Selection is the process of deciding which materials should be acquired for the librarys collection. Library materials may include books, magazines, newspapers, audio and video tapes, films, pamphlets, reports, photographs, sound recordings, etc. Selection is the responsibility of the librarian who selects material in accordance with a written, board approved policy. A written policy will aid the librarian in selecting material that is consistent with the purpose of the library. It serves as not only a guide for the librarian but also to inform others as to the nature of the collection and the procedures used in selection. The selection policy must be consistent with the general mission, goals and objective of the library and based on community needs. The selection policy could contain statements which: 1. Describe the librarys mission, goals and objectives. 2. Detail who has the responsibility and authority to select materials. 3. State the guidelines and procedures for selecting materials. ...

Its well known that George Mason faculty members are making valuable contributions to research, but less well known are the contributions they are making to the library collection development. One of the most highly used collections within the Prince William Campus Library has been created with the help of a researcher, Don Seto, whose primary interest is developing whole-genome informatics tools. In the past few years, Seto, associate professor in the School of Computational Sciences (SCS), has worked on many challenging research projects in bioinformatics, a discipline that develops and applies computational tools to the organization and study of biological data. The projects include genomic analyses of the mouse and human T-cell receptor families, bacterial genomes, and viral genomes.. Currently, Seto is leading the Molecular Diagnostics team of the Epidemic Outbreaks Surveillance (EOS) project sponsored in part by the U.S. Air Force Surgeon Generals Office. In the nineteenth century and beyond, scientists at Cambridge produced some of the most significant developments in the study of biological variation and inheritance. The work of William Bateson (several of whose books are also reissued in this series) was especially important in this regard. This book, first published in 1906 by the botanist Robert Heath Lock (1879-1915), lucidly traces these and other milestones in modern biological understanding. A readable account is given of the evolution of the discipline since the publication of Darwins On the Origins of Species in 1859, taking in the biometrical contributions of Francis Galton and the research into mutation conducted by Hugo de Vries. The pioneering experiments of Gregor Mendel, and the more recent rediscovery of his laws of inheritance, are clearly contextualised so that non-specialist readers can appreciate the scientific progress that had been made in the half-century prior to the books first publication ...

Beinecke Librarys collections broadly document human expression and lived experience. Some objects use words or images that are now recognized as offensive and unacceptable; some may have been viewed as unacceptable when they were created. Kim Kastens will take responsibility for implementing the filtering system.. The third activity under this proposal is to assess the scope and balance of the collection as it grows. If this were an ordinary book-library being built from scratch for a new community, there would a librarian watching the growth of the collection to make sure it was complete and well balanced. With a library based on contributed resources, there is a danger that the library will grow in a lopsided way. It could becoming rich in materials based on data from a well-organized and well funded government agency, while remaining poor in resources pertaining to another more diffuse and less organized discipline, or could grow rich in materials for undergraduates while remaining poor in materials for K-3. The product of this activity will be a report to the funding agencies and to the community calling attention to areas in which the library collections remains thin. Barbara DeFelice will take responsibility for this ...

Growth of Pacific saury Cololabis saira (Brevoort) inhabiting the western North Pacific wasstudied based on counting daily growth increments with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The small-size group (knob length: 200-240mm), medium-size group (knob length: 240-280mm) and largesize group (knob length: ,280mm) showed increments of 256±26.0 (S. D.), 405±76.1 and 566±48.2, respectively. Based on daily growth increment formation, we determined that the ages of the 3 groups were about 8, 13, and 19 months. Small- and large-size fish were considered tohave been hatched from autumn to winter, and medium-size fish from spring to summer. The oldest specimen of Pacific saury examined in this study was about 23 months of age; thus, the lifespan of Pacific saury in this area seems to be at least 1.5 years.. ...

Oregons two marine laboratory libraries (located at OSUs Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport and UOs Oregon Institute of Marine Biology in Charleston) have collaborated for 17 years on collection development. We share the same research environments- the Northeast Pacific Ocean and the Oregon coast. While our researchers and students take different approaches, their information needs often overlap, so building our collections in consultation with each other has always made sense. Facing increasing budget pressures, we are rethinking how to further reduce duplication in our collections and still ensure access to the information and resources our patrons need. In this presentation we will describe our experiences in working towards the concept of one collection in multiple locations and how well that ultimately ends up serving the needs of our patrons. Our approach to collection development is closely tied to open access of resources, resource sharing and shared responsibilities. ...

This classic work by F. W. L. Sladen (1876-1921) was published in 1912. Captivated by the bees in the grounds of his home, he produced his first essay on them in 1892, and later began to keep bees and produce honey as a livelihood, at the same time studying and breeding honeybees. Moving in 1912 to Canada, he eventually received the title of Dominion Apiarist, but unfortunately his work was cut short by his sudden death in 1921. When this book was published, there were no detailed accounts of the life cycles of the humble-bee (or bumblebee) species. Sladen provides these, with a guide to distinguishing the different British species (with colour plates which can be viewed at http://www.cambridge.org/9781108075725), and instructions on how to domesticate these important pollinators. Combining the enthusiasm of a naturalist with the precision of a scientist, this work is of continuing interest and importance in environmental studies ...

