer of the troposphere that they occupy, vertical wind shear sometimes causes a deviation in their course ...

The term Single Cell Thunderstorm as it applies to the area of the weather can be defined as This type of thunderstorm develops in weak vertical wind shear environments. On a hodograph, this would appear as a closely grouped set of random dots around the center of the graph. They are characterized by a single updraft core and a single downdraft that descends into the same area as the updraft. The downdraft and its outflow boundary then cut off the thunderstorm inflow. This causes the updraft and the thunderstorm to dissipate. Single cell thunderstorms are short-lived. They only last about 1/2 hour to an hour. These thunderstorms will occasionally become severe (3/4 inch hail, wind gusts in the excess of 58 miles an hour, or a tornado), but only briefly. In this case, they are called Pulse Severe Thunderstorms. . ...
A severe thunderstorm WATCH means BE PREPARED. A severe thunderstorm WARNING means TAKE ACTION. If there is a severe thunderstorm watch, stay informed and be ready to act, because severe thunderstorms are possible. If there is a severe thunderstorm warning, take shelter in a strong building, and get out of mobile homes that can blow over in high winds. Severe weather is occurring or will shortly. http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/thunderstorm/ww.shtml #SpringSafety. Twitter ...
Thunderstorms are very spectacular super-long-range discharge processes in the atmosphere, which can cause tremendous damage in an instant, often leading to casualties, resulting in damage to buildings, power supply systems, communication equipment and forest fires, causing major economic losses. In order to successfully predict thunderstorms, and many economic losses can be avoided. Using the observation data of two county stations in Yimeng County and Zhangwu County from June to August 2009-2015, 40 typical thunderstorm weather processes were selected, and 15 convective parameters related to thunderstorm activities were calculated. After statistical analysis, there are seven convective parameters with significant correlation with thunderstorm activity: convective affective potential energy (CAPE), 850 hPa specific humidity, 700 hPa specific humidity, 850 hPa false equivalent temperature, maximum rising speed, strong weather threat index (SWEAT) and zero degree height (ZH), and the
Astronomers using the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope in orbit above the Earth have detected beams of antimatter produced above terrestrial thunderstorms, a phenomenon never seen before. They believe the antimatter particles were formed in aterrestrial gamma-ray flash (TGF), a brief burst associated with lightning and produced inside thunderstorms. "These signals are the first direct evidence that thunderstorms make antimatter particle beams," said Michael Briggs, from Fermis Gamma-ray Burst Monitor team. He presented the findings on Monday at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Seattle.. Although Fermi is designed to observe high-energy events in the universe, its also providing valuable insights into Earthbound TGF phenomena. The satellite has identified 130 TGFs since its launch in 2008. "In orbit for less than three years, the Fermi mission has proven to be an amazing tool to probe the universe. Now we learn that it can discover mysteries much, much closer to home," said Ilana ...
For all you people complaining about maybe there WERE more thunderstorms back then for this reason and that reason and the other reason, thats really not what Randall is going for. I believe his point is that thunderstorms are a bigger deal for kids, so we remember them more vividly. Back in the day, wed have to get raincoats and umbrellas and recess was inside and lightning would scare us and thunderstorms were a big deal! But now, unless the power goes out or you have to travel in it, most thunderstorms could pass by without the average adult even noticing, since most of us work indoors. This means that not only do we experience them less, but they affect us less as well. Therefore, it seems like there were more big storms when we were kids ...

A severe thunderstorm warning issued for parts of Los Angeles County has expired, but forecasters say showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to continue into Wednesday.
RainDance Technologies, Inc., the Digital Biology™ Company, today announced new placements of its ThunderStorm™ System at the LIGAN-Personalized Medicine Equipment of Excellence at the Pasteur Institute of Lille in France and CEINGE Biotecnologie Avanzate in Naples, Italy. The ThunderStorm System is a fully automated high-throughput targeted sequencing solution that enables researchers to determine all variation contained in any region of the genome faster and easier than ever before.
The center of what used to be subtropical storm Alberto is moving farther away, and will arrive in western Kentucky before daybreak. However, outer tropical showers and thunderstorms will continue to plague the region every now and again.. Additional showers and thunderstorms will develop throughout the course of Wednesday with sunshine mixed in-between the raindrops. Given the saturated nature of the soil, isolated flooding is still a concern.. Starting Thursday, all eyes will shift toward the northwest and the U.S. High Plains. The reason is a couple clusters of thunderstorms that will run into our area from the northwest. These storms will likely be limited to the afternoon and early night hours, with less coverage compared to more recent days. The same can be expected Friday.. This weekend may turn out 50/50. A relatively quiet Saturday in the thunderstorm department will give way to yet another round of storms arriving from the Plains.. Overall, next week looks to be a lot quieter. Stay safe ...

