The hyper-arid central region of the Namib Desert is characterised by quartz desert pavement terrain that is devoid of vascular plant covers. In this extreme habitat the only discernible surface covers are epilithic lichens that colonise exposed surfaces of quartz rocks. These lichens are highly susceptible to disturbance and so field surveys have been limited due to concerns about disturbing this unusual desert feature. Here we present findings that illustrate how non-destructive surveys based upon advanced photogrammetry techniques can yield meaningful and novel scientific data on these lichens. We combined structure from motion analysis, computer vision and GIS to create 3-dimensional point clouds from two-dimensional imagery. The data were robust in its application to estimating absolute lichen cover. An orange Stellarangia spp. assemblage had coverage of 22.8% of available substrate, whilst for a black Xanthoparmelia spp. assemblage coverage was markedly lower at 0.6% of available substrate.
In symbiotic systems, patterns of symbiont diversity and selectivity are crucial for the understanding of fundamental ecological processes such as dispersal and establishment. The lichen genus Nephroma (Peltigerales, Ascomycota) has a nearly cosmopolitan distribution and is thus an attractive model for the study of symbiotic interactions over a wide range of spatial scales. In this study, we analyze the genetic diversity of Nephroma mycobionts and their associated Nostoc photobionts within a global framework. The study is based on Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) sequences of fungal symbionts and tRNA(L) (eu) (UAA) intron sequences of cyanobacterial symbionts. The full data set includes 271 Nephroma and 358 Nostoc sequences, with over 150 sequence pairs known to originate from the same lichen thalli. Our results show that all bipartite Nephroma species associate with one group of Nostoc different from Nostoc typically found in tripartite Nephroma species. This conserved association appears to have been
Unlike most colobines, the Sichuan snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana) lives in temperate habitats with strong seasonality and limited plant food availability. R. roxellana mainly relied on year-round available fruticose lichens, an uncommon food source for mammals, supplemented by seasonally available plant food. Fruticose lichens were more easily digestible than plant food. Fruticose lichens contained less feeding deterrents, in particular crude fibers and condensed tannins, than all plant parts. Fruticose lichens also contained more nonstructural carbohydrates than plant leaves. In addition, energy content in fruticose lichens was equivalent to that in some food plant parts. ❧ Fruticose lichens contained less crude proteins than most plant parts. It is unknown how R. roxellana physiologically adapts to the low-protein diet. Lichens produce a range of metabolites that are unique compared to vascular plants. These metabolites have various biological actions (e.g. antibiotic and ...
Bryological and Lichenological Section/ABLS. Shustov, Mikhail V. [1]. The main formation stages of the Privolzhskaya upland lichen flora.. The lichen flora of the Privolzhskaya upland has been continuously developing starting from the late Paleogene. The oldest relict elements of modern lichen flora of the region are the relicts of tertiary heat-resistant broad-leaved forests of the early-middle Miocene. The lichen flora of the Privolzhskaya upland developed on the basis of the tertiary mesophytic lichen flora having been heavily influenced by ancient Mediterranean desert-steppe-xerophytic as well as tertiary South Urals mountaineous (in general sense) and European boreal lichen floras. The main factors which determined the historical processes of regional flora and vegetation development were the geographical location of the Privolzhskaya upland in the system of vegetation-climatic zones and the displacement of their boundaries in the result of climate change, tectonic and denudation processes, ...
Xanthoparmelia stenophylla is traditionally utilized for the cure of snake bites and venearal diseases like syphilis. X. stenophylla have different colouring compounds and can be used as dye sources. Different extracts obtained from X. stenophylla were tested in terms of antioxidant and antibacterial traits. Phenol and flavonoid concentrations of the extracts were also determined. Chloroform and acetone were used assolvents in the soxhlet extraction. While bacteria‐inhibiting efficacy was detected with the disc diffusion technique. The antioxidant property was determined through DPPH radical scavenging activity, reducing power and metal chelating activity. Chloroform extract was most effective against Bacillus megaterium with an inhibition zone of 25 mm. Both the acetone and chloroform extracts were not effective against Klebsiella pneumonia. The highest phenolic content was found in the chloroform extract (42.58±0.47 µg/mL) and the highest flavonoid content was obtained in the acetone ...

