Polygraph, Lie Detection or Truth Verification, provides an affordable opportunity to establish the basic truth to make informed decisions
There is great significance in lie detection for the criminal investigations and lawtrials. In this study, according to the nonlinear characteristics of electroencephalography( EEG),it is the first time to use the sample entropy( SE),a nonlinear dynamical parameter of EEG,to see if someone is lying. The sample entropy values of 30 subjects EEG signals in lying or honesty states were calculated and analyzed. The study found that the fluctuating range of SE values in honesty was obviously less than that in lying. It is more important that the SE values in lying was significantly higher than the honesty, which indicated that SE could be used to distinguish EEG signals between two different states of honesty and lying. This research provides a newway for EEG-based lie detection.
Pathological liar treatment - I sometimes fabricate things or lie to make me seem more interesting to myself. I am aware its not true. Am I a pathological liar? Is it my OCD? Lying. Is a bad habit, PERHAPS pathological or perhaps not. Break the cycle by stopping yourself mid-sentence when you become aware of what you are doing. If the lie is out, tell the person you exaggerated. See a mental health professional to see the extent of this and if treatment is needed. Congrats on being aware of this. As you get free of this behavior life can get better. Peace and health.
Why are polygraphs not admissible in court? There are various reasons that point out to the inadmissibility of polygraph tests in court. Many argue that the lie detector machine does not have the ability to deduce whether a person is telling the truth or not. It is more concerned with the physiological responses of an individual with regard to the questioning.

Polygraph evidence was largely inadmissible in U.S. courtrooms until 1993 when the Supreme Court decided Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc. This case broadened the test for admissibility of expert evidence. It gave judges the freedom to make decisions about whether to admit the evidence of experts, including polygraph examiners, on a case-by-case basis, depending on its relevance, reliability, and the extent to which it meets scientific standards. Although jurisdictions vary in their use of the Daubert principles, polygraph evidence has been allowed in over 20 states and in 9 of the 12 federal circuits.. Nevertheless, U.S. courts are hesitant to admit polygraph evidence into court, as polygraphs remain nearly universally frowned upon as courtroom lie detectors. Both state and federal courts tend to express doubt as whether such evidence is reliable. Despite the assurance of due process in U.S. courts, courts have opined that due process does not require the admissibility of all ...

A US online security group, Symantec, has uncovered a cybercrime operation by hackers posing a potential sabotage threat to power plant operations in Europe and US.. A cyber-espionage campaign has been launched by a hacking group called Energetic Bear, also known as Dragonfly, against energy firms and the control systems that power the electric grid and other key industrial businesses.. With early indications suggesting origination in eastern Asia, the attackers have the potential to mount sabotage operations against their victims, Symantec said in a report.. According to the report, hackers have managed to compromise several strategically vital organisations for intelligence purposes while, if they had deployed the sabotage capabilities open to them, it could have harmed or disrupted energy supplies in affected nations.. Energy grid operators, major electricity generation firms, petroleum pipeline operators and energy industry industrial equipment providers in the US, Spain, France, Italy, ...
Humans have told truths and lies throughout all of history. We stretch the truth for various reasons. We sometimes spin little white lies of convenience, and big, catastrophic lies that shake civilizations. We lie in order to avoid consequences, humiliation, and to please others. As a matter of survival its been important to tell lies from truth, and since the dawn of time weve sought ways to know the difference. So without our modern neurological sensory equipment and advanced interrogation techniques, how did the ancients determine if someone was fibbing? Approaches employed in determining truth or lies depended much on religious and cultural background. A common sense understanding of the world, and practical experience, were the early tools of lie detection. Evidence was almost always based on sworn oaths and testimony. This was so until the introduction of more objective techniques, such as measurement, forensics, and the scientific method were employed by Archimedes, and during the ...

But what if Mark had grown up in a Midwestern town no one had heard of and upon relocating to a brand new company, he decided to tell people he came from New York? Or what if Mark, unprompted, told his coworkers that instead of the cold he appeared to have, he was actually diagnosed with cancer? These types of lies seem to have no real external purpose. They fuel the internal personality and identity of the person lying. Almost every lie propels the way the liar want others to see them.. In a sense, the compulsive or pathological liar is lying to create a false sense of identity in which they can control. The difference between pathological and compulsive liars is thin, but distinct. The intention of pathological liars differs from compulsive liars when their sense of empathy is questioned. Pathological liars demonstrate little care for others and tend to be manipulative in other aspects of their life. They lie with such conviction that at times, pathological liars can actually believe the lies ...