Louisville Law Examiner Budget Increased An additional $210,000 will be placed in the Law School budget next year, President James G. Miller announced on April 29, to the UL faculty and staff. He further stated that a request for $350,000 for the Law School has been submitted to the state Council for Public Higher Education (CPHE). Mr. Miller told the group that the $210,000 figure represents the shot in the arm recommended in the Burke Report, one which he considers an adequate minimum. Mr. Miller noted, however, that the $210,000 amount falls short of the $350,000 figure submitted to the CPHE as the sum needed to cure the financial problem. Last October, a panel of legal experts headed by former Louisville Mayor, Frank W. Burke, concluded that an immediate $210,000 shot in the arm was necessary to improve the schools curriculum and facilities. The new funds will increase the Law Schools budget to $1.1 million. The Law School request is part of an overall request by UL to the ...

Vessel (2014), directed by Diana Whitten, follows Dutch physician and former Greenpeace ships doctor Rebecca Gomperts and her organization Women on Waves as they sail from country to country with the hope of providing access to and information about safe medical abortions for women. The film unfolds in chronological order with after-the-fact interviews from Women on Waves volunteers interspersed throughout. The camera centers on Gomperts for the duration of the film but also captures conversations amongst the other volunteers. Whitten includes real-time interviews with the volunteers, as well as supplementary footage filmed by other documentarians and news outlets which gives an account of how citizens on land saw the ship. Whitten is careful to protect the identities of the women who board the ship to get an abortion, as the camera only ever shows their hands or blurs their faces.. The film, which premiered at South by Southwest Film Festival in 2014, consists of almost a decades worth of ...
Opus V by Amouage opens on a lightly metallic, almost boozy note of silvery iris. It feels like sipping gin & tonic under a crepuscular sky with the uncertain temperatures of an April evening. Not particularly dry nor sweetened by other notes, it stages the scene for its expressive range in the next stage. Soon perfumer Jacques Cavallier flanks the composition with woodier notes, subtle, only slightly bitter (agarwood is mentioned, but I suspect some cedar and Iso-E Super as well), with underpinnings of suede, a soft mantle over delicate shoulders. Although the introduction wasnt sweet, as time passes a small subfacet of sweetness emerges, very mollified, without powdery aspects, just to annul the funereal aspects of iris. Indeed anyone who has been scared off by Iris Silver Mist will find a tamer, more friendly iris in Opus V and one which projects at a lower scale. The progression is seamless and feels natural, without the classical pyramidal structure. The lasting power is satisfactory, ...

Over the past decade, libraries have expanded their use of various types of service assessment. Initially popularized by the LibQUAL+ service, there is now a robust library assessment community, including dedicated assessment librarians and coordinators at many institutions, who are charged with examining existing services and user perceptions with the purpose of documenting the value of the academic librarys collections and services and identifying opportunities for improvement. At some institutions, assessment has become an important element of how libraries establish their key priorities on a regular basis.. Today library leaders must do more than build and manage collections, improve the quality of existing services, and find the funding to support this work. In addition, the library leader is called upon to reconsider or reassert the roles and objectives of the library in a changing information environment and to develop the strategy, services, spaces, and staffing to support these roles. ...

The collections of Meise Botanic Garden comprise extensive and varied documentation on the genus Rosa. The library collection contains valuable and often rare 19th century publications about the genus Rosa, frequently with annotations by François Crépin. In addition to this, the archives hold the unpublished manuscripts and thousands of letters from Crépins correspondents reflecting the extraordinary scientific network he built up to facilitate the exchange of herbarium collections together with erudite discussions on the taxonomy of the genus Rosa. Crépin exchanged letters with all the important rhodologists of his time, such as E. Burnat, H. Christ, P.A. Déséglise, P.E. Parmentier, H. Takashima, and W. Wirtgen, and also with horticulturists, such as J. Gravereaux. This unique network and diversified patrimony of historical collections took shape over a period of several decades during which Crépin prepared a monograph of the genus Rosa that unfortunately was never finished. Crépin assembled

SAN DIEGO-- Ligand Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (NASDAQ: LGND) today announced that it has agreed to divest and sell its combinatorial chemical library and associated proprietary technology to Venenum Biodesign, LLC, an affiliate of Medical Diagnostic Laboratories, LLC, members of Genesis Biotechnology Group (GBG), for $1.8 million. Under the terms of the agreement, Ligand will receive $1 million at the close of the transaction, $800,000 over the next two years and 10% of all revenues from third party collaborations for three years. The combinatorial chemistry asset, which Ligand obtained in the acquisition of Pharmacopeia in December 2008, comprises an encoded combinatorial library collection (ECLiPS) and an ultra-high throughput screening platform. I want to tell you about this wonderful scriptorium that we have at Cushing Academy in 1439. We have scribes working full time to illuminate and copy the central texts of western civilization, especially Aristotle. We now have a remarkable library collection of 200 manuscripts, of which we are justly boastful. Now, I just learned some guy named Gutenberg claims to have perfected a method of movable type, which he thinks is the next big thing. Im skeptical. I dont see how this is ever going to replace the beautiful illuminated scripts that we have. So much of value will be lost if we move to these ugly, nondescript, black and white, uniform looking things called printed books. It surely will never compete with the aesthetic value of illuminated vellum. Compared to the human, personal expression of handwritten texts, wheres the individualization in printed copies? Also, these books are not going to be safe for society, because we wont be able to control information from getting into the hands ...

Katherine Daniel, Joseph J. Esposito, Roger C.