The field trip to Little Darcy Mountain was entertaining, educational, and a sight-seeing delight. Although we saw evidence of elk, they werent around but with the use of binoculars we could see the elk down at the Young Life Village. We heard the flutter of wings which indicated that the grouse were around as they took shelter in the pines, but we werent able to spy them. We heard the sounds of Mountain Chickadees and the Pileated Woodpecker and saw Red-tailed Hawks, Mountain Bluebirds and in August Lake we sighted Bufflehead, Mallards and Canada Geese. These ducks were all seen in pairs, getting ready for that all important mating season.. On the hike our esteemed leader pointed out small things found on the ground but always overlooked, such as the Shaggy Peat Moss (Sphagnum squarrosum), Freckle Pelt-Leaf Lichen (Peltigera apthosa), Ribbed Scale Lichen (Cladonia cariosa), and Wolf Lichen (Letharia vulpina). We learned that there is a distinct difference between moss and lichen and that ...

Types of Affiliate Marketing. Whats interesting about affiliate marketing is that you can earn commissions in more ways than most people think. Allow me to explain the 3 different types of affiliate marketing and how you can earn through them.. 1. Unattached Affiliate Marketing - This type of affiliate marketing will not require too much work from you, you dont even have to setup an affiliate marketing blog like those for Amazon Affiliate Programs. This is more like a PPC marketing (pay-per-click) where you just show affiliate ads on sites that allow this kind of marketing and then get a commission for each click through that web users make on the ads.. 2. Related Affiliate Marketing - This type of marketing is where you are required to have some level of involvement and this is where you create an affiliate marketing blog or website and always show affiliate links on almost all of your website/blog pages. You also earn a commission for each time a web user clicks through the affiliate ...
Although terrestrial lichens and bryophytes are common in upland plant communities of the Blue Mountains in northeast Oregon, research on cryptogam communities in this region is wanting. Studies have shown that lichens and bryophytes can reduce soil erosion and increase soil fertility in other semiarid habitats of North America. Understanding the particular roles terrestrial lichens and bryophytes play in their ecosystems and how they react to anthropogenic disturbances is part of making sound management decisions. Managers in the Blue Mountains are now dealing with heavy fuel loads in forested habitats that were impacted by mountain pine beetles, western spruce budworm infestations, Douglas fir dwarf mistletoe, and drought from the 1970s into the 1990s. To better understand how cryptogam communities respond to fuels reduction treatments in insect impacted Abies grandis classified forests of the central Blue Mountains, we compared species composition of logged and burned stands to stands that ...

If are an online business owner, it is likely that you have given an affiliate program some thought. Affiliate programs, if they are properly run, can help to increase the number of sales your business makes. When it comes to starting an affiliate program, there is one thing that many business owners do not think about. That is affiliate tracking software.. Affiliate tracking software is important and vital to the successful operation of an affiliate program. Affiliate tracking software will enable you, the business owner, to know when one of your affiliates helped to generate a sale. In addition to knowing when that sale was generated, the proper tracking software will also enable you to know who helped to generate each sale. This is important, especially when it comes to rewarding your affiliates for their hard work. Since this software is so important, you will want to obtain it as soon as you decide to start your own affiliate program. When it comes to finding affiliate tracking software, ...

You might have brushed by it in the forest, where this hairy-looking symbiosis between algea and fungi perches on tree limbs. The look of the lichen usnea explains its nicknames: old mans beard, trees dandruff, womens long hair, and beard lichen. For centuries, its been considered a handy medicinal. People grab some to dress wounds, or take it internally for infections or oral inflammation. But in the 1990s, when manufacturers of weight-loss drugs started adding sodium usniate (usnic acid) to their formulas, several cases of liver damage emerged.. ...