In some ways, it sounds like a modern-day witch trial: using brain scans to detect a suspect’s first-hand recollection of an act they stand accused of committing. Some experts around the world have suggested that a test like this could hamper the efforts of those who attempt to lie their way out of trouble in court, hailing the technology as an advance potentially as important as DNA evidence. What are the legal ramifications of using this kind of technology in court, and if this test isn’t a panacea, is there another method in the forensic pipeline that could be? Host Dr. Mark Nolan Hill peers into the future of lie detection with Dr. J. Peter Rosenfeld, professor of psychology at Northwestern University, and Henry Greely, professor of law and director of the Center for Law and the Biosciences at Stanford University.

University of British Columbia research shows that managers should keep team members connected and engaged to avoid workplace sabotage. Co-authored by UBC Sauder School of Business Prof. Karl Aquino, the study reveals that envious employees are more likely to undermine peers if they feel disconnected from others.. We often hear that people who feel envious of their colleagues try to bring them down by spreading negative rumors, withholding useful information, or secretly sabotaging their work, says Prof. Aquino, who conducted the study with colleagues from the University of Minnesota, Clemson University in South Carolina and Georgia State University.. However, Aquino says envy is only the fuel for sabotage. The match is not struck unless employees experience what psychologists call ℠moral disengagement´ - a way of thinking that allows people to rationalize or justify harming others.. The researchers explain that moral disengagement is most likely to occur when an envious co-worker feels ...

Purpose: To examine the neural correlates during deception and truth telling by using a functional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging technique and an ecologically valid task and to compare the results with those of a standard polygraph examination. Materials and Methods: All subjects gave written informed consent for this HIPAA-approved study, which was approved by the institutional review board of Drexel University. Eleven healthy subjects (five female and six male subjects; mean age, 28.9 years) were randomly assigned to the group of guilty subjects or the group of nonguilty subjects. Each group consisted of two separate functional MR imaging conditions: lie-only condition and truth-only condition. The lie-only condition was used to compare brain activity during a known lie to control questions and a subjective lie to relevant questions. The truth-only condition was used to compare brain activity during a known truthful response to control questions and a subjective truthful response to ...

If the evidence for polygraph accuracy had been strong and scientifically validated, I would not have hesitated in encouraging Peter Khoury to do polygraph testing. Instead my own research meant I would not be protecting Peter Khourys best interests if I remained silent about his decision to eagerly embrace such testing. In fact I became a thorn in the side of the documentary producers, who were intent on using the polygraph testing as a dramatic element in the show. I was asked by Peter Khoury to be present when the documentary team, Gavin Wilson, the Polygraph examiner, and Mary & Chris Rodwell visited Peters home for the test on September 1st, 2010. As I was getting over a bout of the flu this was a draining experience, but a necessary one. I had a debate with Gavin about the validity of polygraph testing. He accepted that I had compelling evidence, but obviously stood by his profession. I was also alarmed when I overheard the producer trying to encourage the polygraph examiner to ask Peter ...
The first popularly used polygraph was developed by Marc Isambard Brunel, an architect and civil engineer from France who escaped to the United States and then settled in England. He was first granted an American patent in January 1799 for a machine for writing with two pens (the American patent was lost in the Great Patent Fire of 1836). Brunels polygraph was a framework device that remediated the pantographs parallelogram; the writer wields the pen on one side of the device and whatever is inscribed is reproduced by a jointed pen on the other side of the frame. On April 11, 1799, Brunel was granted a patent for the device in England, where it enjoyed some popularity. The patent abstract reads as follows: Brunel 11th April 1799 2305. A grant unto MARC ISAMBARD BRUNEL, of the parish of St. Mary, Newington, in the county of Surry, gent, for his new invented writing and drawing machine, by which two or more writings or drawings resembling each other may be made by the same person at the same ...
The following is a guest post from Doug Williams, who writes from the federal prison camp at Florence, Colorado. Williams, who for decades had taught people how to pass or beat polygraph tests without incident (and whose website, Polygraph.com, remains online), was targeted for entrapment in a federal criminal investigation dubbed Operation Lie Busters. On 21 February 2013, federal agents searched Williams home and office, seizing business records. Williams was later indicted on two counts of mail fraud and three counts of witness tampering, and pled guilty during a trial held in May 2015. On 30 October 2015, Williams began serving a two-year prison sentence. The only crimes of which Williams was convicted are those that federal agents conceived and stage managed.. Washington, DC -- Homicide is one of the leading causes of death for pregnant women in the US, according to new recommendations issued today by The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (The College). In addition to lethal violence, many abused adolescent girls and women have male partners who intentionally sabotage their contraception, deliberately give them sexually transmitted infections (STIs), or force them into having unwanted pregnancies or abortions.. In the new guidelines, The College describes reproductive and sexual coercion as a pattern of physical violence and/or psychologically coercive behaviors intended to control a womans sexual decision-making, contraceptive use, and/or pregnancy. Sabotaging a womans contraceptive method, pressuring her to become pregnant unwillingly, or forcing her to end or continue a pregnancy against her will are all examples of reproductive coercion. Some male partners go so far as to forcefully remove intrauterine devices (IUDs) and ...

