Big data is only getting bigger, and that can cause big problems for researchers who need to store and share their data. Twenty doctoral students and post-doctoral associates from across the county learned the tools and techniques to solve these problems at the inaugural Cyber Carpentry Workshop at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and hosted by the UNC School of Information and Library Science (SILS), the two-week workshop in late July introduced students to a variety of applications, platforms, and processes for data life-cycle management and data-intensive computation. The Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) provided support for the workshop in the form of instructors and project management staff ...

YR 2009 SN 9781591585039 1591585031 AB For many practitioners, best practices are often developed through significant amounts of direct experience. However, they can also be developed through the examination and application of research findings. By critically assessing existing studies within library and information science, both aspiring and experienced professionals can acquire a deeper understanding of available methods, as well as design more effective studies. The author has created a book that mirrors the process of conducting a research study. At the same time, she exposes the reader to a wealth of competing and complementary techniques. Each chapter introduces a particular research method, points out its relative strengths and weaknesses, and provides a ...
From small and large local public libraries around Maine (Portland Public Library, Maine State Library, Kennebec Historical Society, Colby College) and the US, to large unique academic and specialized libraries(The National Archives, PBS, US Naval Academy, New York Times), our ILS students are doing it all! UMA students have even interned internationally in England, Pohnpei, St. Kitts and West Africa.. Students in the ILS program are required to complete either a practicum or internship (AS/BS) or an advanced research project (BS only). Both of these options have strict guidelines in order to qualify for one or the other and for their successful completion (see below). As the ILS program is available to students around the United States and Internationally, our students typically complete the Senior Capstone course right within their local community. This experience and successful completion of the course is an opportunity for students to demonstrate to the ILS Faculty and to UMA they have ...

Scott Douglas works for a smallish public library nestled cozily between Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm in Orange County, California. This is where most of the observations in his dispatch will take place, although sometimes he does go to other libraries (some even far, far away), and hell include those observations as they come.. Scott began as a student assistant at a college library in Fullerton. After receiving his bachelors degree, he was bored, confused, and didnt want to get off his parents insurance plan, so he enrolled in the Library Science and Information Technology program at San Jose State.. This dispatch will update on a sometimes-regular basis, and will include stories about strange patrons, strange tales, and otherwise just strange things. The names and description of the patrons are purposely left out, so as to protect their privacy (libraries are real sticklers for this privacy stuff, which is why many have been in a tiff about the Patriot Act, but dont get me ...

As a card-carrying instructional partner, I am always on the trail of research to support my experience. I have served as an elementary, junior high, and high school librarian. I have been a 5th-grade classroom teacher, a literacy coach, and district-level mentor for school librarian colleagues. My experience has shown me that instructional partnerships have great potential to improve students learning and educators teaching. I know I am a much better teacher as a result of learning side by side with my peers.. Still, in this age of accountability when anecdotal evidence is too often dismissed, it is important for educators to read research and learn from studies in the fields of education, library science, and technology to deepen their understanding of the potential, process, and impact of instructional partnerships. Ross Todd describes this cycle of research and practice, practice and research in this way. Research informing practice and practice informing research is a fundamental cycle ...

Despite the centrality of libraries in literacy and learning, the study of libraries has remained isolated within the disciplinary boundaries of information and library science since its inception in the early twentieth century. The aim of this book is to problematize and thereby mainstream this field of intellectual endeavor and inquiry. Collectively the contributors interrogate the presuppositions of current library practice, seek to understand how library as place and library as space blend together in ways that may be both contradictory and complementary, and envision new modes of information access and new multimodal literacies enabled by online environments ...
The basic principles and concepts of surface and colloid chemistry are of concern to many science disciplines, including chemistry, physics, engineering, materials science, biology and medicine. These same prinicples are used in the composition and production of consumer items such as plastics, glues, aerosols, creams, cosmetics and dairy products. The chemical, petroleum, mining, electronics and computer industries also employ surface science prinicples. This borad, interdisciplinary subject is represented to some degree in every librarys science collection. This paper presents a brief background on surface and colloid chemistry and cites general sources in sections covering textbooks, monographic series, conferences, journals, indexes, current awareness tools, online databases and organizations.