The aim with this study is to determine genetic variation, dispersal potential and the migration history to Sweden since the last glaciation of the rare lichen Cliostomum corrugatum, a crustose epiphytic lichen with a grey greenish thallus, conspicuous light yellow to light brown apothecia and black pycnidia. Collections were made in January and February in 2005 at five sites in Östergötland, Sweden. The most frequent common habitat for Cliostomum corrugatumis on Quercus and sometimes also on other deciduous trees for example Ulmus and Fraxinus. On the tree trunk it is the rough bark it prefers and the flat terminal parts of the bark structure and not on the sides of the cracks. The main distribution of Cliostomum corrugatum is in Europe but a satellite population has been found on the west coast of North American in British Columbia. It is red listed in Sweden, with the status near threatened. Three sequences SSUintron, IGS and ITS were studied and the two latter appear to lack genetic ...

Palaeogene volcanics with plant-bearing sediment intercalations crop out extensively on King George Island in the South Shetland Islands, West Antarctica. The plant fossil assemblages are the most complete Palaeogene terrestrial foliar record in Antarctica. Compositional variations in the flora have previously been used to construct climate change models for the Tertiary. King George Island is part of the late Triassic to Recent, Andean - West Antarctic subducting margin. Eastwards subduction oceanic crust beneath the Antarctic Peninsula resulted in mountain building and crustal melting at depth that in turn led to large stratovolcanoes and active pyroclastic volcanism (Leat et al., 1995). Consequently the flora is preserved in a range of primary and reworked volcaniclastic sediments, that were deposited in lacustrine and ephemeral lacustrine basins developed on the volcanic surface. The King George Island flora consists of impressions and carbonised compressions of leaves of angiosperms, ...
Medicinal plants are increasingly being projected as suitable alternative source for the treatment of various diseases. However, toxic effects resulting from therapeutic bismuth compounds are still documented in animals and humans. This study described the genetic effects of five common lichen species and compared their activities on the genotoxicity induced by the colloidal bismuth subcitrate. After the application of colloidal bismuth subcitrate and lichen extracts, separate and together, human whole blood cultures were assessed by sister-chromatid exchange (SCE) and micronucleus tests. According to our results, the frequencies of SCE and micronucleus rate in peripheral lymphocytes were significantly increased by colloidal bismuth subcitrate (at dose 5 mu g/mL) compared with controls. However, lichen extracts had no genotoxic effect. The order of anti-genotoxicity efficacy against colloidal bismuth subcitrate was Pseudevernia furfuracea, Dermotocarpon intestiniforme, Ramalina capitata, ...
As an autoimmune issue, Lichen sclerosus is an uncommon skin condition that creates a discoloration of the skin. The area of the skin that is affected becomes whitish, patchy and is very itchy. This area, over time, will become thinner. If left untreated, lichen can lead to other complications such as infections. Most people need some form of treatment, while others, the lichen goes away on its own. Due to the fact that Lichen (LS) is considered an autoimmune condition, means even if it does clears up, it may return. Lichen can remain dormant for periods of time, and then resurface. This can happen when your body is under stress, or when your body is sick. Autoimmune diseases live in your body forever. Treatment for autoimmune issues will most likely become life long.. Lichen Sclerosus (LS), but it is most often seen in the menopause or post menopausal years in women, but truly anyone of any age can get. In some individuals, LS sometimes occurs during as well. It tends to arise in the body ...
Naturally, patients with oral lichen planus may have lichen planus in other anatomic areas. Skin involvement occurs in about 15% of oral cases, and oral involvement may seen in up to 50% of skin cases. However, my experience managing over 1000 cases over the years has taught me that severe cases in one area have minimal to no involvement in the other area.. The association of hepatitis C virus infection with oral lichen planus is controversial. In the recent past, it was recommended to screen for the hepatitis C antibody and measure liver enzymes in patients with oral lichen planus. Now we understand that there is an association between hepatitis C and oral lichen planus in countries that have a high prevalence of hepatitis C infection such as Italy, Spain and Japan, but not in the US, UK, or Germany. I do not order these tests unless a case is particularly resistant to standard therapy.. Just as with skin lichen planus, many drugs have been implicated as the cause of oral lichen planus. This ...