Speaking of things I dont know, what the fuck is a flip. I see this word occasionally used to describe a remix. Why is it not simply called a remix? WHY. One technical report conducted in 1999 by ACS Defense, Inc. and the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome, N.Y., concedes that information from previous studies of speech under stress combined with their own Air Force evaluations and experiments using commercial VSAs suggests that a speakers voice characteristics change when the speaker is under stress. However, as stated previously in other studies, a variety of factors in addition to stress can reflect changes in the human speech production process, including the presence or absence of microtremors. In its final conclusions, the Air Force study determined that the level and degree to which changes in muscle control associated with speech production impart more or less fluctuation in the speech signal cannot be conclusively determined. In other words, focusing on the absence or presence of microtremors alone does not conclusively define the accuracy of VSAs. Furthermore, the study recommends that several speech features may be needed to ...

In this webcast, we will explore how to effectively use cyber deception to hunt advanced threat actors and other threats. We will discuss the use of incident response automation, and specifically how deception orchestration can be used to deploy successful deception campaigns.Starting from the initial reconnaissance phase, cyber deception technology takes advantage of the critical stages through which all attackers must pass (infiltration and lateral movement) and creates a controlled path for them to follow. The most effective cyber deception solutions allow the organization to create deception stories and realistic environments for hunting cyber attackers.Deception orchestration takes this to the next level by integrating incident response automation into the existing deception platform. We will also introduce Cymmetrias community edition of their deception solution, MazeRunner, freely available for download. Webcast attendees will come away with an understanding of what cyber deception is, how to

To get the most from Deception, forget old-fashioned putty-like concealers that never match your skin tone. Deception refracts natural light to perfectly match your own complexion. There is no need to spread Deception all over your face. To apply correctly take a small dab on your finger tip (half the size of a dime) and softly glide it in one direction over the wrinkle lines that you want to hide. You can use Deception with or without make-up. If you use a foundation, apply it first, then Deception . Dont worry, it will not mix into your makeup. It will not create any paste effect or leave behind any oily residue. There is no need to rub it into your skin or apply it in large amounts. Just smooth the cream lightly over shadow lines. Deception vanishes from your skin surface in about a minute after its applied. Remember you dont need to spackle over the lines! Just apply according to these instructions and watch Deception work. Say Goodbye to wrinkles and fine lines instantly when you use ...
Lie detection has a long history in mythology and fairy tales; the polygraph has allowed modern fiction to use a device more easily seen as scientific and plausible. Notable instances of polygraph usage include uses in crime and espionage themed television shows and some daytime television talk shows, cartoons and films. The most notable polygraph TV show is Lie Detector, which first aired in the 1950s created and hosted by Ralph Andrews. In the 1960s Andrews produced a series of specials hosted by Melvin Belli. We studied a lie detection protocol immune to countermeasures. The 4 stimulus conditions were (1 and 2) supraliminal acquaintance name primed by subliminal acquaintance name (A-A) versus subliminal nonacquaintance name (N-A) and (3 and 4) supraliminal nonacquaintance name primed by subliminal acquaintance name (A-N) versus subliminal nonacquaintance name (N-N). In Experiment 1 and replication, principal components analysis-derived event-related potential components revealed significant differences between dishonestly answered supraliminal acquaintance conditions with differing primes (A-A vs. N-A). In Experiment 2 subjects were required to lie in A-N and N-N conditions, in contrast to Experiment 1, in which subjects lied in A-A and N-A conditions. No significant effects were found. In Experiment 3, the lying task was removed and no significant differences were found. We conclude that subliminal primes modulate ERPs in conditions with supraliminal acquaintance name when the task involves lying. ...
Abstract: The primary question this dissertation seeks to answer is: What factors affect whether nonstate armed groups (NSAGs) employ deception and what kind of deception strategy they target against an adversary? The thesis proposes the endgame theory of deception, which is called such because it argues that for NSAGs engaging in deception, outcome is more ... read moreimportant than process, planners, or target levels, and NSAGs sometimes use tactical or operational measures to achieve strategic results. The theory states that given an NSAGs aim to use deception against a state target, then five requirements summarized by Abram Shulsky--strategic coherence, an understanding of the target, an infrastructure to coordinate deception and security, channels to feed false information, and the ability to receive feedback--as well as the targets counterdeception capabilities and the threat presented to the NSAG by the target are the primary factors that affect whether the NSAG can engage in ...