At PLoS, were dedicated to the tenet of Open Access, making academic literature widely available on the web. However, with an ever-growing pool of scientific literature, our goals have to consider not only making content available, but also accessible. With the breadth of articles we aggregate, you need a strong tool to find the specific information you want. Any advanced course should contain a reasonable list of pointers to the relevant literature. But I cant conceive of a well run course that requires students to search the literature extensively. This is a course in mathematics, not one in library science. Understanding the lectures, and doing the assigned exercises should require that you go a little, but just a little, beyond what you understood before. So chances are that if you are searching the literature you are just lost. Keep in mind that there are other sources of help. There may be a textbook, tutoring, teaching assistants, and dont forget your instructor! Your teacher should be accessible, and most of us teach because we like to and because we enjoy the interaction with the students. I find that most students are hesitant to approach me, I think because they believe theyd waste my time, or they are embarrassed because their problem seems so simple. But you shouldnt hesitate! Im paid to help students, and chances are that Ive ...

This question about the proposal title touches on the different aspects of the topic. There is an academic and scientific side commonly called Library and Information Science (as Aarthi noted) and an operational side concerned with day-to-day issues of lending institutions. To some extent, I would equate the term you used - Library Management - with the latter aspect.. But this is clearly a spectrum with plenty of overlap since presumably most (or at least many) graduates from the academic programs plan to manage or work for a library. As a result of that question, the proposal name was adjusted slightly from Library and Information Science to Libraries and Information Science. I appreciate the change because in my mind Library and Information Science (singular library) is strongly attached to the accredited academic programs. Since not all libraries have staff with degrees in library science the name communicated exclusivity to me when I first saw the change.. The initial Libraries proposal ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Is Information Science an Anomalous State of Knowledge. AU - Hollnagel, E.. PY - 1980. Y1 - 1980. N2 - This paper looks at some of the problems in information science from the experience with similar problems in psycho logy. The apparent need for a set of rigorous definitions of the basic concepts is discussed, and it is argued that although this is necessary for the natural sciences it is not necessary for sciences which concern themselves with behavioral phenomena which have a prior description in natural language. It is further argued that information science should be more interested in uncertainty than in information, and it is shown how the Anomalous State of Knowledge (ASK) paradigm may be used to describe itself, hence also informa tion science. It is finally concluded that by turning to problems of uncertainty and lack of information, rather than information, information science may avoid many of the mistakes made by psychology.. AB - This paper looks at some of the ...

Boundary objects (BO) are abstract or physical artefacts that reside in the interfaces between organisations or groups of people. The concept of BO, introduced by Star and Griesemer in an article in 1989, has been used in a broad variety of studies in different research communities from management to computer science and different fields of information science. The aim of this panel, composed of experienced BO researchers, is to provide an overview of and introduction to the state of the art of information science research informed by the theory for the researchers and practitioners participating in the conference; to illustrate the variety of studies and contexts in which the notion of BOs can be found useful in explicating connections between collections, cultures and commu- nities; and to push forward the state of the art of BO-oriented information science research by discussing new empirical and practical areas of interest and the theory itself.. ...

It is easy to be overwhelmed by statistics on the growth of the Internet and commercialization of cyberspace; graphs of exponential growth confirm our impressions of living in a revolutionary age. Recently, however, contrarian opinions have emerged, notably the Nielsen/Commercenet study claiming Internet use is considerably less than net proponents suggest.. Is the net overrated? Is it being swamped by the web crawlers designed to make searching better? Is it really an Edsel running on New Coke? And what are the implications and unintended consequences for information professionals? Come hear Debora (Ralf) Shaw, the incoming President of the American Society for Information Science, address these and other ponderables of the information age.. ...

Within information science, there has been a considerable emphasis on models and theories of information behaviour. The recent ASIST monograph, Theories of Information Behavior, provides an overview of the many the models and theories in information science (Fisher et al., 2005).. Models such as Taylors information use environment (Palmquist, 2005) and Dervins sense-making (Tidline, 2005) provide different perspectives on how individuals identify and seek to meet their information needs. Taylor, whose image of the information use environment recognized that the users environment or situation has a critical effect on the nature of information needed, has developed some of the earliest models of information use and was a precursor of a number of models focusing on the users cognitive state. In the case of sense-making, a paradigm that focuses on the user of information and the relationship of communication, information, and meaning for that user has an associated suite of data collection and ...