Lichen planus is an inflammatory disease that usually affects the skin, the mouth, or sometimes both. It may affect the genital skin as well. The cause of lichen planus is not known. There are cases of lichen planus-type rashes occurring as allergic reactions to medications for high blood pressure, heart disease and arthritis. In those cases, identifying and stopping the use of the drug helps clear up the condition within a few weeks. Some people with lichen planus can also have hepatitis C and your dermatologist may want to check you for this. Lichen planus affects men and women equally, and occurs most often in middle-aged adults.. Lichen planus of the skin is characterized by reddish-purple, flat-topped bumps that may be very itchy. They can be anywhere on the body, but seem to favor the inside of the wrists and ankles. The disease can also occur on the lower back, neck, legs, genitals, and in rare cases, the scalp and nails. Thick patches may occur, especially on the shins. Blisters are ...

The hydroquinone cream is a great solution for lichen planus. The hydroquinone cream for lichen planus works perfectly to hinder the production of melanin by putting a stop to the secretion of tyrosinase (This enzyme plays the most essential role in melanin production). As a result the skin tone starts getting lighter hiding the marks and patches of lichen planus eventually.. The best hydroquinone cream for lichen planus is that which are of 4% hydroquinone concentration. These work much better than the 2% ones, which are available over the counter. However, using a 4% hydroquinone cream for lichen planus would require doctors prescription. Along with it, the victim also needs to consume Vitamin A tablets.. ...

BACKGROUND: An association between HCV infection and lichen planus is uncertain because the prevalence of HCV infection in patients with lichen planus varies considerably from one geographic area to another. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of anti-HCV antibodies and its association with various clinical types of lichen planus in Mekkah, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A total of 114 cases of lichen planus were selected for the study. These were divided into four categories, including patients with skin lesions, skin and oral lesions, and oral or genital lesions alone. The sera of these patients were tested for HCV antibodies by means of a third-generation ELISA and serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were simultaneously determined. A group of 65 volunteers served as a control group. RESULTS: Of the 114 patients with lichen planus, 30 had HCV antibodies (26.3%). In the 65 control group subjects anti-HCV antibodies were observed in 3
Microcystins form a large family of cyclic toxins characterized by a highly conserved chemical structure with an extensive amino acid composition at the two variable positions, two and four (Additional file 1: Figure S7 and Table S3). In this study, we detected rare [D-Leu1]MC variants from strains of the distantly related genera Microcystis, Nostoc, and Phormidium. Almost all microcystins reported in the literature contain D-Ala in position 1 [8]. Previously, microcystins containing D-Leu [27-31], Gly [35], and D-Ser [36, 37] have also been reported. The [D-Leu1]MC variant has previously been found from Microcystis aeruginosa NPLJ-4, Microcystis sp. RST 9501, and water blooms from Brazil and Canada dominated by Microcystis strains [27-31, 34]. The production of microcystins in lichen thalli by Nostoc symbionts has previously been reported [37, 38]. Nostoc strains isolated from lichen symbiosis produce a large variety of microcystins including the [D-Leu1]MC variant [31].. Microcystins are best ...