Deception is the act of propagating a belief that is not true, or is not the whole truth (as in half-truths or omission). Deception can involve dissimulation, propaganda, and sleight of hand, as well as distraction, camouflage, or concealment. There is also self-deception, as in bad faith. It can also be called, with varying subjective implications, beguilement, deceit, bluff, mystification, ruse, or subterfuge. Deception is a major relational transgression that often leads to feelings of betrayal and distrust between relational partners. Deception violates relational rules and is considered to be a negative violation of expectations. Most people expect friends, relational partners, and even strangers to be truthful most of the time. If people expected most conversations to be untruthful, talking and communicating with others would require distraction and misdirection to acquire reliable information. A significant amount of deception occurs between some romantic and relational partners. Deceit ...

Electrodermal activity (EDA) and other peripheral autonomic electrical parameters have been used as indicators of emotional states, including depressive states and suicidal state. We aimed to review EDA research systematically, focusing on EDAs usefulness as a biomarker for depression and suicidal behaviour. We searched MEDLINE, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases, following PRISMA guidelines. The initial screening of articles was based on titles and abstracts; then the full text was reviewed. A preliminary synthesis of findings was developed using tables, thematic analysis and quality ratings. 1287 articles were screened and 77 relevant studies were identified and included in the systematic review. The studies were fairly consistent in maintaining that hypoactive electrodermal response is an established feature of patients affected by depression. There is also preliminary evidence that monitoring EDA may help to differentiate the phases of mood disorders. A few studies provided

Impression management, as one of the most essential skills of social function, impacts ones survival and success in human societies. However, the neural architecture underpinning this social skill remains poorly understood. By employing a two-person bargaining game, we exposed three strategies involving distinct cognitive processes for social impression management with different levels of strategic deception. We utilized a novel adaptation of Granger causality accounting for signal-dependent noise (SDN), which captured the directional connectivity underlying the impression management during the bargaining game. We found that the sophisticated strategists engaged stronger directional connectivity from both dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and retrosplenial cortex to rostral prefrontal cortex, and the strengths of these directional influences were associated with higher level of deception during the game. Using the directional connectivity as a neural signature, we identified the strategic deception with

Absolutely. You can not only learn what to look for, but with practice, you can learn what questions can expose the lie further. But keep in mind, it is not about detecting lies, and it is about identifying behaviors brought on by stress. For example, what if during a sales deal you were able to spot a behavior opposite the words of the conversation. Thats my bottom line, may mean nothing if you spot a quick sign of contempt showing something different than the words. If trained to detect these behaviors, you would indeed protect your pocketbook by negotiating further. ...
A judge in Brooklyn has excluded Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) lie-detector evidence from a trial there. However, the decision will not set a precedent, as it was made without even conducting a hearing on the methods validity, but on the principle, argued by the defense, that juries are supposed to decide the credibility of…

In recent years, neuroimaging techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) have played a significant role in elucidating the neural underpinnings of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, a detailed understanding of the neural regions implicated in the disorder remains incomplete because of considerable variability in findings across studies. The aim of this meta-analysis was to identify consistent patterns of neural activity across neuroimaging study designs in PTSD to improve understanding of the neurocircuitry of PTSD. We conducted a literature search for PET and fMRI studies of PTSD that were published before February 2011. The article search resulted in 79 functional neuroimaging PTSD studies. Data from 26 PTSD peer-reviewed neuroimaging articles reporting results from 342 adult patients and 342 adult controls were included. Peak activation coordinates from selected articles were used to generate activation likelihood estimate maps
Three former CIA officers-among the worlds foremost authorities on recognizing deceptive behavior-share their proven techniques for uncovering a lie. Imagine how different your life would be if you could tell whether someone was lying or telling you the truth. Be it hiring a new employee, investing in a financial interest, speaking with your child about drugs, confronting your significant other about suspected infidelity, or even dating someone new, having the ability to unmask a lie can have far-reaching and even life-altering consequences.. As former CIA officers, Philip Houston, Michael Floyd, and Susan Carnicero are among the worlds best at recognizing deceptive behavior. Spy the Lie chronicles the captivating story of how they used a methodology Houston developed to detect deception in the counterterrorism and criminal investigation realms, and shows how these techniques can be applied in our daily lives.. Through fascinating anecdotes from their intelligence careers, the authors teach ...
A relatively new polygraph technique, the Matte Quadri-Zone Comparison Technique was validated in a December 1989 study, where it correctly identified 91 percent of innocent subjects and 97 percent of guilty subjects. The two major factors which can produce a physiological response, and thereby a false positive on the test, are fear of error (which cannot be distinguished from the reaction caused by fear of detection) and anger. Most errors in polygraph examination stem from an improper pretest interview, where the examiner failed to remain impartial and nonaccusatory. Honoring the defenses request for representation during the administration of a polygraph, and granting the defense counsel access to the results, is even more warranted then ever with the advent of a precedent-setting Federal Court ruling admitted polygraph results into evidence. The right of the defendant to protect himself against error that might lead to his loss of liberty or life supercedes any possible law enforcement ...

