YR 2009 SN 9781591585039 1591585031 AB For many practitioners, best practices are often developed through significant amounts of direct experience. However, they can also be developed through the examination and application of research findings. By critically assessing existing studies within library and information science, both aspiring and experienced professionals can acquire a deeper understanding of available methods, as well as design more effective studies. The author has created a book that mirrors the process of conducting a research study. At the same time, she exposes the reader to a wealth of competing and complementary techniques. Each chapter introduces a particular research method, points out its relative strengths and weaknesses, and provides a ...

Scott Douglas works for a smallish public library nestled cozily between Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm in Orange County, California. This is where most of the observations in his dispatch will take place, although sometimes he does go to other libraries (some even far, far away), and hell include those observations as they come.. Scott began as a student assistant at a college library in Fullerton. After receiving his bachelors degree, he was bored, confused, and didnt want to get off his parents insurance plan, so he enrolled in the Library Science and Information Technology program at San Jose State.. This dispatch will update on a sometimes-regular basis, and will include stories about strange patrons, strange tales, and otherwise just strange things. The names and description of the patrons are purposely left out, so as to protect their privacy (libraries are real sticklers for this privacy stuff, which is why many have been in a tiff about the Patriot Act, but dont get me ...
Novelist Melodee Elliott shares how her Library Sciences degree came in handy when it came to marketing her novel and thinking like a reader.
Despite the centrality of libraries in literacy and learning, the study of libraries has remained isolated within the disciplinary boundaries of information and library science since its inception in the early twentieth century. The aim of this book is to problematize and thereby mainstream this field of intellectual endeavor and inquiry. Collectively the contributors interrogate the presuppositions of current library practice, seek to understand how library as place and library as space blend together in ways that may be both contradictory and complementary, and envision new modes of information access and new multimodal literacies enabled by online environments ...
The basic principles and concepts of surface and colloid chemistry are of concern to many science disciplines, including chemistry, physics, engineering, materials science, biology and medicine. These same prinicples are used in the composition and production of consumer items such as plastics, glues, aerosols, creams, cosmetics and dairy products. The chemical, petroleum, mining, electronics and computer industries also employ surface science prinicples. This borad, interdisciplinary subject is represented to some degree in every librarys science collection. This paper presents a brief background on surface and colloid chemistry and cites general sources in sections covering textbooks, monographic series, conferences, journals, indexes, current awareness tools, online databases and organizations.
This post was written by Michael Morris. Michael is a Publications Assistant for PLoS Medicine with a Master of Library Science degree. His previous experience in the library field led to an interest in information literacy and instruction. The following piece was posted on Speaking of Medicine yesterday.. At PLoS, were dedicated to the tenet of Open Access, making academic literature widely available on the web. However, with an ever-growing pool of scientific literature, our goals have to consider not only making content available, but also accessible. With the breadth of articles we aggregate, you need a strong tool to find the specific information you want. Our authors have published on methods to get the most out of search engine queries and even how search engine data can yield its own important results. To help our users navigate the sea of information PLoS publishes daily, we introduced an Advanced Search function with a broad range of filters.. When searching for PLoS articles, the ...

Any advanced course should contain a reasonable list of pointers to the relevant literature. But I cant conceive of a well run course that requires students to search the literature extensively. This is a course in mathematics, not one in library science. Understanding the lectures, and doing the assigned exercises should require that you go a little, but just a little, beyond what you understood before. So chances are that if you are searching the literature you are just lost. Keep in mind that there are other sources of help. There may be a textbook, tutoring, teaching assistants, and dont forget your instructor! Your teacher should be accessible, and most of us teach because we like to and because we enjoy the interaction with the students. I find that most students are hesitant to approach me, I think because they believe theyd waste my time, or they are embarrassed because their problem seems so simple. But you shouldnt hesitate! Im paid to help students, and chances are that Ive ...

Publisher: Public Library Science. Date Issued: 7/16/16. Abstract: When blood vessels undergo remodeling because of the buildup of atherosclerotic plaque, it is thought that they first undergo compensatory or outward remodeling, followed by inward remodeling: the lumen area stays roughly constant or increases slightly and then decreases rapidly. The second phase of remodeling is supposed to start after the plaque burden exceeds about 40%. These changes in the vessel were first observed by S. Glagov who examined cross-sections of coronary arteries at different stages of the disease. In this paper, we use a mathematical model based on growth and elasticity theory to verify the main aspects of Glagovs result. However, both our model and curve-fitting to the data suggest that the critical stenosis is around 20% rather than 40%. Our model and data from the PROSPECT trial also show that Glagov remodeling is qualitatively different depending on whether measurements are taken ex-vivo or in-vivo. Our ...

Boundary objects (BO) are abstract or physical artefacts that reside in the interfaces between organisations or groups of people. The concept of BO, introduced by Star and Griesemer in an article in 1989, has been used in a broad variety of studies in different research communities from management to computer science and different fields of information science. The aim of this panel, composed of experienced BO researchers, is to provide an overview of and introduction to the state of the art of information science research informed by the theory for the researchers and practitioners participating in the conference; to illustrate the variety of studies and contexts in which the notion of BOs can be found useful in explicating connections between collections, cultures and commu- nities; and to push forward the state of the art of BO-oriented information science research by discussing new empirical and practical areas of interest and the theory itself.. ...

It is easy to be overwhelmed by statistics on the growth of the Internet and commercialization of cyberspace; graphs of exponential growth confirm our impressions of living in a revolutionary age. Recently, however, contrarian opinions have emerged, notably the Nielsen/Commercenet study claiming Internet use is considerably less than net proponents suggest.. Is the net overrated? Is it being swamped by the web crawlers designed to make searching better? Is it really an Edsel running on New Coke? And what are the implications and unintended consequences for information professionals? Come hear Debora ("Ralf") Shaw, the incoming President of the American Society for Information Science, address these and other ponderables of the information age.. ...