If youve noticed a small sore in your mouth, its possible you have a non-contagious disease known as lichen planus. Although usually benign, its still a good idea to have it examined and monitored.. The condition is so named because its lesions are similar in appearance to lichen, the algae and fungi organism often found on rocks and trees. Its believed to be a type of autoimmune disease, in which the body treats some of its own cells as foreign and reacts adversely to them. Certain medications and substances may also cause a lichenoid reaction. Besides the inner cheeks, gums or tongue, lichen planus may also appear on other skin or mucous surfaces on the wrists, legs or fingernails.. When it appears inside the mouth it usually resembles a lacy pattern of white lines or ulceration. Gum tissues may become red and inflamed, with some soreness after brushing or eating. Although theres no known cure for lichen planus, it rarely causes serious problems - in fact, you may not even be aware you ...
Lichen planus is a chronic mucocutaneous, immunologic disease. It can affect the oral mucosa, causing changes that can range from white lace-like patterns on the mucosa, to red atrophic changes to the presence of ulcerations. Symptoms can range from none to severe soreness that greatly interferes with eating. The etiology of lichen planus is not known, and because the tissue damage is mediated by immune cells, lichen planus is considered to be an autoimmune disease. Currently, the most common treatment for oral lichen planus (OLP) is use of systemic and/or topical steroids. These medications though efficacious have side-effects that limit the effectiveness of these treatments.. Tumeric, which comes from the plant curcuma longa, has been used for centuries in Ayurveda (Indian traditional medicine) for its anti-inflammatory properties. In western scientific studies, including invitro studies, animal studies and human studies, components of tumeric called curcuminoids (which include, curcumin ...
Essential oils can be used to treat and help with many skin conditions, lichen sclerosus included. Lichen sclerosus is an uncommon skin condition in which white patchy areas of skin develop and can, at times, cause discomfort. These patches can appear to be thinner than normal skin or sometimes thicker. The skin can become wrinkled looking and fold in on itself, fusing together. These patches are typically found near or around the genital and anal area, but can develop on other areas of the body as well, such as the upper body, arms, or breasts.. Lichen sclerosus is a condition found mostly in postmenoposal women, but it can affect men and children as well. In mild cases, the affected skin can be itchy or sensitive. In more severe cases, lichen sclerosus can cause extreme discomfort, bleeding, tearing, and sometimes ulcerated sores. Medical treatment can include steroid creams and ointments, such as triamcinolone or clobetasol. These can decrease the symptoms and help to make the affected area ...
Lichen sclerosus is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that mainly affects genital skin.. There are many uncertainties about lichen sclerosus in men, women and children, due to lack of published high quality evidence. There is a great need for further research into the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of this condition.. To address this, the James Lind Alliance Lichen Sclerosus Priority Setting Partnership (PSP) has been set up to identify and prioritise research questions that are important to people who have lichen sclerosus, the people who care for them, and the health professionals who treat them. The project is funded by the British Society for the Study of Vulval Disease (BSSVD) and co‐ordinated through the Centre of Evidence Based Dermatology.. ...
Lichen Planus is a disease characterized by development of itchy rashes on the skin or mucous membranes. Itching in Lichen Planus is generally so severe that it could badly spoil the patients sleep and could drive away his/her attention from the work. Mostly these rashes are found over arms or legs but in some cases they even affect mouth, hair, genitals and nails. On skin, these rashes appear like flat-topped polygonal bumps which are extremely itchy. On mucous membranes like the vagina or mouth, they appear like white sores or lacy patches which could be painful. Lichen Planus is not a contagious infection. This disease is mostly found in adults and is very rare among the children. It may take around two years for the patient to get completely rid of this disease.. SYMPTOMS. The symptoms of Lichen Planus include development of white rashes and flat-topped bumps of red, purple or pinkish shade on the skin which could be very itchy. ABSTRACT. Introduction. Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic poly-etiologic dermatosis by the mechanism of its development, manifested by papular rash on the skin and mucous membranes, severe itching.. The objective of the study was to determine and analyze the levels of endogenous intoxication markers in blood plasma of the patients with lichen planus depending on severity and duration of the disease.. Materials and methods. 48 patients, 20 men and 28 women, participated in the study. 31 patients had suffered from dermatosis for about 2 years, and 17 patients for over 2 years. Mild LP was diagnosed in 17 patients and moderate LP in 31 patients. The blood levels of homocysteine (HC), carbonyl groups of oxidative modified proteins (CG-OMP) and medium molecular weight peptides (MMWP) were determined in all the patients.. Results. Significantly increased blood plasma levels of HC, MMWP and CG were found in patients with lichen planus as compared to the control group. The patients with severe and ...