Over the past three years, President Obama has demonstrated his willingness to lie about anything and everything if it leads to the acquisition and retention of maximum power for himself and his cohorts. Obama follows a pattern of overloading the system with deception, making responses to every individual distortion impractical or outright impossible. While Obamas opponents spend their precious time addressing each new lie, Obama keeps the focus off the end-zone, and seizures of power previously unthinkable are accomplished. At some point, citizens grow weary of hearing that their leaders are out for their ill, that political policies are nothing more than grand deceptions. Who wants to believe that his president is a serial liar that seeks to impose full Socialism on the land of the free? Some truths are too big to contemplate -- an observation that would lead one of the worlds most successful propagandists to write: It would never come into their...(Read Full Article) ...

Article: Seeds of Deception: 10-pg summary by Author Jeffrey M. Smith - Given the amount of recent attention on genetically modified organisms, it seems appropriate to reproduce for OEN readers a ten-page summary of the book, Seeds of Deception: Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in the Food You Eat. Deception technology uses decoys, or traps, that mimic a networks actual IT assets. In its early days, deception technology required considerable manual labor and expertise to deploy, monitor and maintain. But, partly due to virtualization and automated deployment, the technology may be seeing renewed interest among healthcare organizations.. We all know that there are a number of attacks that occur even in environments where they have multiple security controls deployed, said Mac McMillan, CEO, and president of CynergisTek, a cybersecurity, and information consulting firm.. TechTarget featured Mac McMillans commentary in the article above.. ...

Several methods can be used to score the number of electrodermal response (galvanic skin response) changes. In all cases, it is assumed that the EDA (GSR)
Being in close social proximity to a stranger is generally perceived to be an uncomfortable experience, which most people seek to avoid. In circumstances where crowding is unavoidable, however, people may seek to withdraw their attention from the other person. This study examined whether social discomfort, as indexed by electrodermal activity, is related to a withdrawal of attention in 28 (m=8, f=20) university students. Students performed a radial line bisection task while alone or together with a stranger facing them. Physiological arousal was indexed by a wrist monitor, which recorded electrodermal activity. Correlational analyses showed that individuals who displayed physiological discomfort when together showed a withdrawal of the perceived midpoint of the line towards them (and away from the stranger). Conversely, individuals who showed no discomfort exhibited an expansion of the perceived midpoint away from them. We propose that participants shift their attention away from the stranger to

Only GEL101 (a solution designed to mimic the salt concentration of sweat) should be used with reusable skin conductance (electrodermal activity) recording electrodes. GEL101 electrode paste is specially formulated with 0.5% saline in a neutral base. Similarly, EL507 is BIOPAC's only disposable electrode designed for use in skin conductance measurements. EL507 also uses an isotonic recording gel, similar to GEL101. The use of gels formulated for other biopotential measurements leads to an overestimate of the tonic skin conductance level and violates standard recommendations for methods of monitoring electrodermal activity.. Eighty-seven experts on the psychology of confessions-many of whom were highly published, many with courtroom experience-were surveyed online about their opinions on 30 propositions of relevance to deception detection, police interrogations, confessions, and relevant general principles of psychology. As indicated by an agreement rate of at least 80%, there was a strong consensus that several findings are sufficiently reliable to present in court. This list includes but is not limited to the proposition that the risk of false confessions is increased not only by explicit threats and promises but by 2 common interrogation tactics-namely, the false evidence ploy and minimization tactics that imply leniency by offering sympathy and moral justification ...
Airline Transport Pilot ACS Exams. Airplane Performance and Weight and Balance Study Unit 6. Study Unit 1. Test was easy after all that lol. In the process of reviewing roughly 3,400 private pilot and instrument rating questions, a cross-functional FAA team, that includes one outside stakeholder (UNDs Kent Lovelace), has eliminated approximately 20% of questions from the test bank.