The stretch of active weather continued this week, with the focus shifting into Norfolk County on Wednesday. Much of the county, especially central sections, was hit by thunderstorms with very heavy rain and hail causing localized flooding and sharp, yet brief, rises on the Neponset River. Some widespread light rain fell on the 4th giving around ¼ inch to the region. Weekly rainfall throughout the county averaged between 1 and 2 inches with a bit more in the far north due to continued frequent thunderstorm activity in this area. With the antecedent dry conditions, and the very intense yet brief duration of this rainfall, this precipitation simply halted any further drying, with the possible exception of the far north (Needham and Dover) which has received repeated thunderstorms over the past few weeks and is contributing to larger longer term rainfall amounts. Otherwise, moderately humid and near to slightly above normal temperatures prevailed.. Total weekly rainfall: 1.85 inches (+1.24 in ...

The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument provided an infrared snapshot of Iggys cloud top temperatures on January 26, 2012 at 0611 UTC (1:11 a.m. EST). The AIRS image showed a large and rounded area of high, cold clouds, around the entire center of circulation. The data also showed that strongest convection (rapidly rising air that condenses and forms the thunderstorms that make up the cyclone) is located slightly to the west of the center, because of easterly wind shear. The temperatures of those high cloud tops were colder than -63 Fahrenheit (-51.7 Celsius), which is a threshold scientists use to identify strong thunderstorms with heavy rainfall. This is an indication that Iggy will continue to strengthen ...

The air was still warm--but I still shivered as the sun set. It was a habit from years of living in northern climates where, the majority of the year, when the rays disappear, cold sets in. But in Thailand, it was different. It never got cold. It was always a constant warm that, during the daylight hours, thickened in the humidity. And it was more of a de-thickening of th humid air at night, but it never got below 80. And there I sat, with the warm air whipping through my hair as a the truck barreled down the two lane road. The normal glow of the sunset at this time was dashed by the dark and impending storm clouds coming from the north. It was like the clouds were chasing the truck. And they caught up. The first couple drops came down hard and fast. And the truck sped along faster. I was in the back, in the bed of the truck, with five other Thais, one of which was a young child. There were at least three Thais in the cab. I cant recall, the luke-warm beer can showed marks from my clenched ...
As noted scientist Richard Feynman once explained, "the earth is negative, and the potential in the air is positive." That tension is maintained by thunderstorms, which are happening at some point in the world at any given time. But that tension varies throughout the planet. On a day without a cloud in the sky, APG levels can get up to 100 volts per meter, the metric used to measure the strength of an electric field. However, in a thunderstorm those levels can rise up to 10 kilovolts per meter, exponentially larger. ...

Day 2 Results. 28 Points Behind with 17 Races to Go. MADISON, Wisc. - The Bulldogs faced another long day in Madison, squeezing off several races before a severe thunderstorm warning sent competitors in for the afternoon. Racing restarted shortly before 7 p.m., only to be abandoned due to darkness. The Bulldogs currently sit in sixth overall, 28 points behind leader Boston College.. A light breeze greeted the sailors this morning, and increased to six knots during the first A division set. Senior Thomas Barrows and junior Blair Belling represented the Bulldogs in the shifty conditions. The pair finished 14th and sixth in their two races, before relinquishing the reins to sophomore Joseph Morris and senior Marla Menninger. After the first race of the B set, a thunderstorm warning and the possibility of golf-ball sized hail sidelined the fleet for the rest of the day. Undeterred, the race committee waited for a chance to continue racing, and found one just before 7:00 p.m. Morris and Menninger ...