An allergen may cause antigen-presenting cells to activate a cell-mediate response, initiate lymphocyte accumulation, and form the discrete papules. Actually, Langerhans cells are present in large numbers in the infiltrate. Cytokines may shift the T lymphocyte response towards the T helper (CD4+) 2 subset that has the potential to produce the superficial dermal granulomas seen in lichen nitidus (in comparison, CD8+ lymphocytes play an important role in lichen planus (LP) where there are no granulomas). At each lateral margin of the infiltrate, rete ridges tend to extend downwards and seem to clutch the infiltrate in the manner of a claw clutching a ball. Direct immunofluorescence examination of lichen nitidus is usually negative (in comparison, direct immunofluorescence examination of LP shows colloid bodies in the papillary dermis, staining for complement and immunoglobulins, particularly IgM. An irregular band of fibrin is present along the basal layer in most cases. Often there is irregular ...

BackgroundLichen planus is a T-cell mediated autoimmune and chronic inflammatory disease that affects the skin and the mucous membrane. The results of numerous studies on oral mucosa have confirmed the effects of sex hormones on oral mucosa and the expression of estrogen (ER), progesterone (PR), and androgen receptors. Lichen planus is a common disease in middle-aged women. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the expression of ER and PR in patients with oral lichen planus (OLP).MethodThe participants consisted of sixty-six women. The biopsy specimens of these patients were stained via immunohistochemical staining for the detection of estrogen and progesterone markers.ResultsDespite low levels of sex hormones following menopause, ER and PR levels were lower in menopausal patients with lichen planus compared to the control group. The results also showed no significant difference in the percentage and severity of ER and PR expression in healthy non-menopausal women, menopausal women with OLP,

In recent years, it has been suggested that three may be arelation between lichen planus and the hepatic diseases, but this relation is ques tionabl. Some researchers recmommend that patients with lichen planus should be observed carefully for an underlying hepatic disease. In our study, AST and ALT levels of 35 patients who are diagnosed clinically and histopathologically as having oral lichen planus are measured, and they are investigatid as to the possibility of Hepatitis B. Ic has been determined that serum AST and ALT levels have been within normal limits and no significant difference has been established as compared to the control group. Hepatitis B antigens are found to be negative. ...
Lichen planus is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects various surfaces, including the skin, scalp, nails and mucous membranes.1,2 Global prevalence is about 1% to 2%.2 The disease affects people of all ethnic groups. It is most commonly seen in people 30-60 years old and occurs more often in females than in males.2. Oral lichen planus primarily affects the buccal mucosa, gingiva and the dorsal surface of the tongue and may not be associated with lesions on other mucosal or cutaneous surfaces.2 Clinical variants of oral lichen planus include asymptomatic forms such as reticular, papular, plaque-like lesions; erythematous and erosive forms of the disease are often associated with pain and bleeding.1 Current evidence points to a complex disease process mediated by cytotoxic CD8+ T cells that is directed against basilar keratinocytes and results in vacuolar degeneration and lysis of these cells.1,2 Diagnosis is based on de-fined histopathologic criteria coupled with the clinical appearance of ...

Lichen sclerosus is a common, acquired chronic inflammatory skin disease of unknown etiology, although circulating autoantibodies to the glycoprotein extracellular matrix protein 1 (ECM1) have been detected in most patients sera. We have examined the nature of ECM1 epitopes in lichen sclerosus sera, developed an ELISA system for serologic diagnosis, and assessed clinicopathological correlation between ELISA titer and disease. Epitope-mapping studies revealed that lichen sclerosus sera most frequently recognized the distal second tandem repeat domain and carboxyl-terminus of ECM1. We analyzed serum autoantibody reactivity against this immunodominant epitope in 413 individuals (95 subjects with lichen sclerosus, 161 normal control subjects, and 157 subjects with other autoimmune basement membrane or sclerosing diseases). The ELISA assay was highly sensitive; 76 of 95 lichen sclerosus patients (80.0%) exhibited IgG reactivity. It was also highly specific (93.7%) in discriminating between lichen ...