Within information science, there has been a considerable emphasis on models and theories of information behaviour. The recent ASIST monograph, Theories of Information Behavior, provides an overview of the many the models and theories in information science (Fisher et al., 2005).. Models such as Taylors information use environment (Palmquist, 2005) and Dervins sense-making (Tidline, 2005) provide different perspectives on how individuals identify and seek to meet their information needs. Taylor, whose image of the information use environment recognized that the users environment or situation has a critical effect on the nature of information needed, has developed some of the earliest models of information use and was a precursor of a number of models focusing on the users cognitive state. In the case of sense-making, a paradigm that focuses on the user of information and the relationship of communication, information, and meaning for that user has an associated suite of data collection and ...

The divisions current research activities are highly collaborative and focused on two main areas of study: Characterization of Inherited Variants and Cancer Genomics. Characterization of Inherited Variants The Division of Genome Information Sciences is working closely with Dr. Christina Chambers in the National Childrens Study. This study will examine the effects of the environment, as broadly defined to include factors such as air, water, diet, sound, family dynamics, community and cultural influences, and genetics on the growth, development, and health of children across the United States, following them from before birth until age 21 years. Drs. Frazer and Smith study whether ancestry, as estimated from high-throughput genetic data, can be effectively used as a surrogate for self-reported race and ethnicity. Their results will aid the ongoing study as they enroll 100,000 children throughout the United States. Dr. Frazer and Dr. Harismendy have initiated and are leading investigators for a ...

This section contains articles, blogs, and streaming videos that loosely represent the perspectives of new librarians. Some of the authors of the blogs listed below may not actually be "new librarians," but they offer fresh perspectives on the issues of librarianship. Also, few of streaming videos are specifically about "new librarians," but they challenge, represent, or question the stereotypes that those unfamiliar the profession may have about librarians. ...
Our lab uses oriented peptide library technology to identify the motifs that are recognized and phosphorylated by protein kinases involved in cell cycle control. Many of these motifs are conserved in proteins from yeast to humans. How do these evolutionarily conserved phosphorylation motifs fit into the complex network of signaling pathways that regulate the cell cycle? To address this, we have developed a proteomics approach to identify phosphoserine/phosphothreonine-binding domains that specifically recognize the phosphorylated sequences produced by the action of these protein kinases. By binding to specific phosphorylated sequences on proteins, these binding domains orchestrate the formation of signaling complexes that, in turn, control the cell cycle. Our proteomic approach utilizes libraries of phosphorylated peptides that mimic the sequence produced by a protein kinase. These phosphopeptides libraries are then used to fish out? binding domains from the cell, and map them onto signaling ...
I guess this is where I tell you what I can do; through my 20+ years career Ive chewed over and gained specialist expertize in just slightly too abstract things, like Topic Maps (a fantastic technology that doesnt exist in Australia, but obviously should and you should hire me to teach you how to kick arse!), XSLT (a fantastic technology far too few use and truly understand, but you should and you should hire me to teach you how to solve complexity with simplicity!), AI (a crazy notion only researchers use, and Im not a qualified researcher, but you should hire me just because you value solutions over credentials!), library technology and science (a dying cluster of concepts, but you should hire me to get you up to speed and make you thrive and survive!), epistemology (dont even know where to begin with this one, but you should hire me because Im telling you!), and training / speaking / coaching on a mixture of the above (been on the conference speaking circle a bit, and held tons of ...

Richard Wright talking about storage and the "cost of risk". In early days dropping a storage device meant losing a few kilobytes, now it could be GBytes and years of work. Storage costs declining and capacity increasing exponentially roughly related to Moores law (doubling every 18 months). Usage is going up, too, and risk is proportionate to usage, so risk is going up too. Risk proportional to no of devices and to size and to use… plus the more commonly discussed format obsolescence, IT infrastructure obsolescence etc. So if storage gets really cheap, it gets really risky! Control of loss gets most attention: reduce MTBF, make copies, use storage management layers, introduce virtual storage, using digital library technology, etc. Mitigation of loss gets much less attention. Simple files can be read despite errors; more complex compressed files can be extremely fragile. Files with independent units have good properties. Reports work from Manfred Thaller of Koln: one bad byte affects only ...
This is the script I used for my talk.]. Today I am going to ask you to save the world. But that seems like a kind of heavy place to start, so instead Id like to start with cancer.. There is a reason Im not there in person, and a reason I have not been coming to visit your libraries recently. You see I am in confinement in Durham, North Carolina. I realize that sounds like Im in prison - which might not surprise some of you - but confinement is actually a medical term.. In an attempt to rid me of cancer on August 24th my son donated nearly a liter of his bone marrow to replace my own. For the past 60 plus days I have been confined in Durham with daily visits to the Duke Medical Center for treatment. There were plenty of difficult days where just getting out of bed was a success. Daily transfusions of blood, 21 pills a day, and a white blood cell count of 0 can really take it out of you. But, Im getting better. As I get better, Im finding Netflix a bit less entertaining, and it turns out ...

A pioneer of the information sciences, Jozef Gruska is above all a theorist who is seeking to break down barriers, both geographical and in the realms of ideas. His work as professor at Masaryk University in Brno (CZ) brings him into contact with researchers from all over the world and is causing him to step outside traditional paradigms to develop an information science that embraces all the major scientific fields. The convergence of quantum physics and the information processing sciences is central to this approach.