Emergency costs were initially pegged at $48.5 million after a sudden thunderstorm caused major flooding Aug. 5, but have now risen to $54.5 million, according to an update from the Sewerage and Water Board’s emergency manager, Paul Rainwater.
Oh, the puppy looks so sad and lonely. It is obvious it wants and needs some loving if it is alone all day long (and all night too?) and trying to get through that hole in the fence to get to anyone. Did the OP ever talk to the people that have the puppy to find out why it is left outside all day? What if the weather turns horrible like a thunderstorm or something happens during the day that could harm the puppy? I would wonder about food and water if not shelter and if I had noticed day after day such a little puppy was left alone outside all day Id be knocking at the door of those peoples house inquiring about it. Just like it takes a community to raise (and look out for) a child it takes a community to look out for all animals. Sure hope the OP comes back and updates us about the puppys welfare.. ...
I woke up at 6:30 AM on Saturday. I got cleaned up and got to work. The Water guy can come anytime between 8-12, so I want to finish up the kitchen (except for the sink) before he gets here. I carried in the kitchen chairs from the living room (first time they have been back since before Labor Day!) and pushed the rolling cart back into place. Other than the sink, the kitchen is now together again!. For a change, I remembered to fill and program the coffee maker Friday night. I had my first cup while working, but stopped to enjoy the second one. I sat on the front porch and watched it rain. It rained (softly) off and on all day Friday, BTW, and when it wasnt raining, it was overcast and foggy here in Redford.. It was still not raining hard, although they said on the weather channel we could get heavier rains today and maybe thunderstorms. What amazed me was that, when I looked out the kitchen window, my whole back yard (which has been mostly brown for all of August) was now a lush green! I took ...
MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - A thunderstorm in Colorado sent rocks, mud, debris and running water rushing down part of a canyon in Manitou Springs, leaving some vehicles covered or stuck in mud.
She was acting a little anxious earlier and came over to sit real close to me, like she does during thunderstorms. I noticed she kept making weird faces. It was kind of like the funny smile my dogs do before they start vomiting. But it was mostly on one side of her face-- she kept pulling her lip back in a twisted smile. It kept happening for about 10 minutes. It wasnt constant, because she stopped for a minute when I tried to show Phil. After watching her for a few seconds, it started again ...
Dogs, like their human companions, can experience restlessness, anxiety and fear, whether due to specific circumstances (a thunderstorm or unexpected loud noise) or due to an inherent aspect of their personality.
I camped in a meadow last night only to wake up by a torrential thunderstorm. Although my tent held up pretty well, I did not sleep very well that night. I broke camp very grumpily in the morning to start what the map guide called "a delightful stroll along the river". There was nothing delightful about it. First the whole thing was totally overgrown preferably with thistles. Everything was wet and after 10 minutes I was totally soaked. The river I was following had been flooded so badly that there was tons of debris like huge tree trunks all over the place. I started yelling in German. To make things worse there was a nice little paved road on the other side of the river. But the trail was routed on my "delightful" side. I started to wonder whether it is more practical to swim across and get wet or continue walking and get wet, too. Finally a swing bridge showed up. I have been on many swing bridges in my hiking career but this was definitely one of the worst. It was so scary that it took me ...

Movement?: Sporadic during the day, active at night and becoming more active in the early mornings. The other night, we had a horrible thunderstorm and it woke me up at 5 (that, and the little one dancing on my bladder). She was going NUTS. I kept saying "surely she cant hear this thunder" but maybe she could feel the vibrations? Or someone else suggested that perhaps my heart rate was increased and she was responding to that? Also, I noticed last night that its no longer a situation of "shes on this side" or "shes up here" - that girl is all over the place! Shes getting so big, Ill feel a tap on my left and then feel a tap on my right moments later. And I felt a foot (in my ribs, nonetheless) for the first time! It was so weird. ...

BTW, JJ didnt take out Kenseth. Kenseth took out Biffle. MK stayed too close to JJ on the restart and forced him to get loose. JJ was spectacular in saving that car. If he wasnt such a great driver (and Kenseth too), WAY more cars wouldve wrecked. JG wouldve won anyway and about a dozen cars wouldve been tore up too bad to try to finish (without the rain). Several cars/drivers got lucky that the rain washed out the rest of the race. Many of them would not have finished where they did if it wasnt for the thunderstorm ...
As much as we treat our dogs like family, they are not human after all, and dont have the understanding that we do about the temporary nature of fireworks. With fireworks, its very sudden and sporadic ...

Just as this wave of abysmal reality was about to sweep over me, here was another woman, with a personality like the mad careening bubbles in champagne, jumping me out of the clear blue. The electric contact of her lips reading mine at point blank range left me as speechless as it did breathless - despite an accompanying sense that I was planting my feet in the soft hope of romantic quicksand. Nothing satisfies the aching hunger in a mans soul like the taste of a womans lips. I had quite forgotten how long it had been since I had fed, and now someone was feeding on me. The desire for a woman in my life is one of the most compelling drives to surface in the stories I write, the sunsets I describe, the thunderstorms that color my adventures, and the tides that carry my plots out to sea. Yet as strong as this drive is, it is nothing compared to the soul-elevating sensation I derive from having a woman desire me. Out of two marriages and a dozen affairs, it has happened exactly once, that a woman ...
I have had some telling dreams, too. The most recent was a couple years ago when I dreamed that I was in the old barn at my grandparents home. It got really windy, and the barn started creaking loudly. I ran out of it just as it collasped behind me. The next day I learned it really DID collapse overnight during a thunderstorm. Yeah, it was old and we all expected it to eventually cave in, but on the VERY NIGHT I dreamed of it??? Weird. ...
